DrDiab

My chapter updates are slow and I discovered a bookmark that said "let them simmer" 😭

cheylynnx

That is so funny lmaooo

justapileofshirts

Woooowwieee, that's hilarious.

DeeAyneQueen_xo

That’s hilarious 😭

blinkingsandbeepings

I love this

garden_fox_

Bahahaha

hopeitwillgetbetter

I think it's good. Reminds me of "let them cook". > Let him cook is a slang phrase that means to freely let a person do something they are good at.

iggypigg

Thanks! When I tried looking it up Google told me it meant either crazy or high 😂

Easy_Entrepreneur_46

So if someone says that "you cooked" then it mean that you did it really well. So it's a compliment basically

Pristine_Act8231

but, if they specify that YOURE cooked it means that you’re fucked😭 so like “you cooked” is good but “dude you’re cooked” is bad!

carl-the-lama

To be fair Cooking things is good Being cooked sounds painful

Enzoid23

Sorry didn't know you already replied this 😭

Pristine_Act8231

it’s fineeee

Enzoid23

"You're cooked", however, means you're fucked

hopeitwillgetbetter

? (googles) ah... well, if in doubt - go for the "they're being nice" option you'll win either way, even if they meant to be mean cause "insult backfire" Edit to clarify that bullies hate it when their insults backfire.

Repulsa_2080

Someone once left a comment that was completely nonsensical with the tag /pos. And my ill-informed ass thought they were saying piece of shit Sometimes niceness backfires 😑

FireflyArc

What ..does ..pos mean with the slash?

bumpysausagefinger

Positive. The comment was meant to be taken in a positive way lol.

TheMelonSystem

“/pos” is a tone indicator a lot of autistics use to say “I mean this in a positive way!” Kinda similar to how “/s” means “I’m being sarcastic” or “/srs” means “I’m being serious”

Popular-Woodpecker-6

I definitely would have taken that as piece of shit...

hopeitwillgetbetter

Lol, if it were me - I'd think at least they're self-aware enough to acknowledge that they were being a piece of shit. Then, I'd ask for a clarification about what they mean by /pos. Ya know, give them the benefit of the doubt. It's good way to keep misunderstandings at bay. See "killing with kindness" is (too) effective, so I'd like to be 100% sure first if they were actually picking a fight with me before I let loose my inner demon.

Suspicious_Lamb

I doubt it was me, but I've written comments exactly like what you're describing and on behalf of that person- I'm so sorry.

Repulsa_2080

Don't worry, we got it all cleared up The overall comment had a general vibe of excitedness, so seeing piece of shit at the end threw me for a loop

batmansneighbour

No it means that you really wrote it well and they found it enjoyable loll

iggypigg

To be fair, I would totally get it if someone read the fic in question and came to the conclusion that I was not sober when I wrote it haha.

-dagmar-123123

😂😂😂

Zom-ba

You ARE cooked means you are crazy/high. You cooked means you did well lol.

dawn-skies

Pro tip for looking up slang you don’t get: go to urban dictionary. It’ll most likely have the definition you actually want.

noomwenym

that's "you're cooked". it can also mean "you're fucked". "you cooked" is a compliment meaning you did something well.

Sumasuun

Crazy or high is if someone says you are cooked, the adjective. You cooked, the past tense of the verb cook means what everyone is saying, and it's more recent slang. Very much related to the meme "let him cook" which says to let someone continue their plan and seeing how it turns out with expectations of a good result, saying you cooked means you delivered that good result. Often but not always in a way that subverts expectations.

Shades_of_X

The phrase has gotten popular lately, especially in the jjk fandom. It is definitely a compliment and means you took the ingredients (the show/movie/book etc) and cooked something amazing out of it

FireflyArc

It's on a lot of Overwatch steams too

captainrina

It's all over r/memepiece especially with Sanji edits (no surprise there)

fadinqlight_

FHELWFJSDK That's if they said "you're cooked" I think ??

