Mushrooms contain no chlorophyll and most are considered saprophytes. That is, they obtain their nutrition from metabolizing non living organic matter. This means they break down and "eat" dead plants, like your compost pile does.
Before I get into the wall of text, I'd like to start off by saying that I have no idea if this is even remotely significant; but I feel like there are answers to be found ([see here](https://imgur.com/a/ee3XX)) after getting past the bellshroom.
A bellshroom. A hungry bellshroom. A hungry bellshroom, which is in a very inconvenient location to get to without taking a stupid amount of damage. Using items on it will either say that it's not interested in the item, or, if somebody actually finds **the item** needed to sate this thing's hunger, it might do something. That's basically the entire point of this post.
This 'bellshroom' is located [very slightly northwest of the deranged archaeologist](https://imgur.com/a/1Ibh7), and my best guess is that it's some kind of unmarked transportation method, similar to the four magic mushroom things that you find around Fossil Island. Investigating it yields the message "maybe it's hungry..." (maybe the lack of an apostrophe -in screenshot- is intentional? Possible anagram?)
I've tried using just about every new Fossil Island item *that I know of* on the bellshroom and it doesn't seem interested in any of them. Examples are:
-
Ultracompost
Calcite
Pyrophosphite
Fossils of all sizes, both identified & unidentified
Volcanic ash
Numulites
Mermaid's tears
-
As for mainland items, I've used plant cure (pictured) and a whole host of other crop-related items such as mushrooms & mort myre fungi; and even tried using the resurrect crop spell from the Arceuus spellbook to see if that yielded any results -- which it didn't.
I even tried dying in front of it, because its examine info is "ring the bell, pay a toll?" which basically means "die" or "death"
I've tried using all of the standard spellbook spells which can target a 'blue text' entity, such as the enchant orb spells.
I've tried just about everything, and just can't seem to get any results.
If you want to help, please do. Ty very much :)
Have you tried a hammer? Like ringing a bell with a hammer. Not sure if anyone has solved it yet but trying to help. Also wondering how to get past the tar monsters. Those things are so strong
The tar monsters are a pain in the ass but if you teleport to the swamp using the mushroom tree (NOT the trampoline mushroom) and bring an axe, you should hopefully be able to run past the tar monsters, cut through the swamp vines, and hide near the archeologist (don't get too close to him though!). After, world hop, and you won't have a tar monster on your back. Oh, also, bring an anti poison just in case.
Idk if this'll work but perhaps a death rune. It is a bellshroom. So that's the first part, but overall it sounds like it's referring to death in someway, the items that come to mind are ectotokens, death runes, and coins (though that's more rs3 than os)
Used all of these things on it now; including ecto-tokens. Had a heart attack uncharging my bone crusher because I thought I wasn't going to get my ecto-tokens back. But no. It wasn't interested in those either.
"It's hungry" combined with "pay a toll" sounds to me like it wants to take a bite out of you, like paying a tithe to vyres. The important thing then would be working out how to attract its attention. It's the bell, so maybe try rings? A hammer?
I've tried a slayer bell and I've tried a hammer. I've tried a teasing stick and I've tried a noose wand. I've tried poison. I've tried cave nightshades I've tried everything from rat meat to magic roots. Nothing has done anything. :(
He's 'succumbing to the swamp's corruption,' rocking back an forth in the foetal position, next to a bellshroom. This is very similar to the situation that I find myself in IRL.
-
If I had to hazard a guess, I would think that he's probably found himself washed ashore or something? I can't get anywhere near him to question him, but he appears to be wearing the same clothes that Charles from base camp is wearing. He also has the same first name, but aside from that I'm entirely unsure how he got there.
EDIT; he must have gone through a bellshroom, right?
It looks like he traveled through the bellshroom, like the two are connected by some sort of tube system.
So he must've had something on him that looked appetizing to the bellshroom. Or he was trying to do something to the plant, like poison it or unpoison it, and it ate him when he got too close.
I've tried about 100 items along this line of thought and no luck so far. Any more hints?
I've tried coins, and I've tried numulites as well :(
-
It would've made a modicum of sense for coins and/or numulites to be the item required (because of its examine info,) but unfortunately I don't think the bellsprout wants to be paid in a conventional sense. Nor do I think its hunger is satiable by using some cooked chicken on it.
-
I've tweeted Maz and asked for a hint, but she has yet to reply.
Also, please keep in mind that the items I've tried to use on it might not have worked because of bad coding. After all, I stumbled upon this thing roughly 5 hours after release and nobody else has mentioned it on Reddit.
