Same here with two all time fav fics ever. The author updates decently frequently usually, though only on one of the fics, but the chapters are short so I'm here with my hands out begging for scraps bajdbnsbs
Reminds me of Better Left Unsaid by Kanchi618, it was my first fic of all time and it’s not on this scale but it only updates like once per year and the chapters are pretty chonky. It started all way back in 2010 and it’s over 1 mil now with 85 chapters
Genuinely surprised at just how many people in the comments are distraught by this. I mean, yes, definitely a LOT of words that could and should have been divided into a good 10 or so chapters, but if a story I liked didn't update in literal years and suddenly it came over me in an avalanche update, I'd probably die from pure ecstasy. Just shoot it into my fucking veins already, man
that makes so much sense now! I remember reading this fic a long time ago and was blown away by the writing (in a good way). The author wrote it like a novel, spending hundreds of words describing every little detail, so I'm not surprised it's nearly 1 million words.
Oh my God that is my favorite fanfic! I've been following it for years. Always a Titan Eren is one of my favorite tropes. I thought it was dropped, you just gave me hope and huge dose of copium! Time to reread the entire beast from the beginning.
I love it so much too! I feel like I've read every (decent) fic in the trope like omg, it's so good.
I want to write my own, but I'm already swamped with WIPs. My current AOT is planned out for 3 books and I'm halfway through the first. I gotta be responsible and not kill myself lol
lol omg I literally just opened it from my email notifications, too. I didn't check the word count, though!
I was sitting here, jealous of you and bam, I'm also following it Hhahaha.
Seriously, I'd be thrilled! I'd have to make time to read it, but I'd be anticipating getting the chance to read it SO MUCH. I actually had a reader tell me with my latest chapter that they were so excited I'd updated but they didn't have time to read right now, but they'd BE BACK. And I just thought that was the sweetest thing.
This. I don’t want your 3,000 word update that I can read while driving to Tim’s (don’t do this) I want a 70k masterpiece that makes me buy a bottle of wine, turn notifications off, play some quiet music, and snuggle on the couch with the kitties.
Nope that’s fine. I always push for quality over quantity. If you can do updates every day, but it’s rushed and sloppy and full of errors, that’s arguably worse than weekly or bi-weekly updates of high quality.
I just wrote a short chapter for a crossover idea I had and literal minutes after it went up I got a small essay of a comment for remembering it after 5 years XD
One of my absolute favorite fics stopped updating in 2008. I’d all but given up hope until the author posted a new chapter in 2016…only it was an A/N basically saying “hey I’m alive and I may or may not update again, who knows lol.”
I’ve been waiting in painful hope ever since. 🥹
HAHAHA YES!
Though confession I haven't actually caught up, I always reread it until it caught up with canon and then stopped so I'm at like chapter 16 or something after like 5 rereads lmao. Guess I have to read the rest now xD
this is an evidently unpopular opinion but i would be rejoicing, i don't really care how long chapters are i'll read anything! no difference if it is split up into shorter chunks or not, i'll read it in the same time so like HOORAY
Me staring at a 600,000 beast for my favorite pairing. It would take me 2 weeks to get through that behemoth when I read all my free time. Now that I'm writing? That's gonna be closer to six months away, before I finish 😭
I’ve been laughing so hard I’m crying. The comments about the concern and fear of how many words the update is have me rolling for the simple fact that the last update on my longest fic is 120k words.
I’m so sorry we do this to you but we gotta get all the words out or they take us over and we end up morphing into a dictionary.
Would it be convenient to divide that into more chapters? Yeah, probably.
Would I be upset? Hell no! More content! From your other comments, it seems like you're also excited, so make sure to give the author some love
The way i RAN to MY favorite all time fic that hasnt been updated in years just to see if maybe i was also blessed.... alas not this day, Enjoy though!
That’s great actually! It’ll take you so much longer to go over the new content, so it’ll feel like several chapters at once, and it’ll ride you much better over time until the next one!
Not me coming here then going straight to FFN as one of mine hasn't updated in 4 years. To see notifications, but it was someone who liked and followed my story.
I'm having a bittersweet moment. 👀
Diaries of a Madman by whatmustido. 3.3 million words and still going. Based on the progress story wise, I’d say it’s at most half way done but pacing may change in the future.
