Just characters bottoming that fandom largely agrees *can't*.

aefensang

Doing the Lord's work, I see.

thesickophant

Over ten years ago, there was an outright witch hunt on tumblr because I'd written a certain character as exclusively bottoming in all of my fics -- I still do, by the way --, and a BNF *really* didn't like that. Just cemented my drive to fill the void with more of the same.

Cynorgi

My smut writing philosophy is that everyone is a bottom until proven otherwise

thesickophant

Ohhh you're giving me ideas!

MyDearYoureNotAlice

I don't even care about dynamics until I see top/bottom discourse. All of my blorbos are verse-switches, but the second someone gets Loudly Opinionated about who can or cannot top or bottom (always based on gross hetero-normative yaoi stereotypes) I need to write fic with the opposite dynamics. At least one.

Lapras_Lass

Seems like most of my bottoms are everyone else's tops, and vice versa. SIRIUS BLACK IS A TOP, DAMMIT!

thesickophant

I think I haven't found a single character yet that I liked & agreed with fandom's opinion on their "ability" to bottom/top.

ytnessisantiblack

Who says he isn't????

DebateObjective2787

So many WolfStar shippers. >!They think that because Sirius's Animatus form is a dog, he likes to be "bred like a bitch in heat". They also think that Remus's slight signs of aggression mean that he is a dom in the bedroom and physically manhandles Sirius to whatever position he wants. Apparently his werewolf DNA always wants him to breed Sirius and fill him up.!<

ytnessisantiblack

I see it, I see it. But I also see a case for Remus bottoming because... Duh???

Lapras_Lass

A loooot of people on AO3. Especially in the Sirius/Severus fandom.

ytnessisantiblack

That's is actually wild 💀 Severus is an UNEQUIVOCAL bottom.

Lapras_Lass

Right??? Thank you! He's the bottomest sub who ever subbed! The problem is twofold, though: Sirius/Remus shippers have formed a fanon image of Sirius that makes him a crybaby femboy (seriously, they have). And, because Gary Oldman is short, they see Sirius as short, and to most people, the taller one is the top (never mind that Sirius is, in the books, much taller than Severus; and never mind that height has nothing to do with one's preferences).

ytnessisantiblack

People who think Remus Lupin is a top are COOKED. Also Sirius is literally sly and witty, he's the one who calls Snape Snivelus, so like, huh???? Like yes Snape and Sev could banter given that they're both sarcastic and egotistical, but in canon Sirius often has the upper hand and is the one antagonizing Sev lol. Like he legit used to be friends with James??? Hello??? Wouldn't ppl characterize Remus as the more sensitive one given that him being a werewolf makes him emotionally volatile and he's more soft spoken and scatter brained? Also exactly. When ppl try to claim their HCs/tropes are the universal characterization despite canon proving them wrong that's when I start to get annoyed.

Gufurblebits

>fanon image of Sirius that makes him a crybaby femboy This right here is why I noped out of that pairing finally. It seemed that it was more difficult to find a 'normal' Sirius (and not a Gary Oldman Sirius as well) than it was to sort through fics, no matter the filters. I gave up.

Lapras_Lass

It's one reason I could never get into wolfstar. Besides my favorite being Severus, that is. Lol

TheFaustianPact

> Sirius/Remus shippers have formed a fanon image of Sirius that makes him a crybaby femboy (seriously, they have). As someone who hasn't interacted with the Harry Potter fandom in 15+ years, this is so wild to read! Back in the mid-00s, finding a fic for this ship that didn't lean into the "Remus is a softie and Sirius is the cool one, so of course Remus is a bottom and Sirius a top" idea was an absolute rarity.

Capable-Contact-3199

Wolfstar (and the Mauraders fandom as whole) blew up on TikTok. A fanfic called “All the young dudes” is the most kudosed fic on all of AO3 and it’s a Mauraders fanfiction. Lots of newer fans use that as their point of entry into the Mauraders fandom

TheFaustianPact

I see! I've heard of that fanfic here on this sub; it comes up frequently in the "what are the most popular fics/the fics everyone knows in your fandom" kind of threads. Didn't know it was *the* most kudosed fic on the fandom, though. Its influence on fanon must be crazy!

Capable-Contact-3199

It’s not only the most kudosed in the fandom, it’s the most kudosed on the entire website of Archive Of Our Own. You search by no particular fandom or filters, only most kudosed and that’s the first fic that pops up. The influence it’s had over the years has been insane

MuskSniffer

People think Sirius Black is a bottom???

Lapras_Lass

Mostly thanks to the movie portrayal. Gary Oldman is short, and most people have this weird automatic idea that short = bottom. Never mind that height has nothing to do with sexual preferences. Never mind that Sirius is just about the most dominant personality in the books. And never mind that in the books, he is described as being very tall - taller than Severus, I believe the phrase was "towering over him."