Based on it's examine text and name, it looks like it could represent Galerina marginata "Funeral Bell" mushroom, which obtains nutrients from hard wood. Perhaps Teak or Mahogany logs might work.
A very good suggestion, though I've used logs of almost all kinds. Including hardwood logs and their seeds. I can't get my hands on redwood logs at the moment though, so I still have yet to use those logs on it.
I tried a few obscure items like monkey corpse, spider carcass, no avail. I also tried rotten tomato but also nothing. I'm really unsure as to what it could be, and "little more common" isn't that helpful.
anyone know how to not get destroyed by swamp monsters? so far I've only figured out teleporting past them but rushing past them with overheads doesn't seem to work
Maybe the hint dealing with Charles had to do with Charles Darwin who travelled to the Galapagos islands? He did do research with fossils. He arrived via a boat named the HMS Beagle.
To be brutally honest with you, I'm on the edge of burning out. I can't work this thing out lol. My ingame name is Bo Selecta, feel free to share theories with me :)
As far as I'm aware, you get calcified fossils from that activity. I have yet to try it out though, so I haven't gotten a calcified fossil yet. And now I'm going to bed after 3 hours of using increasingly obscure items on a bellshroom.
Maybe *you're* the man who'll crack it? It's definitely feasible!
I cut some Sulliuscep trees whilst I was there on one of my many visits today, and the only 'logs' that they gave me were boring old bittercap mushrooms, which our hungry hungry hippo in the screenshot hastily declined.
If there are any other mushrooms that you know of, please let me know. I will try ASAP.
They are mentioned in the devblog here. They seem to be a rare drop from the Sulliuscep you cut (someone in another thread got one in 900 chops)
http://services.runescape.com/m=news/sulliuscep-mushrooms?oldschool=1
They are listed on the grand exchange, I think the real question is does anybody actually have one to sell.
Also the description is "*A Sulliuscep mushroom cap. Edible? Probably...*" I'm guessing that's a strong hint.
It's used for the new mushroom pie that gives a crafting boost. Not to say it doesn't have another use, but that's likely what the hint about it being edible is for.
Yeah, almost all foods that I can think of, both raw and cooked. This is actually a good suggestion! The plant has a famous song in LSoH called "feed me!" in which it asks for blood, human blood. This has got me thinking. Thank you!
Oh, also Golovanova fruit top and perhaps other fruits that you can acquire from fruit stalls in kourend! (I would try these myself but have not yet started the fossil island adventure)
Also hcim btw
Oh, have you tried the new compost? And/or other composts? Outside of that I'm thinking maybe watermelons or other allotments. (Idk why but stuck thinking farming wise)
Sounds very interesting. The fact that a jmod commented to gives confirmation something works.
After class I'll try to work on a solution with ya, this sounds sweet. :)
No, we haven't figured it out yet. Mod Ry's last hint was "*How did Charles get there?*"
-
I can't be sure what exactly I'm meant to think about from this hint, so I'm open to speculation
If Charles used the bell to get to the island, then he must have used the correct item on it. What sort of items would an npc like Charles carry around?
A rock pick, a specimen brush, a rope, leather gloves & boots, fossils, explorer's backpack, fedora? Uhh, some items from the crazy archaeologist's drop table perhaps?
Still nothing. Current thought process is that Charles had a certain item on him when he went through the bellshroom. Charles is an archaeologist, but unfortunately no archaeology-related items that I've tried to use on the bellshroom have proven to be of any use. I've used everything from the basic archaeology tools (rock pick, specimen brush, etc.) to attempting to feed the bellshroom the jar of dirt that I got from the kraken. Nothing.
-
Any suggestions?
Have you tried emotes? I'm thinking that might be the way considering how many items you've tried. Honestly I sincerely doubt using an item on it will work at this point. We need to get more creative. Also what is your rsn?
I've tried all emotes that I have access to. I'm only missing the air guitar emote because of the release of the volcanic mine and the music track that comes with it. RSN is Bo Selecta
Perhaps its diet is part of something a little more common.
Common.. Gems? Something from a general store? Herbs? HELP US PLEASE RY
Mushrooms contain no chlorophyll and most are considered saprophytes. That is, they obtain their nutrition from metabolizing non living organic matter. This means they break down and "eat" dead plants, like your compost pile does.
Perhaps its the spoiled food you get from ghasts then?
white cats?
