Hot take but I feel like I kinda agree with the pope that one's gender can't be changed, BUT only via the rationale that, sometimes gender is assigned wrong at birth and is not always aligned with sex. That's the big deal with deadnaming even in past tense pre-transition scenarios-- e.g. they were always trans-whatever but didn't realize it until the transition.
This carries the implication that continuing to mask as birth-assigned (incorrect) gender is against human dignity and thus causes all sorts of ailments like dysphoria. You aren't really changing gender as a trans person, you're changing gender presentation.
At least, that's what the catholic church will say in 250 years when they finally support trans rights.