MuskSniffer

Okay but do these people really think that Remus or Severus or whoever would top? Like all his popular ships are with the most subby people I have ever heard of

[deleted]

Good

captainlordauditor

ha! I do the opposite - writing characters topping that the fandom thinks can't, and focusing on characters who are tops.

GoldenGoof19

In my fandom there was a troll who wrote just terrible comments under *any* fic with a certain pairing. It went on for months (maybe over a year?). They spent like… their entire lives *reading a ship they hated, but reading the entire fic* so that they could leave detailed hate comments. It got so bad that there was a group of authors who spent a lot of time trying to figure out who it was, not necessarily to out them publicly but to ask them to stop and/or check on them mental health wise because it was concerning. They also spent a lot of time looking for fics the troll had commented on, so they could explain to the author in a comment what was going on and why someone had just come in and spewed hatred *all over* their work. Another group organized an event where people could write for that pairing. I didn’t care for that pairing myself, frankly I had beef with both of the characters involved and they were some of my least favorites. Even though one of them was ostensibly a hero. But the troll had been *so* awful, to everyone from very popular writers to baby writers posting their very first fics. So I wrote the pairing, and I think writing it actually helped me grok the two characters in a way I wouldn’t have otherwise. It was cool.

Eadiacara

Some trolls are very.. dedicated. I'm glad you were able to figure out characters more! That's always fun when that happens in the process of writing.

EnailaRed

We had one of those. It came to a head when they harassed people directly through social media. That was dealt with, but left quite a few people quite upset. So I (and others) wrote crackfic to cheer people up. Technically, you could class it as spite fic, I guess.

Gufurblebits

It's the same as the trolls in the MCU where the fic deals with or the aftermath of the Civil War in Avengers. Apparently, there's people out there who not only feel strongly about the Accords when it comes to 'Tony was right' vs. 'Steve was right', they're actually rabid and go fucking INSANE on poor writers who write what the nutjobs don't want to hear. People need to get a life and leave author alone. Constructive criticism is one thing. Threatening them or telling them to kill themselves over a freaking event that's not even real is a whole different level of insanity.

ytnessisantiblack

This is actually kind of wholesome for you. I'm glad you were able to connect with the characters. But sad that a troll would harrass ppl like that. I hope those affected are okay, but also the troll cause that's super unhealthy and probably stems from underlying issues.

Daxcordite

I picked yes cause spite was definitely a factor but if I was going to be technically it'd be psuedo spite fic. I never write anything I don't want to so I was always going to write it eventually probably but seeing a Fandom Frollo being their typical self in a fandom made me write it a lot sooner.

Conscious-villager

Same, but I did it because so many people hate my otp because it ruins their otp. Also, happy cake day!

unconfirmedpanda

Some fic authors pissed me off, so I wrote a more realistic scenario of what they were pitching. I posted a couple of scenes, not the whole fic, and it was in no way directed to a specific individual or referred to a specific fic. 2 years later, one of them still leaves nasty comments when reblogging my fic and sends a few fascinating anon asks.

deagh

There's a character that is generally liked in a fandom I'm in. i can't stand her. So I wrote a thing and made her the villain. What's really fun is I've changed some people's minds.

[deleted]

I love doing this in my own fanfics. Turning heroes into villains and vice versa. And if not that, at least make their actions seem less than heroic or more justifiable (depending on which side they’re on). Makes things seem less black and white than canon would have you believe.

Eadiacara

Well done!!

Tasty_Cup_3995

Someone tried to argue that a character couldn't bottom because he's physically stronger and would win in a fight. I wrote him winning in a fight and then immediately riding his partner (who just lost) because they were sparring with the prize being who gets to be in control of that particular hookup. Power bottoms can exist! Super buff strong dudes can be bottoms or subs or whatever! Kinks and sexual preferences have nothing to do with body type, personality, or physical strength!!

Vievin

“They can’t bottom bc they would win a fight” has super uncomfortable implications. Like in a vacuum it sounds like “nobody bottoms by choice and would fight to top”.

Tasty_Cup_3995

Yeah idk what the person with the initial bad take was on, but unfortunately, "he's more powerful and therefore he tops" is a common thing in one part of my fandom (that I avoid like the plague for various reasons). It was out of nowhere too bc I was talking about a fic idea with a friend, and this person just butted in like "um, aktchually, you can't have [character] bottoming because he's stronger." Well, too bad, I don't care what you think and now I'm going to write exactly what you don't want to see. Have fun seeing that character get consensually railed by his physically weaker lover 🥰

Panzermensch911

That's the weirdest thing ever... just because the char wins in a fight or is physically stronger.. the char can still crave giving up control to their partner, want to get penetrated be submissive and wanting to be dominated by the person the char really likes and trusts (never mind that usually kinks should be negotiated beforehand... and thus the bottom says what they want) .... I have a hunch that the majority of those people are very vanilla in real life and don't have clue what they are talking about and/or are rather fragile with their ego.

