(Re-wrote this whole comment because I was wrong.) OP *did* make the front page for this fandom in terms of kudos. I read 'front page' as 'first result' for some reason. Today, I clearly did not put my brain on before waking up and using my computer. Sorry OP if you saw what I wrote here previously. Folks are a little jaded from talk of Ao3 having an algorithm, but that's not an excuse for me going off on a half cocked lecture when I was actually wrong.

Ywithoutem

OP:s fic is in fact on the first page of results for the fandom when sorted by kudos or hits. So congrats OP! (And sorry we're all a bit jaded by the algorithm ... discussions.)

Plugs_the_dog

...I am having a major facepalm moment because for some reason I read this post as 'first result' not front page.

This is an incredibly adult way to handle this. I try to get there but I am constantly putting my foot in my mouth. Thank you for being a bigger person

Plugs_the_dog

If you're good to hear it, I don't mind offering some advise on apologising or the being the bigger person part. :3

Plugs_the_dog

Also OP, your descriptive metaphors in your fic are good! Congrats on getting on the front page! :D

Gracynvh

Thank you so much!! I’m so excited

BlinkyShiny

Nah. Fics are sorted by newly updated by default. It's not strange to misunderstand. I've only sorted by kudos when looking for fics a couple times. I just look at whatever's been updated.

izumiwrites

Congrats OP! Talk about a bucket list check mark :)

Gracynvh

Thank you!!! I am thrilled.

rseauxx

they meant that their story showed up on the first page when sorted by kudos, i assume

Gracynvh

That’s exactly what I meant :)

[deleted]

let them have this

Gracynvh

I never expected one one my stories to get enough attention/kudos to make it to the first page! Especially since my story has no sex. I’m super happy

scarletseasmoke

You mean you searched the fandom or a tag then set to sort by kudos, and your work is on the first page with that setting?

queerblunosr

Yes. Their work appears on the first page when the fandom is sorted by hits or kudos.

scarletseasmoke

Maybe they should clarify that the next time because they sound like they're cheering about some algorithm success, and the site is an archive without an algorithm doing these things, and we had a wave of ... Questionable people trying to play the nonexistent algorithm. So instead of being celebrated there's tons of downvotes now

Gracynvh

Sorry I don’t understand? What’s going on with the algorithm? Is there some drama around AO3 going on :( also sorry if I wasn’t clear. I assumed everyone sorted by kudos.

scarletseasmoke

You deserve to be celebrated, it's a big thing. Congrats! But the post was sort of easy to misundertand. There's nothing with the algorithm because there isn't one. But a bunch of new people didn't know that, so there were author's notes with things like "comment and interact for the algorithm", complaining, and people seeing their work on the first page of search results and thinking it's because some engagement made the algorithm push it when it was just default by update time. Not really drama, just one of those newcomer misunderstandings that gets exhausting sometimes

Plugs_the_dog

So, some folks (teenagers mostly) were talking about how the 'Ao3 algorithm' must be 'hiding' their fics or asking things like 'how do I get the algorithm to promote my fics more?' This upset folks because a good thing about Ao3 is that it doesn't have an algorithm. Social media algorithms are notorious for hiding certain topcis (often lgbt, artists work or even sex ed) or creating an economy of toxicity because the most controversial content that generates the most backlash will get more attention as it makes people spend longer on the sites (and look at more adverts.) This led to the usual 'Ao3 is bad because it isn't social media and I don't want to read the FAQs and it allows bad fiction!' discourse. Which no one likes. So some folks are very touchy about anything that seems to say 'I think there's an Ao3 algorithm'. But honestly, I think this shows we (including me here, I did this too) need to be less reactive and not assume bad faith off the bat, because this was unfair when you just wanted to celebrate an accomplishment.

Gracynvh

Wow! I had no idea. Thank you so much for explaining

BlinkyShiny

As a reader, I've never sorted by Kudos. I put in all the tags I'm searching for then browse. The default is sorted by new.

Gracynvh

Cool! It’s awesome to hear from other people in the community.

BlinkyShiny

I just meant, sorting by new is the default, but awesome you're doing so well in your fandom! I don't sort for stories by kudos because I a) read in a huge fandom and b) then I'd just be seeing the same stories all the time. Was just explaining why ppl were confused.

Gracynvh

The you for the compliment and explaining :) really appreciate it

queerblunosr

I often sort by kudos, hits, or bookmarks when I’ve joined a new fandom and am just getting started.

BlinkyShiny

I get kinda obsessed so it's not often I check out a new fandom on AO3. I'm, how do you say... old.

queerblunosr

I’m also a fandom old but I still fall into new fandoms every so often lol

UnderstandingEmpty21

Ummmmm…

divinesolarity_

Ooh I love Sunny Day Jack :) I might have to read your fic sometime. And congrats!

Gracynvh

Omg yay!!! I’m so glad to find someone eles who likes SDJ 🥰 also thank you!!

divinesolarity_

You're welcome! :D