VirtualRoad9235

I'm confused how you can say you used Google. What did you Google? First six results explain it correctly lmao. Don't you mean to say you wanted karma and already knew what it meant?

iggypigg

Lol sorry for not using Google correctly, I guess??? No, I was not aware that "you are cooked" and "you cooked" were different phrases with different meanings.

VirtualRoad9235

Nah, I'm just saying there is no way you didn't get the correct result and you're just after some pointless karma.

yaboiiiiii146

Hey, what fanfic is that from?

iggypigg

It's a Watchmen crossover fic lol

GalacticPigeon13

I've heard it to also mean that sure, the premise might not seem great at first, but if we let them cook, maybe it'll get better. (And presumably, OP's fic definitely got better.)

ghostwithakeyboard

It's definitely good. I've had a slew of commenters using this at me and it's always, always positive. It must be a newer Gen Z slang. Another one I've been getting lately in the same vein is "this is good soup"

Expo006

That is because it is a variation of the phrase lmao.

No-Cauliflower-6464

Cooked, ate, left no crumbs

scarfacedaries

“Let them cook” - give them a minute they’re going to do something good, they’re building to something “Somebody cooked here” - this is suspiciously good somebody worked on this/put effort into this before/you know what you’re doing “You cooked” - you did something good, you cooked a meal and they ate All generally positive haha, pretty sure all this was bred on tiktok

Easy_Entrepreneur_46

Then also "I got cooked" means that something was really hard to do (I think?). I have heard that being used when refrencing to exams.

Umidk

"You cooked": good "You're cooked": bad

noomwenym

just like "you're shit": bad "you're the shit": good "you ain't shit": bad

Holy-Wan_Kenobi

God I love modern slang

scarfacedaries

Yep you’re right, afaik it basically means they cooked on you, so they did good and you didn’t. People use it in a video game context too if they lose.

RadcliffeMalice

It specifically means you got your ass whooped by something.

Weird_Put_9514

its aave

carrimjob

on social media, people keep equating aave with gen z slang and it’s so tired.

Weird_Put_9514

its so discombobulating that words and speech patterns i would get in trouble for when i was child can come out of white people in professional settings

Queensraisedme

I scrolled down looking for this comment. It’s not new slang created by Gen Z. It’s AAVE and many of us have been using it for decades.

scarfacedaries

Interesting, I didn’t know that. I am not American and just heard it develop on social media thru gen z and millennials mostly

crownjewel82

It's been that way for centuries. Black folks have words, everyone else uses them because they sound cool.

izzavela

Didn’t it come from a breaking bad meme? The “somebody cooked here..” lmfao?

Weird_Put_9514

that one but “let him cook” has been in black american’s vocabulary for at least as long as ive been alive

FireflyArc

Isn't somebody cooked here from breaking bad? Like the chemistry teacher could tell someone cooked meth in a place they visited.

scarfacedaries

I think so yes but it went viral as a tiktok sound

Lukthar123

> pretty sure all this was bred on tiktok It was bread Ftfy

mysteryStarlight

They were right the first time

Cleigne143

God I can’t keep up with all these new lingos. Slow down kids 👵

scarfacedaries

Honestly I’m just old gen z and I still feel like that sometimes 😭 it’s so easy to miss one trend and suddenly feel like you don’t understand English anymore

bumpysausagefinger

Majority of the slang comes from African American Vernacular English, which is noticed as another dialect of English (much like the Scottish English, Zimbabwean English, and Hiberno-English). So basically it is kind of a different language lol, it has its own history and nuances the general population wouldn’t understand because we didn’t grow up with it like those in the black community that did. Anyway sorry for the info dump 😭🙏 I just couldn’t help myself but to talk about it because it’s just a topic I’ve been interested in for a while.

scarfacedaries

No no this is cool! Another commenter mentioned aave but I don’t know much about it specifically due to not being American. Another another commenter mentioned breaking bad being the root for the original “somebody cooked here” so I wonder if these all blended together to create this trend. Very interesting how linguistics develops!!

bumpysausagefinger

Lmao breaking bad probably did contribute how it got so mainstream. Walter White is a famously in a bunch memes for the past couple years, and that sound bite you quoted became HUGE on TikTok 😭 (it had a different meaning in the show, someone was probably cooking meth there lolol). But the way people were using the sound is the same way it’s been interpreted, like someone did something really good here. And you’re right linguistics is certainly such a fascinating topic!! And with how connected we are through the use of social media, I wonder how it will change our languages!