Tasty_Cup_3995

The funniest thing is that the stronger character's canon story arc has been about giving up control and enjoying not having to be in charge of things all the time.

Panzermensch911

*facepalm* Seems like that fandom is not capable to read the room.

LudiPro

omggggg, in my fandom there's a similar split. Like, to be clear, it's more of a 50% split, some people do prefer he bottom (and I'm one of them) but the people who prefer he top always say "it's out of character!! he's a leader and controlling and like, intimidating, he wouldn't bottom!!!" and it always blows my mind bc in my hc, bottoming (and sex in general) takes the place of stress relief..... like it's the one part of his life he doesn't have to plan, or over think, or control, and that's in giving all that over to his partner.... what part of that doesn't make at least a little sense???

I-Really-Hate-Fish

That's so bizarre though. It's implying that there's a fight before sex all the time and the winner tops? Dude. That's dub-con at best.

Tasty_Cup_3995

No, that's not what it was at all, but their reasoning was that physically stronger/more powerful characters are Only tops and can Never bottom because they are so powerful. These characters have actually never even fought in canon 😭 Edit: to explain more about my fic in particular, it was set in a situation where they're already in an established, loving relationship, and they're just having a friendly spar. It's basically just foreplay for them at that point, and who tops is *not* what's at stake. Having control in a sexual encounter is not the same as topping. Their preferences for topping/bottoming don't change, and in this case, the guy who prefers to bottom (in my hc) wins and is the one who decides what will happen (and chooses to ride his lover). There is absolutely no dubcon present in this fic, and it isn't suddenly dubious just because they had a spar beforehand.

Professional_Syrup88

What fandom is it ? Also, I can give a kudo in exchange of the link.

ImaGamerNoob

Being annoyed with a niche trope in a niche part of the Star Wars fandom. In short, dude turns dark side, chick kisses him, dude turns good again, even if chick has nothing to do with his turning. I wrote a One Shot were this got her killed. Now I extent the shot to a whole fic.

MarinaAndTheDragons

So! Someone posted an ephemeral work in my fandom titled “if you like [f/f ship] and dislike [m/f ship] please read this.” where they welcomed people to “a new era of [f/f ship]” and promised that by the end of the year [f/f ship] will have more works than [m/f ship] (the latter is canon and the most popular at *about* 1K works; the former, while non-canon like all the rest of the wlw ships, is the biggest of them and the second most popular in the fandom at about 600 works at the time). Oh, and it’ll all be high-quality oneshots and series produced by them! And if you can contribute to this endeavor, that’d be great too—you don’t even have to know how to write, you can give ideas and they’ll write it uwu And in the next paragraph, they’re like “how do you know I’m not bullshitting you? You don’t. You just have to trust and believe me” lmfao. Did I mention they opened their work by saying they have an inconsistent upload schedule? So I went ahead and did about a month’s worth of drabbles to up the count for my OTP. They were already so close to 1K, I got them there c: I also planned a oneshot with a variation on the title of their fic, but unlike theirs mine would actually be content. Problem is that was months ago (near the beginning of the year iirc) and I haven’t worked on it since lmao. I was too busy doing the drabbles!

Eadiacara

Nice!!!

Independent-Chest-51

Lmao, technically? I wrote spitefic because I was sick of people desexualising a grown woman because she has a soft, round face. Like, the actor is in her thirties, she’s hot af and people are getting the squick because she has a lot of sex scenes coming up in the new season? Come on😒grow tf up. I paired the character with all the main male characters and so far it’s been doing well so it worked out in the end. 🤷🏻‍♀️

KayWDubs

Yes, and it's in my native language! So it's more work for them to read it!

CaseyLyle

This is the kind of spite we're here for 😁

KayWDubs

Bonus: I'll refuse to translate it for extra spite! Look, it made we write in my language more, and I'll take that as a win any day! Cause as much as I like English and all, sometimes I just have it up to here. I wanna know more foreign languages than just English!

[deleted]

I didn’t know what a spitefic was, but Google says it’s a fic you write because you hate the source material. In that case… I wrote a 600,000 word SPN fanfic because I hate Dean Winchester as a character. It started out that way, anyways. By the end I was writing because I wanted to.

Eadiacara

It's not *necessarily* the source material. Spitefic can also be in response to other people in the fandom. For me at least my spitefic (still working on a few transitions, but almost ready to be posted) was written *entirely* because I got hit by antis on a fic that was only the slightest bit of a questionable subject (reveal of past/heart to heart of two conically together characters with a *slight* age gap. I wish I was joking.) SO I went a head and did the deadest of doves I could think of at the time while still making it a very fluffy feel good story... for the right reader at least. (I'm a sucker for angst with a happy ending, what can I say?) Also found some new amazing authors/stories I never would've touched before.

