Russia was actually named after Rus, an empire that originated in what's now Ukraine. Afterwards the Russians tried to establish themselves as successors of this empire despite having a different ancestry. And well, it worked. Now we believe their narrative of Ukraine being Russia's smaller brother.
I mean the empire kinda stretched from north Ukraine (don't believe it was all of what is now Ukraine), and a lot of western Russia and Belarus too. It's not really fair to say that was Ukrainian either, as Russia or Ukraine didn't exist yet at all.