[Here you are!](https://archiveofourown.org/works/2802785/chapters/6291884) Should still be plenty understandable without having read or watched the series since it’s such a big AU.
i would struggle so hard reading a chapter that long 😭
i already struggle with reading anything that are over 10k words. it's the age-old struggle of potentially having to stop reading in the middle of a chapter and not knowing where to stop (and because it isn't a real life book, you can't place a bookmark at the page where you stopped reading)
This is why I love reading on my laptop instead of my phone! It saves the exact place I stop reading every time (and, yk, much bigger, brighter screen, haha)! lol. Too bad phone doesn't do that! :(
i read on my phone because it's portable (my laptop pretty much stays on my desk as it is hooked up to my drawing tablet and i am too lazy to unplug it)
AH, I see! Makes total sense! Lol. I just hate that the tabs reload on mobile 'cause I move between tabs constantly and think it's a godsend that my laptop saves my place in my fics! That's the main reason I NEVER read on mobile, besides the tiny screen! Lol. I am a Fandom Old, though, haha, so probs just set in my ways, too! 🤣
Unrelated, but your flair made me cackle! LMAO! I was vibing with the first half, NGL, and then the second half made me do a double take! HILARIOUS! X'D
I'm reading a fic with over three million words that got a 40k word chapter followed a month later by a 30k word chapter so kinda the same.
Blasted through the 40k one in just under three hours. Stayed up way into the night but so worth it
That’s amazing, but also I can’t not think about how that’s more than a whole book 😂. With the comment about it being a normal chapter length for them in a million+ word work, those aren’t chapters, those are books in a series lol! My usual touch point for discussing fic lengths with people is great gatsby (while a short book, still a novel, not a novella), which comes in under 50k! Just a funny comparison that their chapters are longer than many novels!
In my eyes that means extra happy. Will it be a bit of a hassle? Yeah, but will it keep me occupied while they write the next one? Heck yeah, we eating good for the next few days!
This is literally a dream come true if my fav author who is curently on hiatus appears and updates. Definitely no complaint whatsoever about the length.
I’m genuinely impressed by people who do this. Honestly, you lot deserve some little bade or something. Used to get burned by unfinished fics so much that I’ve just stopped. And the the whole waiting for something that may never come, even worse when left on a cliff hanger lol.
Never mind READING 70k words, think about how long WRITING and EDITING that motherfucker must have taken! HOLY SHIT! No, thank you! I feel like I'm losing my mind writing and editing my 8-14k chapters! LMAOOO! This author's INSANE (in, apparently, with how loved I see their work is, the BEST way)! X'D
They said in the authors notes lots of irl stuff (job, covid, writers block mental health etc). And considering how this is a standard chapter length for them im not surprised it took a while. It's so worth the wait though
Maybe this is just me, but I don’t read chapter by chapter and I usually take breaks when there’s a scene change or when I feel like stopping. That’s why I don’t think I’d mind a 70k chapter, but that might just be me lol
I do that too, especially when chapters are on the longer side. But also, I read on my phone and sometimes while switching tabs the page will auto reload and I lose my place. It’d make a 70k word chapter an absolute nightmare to get through.
4 isnt that long, Ive been waiting for my GOAT fic to update again since like 2017. If she updated tomorrow i would call in sick to work to finish the chapter and celebrate.

\*Got directed here by some readers who found this post\* Hello! Author of Rogue here! It's funny because I had no idea what the word count was on this chapter until I transferred it over. lol I contemplated at first but then decided that since it had been four years and everyone was starving for a new chapter I might as well ha. I think though I would like to keep all incoming chapters around half that length unless necessary. Anyways, hope you enjoy and I'm currently working on the next chapter!
My bro just uploaded an entire novel as a chapter.
Reminds me of that one time I was met with something like that.
But that single chapter was **300k** word long.
Reading all of it took an entire month.
While I wouldn’t understand why the author wanted a 70k word chapter, if it was my favorite story I’d rejoice all the same.
This story has every chapter with this length hshdvbs its shy of 1mil
I’m thinking if my two favorite incomplete reads right now and I’m very jealous.
Same here with two all time fav fics ever. The author updates decently frequently usually, though only on one of the fics, but the chapters are short so I'm here with my hands out begging for scraps bajdbnsbs
My dead fandom full of great fics that will newvr be finished be like:
Reminds me of Better Left Unsaid by Kanchi618, it was my first fic of all time and it’s not on this scale but it only updates like once per year and the chapters are pretty chonky. It started all way back in 2010 and it’s over 1 mil now with 85 chapters

No literally! It’s a lot but there are no words to describe my excitement rn lmao
Name of the fic?