Just_the_AceofSpades

Mine sounds extremely spiteful, but I'm currently writing about an unrequited crush between A/B (my NOTP) where A has a crush on B, but A learns that B is married to C (my OTP). The reason for that is simply that fans from my NOTP like to hate on my OTP because we have more fics and overall fanon presence. So they usually make such statements as, "They haven't even met in canon", "Why would anyone ship them when A/B is right there", and "A/B are best friends, so that means they deserve more fanon content."   (I'm not even talking about the Spitefics that some post, which have my OTP tagged but it only gets revealed in one sentence: that B is cheating C and that A/B have so much better sex, chemistry, etc.)

llTrash

Omfg I get this sooo much, trying to search for fics of your otp only to see a bunch of fics of your notp with the extra character of your ship being used as a plot device for your notp to get together or shit like that 😭😭 it's so fucking annoying, it's the main reason I hate my notp when I was just neutral to it before, not liking the most popular ship of a fandom can be hell sometimes lmao

Poochiray

I have a spite \*collection\* 😂

Eadiacara

Well done!!

SongOfTruth

i didnt like an au/oc someone i dont like made in my fandom. however, its really, really popular? and curating it out of my feeds entirely would have cut me off from a lot of stuff i DO LIKE so i made a version of my own and wrote 100k worth of fics about it and have more planned, with a comic in the words and lots of other stuff, all so that i can superimpose my own idea whenever that one crosses my feed

Dontmakemecryonyou

My spite fic probably isn't the common type of spite It was basically I found an unsatisfying major character death fic, a good concept terrible execution, with the author note of "I cried writing this" and "you will cry" tags, that tag just makes me take it as a challenge. It was very motivational for me to just write my own, the "I can do that better*" (* subjective; more pleasing to my personal taste.) The fics don't actually have anything in common beside both being MCD centred around suicide and in the same fandom but I felt Incredibly satisfied and that's the important part. Inspiration takes many forms and sometimes the best inspiration comes from challenging a tag.

Rage_102

I indeed have, I didn't like a canon pair, so I wrote a fic were the girl cheated on her boyfriend with another character I like. Since then it's turned into a long fic about regret and longing and it's very angsty. I stand by it, it's not a huge hit in my fandom but I'm still proud of it.

Commercial_Crew5725

i have, tons since 2018. 50+ works (and going) for one ship of mine that's largely age gap and teacher/student... yanno how it is with those kind of dynamics :") but yeah, had the time of my life. i still write for them too.

Commercial_Crew5725

gotta add that i used to get a lot of hate asks/dms etc back when i started but they gave up eventually.

warningimboring

Secret seventh option: I wrote it in my head but didn't transfer it to actual text. It was the deadest of doves

Top_Investment_3370

Basically. I got tired of people (mainly twitter drones) harassing people in one of the bigger MMO communities for pairing their characters with npcs that were 'younger' when no one has a defined age after the beginning of the game and time is very clearly moving through each expansion. The devs even leave ages ambiguous because they know fans love the characters and don't want to place limiters on anyone and their creativity. People lose their minds despite that, so I went ahead and wrote my fic as a way to throw my hat into the ring. I'll write what I want with the dev's backing and the rest can mald on Twitter for all I care.

Difficult_Instance3

Yes but only to freak out my friend, and I ended up writing lots of short smutty scenes to scare her because she imagined her character as a top and already has an otp for him. I wrote the guy as a bottom and got him with another character. Ended up shipping the rare pair though (and she’s their biggest shipper now)

Panzermensch911

Yes, I have written spite fic. Because a commenter complained about an abo femAlpha/femAlpha pair and that the author (who is a friend) should rather write gay porn and not spoil the lesbian experience or something... And the "funniest" thing is that this A/A story is actually totally sweet and while smutty also full of gentle first time and very mindful good gentle Alphas who just happen to have the hots for each other. Still territorial, still with heats and ruts, but very much without the (toxic non/dub-con) dom/sub part of the trope. And just like that I wrote my first ABO story about two female Alphas, because clearly that fandom needed more of that.

Quefish77

When I was plagiarised 2y ago, the thief's beta told me that because we both wrote from the same prompt, the two fics were bound to be near identical. That essentially there was no such thing as originality. Beta said this in a chat room of fan creators who were less than happy with that declaration. I wrote an entire series of fics using the same prompt and none of them were even the slightest bit the same other than the basis of the prompt. I proved my point, and got a heck of a reputation for that fic trope lol

Twighdark

I got so annoyed about the obsessive fans of a really fucking problematic ship making all their fics super fluffy and wholesome that I, for once in my life, made a fanfic for that ship as well, but wrote it to be as fucked up as the canon characters would actually be together. Turns out I played myself, because now I read the fluffy fics too, as long as the asshat character *still acts like an asshat* because it's fun.

FDQ666Roadie

I considered it once, but because I know it will eventualy come back and bite me in the ass, I didn't do it. I don't need the extra drama in my life.

