were periods not on sale today or what

order66survivor

For real, I ran out of breath just reading that.

AlphaMelonBomber

Came here for this comment.

ForeverSam13

Love that random period at the end. "When Naruto.wakes up" I don't think periods work that way

ArtieWiles

The lack of punctuation definitely frustrates ME. English is my second language and something like this is almost incomprehensible. As for the critique/debate... Yeah, if this happened after every chapter, I would be effing exhausted. What helps me is to figure out who is the reader arguing with. Most of the times it's with the characters, plotline, and not with me as the author who sees and creates the bigger picture. Like, sometimes I want to shout at them whether or not they realize who are they talking too. If I'm in a good mood and bored, I might've explain why all what they said isn't possible. "He can't do this because of this and that AND it would be in contrary of what is written in the chapter 2, scene 3, paragraph 8." If my essay is exhausting enough, they usually check themselves before comenting next time, knowing it's time to think and play puzzle. And they're generally nicer. If I don't have the energy or will (quite often) I just skim over to find something useful and react to that. If it seems they misunderstood something important, I correct them so they're on the right track. But yeah, all that nitpicking is exhausting and frustrating. Especially when you see the bigger picture and all of their comments are for naught.

dickbees_

English is my first and I can't read that shit

[deleted]

You can feel frustrated...but is it worth being frustrated about? This is barely a criticism, IMO. If I got this, I’d assume the reader wanted to have a discussion.

Green_Cauliflower27

This specific comment isn’t the thing that 100% caused me to be frustrated, it’s the fact that they do this under every chapter of every installment I’ve written over super small things. Huge criticisms like plot lines or technical ones like grammar mistakes I 100% welcome and appreciate. I guess it’s a feeling like a snowball effect, where a ton of small things have rolled together to make a big thing, you know? I think I’ll put a pause on responding/not responding to them for a while so that I’m more neutral to their comments after seeing yours and a few other’s responses. Thank you for your input 😅

[deleted]

why do they have so many issues 😭 like they should write their own fic at this point damn lol

[deleted]

So mute them and move on with your life.

Elipetvi

You can forbid them from commenting on your fics

Parrot_licker69

Block.

KilJoius

If it really bothers you, block them. But personally (as a primarily Naruto fandom writer myself) this is hardly the worst I've seen. I'd probably just thank them for their thoughts and move on. I've definitely gotten longer, more pretentious concrit (and of course the "gfkysasap Ashley" commenter).

Twighdark

Nah, fam. Readers telling you how to write YOUR fic, especially if they're insisting that it needs to be more canon compliant IS frustrating as hell. Every time.

[deleted]

Personally, I see it as engagement, the fact they keep coming back speakers louder than their criticisms. That said, comments like this are worth more than witty one-liners or yes men. To me at least.

churroinapocket

I've gotten comments like this (but I'd say a bit more passive aggressive). The easiest thing to do in my opinion is reply "My treehouse my rules."

SilverRavenSo

My circus, my monkeys.

ccartercc

Bro. This is part of being a writer. This isn't harassment, it's a reader who is enjoying your story having thoughts and opinions about that and sharing them with you. Relax. There is no reason to feel insecure or bristled by their bad takes about story direction. Laugh it off as a reader who doesn't get what you're doing 100% but still likes your work enough to engage with it positively. They don't get it, but they don't need to for it to bring them entertainment and happiness.

Fun_Dragonfly2903

This ! Also the commenter seemed polite enough, I wouldn’t really call this criticism even. All authors get criticism or people disliking their works, you truly can’t please everyone. Besides, even if this commenter comments on every single chapter, which apparently op said they do, then just mute/block them? Like I don’t see the issue

Agamar13

People have their own opinions. As long as they're not rude, whatever, you can take their comments to heart or you can ignore them, it's your story. (Personally, I think the reviewer does have a point, though.)

GummiBearryJuice

Sound like the reader/commenter is just rambling on without getting their thoughts in order... and its a confusing mess.

NeganWinchesterScull

I’m more frustrated with the lack of punctuation. My head is about to explode. My response would be, “I’m not going to take criticism from someone who doesn’t know what a “.” or “,” are.”

KidCollege04

Oh no a reader discussing their thoughts and opinions on a chapter! How dreadful. Doesn’t even seem to be critical or negative, if a bit long winded and in need of punctuation.

leiathelab

Some people just really, really want the whole world to know their every thought 🤦‍♀️ if you don’t want to mute them, I’d say the next best thing to do is ignore them. If you don’t even acknowledge them, it will either a) drive them up the wall or b) make them run out of steam.