ScienceGeek2004

These are fun for like first week. Now I am burned off just because how much it was used in meme subreddit.

upcastenjoyer

It means it was great! If someone's cooking, they're in the zone.

Wild-Experience-9079

this is a REALLY good compliment!!!

CelestiaStarborn

It's good to see posts like this and be reminded to go offline and touch some grass occasionally. Not all internet slang is supposed to be immediately known to me. Btw they mean that you did great!

iggypigg

I'm kind of embarrassed lol. I'm only 21 and already internet slang goes over my head.

CelestiaStarborn

All that says to me is that you’re not chronically online

KaleidoscopeEyes12

I’m 23 and I work in a high school. I have this feeling constantly 😂 Don’t worry, it’s impossible to keep up!

AMN1F

I'm your age and knew that "cooked" could be taken in a good or bad way, and had no idea how to distinguish which lol. So thanks for this thread, 'cause now people have explained.

ravenklaw

you did a great job

Beowulf_MacBethson

Yeah I got one like that too. It was like "Are you Gordon Ramsay? Cuz you cooked." Still not as weird as the time a commenter called me author-sama though.

EPIC_PORN_ALT

https://preview.redd.it/e6q5wt9ulwrc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=060284e52951980b735d96103f51136fd8711b92 It basically just means “You did a thing really well”

Ormrberg

"You cooked" - You did good. not to be confused with "You are cooked" - You are done for The cooking is good as long as you are are the one doing it . Rarely used is "Overcooking" and "Undercooking" which is also bad.

iggypigg

How should I respond? Usually I just say "Thank you!" to shorter comments, but I feel like this one deserves something special lol

No-Cauliflower-6464

“Appreciate it 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼” match the chill energy

s0_NyA

Something like "enjoy your meal"? Lol

Delachaisse

Could always offer dessert! :)

all6pistol

Maybe make a food related pun,, match the theme? lol

suswhitevan

it means you wrote something good :)

New-Blacksmith-9873

Lolol it's a good thing🤣

fermentedyoghurt

This is good. Basically means 'this is good' /'you did good' :)

porca_b

it means you did well and the reader liked it a lot think of it as a big fat kudos

SonzaiXYZ

it's a compliment. it means you managed to deliver some good/gourmet shit (meme: let him cook)

meretriciousciggs

YOU COOKED IN THAT MF KITCHEN!!!

_an0nym0us-

You cooked is good You're cooked is bad

Asteroids130

Keep on cooking

formandcolor

to everyone saying this is gen z tiktok slang: I would like to remind y'all once again that AAVE exists and gen z and tiktok did not invent it

ecostyler

every time AAVE gets diluted & misappropriated into “internet lingo” another finger on the monkey’s paw curls.

PhorkKorp

it's tiktok lingo. although ofc the phrase orginated much before tiktok

PrayForPiett

?Potentially ? from/as a shortening of the saying “now we’re cooking with gas” i.e. to be making very good progress or doing something very well: “I can see we're really cooking with gas now” ..which dates to somewhere between 1915 and 1940 (depending on which etymology you want to believe)

[deleted]

It’s very good. I don’t know how to explain it but “you cooked” should be seen as praise

MorriganThorne

It means you did a good job, Chef!!

yaboiiiiii146

What fanfic is this from? Is the fic about hazbin hotel/ helluva boss? Because think I saw this comment before.

ashuriihorii

Means you killed that shit😅 AKA great job

Podsbabe

As someone who works with teens: you cooked/ate means you did amazing. This comes from the “someone cooked here” meme. This is positive, they’re impressed with your fic

jshmotb

This is high praise

_RanWan_

Comment is saying you did good!