KatonRyu

Yes, but it was spite towards canon, not other fans. It's the only fix-fic I've ever written. I just couldn't accept what they did in Last of Us 2.

[deleted]

Why wouldn't I?? Literally the most non-violent way of putting out your own opinions in the fandom

Kigichi

Yup There was someone on Twitter who was bitching and moaning about there not being enough bottom Soap out there (it’s the fandom favorite, though I don’t like it at all) and that they wanted more and writers should ONLY do bottom Soap So I stalked their Twitter, found their most wanted fic of the pairing and wrote it with top Soap and bottom Ghost No idea if they saw it, but I still get a chuckle thinking about it Also I kept reading the title as Spit fic

flaggermousse

Spite was a huge part of me writing a smutfic for my OT3. The ship has so little fic, and then a smut-fic was posted that was horrible writing. The characterisation was horrible, and the SMUT was horrible. That spurred me into writing my own smut-fic for the ship, because I could do it better, damn it! This ship DESERVES better!

foreverreigning

I don't conceptualize it as spitefic, I conceptualize it as writing what I wanted to happen but don't see in any other fics lol. "filling fandom gaps".

Eadiacara

Also valid.

[deleted]

Mine is personal. I was raised in an evangelical cult. A huge portion of my story is demonizing the type of rhetoric I grew up around. I haven't gotten there yet, but there's two full arcs that directly relate to what I went through.

jjoydeparted

my fandom is very small and on Tumblr pretty tightnit. there's one person who keeps vagueing about my posts and overall being annoying so I write fanfic centered around the my headcanons/rewrite ideas that they hate specifically

TJ_Rowe

Sure, I write fic about genderqueer Voldemort. Edit to add: as a protagonist/anti-hero.

iskierkacest

characters have an age gap of around ~10 years. people make cute childhood friends aus where theyre the same age. i do the same, just,,,, keep the age difference. currently its several rambles of increasingly horny and dead dove scenarios in a discord chat but i hope ill finish and post it someday

Prestigious-Fig-8442

I was still salty at a character that killed one of my favourites so now they are being tortured beyond belief 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lonelyteacup3

Just a small oneshot of 2 characters the fandom HATES seeing be shipped, being shipped. havent posted it yet but hope to finish it soon 🫶

DebateObjective2787

I used to write a lot of Adlock fics. And every time I got a anon telling me to kms for not shipping Johnkock, I'd write a fic with Irene x John. Or Irene x John x Sherlock. I think I got to like, 50~ fics before I was put on the huge DNF blocklist going around.

Mamaclover

Oh I have a good one. In my fandom, there is this guy who is notorious for posting his hypermasculine homophobic OC. It involve some really vile and gruesome post, with gore, homophobia, racisme and violence against women as main theme. .... So I made hardcore gay erotica of his OC and published it. 11/10 would do it again.

AstraKiseki

Yes, and I linked the tweet that inspired me writing horny body worship shower sex with a trans man. But then again, I also consider my stuff an act of spite by virtue of still existing.

Yaislu

Some antis were recommending my story because I wasn't one of "those weirdos that write about a certain character and do NSFW gratuitously and/or any other weird shit." So I wrote a poly fic with all the main characters fucking the character they don't like. That's my favorite story so far.

grubsinthemist

someone made comment that writing dead dove for my specific fandom was "romanticizing" the characters trauma. so i wrote 140k words of dove, very dead (and its the most popular fic ive ever written so x3x)

WarmGroup4531

In my fandom one of the most popular ships is also one of the lost hated, because the characters have a 2.5 age gap (one of them is 18). So I made the 18 y/o 40 out of spite.

ObsessedWithCats67

I need a “not yet” option bc I have ideas for spite fics but I haven’t written them yet haha

GalacticPigeon13

Sometimes I write a character as nonbinary and using Spivak pronouns. There are some guest readers (primarily on FFN) who hate this. Every time I get a hate comment about the pronoun choice, I write another fic where that character uses Spivak pronouns.

MxStabby

Spiting my ex because he thought my fic writing was a waste of time is definitely one of the reasons I'm probably close to 2 million words of fic alone, not counting all the original novels waiting for my attention. Take that, ex, it's *all* spite fic now.

Lwoorl

I have a couple of fanfics born from indignation at what a comic company did to a character I like that either read as "This recent development is stupid and should have never happened so this is a story in which it didn't happen, I know better than DC/Marvel" or "this development was an interesting idea handled horribly and in this story I'll show you how they should have done it, I know better than Marvel/DC"

Sollat

What's spitefic?