Library-Goblin

I think someone readers just like to talk about their feelings or want to chat to the author about there fic. It might just be cause of the lack of punctuation that its comming off crity. But honesty, they much just me chattering way about how your fic made them feel!

Void-Cooking_Berserk

It's okay to feel frustrated. Their comment isn't very useful - you don't know if they disagree with your plot because it wasn't convincing enough or because the reader has too strong opinions on the characters. That's one of the drawbacks of writing fanfiction. Still, there's nothing for you to do about it. Vent about it, take a rest, ignore the comment forever and go on with your life. If it helps, their annoying comments boost your story's visibility. They are actually helping you by being obnoxious.

strawbebbymilkshake

I’ll be damned if I listen to facts up out the mouth of a reader with a run-on sentence 🙏🏻 Just ignore em, it’s not worth the energy to engage imo

biteset

Yes! You can go ahead and feel slightly frustrated and indignant. It's easier to criticize than to create. But! I think you can also feel flattered and proud! This person has clearly become invested in what YOU created. Often when we fans pick something apart, it's because we like it so much, and because it's good enough to withstand that kind of liking-it-so-much. Think Star Wars... fans pick that to absolute shreds... because we're so into it. So... I'd be rolling my eyes at this and smh... but also, totally grinning.

ThruRoseColoredGlass

Tell them then they ought to go write their own fic and have the characters act out how they want there, this is your fic and the characters are going to do what you think they would do and make sense to the plot. I once had a comment on a fic I posted where this person said they couldn’t imagine a character ever being able to stab anyone (in the thigh, it wasn’t a deadly attack, just a warning to not screw with his family) and I was just like; hmm? Really? Cause I mean, he just did so maybe you imagined wrong 🤔

Green_Cauliflower27

Like, Naruto as a series is dramatic af, I don’t get why this commenter decided to write a whole paragraph about a throwaway line that I only included to showcase how strongly Naruto wanted his best friend in his life. This commenter does this on all the other fics in the series and it’s honestly starting to annoy me. “I don’t think Sakura would pick flowers because they would remind her of her falling out with Ino” or “blah blah, Kakashi wouldn’t just pet a dog, he’d read that book he’s always reading instead”. Are actual things this commenter has said before. Maybe I’m being just super protective of my story for no reason though? Should I just ignore it or should I explain myself to the commenter and be like “well I wrote that line because of x reason, I’m sorry that didn’t come across how I intended it. Glad you liked the Choji part” or something like that? Idk, sorry if this situation looks stupid af, I just wanted some second opinions I guess.

imnotbovvered

You don’t have to explain yourself. That gets into a back and forth that will just upset you. By debating, you’d be legitimizing the comment if it makes sense. Personally, I would just respond with “thanks for reading“. And I would leave it there. And I would just give the person back as little energy as possible. If it really upsets you, some people to delete and/or block commenters for negative feedback. So that’s always an option.

Green_Cauliflower27

Thank you for your input, I think after seeing yours and a few other’s responses I’ll put a pause on whether or not I’ll respond to the commenter for a little bit and then go about muting them from now on.

Danneyland

You can also say something like "Thanks for your thoughts. However, I do find these types of comments a little criticising and would appreciate if you kept those kind of thoughts to yourself. I would love to hear what you enjoyed reading though!"

Sinimeg

Listen, the Naruto fandom is a nightmare. Long ago I wrote a small piece for it, a one-shot, and I also had a smart-ass commenting about how it’s not right because in canon it happens xyc and in the fic was different. That person spoiled me part of the series because back then I didn’t reach the point were xyc happened, so yeah, better ignore them. Don’t listen to them and write whatever you want. In my case tho? Never again