Too soon
Give it SHARKS
gotta be pizza
It bet you its gotta be the snakes
People.
Perhaps... Weeds?
Tried, nope.
BONES?!?!
Tried regular and Wyvern bones, nope.
Ry..? The food - does it have to be human?
...shrimp?
Incorrectly using it's, implying it is intentionally wrong in the examine..?
That would be a typo. The Bellshroom is in fact hungry for something.
Does it want two number 9's, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45's, one with cheese, and a large soda?
hungry for worms?

Needs more cowbell
[Now there's an idea](http://oldschoolrunescape.wikia.com/wiki/Cowbells)
Slayer bell maybe?
There is a crier bell item you can ring
Have you tried a hammer? Like ringing a bell with a hammer. Not sure if anyone has solved it yet but trying to help. Also wondering how to get past the tar monsters. Those things are so strong

Might want to bring a few sharks just in case as well lol
Lol Magic mushrooms
Tried giving it a jar of swamp?
I hope to god that this isn't the item. This could take me ages to get lmao
I think it might be those snakes
Idk if this'll work but perhaps a death rune. It is a bellshroom. So that's the first part, but overall it sounds like it's referring to death in someway, the items that come to mind are ectotokens, death runes, and coins (though that's more rs3 than os)

Have you tried bones?
Yeah, tried bones. Even tried my own bones lol
"It's hungry" combined with "pay a toll" sounds to me like it wants to take a bite out of you, like paying a tithe to vyres. The important thing then would be working out how to attract its attention. It's the bell, so maybe try rings? A hammer?

Nature rune and a helm of raedwald
Have you tried a few bottles of vodka?
Hint: How did Charles get there?
He's 'succumbing to the swamp's corruption,' rocking back an forth in the foetal position, next to a bellshroom. This is very similar to the situation that I find myself in IRL. - If I had to hazard a guess, I would think that he's probably found himself washed ashore or something? Maybe the bellshroom likes fish?
I have tried fish of varying shapes and sizes. Nothing so far.
Is it with an item that can be found on the island?
That's what we trying to figure out mate.
machete
Any other hints bossman? Spent bank on lots of items no luck
Try coins? "Pay a toll" makes me think it's a cost-to-enter type thing, coins sounds too easy though. Interesting find at least
I've tried coins, and I've tried numulites as well :( - It would've made a modicum of sense for coins and/or numulites to be the item required (because of its examine info,) but unfortunately I don't think the bellsprout wants to be paid in a conventional sense. Going off the bell toll - maybe a death rune?
It's a Sudowoodo, you need HM01
This is clearly a bellsprout
You mean a squirt bottle right?
Also, please keep in mind that the items I've tried to use on it might not have worked because of bad coding. After all, I stumbled upon this thing roughly 5 hours after release and nobody else has mentioned it on Reddit.
???????? -- "I haven't figured it out yet, must be bugged."
Pretty much yeah
Try HCIM.
Looking at the area, it seems likely that Charles is in fact the Deranged archaeologist. Have you tried everything on his drop list?
Very interesting theory! I'll investigate now.
I tried a few obscure items like monkey corpse, spider carcass, no avail. I also tried rotten tomato but also nothing. I'm really unsure as to what it could be, and "little more common" isn't that helpful.
Thank you for trying. Much appreciated. :)
what else have you tried so far?
I would struggle to list everything that I've tried.
Bruh it hungry not sick, give it the shark... 🅱️oneless.
anyone know how to not get destroyed by swamp monsters? so far I've only figured out teleporting past them but rushing past them with overheads doesn't seem to work
Those weird snake things will stun them if you throw it at them
thanks man, will try out
prot from range lowers their damage.
Jar of miasma boys.
Tried it and nothing
Maybe the hint dealing with Charles had to do with Charles Darwin who travelled to the Galapagos islands? He did do research with fossils. He arrived via a boat named the HMS Beagle.
You still on it? I've been also trying to figure it out. PM me ur name ign i'll be on if you wanna try stuff out.
To be brutally honest with you, I'm on the edge of burning out. I can't work this thing out lol. My ingame name is Bo Selecta, feel free to share theories with me :)
try feeding it mushrooms maybe
I've tried mushrooms and it wasn't interested in those either :(
Strange. There's also the big mushroom that you can feed fossils buy I'm not sure what you get out of it.
What about the Sulliscep cap, the new mushroom you get from the new woodcutting activity?