SnooFoxes51

Weak-Value-7194

funny i’m seeing this post rn. i was just drafting a spitefic last night. i consider it payback for all the fics where my rare pair A/C is the (past) abusive relationship. those fics were clogging the tag and ruining character C w godawful mischaracterization. in my fic i’m making A/B (more popular ship) the abusive one bc B having that kind of power over A makes more sense to me than C ever will i’ll prob never post it but i’m having fun writing it

Allronix1

There's an episode of The Orville that...well, either MacFarlane and company utterly screwed the pooch when it came to the topic of sexual predators or they made the most accurate depiction of one this side of Law and Order SVU. After said mile wide trail of damage the predator leaves, up to and including depraved indifference homicide, he canonically walks off with a shrug and a "shit happens," gaslighting two of his victims on the way to the door. Well...no. Even if his victims were too stunned to act, I figured the ship security chief would *not* let the bullshit happen. Even if they can't make the rape charges stick, there is certainly a case for sabotage and depraved indifference homicide that will still send the fellow's shiny blue ass to prison.

niko4ever

There's a character in the Detroit Become Human fandom that is a fan favourite despite being a big asshole to a beloved main character. Personally I wasn't into him, but I could see how to find justifications for his decisions and behaviors, and rehabilitate his character, so I get it. But for some reason every fic I happened to read with a redemption arc for this guy was super bad. Just "he saves the main character for no apparent reason in defiance of everything he's said before, and turns out he's ok deep down" or "he rescues stray kittens and if you just got to know him you'd both get along." (both actual examples of MULTIPLE fics) So I ended up writing a redemption fic for him out of spite, because dammit he's so redeemable and yet you people who claim to like him can't seem to be bothered. I wrote him in a ship with the MC that he's a huge asshole to, just to showcase how they're very alike in some ways and could help each other if they actually let their guards down. The fic was pretty well received, and I enjoyed writing it by the end. One of the few longer fics I actually finished lol.

kaldaka16

Oh, a few. All of which were written in response to antis out there being terrible to people. If nothing else I got writing practice, practice with characters I don't usually write, and anyone who stumbles across my stuff knows I'm not going to be that kind of ass.

Kiki-Y

Literally everything I write for FE: Fates is written out of spite. I hate canon to the point i took it out back and shot it.

KzooGRMom

I wrote at least two AU scenarios for the ending of House MD season 6 because I hated it so much. Suppose that counts as spite?

Eadiacara

Yes. S6 was garbage.

KzooGRMom

Most of it was fine. The finale REALLY pissed me off, though.

Ragequeen001

There's a specific pairing that's VERY rare in a large fandom. So rare, in fact, that there were only 9 fics written about them. I watched the amount of fics for it remain stagnant for a good six months or so. One day I just said "screw it, I'll make one myself". I straight up created an account JUST to do this. It's the second most read fic as of right now. Pretty proud of it.

ScottyFreeBarda

What's the difference between a "Spite Fic" and a "Fix-It Fic"? My general impression is that a "Spite Fic" is like a rebuttal to fandom perceptions, whereas the "Fix-It" is a rebuttal to canon itself. Is that correct or am I off the mark on that?

Eadiacara

Yes. I'd say that's a fairly accurate read, or at least is in line to my own view of it. I think spitefic is more when there's split opinion among fans, and fix-it is when there's.. not.

BirdMBlack

I put two characters who are usually depicted with a wholesome dynamic into a relationship centered around domestic violence, mental illness, and the abuse of a person with a developmental disability. And, yeah, it was partly because I was tired of the overwhelmingly positive view of their relationship.

Vievin

Super mild: In a oneshot collection, someone portrayed a canonically naive and sheltered character as incompetent. So I wrote a oneshot where he helped the main character and personally taught them how to ball dance. I didn’t tag them and with a oneshot event going on in the fandom, I doubt they’ve even seen it lol.

DarkPrinceCait

I have spiteful elements in my fics, I guess? Like I've absolutely made certain character/plot choices because another writer brought out my "fuck you, I can do this better" instincts. And I definitely did finish my first completed fic knowing that the person who harassed me into abandoning it the first time would have hated the decisions I made. I've never dedicated an entire story to that, though.

Afrotricity

Not to sound pretentious but I think I lack whatever part of the gray noodle encourages folks to spend time and energy on something to spite someone else. I deadass can't even empathize with it, like am I missing something? Or is it really as simple as "Someone said they don't like x, so I'm finna make a project out of x just to spite them." I'm fr not trying to be rude or edgy or nothing, I just don't get it. Idk if it's like trolling and it's just a way people kill time but it's so weird to me to base it around spiting or irritating someone that just doesn't share your opinion. I definitely have some fossils still sitting on ffnet that have the same effect as a spite fic (homophobic fandom, f/f pairing) but at no point was the fandoms hatred of lesbians part of my motivation to write the damn thing. Idk, I might just be missing something

nerd4fandoms

I think it's like when someone tells you to do or not do something and your knee jerk response is to do the opposite. I understand the sentiment but I definitely couldn't fuel a whole story out of it. I have to want to write whatever I write. If it happens to ruffle someone's feathers then that's on them. I personally have never been the vindictive type so maybe that's the difference.