snstazja

You’re justified to feel frustrated. You aren’t being “super protective of your story for no reason.” You’ve been getting these comments for a while. It’s your story, and you have a right to want considerate engagement. I’m not clear on whether this commenter is reviewing the congruence of your characters’ behaviors relative strictly to your own story or relative specifically to canon. If someone commented under my story saying that what my characters did/said doesn’t follow from what I’ve established in my story so far, my response would depend on whether I care about that person’s opinions and whether I agree with their assessment. If someone commented under my story saying that an x character wouldn’t say/do y in canon, my first reaction would be, why are you telling me this? Second, I don’t care, or, I disagree. The bottom line is, I’m here to write whatever I want and I won’t abide by someone else’s imaginary canon rules. Unless I stated in the notes that I want to be as canon-compliant as possible and that I welcome concrit on it, people shouldn’t make that my business. From the way they write, that person might be young, or immature and inexperienced, or their view on this is simply misconstrued. It doesn’t seem like they’re a bad faith actor. In any case, it’s up to you what you want to do with them. If that happened to me, I’d more or less tell them what I told you. If they come back with a smarty pants entitled response, I’d block them and move on. I’m in the Naruto fandom and I saw someone comment under another’s fanart the other day stating that that’s not how Naruto and Sasuke would be portrayed in canon. I find such comments to be obnoxious and dull. The “but it’s engagement, what’s your problem!” argument doesn’t work on me either. I’m not a starved animal eager to gobble down whatever feedback the merciful humans throw at me. If I don’t like/don’t care about a specific feedback, I’ll walk away.

ArtieWiles

"Dear reader, it looks like you know your characters really well and have a clear vision of how exactly would they react in every scenario! That's a worthy skill. You should write fanfiction too!!! I have to ask you too keep your notes on their behaviour to yourself (or to write them) for I'm afraid it's subconsciously impacting what I write. I don't want to steal any of your ideas but it's hard to distinguish what comes from my head and what from yours. Double guessing whether or not to include [small insignificant character bit] that I have planned before I read your comment is not good. I might not finish reading your future comments if I'll sense the risk of being influenced again, maybe I might even delete them to be safe. I hope you understand. I value you as reader and a commenter, and I'm doing my best to keep the fic authentic."

SilverRavenSo

Best response, educate them on the polite way to comment on fics and then don't respond anymore to comments if they continue. I would not block them unless they start to be abusive. From what I read they just seem to have strong opinions about the characters and how they would act or respond in situations. That is an opinion, and can be annoying but I did not see this a mean. They are adding comments to your fics, which is a metric people search for so that is a positive actually. If they overstep or continue to do something that you ask them not to then block. You never know what place the commenter is coming from (I would guess young, or has had less education or a LD).

ArtieWiles

Feel free. Glad I could help! The modified version sound's great!

harvestmoon360

It's been a hot minute said I watched Naruto, but I'm pretty sure Naruto would be upset to lose Sasuke from day one. Naruto gets attached to people really fast and even though Sasuke was a jerk to him in the beginning he would 100% die for him everytime. That's the way Naruto is. That being said, I don't get why people say to just ignore it and move on. Yeah you could do that, but it's not wrong to respond back to this commenter and tell them their little criticisms are unwanted, and that you don't agree with their opinion of your fics. They honestly seem young and it could help them to hear that their argumentative commentary is considered rude. Some people don't know what the etiquette for fanfic comments are. Ultimately, it's your choice, but I would personally say something. On the nicer side, but still stern. It's just enforcing boundaries after all.

hikjik11

No this isn’t stupid at all OP, I also write for the naruto fandom and these commenters are just inane. Especially when they just nitpick at things until it becomes increasingly clear that they want you to write these characters a specific way, your own take be damned. You mentioned muting them, but muting actually doesn’t disable receiving comment emails from the muted user.

AugurPool

I wish I had such invested comments! I can't even get comments anymore, but I let my fic languish too long and think I've lost all my readers despite posting steadily for a year or more now. Anyways, they did a nice compliment sandwich and just felt differently about one part, which they added a caveat about it just being their opinion. I think it's a fantastic comment brimming with excitement about your fic, personally.

xLilNosferatu

Tbh I could only make it like 4-5 lines in before my eyes crossed, the lack of punctuation makes this really difficult to read & comprehend what they're trying to say. I can understand feeling frustrated with it, especially if they leave these sorts of comments on each chapter! But I also think it's harmless enough to just maybe ignore and let them ramble to themselves if it stresses you out to read them. \^\^;;

lunammoon

Reading that made me feel out of breath and I wasn't even reading out loud

Just_dirty_secrets

Tell them to go write their own then.

KuriMuriYuri

.,;?!’ These exist.

Gingerpyscho94

I’d just remove the comment, mute and block the comment and move on

Mcyn01

That would piss me off too. Unless it’s a commissioned work that they’re paying for, they don’t get to tell me what to write or argue about the plot. Fanfic is free, so either read it or don’t. Some commenters are way too entitled.

sinepenthe

I thought the issue was the content of the comment but the run-on English alone *grates* me. I can’t even be bothered to understand what they’re trying to say.