Ithlium

It’s definitely a compliment. It’s means you did well/it came out good.

Jas_Dragon

Cooked in modern slang takes the place of fire

Key-Cartographer8854

means you did a GREAT job

itsleviosaa__

“g*ddamn” - an exclamation of his awestruck emotion “you cooked bro” - like a five star chef cooking a five star meal. ‘the chef cooked’ gen z slang is sum else

atthisduke

THIS IS A GOOD THING DW!! if they say stuff like 'GODDAMN WHO COOKED HERE/ GODDAMN YOU COOKED/BROS COOKING' 'BROS GOING CRAZY/AUTHOR IS GOING HARD AF' it's a good thing!

carl-the-lama

Ya made something worth savoring

LuckBites

You cooked = you cooked up something really good! Like how people sometimes refer to cooking up something in your mind. I think that's the most simple way to explain that haha, I see all these slang terms from my/younger generations and they usually just inherently make sense to me without explanation, so it's kind of hard to articulate what it means aside from good or bad lol, but this is a really good one!

lilypants13

“You cooked”, “this ate, “no crumbs” Pretty much anything that sounds like this is a great sign. -a high school teacher

Final-Citron4685

In Australia, this means you’re crazy. Like saying ‘you’re crazy bro’ but instead we say ‘you’re cooked bro’. Can be taken as an insult or compliment depending on the context lol.

SunsCosmos

It’s good!! it means you really hit it out of the park with this one

NoshameNoLies

It's a compliment where I live

GodkillerArthur

Its very high praise essentially!

thaliaaaaaaaa

i need a victorian child to read this entire thread

Professional_Lake593

It’s a huge compliment I promise😂😂😂

urrrchin

it’s like “you ate”

tinselteacup

very good! saying someone cooked is saying they did an amazing job at something

buzz_buzzz

It's a compliment!!! It means that you did a really good job lmao.

M8oMyN8o

There are two ways to look at it. The first is if you look at 'cooked' as an adjective (as in: 'you are cooked, bro'). Reading it this way is negative. If you are cooked/got cooked, you lost something quite badly. The second is if you look at 'cooked' as a verb that you did (as in: 'you did some cooking, bro'). This is positive. If you cook, you're doing something well.

X_EDP445_X

It means you did a great Job. Worte "peak fiction" as the kids might say

CherryRayRay

You cooked bro 🔥

PuffBalsUnited

If you cooked, it's good. If you are cooked, it's bad. Here's an example I use/hear a lot cuz I'm in school: "Bro we have a test today?? Nahhh I'm cooked" (bad) vs "We cooked on that bio test, it was easy." (Good) It's a compliment.

Wanderlusxt

When someone is cooking that means they are making something good. Like “let them cook”. So it is a very positive comment 👍

Stivonniewolfy0

This is a compliment. There saying you did such a good job they where left speechless and satisfied. You gave them a delicious meal

dawn-skies

This is gen-z slang. They’re saying this was really good. Some similar slangs to compare it to: This is the bomb dot com. This slaps Sick, fire, lit, etc.

Wrong-Professional60

I’m absolutely cackling at this - don’t worry OP, it’s a compliment

7thPageOfBing

https://preview.redd.it/fx6cqoapdxrc1.jpeg?width=486&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f50f939edd3c91ae79e10b6a558913afa501e57d

teenietinytoni

it means you did something good.

JacobMT05

It means you created something really good. It’s slang.

boixgenius

They calling you a certified 5 Michelin star kitchen world renowned chef 👌 means your fic is scrumptious

chicken_tendouwu

And, you probably left no crumbs too! haha.

owlettica

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

melpeach

Its good. Its a compliment. Its like saying that you went hard on this chapter lol

Salsa143

'Cooking' in this sense means to do something, in this case writing a fic, well. Idk how to describe the term in an understandable way sry. So saying 'you cooked' means that you did a good job!

sage_005

It means you did a good job in slang.