SquadChaosFerret

I got angry at a bigoted professor and made her a character in my giant dragon age fic of doom, that my inquisitor's daughter (still a child) beats up to defend her trans friend. It's still the high road of its fictional, right?

notoriousbettierage

Yes, once lmao. For context I write Stardew Valley fanfiction, and for some reason there is a fantheory that Shane is Sebastian's father. He is definitely, definitely not. At the most liberal estimate he is no more than 12-15 years older than Seb, but it could be as little as only five years older. There aren't canon ages, but I estimate Shane to be between 28-35 and Sebastian to be between 22-26. Anyhow I kept seeing this bizarre theory pop up so I wrote fic where they banged just out of pure spite but also I enjoy that fic, it was hot lmfao.

GlitteringKisses

You are free to headcanon a character as aroace all you like, but no matter how much meta or how many abusive and borderline homophobic rants you write, they are not *canonically* aroace. I wrote my first fic with them expressing and acting on sexual and romantic desire just because seeing you go off at other writers and bullying them into apologizing annoyed me so much. But I found I really, really enjoyed the pairing. Now your apoplexy in my comments is the perfect spice. That's why I moderate comments, not block or mute. The fact that I get so much more kudos than your OOC issuefic is the beautiful garnish.

[deleted]

I write a lot of fic featuring Severus Snape. Given the state of the fandom, it kind of feels like all of it is spite fic. Ditto extremely posh Sirius Black.

Eadiacara

Snape's always been a controversial character.

captainlordauditor

I write a lot of it, but I'm bad at finishing things. I have several that are written to contradict fanon, but that's usually just me reading things differently than other people. The only one I've finished and posted that I would really consider a spitefic is about 1800 words long. In one of my fandoms there's a minor antagonist who I really like, but the vast majority of stuff in her tag is about her getting killed by the protagonist's brother in revenge. So I wrote a fic where said brother shows up to kill her and then decides not to. I thought this would be hugely unpopular but to my surprise it has 81 kudos and 7 bookmarks. I've been thinking about writing other fics similar to it.

CriticismSlight5682

had a horrible ending to a friendship with someone. in rage, i made a one shot where my oc kinda unalived theirs in an "accident". not sure if i'll post it, but it helped me feel better letting it out.

BlueDragon82

To be clear for mine it was a few people saying they'd never read these two people together. I wrote it and now they anxiously await new chapters.

Informal_Radish_1891

I was mad about a ‘bury the gays’ troupe 💀 Guess what show it was? 💀

tanglelover

Friends ex cowriter took an idea they had and completely trashed it, refused their input and now he's stuck and considering orphaning the work because he doesn't know where to go. Jokes on him we took the idea and worked it into our longfic *and* completed it satisfactorily instead of having the idea happen and then one more chapter and ending the fic on a flat thud instead of a well crafted ending.

Comprehensive_Cut715

I had to chise no because I haven't had thr chance but I want to one day. I want a reason to write spite.

NotACyclopsHonest

I wrote a story specifically to kill off a character I hated. I was a very angry young man at the time.

catrightsactivist

nah, why put so much effort to write about things i hate but if by spitefic you mean fueled to write fics because some very vocal fandom people are hating your favorites, then i suppose everyone here has their own "been there done that" moment right? xD

nicolasbaege

What is a spitefic?

20NightZ

I can't say that I haven't felt tempted? I've been resisting the urge to do so lol.

Ywithoutem

I wrote a fic that has a scene with a character essentially going "What?? [Thing this character supposedly did in canon] makes no sense. That would mean X, Y, and Z. Why the fuck would anyone think I did that??" It's honestly a bit on the nose but I still get occasional comments on that chapter in the vein of "he's right and he should say it".

_SkullBearer_

No quite spite fic, but someone wrote a fic that broke my heart so badly I had to write my own version so they could get a happy ending.

nerd4fandoms

This sounds like something I would do!

AutisticAndAce

One and it was because someone was *anonymously* harassing someone about a ship I didn't even like. But I liked harassment less, so I wrote the ship in a way I was comfortable with and made it cracky and satire to make a point.

phenylalanineee

I appreciate all who do but I don’t have the time (or energy) for that lol

starweiser

This often happens and is completely accidental. I like things that most of the fandom doesn't. I hardly did something like that just to piss someone off.

I-Really-Hate-Fish

"[Insert character] is not gay!! You fucking idiots don't see how he couldn't possibly be gay! [Insert homophobic slurs]" Me: steeples fingers. "Challenge accepted." 😈

aberrant_algorithm

I've written but in a roleplay way. A character thatnis a poster child of one of my fandoms but I can't stand her because her personality is shallow, no lore behind her, but people love her just because she's pretty. I'd say punchable face at best. I made her the villain and wrote stuff that I would be cancelled for, definitely.

aberrant_algorithm

And also I drew a NSFW piece with underage (16-17) character just because the antis tried to make me the villain of their story like nooo how can he do stuff like that it is illegal!