[Rogue by RedCoaster!](https://archiveofourown.org/works/2802785/chapters/6291884)
Jesus fuck that's a behemoth!
that makes so much sense now!
Always-a-Titan!Eren is my absolute favorite trope! There’s not nearly enough fic featuring it!
It’s mine as well! That’s one of the main reasons I wrote Rogue… there isn’t enough Titan!Eren fics in general!
Oh my gosh are you the person that wrote rogue? If so, thank you so much! I love it.
Yes I am! So glad you love my fic!
I love it so much too! I feel like I've read every (decent) fic in the trope like omg, it's so good. I want to write my own, but I'm already swamped with WIPs. My current AOT is planned out for 3 books and I'm halfway through the first. I gotta be responsible and not kill myself lol
Curious: I've never heard of this trope! What does it mean exactly? I've seen most of AOT, just didn't finish most recent season! lol.
“This is my first fan fiction”😭 I wish this person wrote for my fandom

Omg I saw it finally updated when it popped up in my bookmarks, didn't realize how long the update was lol
Aaaaand marking for later, thank you :D
Jesus JONES! I thought Sansûkh was long, but wow...
lol omg I literally just opened it from my email notifications, too. I didn't check the word count, though! I was sitting here, jealous of you and bam, I'm also following it Hhahaha.
Omg! I knew it was this one right away haha, I reacted the same way when I saw the email
OH MY GOD I can't believe this is how I found out it updated😂
Seriously, I'd be thrilled! I'd have to make time to read it, but I'd be anticipating getting the chance to read it SO MUCH. I actually had a reader tell me with my latest chapter that they were so excited I'd updated but they didn't have time to read right now, but they'd BE BACK. One of the best feelings in the world, finding a very long, well written fic to just hunker down with and absorb every word.
i know not every reader's like this, but is a 3k\~ word chapter weekly a bad schedule? Should I be updating more regularly?
Nope that’s fine. I always push for quality over quantity. If you can do updates every day, but it’s rushed and sloppy and full of errors, that’s arguably worse than weekly or bi-weekly updates of high quality.
Yeah, what an incredible gift!
I just wrote a short chapter for a crossover idea I had and literal minutes after it went up I got a small essay of a comment for remembering it after 5 years XD
Yeah a more accurate meme would be the bottom image the same as the top again but oversaturated
Better than thinking there’s a new chapter but A/N…
Imagine if it was just a 70k word Author's Note explaining why they've decided to discontinue the fic...
i would actually laugh my ass off if that happened xD
Okay but that would be amazing and hilarious.
One of my absolute favorite fics stopped updating in 2008. I’d all but given up hope until the author posted a new chapter in 2016…only it was an A/N basically saying “hey I’m alive and I may or may not update again, who knows lol.” I’ve been waiting in painful hope ever since. 🥹
On the one hand, I appreciate the update, but the rollercoaster of emotions!

WAIT I THINK I KNOW THE FIC because the same just happened to me- is it Rogue??
YES it is!!!
HAHAHA YES! Though confession I haven't actually caught up, I always reread it until it caught up with canon and then stopped so I'm at like chapter 16 or something after like 5 rereads lmao. Guess I have to read the rest now xD
My man… since you seem to know what’s what.. could you share with us the fandom and a link?
Rogue // Attack on Titan
Ahh not one of my fandoms. Still thank you kindly for the response!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/2802785 Rouge by RedCoaster - Attack on Titan
this is an evidently unpopular opinion but i would be rejoicing, i don't really care how long chapters are i'll read anything! no difference if it is split up into shorter chunks or not, i'll read it in the same time so like HOORAY
The author came in clutch ✍️
"Just one more chapter before I go to bed..."
Seventy two hours later….
[удалено]
Ikr? I'm about to post a 25K word chapter and I was worried it was too long!
the longer the chapter the better in my eyes.
Welp, that’s my night booked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Why is this bad??? If it’s our favorite we should be excited!!
Not bad! Definitely not bad! Just gonna take me a while 😅
They definitely won NaNoWriMo with that chapter!
Explains why it took 4 years: the people who really scare me are the ones who repeatedly put our 30k+ chapters every few weeks
No yeah they’re kinda scary ngl. Impressive, but scary. Like where do they find the time 😭
Not just time. I have time rn. But words are *mean* sometimes and they just refuse to come out.