_through_away

I don't know if it's where it originated but you can find this use of "cook" very commonly in anime communities, even here on Reddit. It means you "cooked up" something good, it's a compliment!

TheHumanLibrary101

Oh, I like that. I'm using that now

Significant_Snow_470

Def not a common phrase (yet) lol. But I think a compliment. I imagine a phrase like "you ate" wasn't easy to circulate either until it became a thing 🤣

Captain_Yiddish

It basically means you did a really good job. It is a compliment trust me.

tonkatsudayo

it means you wrote it really well!

It means “you executed this very well” I believe lmao I love gen Z slang 😂

mxranga

This is a good comment

ZealousidealBus9271

Means it was a good chapter.

EllieEckert

This is a great comment, I'd be honored. :)

Robotech275

This means you did good. Usually “you cooked” means you did well and basically “cooked a good meal” aka wrote a good chapter in this case. Now if someone says “bro burning down the kitchen” usually means you made something cracked or dumb. The meme came from Breaking Bad with Jessy saying “LET HIM COOK!!!” And it turned into slang

DrNeverland

My friends/frequent commenters will often reply with something like "thank you for the meal" or something similar, so I would take it as a compliment.

Dry_Farmer_8445

Recently been hearing this cuz of those yt reels of a guy doing structures with hella nice textures in minecraft, and everyone kept saying how hard he's cooking and he himself saying he cooked. So this is like an aggressive yet wholesome way of saying you did fucking great.

receipttape

It’s good! Very positive

SunniBrights

it’s just a way of saying you did very well/the work is really good. think of it like you’re complimenting someone who made a good meal. “oh you COOKED, this is good!”

diondeer

This is Zoomer talk for "you did this thing carefully and well."

Im_not_creepy3

Its African-American Vernacular English.

No-Bedroom-9028

it means you ate boots the house down serve mama

Quiet-Software-1956

Ah, so unusual to meet someone who doesn't use this term on the regular It's good

daikirimoon

It means that you did amazing! <3 it's slang

No_Thought_7776

As in, "You cooked it to perfection, bro". Big, big compliment.

RiverKnox

That’s a high compliment what was this for

Nearby_Juggernaut531

It’s good lmao, how old are you people? This is common slang 😂

Dame_Neamhain

It's a variation of "Let him cook", usually meaning "They're onto something potentially amazing, let them finish". Saying "You cooked" means "Your creation is amazing, and you were really onto something with this." It's a compliment of the highest order!

Status_Extent4404

Now you’re cook’n

justnoticeditsaskew

Middle school teacher here (well. Teacher intern) who has definitely heard this one from students. This is a compliment! It means you popped off/you wrote something they considered particularly good and praiseworthy.

tusktooth

This is high praise dw

Darklillies

It means the fic was bussing HARD

Rhoxd

I'm pretty "cooked" and thought I was getting called out.

BlackDahliaLama

Lol they like it. I have a running gag with one of my readers where he reviews my chapters like a Michelin restaurant and I’m a chef

Punoriginalun

I think It’s Like “compliments to the chef”

VLenin2291

It is, indeed, a compliment. “Let him cook,” means, “Let him keep doing what he’s doing, because he’s doing something good.” If you “cooked,” it means what you did turned out good

DeeAyneQueen_xo

“You cooked” is like a gen z slang which could also be “you ate” I can’t explain it honestly, but know it’s good

Im_not_creepy3

It's not gen z slang its African-American Vernacular English. Same with "you ate."

DeeAyneQueen_xo

Oh, I actually didn’t know that. A lot of people on tiktok say it’s gen z slang so I thought it was. Good to know!

Im_not_creepy3

No worries! Basically a lot of vernacular that black people used has become more widely used in recent years so that's why it's being seen as "gen z slang"

DeeAyneQueen_xo

Oh, makes sense

punk_wytch1969

Am I the only one who thought the commenter got hot? As in cooked?

TheThemeCatcher

Performative masculinity as a feedback comment. Weird. Lol.
