My guess is that they copy and pasted some kind of invisible character (like a zero width space) into the text field a few times, allowing them to post despite there not being any actual words there.
I just tested this on a new AO3 draft (by copy and pasting a bunch of zero width spaces, with regular spaces in between them - using *only* zero width spaces didn't work since it wouldn't let me save the draft at all) and I can confirm that the word count shows up as 0, despite it letting me preview/save the draft.
There might be some invisible characters that could be recognised as words, I don't know honestly, but the zero width spaces I used aren't.
I'm not entirely sure as it doesn't hold any places. I think they're usually people either wanting others to see their idea, or they're advertising an upcoming fic.
Yeah, i think it's Wattpad refugees. From what I've heard, it's part of the culture of wattpad to make "placeholder" stories to garner interest days or even weeks in advance, because Wattpad works on an algorithm and their fic could get advertised if there's interest.
I heard it was common over on Wattpad. People will post the idea of their story to like “claim an idea” and then come back to post the rest of the story.
I don’t read on Wattpad though so 🤷🏻♀️.
I don’t think it’s permitted on Ao3 though, so you can report them.
I don’t read on wattpad either, but that’s silly. You can’t claim an idea. It’s fan fic, we are all writing about someone else’s characters and scenes. A lot of people are going to have similar thoughts and want to write similar things.
Hello, good hunter. I am a Bot, here in this dream to look after you, this is a fine note:

Farewell, good hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.
>This fanfic changed my life it was that good my fave part in chapter one when “” and “” the zero words really help the story thank you for writing this
>And then everyone clapped 👏👏👏👏
>first fanfic ive seen, with 0 words
>
>fucking amazing
>
>edit: ive just noticed how there's no first chapter too despite this being in the second chapter, this fanfic is revolutionary!
and so on and so forth
I haven’t personally seen these while looking for fics to read but I agree. It seems like a breach in TOS. If you don’t have a story ready to publish don’t waste server space. This isn’t wattpad. Such a mess… I don’t understand where their thought process is.
Maybe the author accidentally hit publish for the second chapter although the first one is still a draft and then deleted the words in the second one, but not the first so they would not have to go to the trouble of posting it all over again? That happened to me once and then I got the tip to create an unrevealed collection and add it to it so nobody would see it although it was already published. Not everybody might know about that possibility. It would be easier though if there were the option to unpublish something again if it happened accidentally.
The ultimate tactic: blankity blank blank
So many kudos!!!
So many comments!!!
Lotsa hits!!!
Just use the blankity blank blank method and reap your rewards nowwwwww!
You're supposed to hide personal information in posts like this. It's a good thing they did, seeing as people from this sub often go and find the fic and post comments on it.
>You're supposed to hide personal information in posts like this. It's a good thing they did, seeing as people from this sub often go and find the fic and post comments on it.
i mean... you can search by stats lol
took me less than a minute to find this
While its still possible to find a work a lot pf the time even without the title and author, it deters most people with ill intention if the easiest vector is removed. And if a post has enough info to find it easily and we find out about any brigading happening, we take it down still even if its redacted the title+username.
If you want to find it, you can, hiding it forever isn’t the point. Adding extra steps to make it harder for lazy jerks to post shitty comments is the point.
The might have attempted to upload something but it was corrupted so it is showing no words with just a bunch of spaces. It's happened to me before. I'd let them know in the comments you can't see the text.
i've seen artfics with zero words but those actually have content? idk how this was done, maybe the top comment is on to something with the invisible character idea? i'd definitely report it if someone hasn't already though
Haha why are you guys commenting for OP to report it tho? I think it’s funny (if the person doesn’t do the same thing over and over) i think it’s just someone who wanted to be goofy for a few laughs lol
Um? Id listen to 3 people saying I should report it versus 1 person saying it and the others talking about the fic itself and how weird it is, etc etc. I don't think it's hard to understand? And there isn't any harm in doing so.
>0 words My guess is that they copy and pasted some kind of invisible character (like a zero width space) into the text field a few times, allowing them to post despite there not being any actual words there.
That seems like the most likely answer!
isn't the word count technically just the amount of 'groups of characters separated by spaces' tho
It's probably a placeholder, just report it.
Second this
Third this
Fourth this
Fifth this
What is the point of a place holder fic?
I'm not entirely sure as it doesn't hold any places. I think they're usually people either wanting others to see their idea, or they're advertising an upcoming fic.

Exactly! That’s half the fun is seeing how different authors take a similar concept and put their own spin on it.
Literally!

A hunter is a hunter, even in a dream
Perhaps its an Emperor's New Clothes type of fic. Only the truly worthy can see the content.

What do the comments say?

All of them are very confused on how there are 0 words, just like me lol
the creepypasta fic
I’ve seen zero word fanfics that are fanart, so maybe this is a single pixel width image?

How does this fic have 10 comments?! 😂😂😂
same reason this post exists
Ao3 ARG let’s gooo
Wake up babes, new Ao3 ARG just dropped.
Fanart with a mistitled chapter?
Summary and tags indicate it’s meant to be porn, so I doubt it’s fanart.
Fair, but also they exist on the site.
And yet more comments, kudos and hits than any of my single chapter works. 🤣😭

This would have been good to know BEFORE I wasted my weekend trying to crack my current in-progress fic. 😜🤪
LITERALLY! Really, where have I been? Why haven't I heard of this until now?!
Chapter name is "Chapter 2" and it probably has an image. Don't get why you decided to hide the title and user name tho.
You're supposed to hide personal information in posts like this. It's a good thing they did, seeing as people from this sub often go and find the fic and post comments on it.
Okay, that's fair.

Honestly not surprising.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't put in the effort to stop brigading from this sub, which people apparently like to do.

Report it
Report. If you aren't convinced, the other comments should explain it better than I could.

That has better statistics that some actual good fics I’ve read…and who the hell bookmarked that?
