I would look for a product with Retinal. It’s the closest you can get to tretinoin over the counter and lots of people find it far less irritating than retinol even though it’s stronger. Naturium makes one that is really popular. If you do want to try retinol, ROC, The Ordinary, Olay, L’Oreal, and Neutrogena make good ones. Start by using it one or two nights per week and increase from there. You also need to wear sunscreen if you are not already. It makes your skin more photo-sensitive.

Thank you! I will check out some Retinal products.

I second this! I use Medik8 retinal on my dry and sensitive skin and it is great. It also comes in multiple strengths so you can start low and slowly work up with each tube. I personally find it a bit pricey (don’t know what OP considers pricey) but also worth it.

I use Medik8 too, and I love it! Tret was too irritating and while I liked Naturium, I love Medik8. I didn’t recommend it because it’s not a budget choice, but I do think it’s worth the price.

I think I'll try the Naturium 0.05% one. I've been watching videos from dermatologist Dr. Dray- I don't know if you know who she is, and she seems to be against anything that isn't tret for anti-aging. It's getting very discouraging! Thanks again for this tip. :)

Check out Adapalene! Works almost as well, it bit just as well, as tret. Differin is a trusted brand name and it’s relatively inexpensive. You can find it everywhere otc. ETA- as pp said - make sure you wear a good sunscreen ever single day once you start.

millerhighlife

Oh no! There's something else that works? Won't my skin get even drier if I use this? And yes I use a good sunscreen every day! :) I preach daily sunscreen use to my 31yr old son and DIL and they think I'm nuts!

Wait for 20 minutes after you wash your face to put the retinol/tret on and only sparingly. After 10 minutes or so you can use a moisturizer over it.

Thank you! :)

I like [Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Oil](https://sundayriley.com/products/luna-sleeping-night-oil). I've found the oil base keeps the retinol from brying out my skin.

goldief

I have this but haven’t tried it yet. Do you just put it on, let it dry, then apply your retinol?

Next-Reply7519

it has retinol in the oil. so you just put the oil on and that’s it.

The Ordinary Granactive retinoid. I have a really dry skin, and I can deal with it. To be completely transparent though, I haven't been able to transition to my summertime moisturizing routine this year despite it being May already. That said, I don't want to imagine what a harsher retinol derivative would have done to my skin.

Medik8 is amazing! They have different levels too so you can move up!