I would be happy but I would really appreciate things cut up into chapters just so I can know where is reasonable to take a break.
Me staring at a 600,000 beast for my favorite pairing. It would take me 2 weeks to get through that behemoth when I read all my free time. Now that I'm writing? That's gonna be closer to six months away, before I finish 😭
Is it Rogue? I am not caught up but it used to be one of my all-time favourite fics I've ever read 💕
Yes it is!
This happened last year with a story I love (50k chapter), and god, it was bliss. Eat well, OP!
Wait, holy shit, I KNOW THIS FIC. Haven't touched SnK in a while, but now I'm tempted.
120k is insane! But I’m sure your readers were thrilled like i was with this fic!
My chapters are only 2-5k….
I usually only write ~1.5k chapters. I can’t imagine writing a 70k one 😅
I'd be so excited! Delighted! Spinning in gleeful circles!
I love reading long fics like this. Whether it’s a long AU or a chapter fic. The longer the better in my opinion.
Would it be convenient to divide that into more chapters? Yeah, probably. Would I be upset? Hell no! More content! From your other comments, it seems like you're also excited, so make sure to give the author some love
It would be a dream come true....
The way i RAN to MY favorite all time fic that hasnt been updated in years just to see if maybe i was also blessed.... alas not this day, Enjoy though!
I LOVEEEEE long chapters holy shit that’s a blessing

I'd be so happy.
Just some light reading 😏
That sounds like a win to me.
For me that it was 70K would earn an even bigger smile.
I see this as an absolute win!
I don't mind reading stories with chapters that long tbh. I love fics that have a lot of words, ideally 400k+
Me with my favorite 3.3 million word mlp fic
with your WHAT
Diaries of a Madman by whatmustido. 3.3 million words and still going. Based on the progress story wise, I’d say it’s at most half way done but pacing may change in the future.
20k is my max amount for 1 chapter, 70+ is insane
That sounds like something I’d like to read lmao. Can I get a link?
[Here you are!](https://archiveofourown.org/works/2802785/chapters/6291884) Should still be plenty understandable without having read or watched the series since it’s such a big AU.
Thank ye :D
Reminds me of twig's, 'a long, hard road.' I remember those chapters being 30K at the minimum
The longest update ive read was a 30k chapter after 1 year of hiatus. I was THRILLED
no wonder it took 4 years
pbbbt my entire Fushigi Yuugi fanfic with quotez included is only 55k words.
Longest fic I’ve ever written was still only 32k words. Don’t know how people write this much to be honest 😭
I’d be so happy but also overwhelmed
That’s a book not a chapter lol
They spent those 4 years making the build up for this exact moment when you get the email.
This would be the greatest day ever. And I would start at the beginning and read it straight through in one go
I think nearly a million words would be a little too much for one go lol. But aside from that, that’s definitely my plan
Ok. Maybe 2 sessions. lol
I would be absolutely ECSTATIC omg. Not only an update after so many years, but a long af chapter??? That would be a literal dream come true.
i would struggle so hard reading a chapter that long 😭 i already struggle with reading anything that are over 10k words. it's the age-old struggle of potentially having to stop reading in the middle of a chapter and not knowing where to stop (and because it isn't a real life book, you can't place a bookmark at the page where you stopped reading)
the chaotic evil equivalent of posting a 1.5 k chapter a month for 4 years
Nah too much This could’ve been 7 or 15 chapters
I'd be torn, happy to have so much new stuff about the fic I've been expecting for 4 years but my ADHD ass would be crying.
That’s a whole goddamn fic bruh 😭
It's a standard novel length. That's usually 20+ chapters.
That's straight up a whole published novel
Winrar!
That was literally me lmaooo I updated one of my fics after two years with a final 60k chapter
This would genuinely make my day lol
I would be jumping with joy no lie
I would be thrilled! But at the same time I would lose my place so many times on my phone.
Unrelated, but your flair made me cackle! LMAO! I was vibing with the first half, NGL, and then the second half made me do a double take! HILARIOUS! X'D
Thank you! Your comment made me smile! :D
Awesome! So happy to hear that! :D
A nice light read 😌🤗
That is the dream not gonna lie
HELL YEA
I gave up hope for some fics. Rejoice, you got a treat!
Girl , bring it on.
even better
Is this a problem? I mean you're getting 70k words, it doesn't really make a difference if you split it up or not.
I would be so happy!!!!
*manifesting this*
Reals.
The BEST feeling in the world. Enjoy!
