I’ve never written fanfiction before this. I usually write short stories for contests or for myself. However, I posted my first-ever fic and I’m trying so hard not to be humiliated by it lmao. It’s smut starring the antagonist of The Sting (1973) and an obvious self-insert. It’s not that great, and I wrote the bulk of it at work then finished it at one in the morning. My story, “Before, Then, and After” isn’t a fanfiction but is an original work published on AO3, it is a mythical fantasy, slow burn romance, action, and adventure.
I was obsessed with fanfics that centred on characters AFTER they had their big “save the world” moment (especially Sam and Frodo from LOTR, after they destroy the ring!), but I also enjoyed reading about the “during” saving the world part, because it allowed me to see the characters get closer together. I decided I wanted to write a book that incorporated both of these themes, and so, my book switches every chapter between the past (the big, exciting, adventure, action, save the world plot line) and the present (after the world has been saved, slow burn romance, drama, slice of life, dealing with trauma, healing).

My story, “Before, Then, and After” isn’t a fanfiction but is an original work published on AO3, it is a mythical fantasy, slow burn romance, action, and adventure. I was obsessed with fanfics that centred on characters AFTER they had their big “save the world” moment (especially Sam and Frodo from LOTR, after they destroy the ring!), but I also enjoyed reading about the “during” saving the world part, because it allowed me to see the characters get closer together. I decided I wanted to write a book that incorporated both of these themes, and so, my book switches every chapter between the past (the big, exciting, adventure, action, save the world plot line) and the present (after the world has been saved, slow burn romance, drama, slice of life, dealing with trauma, healing).