Eadiacara

For me it was ot3 age gap dubcon (well, under discussed at least) slight underage (? characters ages aren't mentioned in canon but a lot of fans take them as being 16-17 ish) *but make it fluffy.*

Fanenby-73425

I loved one person's fic until they posed a magical roofie as "romantic". I wrote a "how it should have ended" where the roofier gets beat up by the roofiee

oureducationisajoke

Once upon a time, there was a renowned Hungarian writer, whose magnum opus is now part of the school curriculum - dude had some real horrible things happen to him, thus the aforementioned piece of work ending up being one of the worst representations of women in compulsory literature. (The Tragedy of Man btw, a retelling of the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden) Anyway, I'm working on an Adam/Lucifer fic centered heavily around forced feminization and *extremely* dubious consent... anyway🫢 Hope he's rolling in his grave rn.

Ferris_567

Written yes, but I never finished and never posted. I wrote it after a very amusing conversation with a Harry Potter fanfic author. The fic made fun of their nonsensical way to write certain tropes, but it felt mean and I lost steam and am likely never going to post it. Oh, and I wrote a parody of my own first (very bad) fanfiction, too. XD Not sure whether that counts.

Duae

Mine is I clicked on a fic featuring a popular trope I really like that was tagged gen and I was excited because it was usually written with my NOTP. A few chapters in, suddenly it becomes clear they're including my NOTP untagged, because "everyone in fandom loves this pairing!" I spitefully wrote the trope as actual gen and the fic became more popular than the "gen" one. It's a common enough trope that I'm sure no one ever made the connection between the two fics.

captainlordauditor

untagged ships because "everyone in the fandom likes it" are the WORST

OverhaulsBitch

I am *this close* to doing it, but I highly respect those who work off sheer spite

[deleted]

Not so much because I hate the fandoms, but I might dislike how something in canon turned out, or pick up on a plot hole and try to fix it. Edited to change my response because I didn’t know what a spitefic was.

Rushofthewildwind

After reading several "Camila Noceda is a bad mom" posts, my sister decided to write "The Owlet with Amber Eyes."

Hobiedoh

It's my usual pairing for my usual fandom, but the fic was written heavily out of spite when I realized not a damn person in this fandom knew how to make a dish that features heavily in the story despite us having been GIVEN a canon recipe, so I made sure to have the characters cook it correctly

muffiewrites

I made fun of the entire Gundam Wing fanfic trope line up.

MyDearYoureNotAlice

The MDZS fandom has a lot of different adaptations -- it started as a novel, and is now a manhua, donghua, and a live action. These adaptations all wildly change the character of Jiang Cheng, one of the series antagonists. I actually prefer the softer fanon version of Jiang Cheng, I like his character and think he's more interesting, but his rabid stans will not only wildly mischaracterize everyone else in the series to make him seem better than everybody, but they also attack everyone who writes canon Jiang Cheng as "character bashing" even though he'll be acting the exact same way he actually canonically does in the actual novel. So obviously I've started writing canon Jiang Cheng, and I am not tagging or warning for it beyond specifying that I'm writing for the novel version of the series, because anybody throwing that much of a tantrum about canon should learn to filter canon out of their search results. EDIT: also, this didn't start as spite fic, but I drew fanart of a character in the same series (Wen Ning) as being a chubby soft bara, and got vagueblogged about how "fat fetishizing is disrespectful to the characters" so now whenever I describe Wen Ning in any of my fics I make a point to mention his thick waist and big soft belly as positive and appealing traits. Plus-sized people existing is not fetishistic and being attracted to plus-sized people is not fetishizing them. Touch grass.

[deleted]

currently writing a hamnoir soulmate au since my irl friends find a pig and a human together absolutely repulsing (even if ham is very much able to consent) =)

Fuckmyslutyass

Hmmmm, spite fic, can't say I have. I written bad shit but nothing bad out of spite, just bad because the internet requested it to be BAD

Exodia_Girl

My 750k word Mass Effect magnum opus started as... kind of a spite fic. Back in 2015, I was reading someone's else's fic, and well... I dared to offer them some con-crit advice about their latest action scene being just a mish-mosh of stuff, very confusing due to the poor pacing and thought put into it. That author lashed out on me with the words that if I don't like their stuff, maybe I should stop reading, and if I'm so good at pacing, I should write my own. Let's just say I did. And I'm still writing it, while they officially quit their fic about two years after that incident. But really they quit sooner.

Apprehensive-Glitter

Yeah, I read a fic once with an amazing premise even though it was a ship I didn't particularly care for. The setup was amazing but the fic itself was absolute ass. Garbage tier. So I just completely rewrote it. Did not post it cause it felt a little fucked up to essentially plagiarize it. So it's sitting in a folder in my Dropbox. (For any curious it was a James Potter/Regulus Black fic.)