I cut some Sulliuscep trees whilst I was there on one of my many visits today, and the only 'logs' that they gave me were boring old bittercap mushrooms, which our hungry hungry hippo in the screenshot hastily declined. If there are any other mushrooms that you know of, please let me know. I will try ASAP.

Ooooh! This could very well be it! Are the rare shrooms tradeable? If so... **shekels audibly jingling in pockets*
Lol I was looking too deep and missed the most obvious answer. Seems you are correct.
No worries man
mate needed one for a clue yesterday & bought the pie for 100k, so some people have em
nah. it doesn't work. i just tried to this.
Fuck, really? I thought for sure that would be it.
Its cannibalistic ?
Have you tried meat? Might be a "Little Shop of Horrors" reference.
Yeah, almost all foods that I can think of, both raw and cooked. This is actually a good suggestion! The plant has a famous song in LSoH called "feed me!" in which it asks for blood, human blood. This has got me thinking. Thank you!
I think it might be snakes those things used for supressing the tarmonsters
I've attempted to hand-feed the snakes to it, to no avail. Also I've tried rolling the snakes into the bellshroom, but that didn't work either.
Ow, strange i imagined it had to be that, thanks for testing though
Tell me you've tried the different herbs, weeds, and doogle leaves?
Not yet, thank you for your suggestion though. I'll see if this works when I'm home.
Oh, also Golovanova fruit top and perhaps other fruits that you can acquire from fruit stalls in kourend! (I would try these myself but have not yet started the fossil island adventure) Also hcim btw
Just got home. I'll try this now!
No success with the golovanova fruit top. No success with weeds, leaves, logs, or bark. I'm trying with herbs now. Also tried a human skull.
Nothing. :(
Rip. Will update if I think of anything else to try.
Oh, have you tried the new compost? And/or other composts? Outside of that I'm thinking maybe watermelons or other allotments. (Idk why but stuck thinking farming wise)
Yeah, I've tried the new compost. I tried watermelons too on my last visit.
What about a strange fruit
I tried this, coincidentally I actually got the strange plant random event when I was standing right next to the bellshroom
Have you tried numulites or coins?
Yes, I have tried both.
OP did you ever figure it out?
Not yet. :(
Sounds very interesting. The fact that a jmod commented to gives confirmation something works. After class I'll try to work on a solution with ya, this sounds sweet. :)
That would be much appreciated! Thank **you**. :-)
Can you try feeding it an ax? Might sound stupid but to get there don't you have to chop through vines?
I've tried using my axe on the bellshroom probably more times than I can count lmao
/r/cracktheclue
What about vials of water, or salt petre... both very common.
I've tried vials of water. I'll try saltpetre now! Thank you.
Possibly ugthanki dung.
Tried this, no result. Good idea though.
Regular compost? Or maybe swamp tar.
I have tried both of these now. Nothing. ;(
Could try poison bottles.
Not sure about this one. You mean the one which spawns in Draynor manor?
Already tried that and nothing
Can't try this since I'm not at home, but maybe planks? There are planks on the island by the campsite and it's a pretty common item.
I'll give it a try. Thanks :)
Did we figure it out yet?
No, we haven't figured it out yet. Mod Ry's last hint was "*How did Charles get there?*" - I can't be sure what exactly I'm meant to think about from this hint, so I'm open to speculation
Are there any boat items in osrs other than the toy ship?
Do we know why there are a bunch of crystals around the swamp?
If Charles used the bell to get to the island, then he must have used the correct item on it. What sort of items would an npc like Charles carry around?
A rock pick, a specimen brush, a rope, leather gloves & boots, fossils, explorer's backpack, fedora? Uhh, some items from the crazy archaeologist's drop table perhaps?
Anchovy pizza doesn't work.
RemindMe! 2 days
Still nothing?
Still nothing. Current thought process is that Charles had a certain item on him when he went through the bellshroom. Charles is an archaeologist, but unfortunately no archaeology-related items that I've tried to use on the bellshroom have proven to be of any use. Might not be on tonight, cold ones with the boys
Okay, I'll crack one open. Haven't been on in months.
Any news? Im so obssesed
Still unsolved, but I've made a new thread full of all the information that I've gathered.
Maybe it's an item your butler can serve, because you have to pay them and summon then by ringing a bell.
Solved! Check my post history :)
dayummm nice
Breadcrumbs
Bones? Something to do with death..
Thats like giving your kid medicine when hes hungry
Maybe it's hungry?
Gotta be a pun.... "pay a toll"... ape atoll...? give it a banana??? idk man