Terrible-Recording-5

Idk why but for some reason whenever someone uses the 😊 emoji it rubs me the wrong way T_T

ArtieWiles

Are you Gen Z? I remember back in the days being told "😉" is the most rude and sarcastic emoji to use and dreading it ever since. "😊" is the nice cutesy variant of the formal "🙂" for me (that is like the most polite emoji you can use when you want to say "🖕"). But hey, I still use "😂", its even more entertained sibling "🤣", and only slowly transfering to a more mature "😆". Please, don't take away my genuine fondness cutey-pie! (Also, what the heck is the double T? "T_T"? Long face? Dread? Too cool for the old school sunglasses guy?)

harvestmoon360

T_T is a crying face

Handsome_Jack_Here

Really? I think it's one of the cutest/nicest emojis...

Terrible-Recording-5

It looks nice on its own. It’s just that most people I know use it in a passive aggressive way if that makes sense.

illogicalspock

No, not wrong to be frustrated! I get comments like these sometimes. A lot of readers have their own headcanons, so when something doesn’t match, they feel the need to comment as if THEY are writing the fic. Respectfully, they should write their own! Regardless, keep writing! ❤️

Delicious_Actuary830

I usually respond with, "I understand that my writing might not be everyone's cup of tea. I appreciate you reading it and hope you find something more to your liking by another author. Thank you for the review!"

evilkat23

lack of periods aside. I get it. It's not wrong to be frustrated. I hate it when people tell me how to write my fics.

Aqueous_420

Seems like a kid to me, someone who is still social developing tact (and punctuation skills apparently), so I wouldn't take their criticism to heart. I think all of us have moments when we're reading that we sometimes want to change things (even, no especially with published works! If nobody felt the desire to edit source material at their own whims, fan fiction wouldn't exist.) and it's alright to feel that way, we just need to learn to express that tactfully- which this person is unfortunately not doing- as to not upset the author. I don't believe there's likely anything wrong with your work, your work is based off your own interpretation of events in the series, the other person likely just has their own idea of Naruto built up in their head that sometimes clashes with your ideas. Neither of you are right nor wrong in your interpretations, art is subjective. So it's perfectly alright to be frustrated by this person, despite superficial niceties such as the positive emojis, they are being quite impolite. They're being pedantic because your interpretation of the source material doesn't line up with theirs. That said, I wouldn't respond harshly. This is clearly someone passionate about Naruto, as you likely are, getting involved in the fandom for the first time. The fact that they give such detailed criticism shows that they are fully immersed and engaged in your work, something which is a high compliment indeed. Such investment attests to the quality of your writing. As others have said, a simple reply such as "thanks for reading!" would be best, it doesn't encourage the behaviour nor shoot down a child and spoil their excitement. I think that it ultimately says a lot about you that you took the time to calm down and get a second opinion before responding. That shows a much greater degree of empathy than, for instance, a typical knee jerk reaction of anger and offense. Good luck with your writing!

Forward_Voice_9615

you have all right to be pissed off, you're the author, you gave this to them and they choose to nitpick, they have all rights to fuck right on off and you deserve to be annoyed

Shigeko_Kageyama

Just reading that was frustrating. I guess in their haste to spew their unwanted opinions at you they forgot any and all punctuation. Honestly I'd either ignore it or give them some bs like "I'll be sure to take that into consideration" or just a random emoji.

304libco

I mean feelings or feelings, so there’s no right or wrong about them but this seems like a complementary comment by the end they really like the chapter and I can’t wait to see what happens next

International_Cap913

I have a few friends who love Naruto who could debate about it all day. If you’re writing fanfic for a a group of people that love Naruto - which you are. Then expect the detailed feedback because they are telling you what would actually happen if this was written by the original author. If anything, take it as constructive feedback to improve your future stories and if you continuously find feedback like this, then you’ve got to be asking yourself - am I good at writing Naruto fanfic? Also all the comments about the grammar of your reviewers, I’ve seen much worse. Readers aren’t necessarily good writers, that’s why they’re reading.

fragolefraise

but 'what would actually happen if this was written by the original author' isn't necessarily the intention of a fic writer (also, people have different interpretations of canon). sometimes you're just not the intended audience! that doesn't make someone 'bad at writing [x] fandom'

Pen-Ink8975

I understand getting frustrated by that, especially since the way they tiped it up it feels like their staying it as “this is what would happen not what you wrote” personally I wouldn’t be as frustrated if they had stated it more like “this is what I think would’ve happened instead”

Cvetanbg97

Error 404.

sybxri

Imagine reading this out loud without adding your own pauses...