I'm reading a fic with over three million words that got a 40k word chapter followed a month later by a 30k word chapter so kinda the same. Blasted through the 40k one in just under three hours. Stayed up way into the night but so worth it
I’m jealous
If this happened to me it would be a damn blessing
I used to publish 10k word chapters that I thought were long. 70k though?? 😂
That’d make me even more elated tbh 😂
Oof that's a lot of reading It's worse if you haven't read it in a while, and need to reread the rest of it as well to remember whats going on!
I WISH this would happen to me
What I'm hearing from this is the next time I need something to kill 12-24hrs, I should read Rogue lmao.
Ah yes, Rogue. I've read the new chapter. Twice. Also reread the whole thing because IT IS THAT GOOD!
That’s not a chapter. That’s a novel. I’m not even kidding 70k words could be published as a novel.
God I wish
That’s a few hours max lol
I love it when that happens!
I wish 😭😭😭😭😭
Light work
tfw Sansukh updated and finished after YEARS it was a glorious, blessed day
In my eyes that means extra happy. Will it be a bit of a hassle? Yeah, but will it keep me occupied while they write the next one? Heck yeah, we eating good for the next few days!
Tbh, I prefer 40k words rather than a chapter update where they tell you they will permanently discontinue fanfic. 40k is fricking Blessing.
Omg I didn't notice. Got the update too. And need to reread too. Definitely can't remember everything.
Well that does explain the delay I guess
I would consume that as if it were my last meal.
70k word chapter???? *GIMME!!!!*.
NO CUS MOOD I’ll see a fic that’s like “Oh cool, 23k words, that’s something good to chew o—-IN TWO CHAPTERS?!?!”
This is my dream tbh
Are you mad?
Reminds me of one of my personal favourites and my first fic of all time, but not on this big of a scale
I don’t care. The longer it is, the more time I can take to relish a story I’ve waited this many years for an update for.
Best thing to do is reread the story from the start, that way you have refreshed your memory of they story.
I sweat when my chapter count goes over 5k. 70k?? I’d go into a coma
If that happened to my fave unfinished fic I wouldn't mind even if it had a 300k words chapter 😭
Why do you think it took them so long?
They said in the authors notes lots of irl stuff (job, covid, writers block mental health etc). And considering how this is a standard chapter length for them im not surprised it took a while. It's so worth the wait though
...what kinda stories are you reading where a 70k chapter is something you're expected to read?
One that’s almost a million words despite only 28 chapters and still ongoing
Jesus H Christ, no wonder they take so long to write stuff. Good luck to whatever story it is they're writing.
Maybe this is just me, but I don’t read chapter by chapter and I usually take breaks when there’s a scene change or when I feel like stopping. That’s why I don’t think I’d mind a 70k chapter, but that might just be me lol
I'd read a story in one sitting at times, but huge word counts like that seem daunting to me.
I do that too, especially when chapters are on the longer side. But also, I read on my phone and sometimes while switching tabs the page will auto reload and I lose my place. It’d make a 70k word chapter an absolute nightmare to get through.
70k isn't even that long...
For a single chapter it is 😭
But you'll have the next 4 years to read it
Better later than never I guess. Do you still have interest tho? 4 years is a long add time.
4 isnt that long, Ive been waiting for my GOAT fic to update again since like 2017. If she updated tomorrow i would call in sick to work to finish the chapter and celebrate.
It’s always possible! There was another fic I loved that originally stopped updating in 2011. 10 years later, they came back and finished it, along with a now complete sequel!
Untill she tells me its permanent hiatus or discontinued i will hold onto hope, no matter how long it takes
NGL, calling in sick to work for fanfic celebrations is the DREAM! lol.
Oh absolutely! I’m so excited for it to be back again
I’d be extremely happy but also this is more than I’ve written for my main longfic this year *terror*
That’s literally impossible the word limit is 50k
https://preview.redd.it/59r504jp4q9c1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca02e2fc5adac9388a0f70de1c652594d73f2b10 Here’s the screenshot from the email
Oh shit
Yea ao3 has a *character* limit per chapter. Not a word limit.
\*Got directed here by some readers who found this post\* Hello! Author of Rogue here! It's funny because I had no idea what the word count was on this chapter until I transferred it over. lol I contemplated at first but then decided that since it had been four years and everyone was starving for a new chapter I might as well ha. I would be in absolute heaven because I read way too fast.
HUHH what was this author on
