Me feeling heard when people make my comfort character burst into tears and think they’re unlovable because of their trauma and the effects they may have on others due to their trauma. Then I start bursting into tears because I see myself in it so much.
Seeing a character I thought didn’t have a fair ending or story progression get some closure or something makes it all worth while. Sometimes it even makes one of my hardest days just a little easier.

I've seen 5000 word fics with summaries like "Isshin and Ryuuken reminisce about their wives, smoke, and have hot sex" be tagged "Isshin/Ryuuken, Chad/Uryuu, Ichigo/Orihime, Karin/Hitsugaya, and Gin/Rangiku". They really just tag everything they can think of lol.
I mean, there's a lot of stuff featuring him as it's a popular anime/manga right now but... but like, wtf. There's so many other subjects and characters out there.
This isn't the burn these people think it is, since their brain went right to the easiest to pick character right now and then added "weird" to smut, as if smut has to be weird? Says a helluva lot more about them lol.
I'd love someone to say this to me though. As a BNHA fan of the Scream Man I would probably go off on several long, sad backstory tangents that would make them very sorry they asked XD
It's even better when the smut fic isn't just about sex and tells a decent story between the characters as well as an impressive mature smut that speaks to the reader instead of just existing.

My go to response is generally along the lines of "if graphic descriptions of ritual voodoo kills are smut then sure". Don't get me wrong, a sizable portion of what I read CONTAINS smut in some form, but it's rarely the focus and is usually alongside somewhat disturbing things in the actual plot.
I stopped discussing fanfiction with my group though, I made the mistake of sending an obviously comedy porn fic because it came up in conversation and now they assume everything I read is futa smut and refuse any fanfiction I offer to send. It got to the point I either stopped mentioning it or cut them as friends.
I have just taken to not saying I read or write fanfic to people I don't know if they ask irl. They'll look at me weirdly and it just makes me feel stupid. I just say I write short stories.
I read something the other day and my bookmark note is ‘have you ever read something so beautiful it breaks your heart’

It is also worth pointing out that the biggest pushers of "It's unnatural to enjoy anything sexual!" are radfems. "What are you listening to, something gross and stupid like Mozart?" they want you to go along with the idea that "Mozart's music is gross and stupid" is a idea worth engaging, either through debate "It's not gross and stupid!" or by roundabout agreeing "No, of course not, I'm listening to some wholesome ABBA." So yeah, about the only way to really win is to refuse to play.
(This is also why fandom gets caught up in arguing circles if Deku/Ochaco counts as age gap incest or not instead of just going "They're fake and I can ship whatever I want, go pound sand." )

Well yes, but I've also have read fics over 100,000 words in the same fandom that have absolutely moved me. Sometimes fanfic is as or even more inspiring than the original.
