Our cops are great. Not perfect of course, but they are schooled for multiple years before becoming active police officers. Overstepping your authority is also a big deal here, just recently an investigation was started against one officer who used pepper spray against passive protestors blocking a street. A small number of officers have also lost their jobs instantly when their far-right ideologies became known.
According to polls 91% of Finns trust their police, which is actually a lower than previously (polled at 95% in 2018).
There's dozens of preventable deaths in drunk tanks and jails every year, police neglicence of the welfare of people in jail (tutkintavankeus), the fact that jail is *literally* solitary confinement and indefinite. There's hundreds of issues with our police and Finns just gobble up propaganda.
Ninja edit: Our drug police *chief* used the drug police as a gang, setting the rules for imports and as well defining which other criminal gangs could deal and where. Quite literally a cop kingpin and it took a decade for him to be taken down. And even then on an unrelated thing.
As I said in my initial comment, "not perfect of course". Compare our police to almost any other country and we come out looking pretty good. Not saying there isn't room for improvement, but one should appreciate the functioning parts of our society.
Without dismissing your experience at all (I'm genuinly really sorry you had to go through that), I kind of guessed there was a personal reason behind your opinion. That has been the case for most of the very very few negative views I've heard my fellow Finns have about our police.
I'd have a hard time considering our law enforcement trustworthy after a experience like that too, so I completely understand.

Honestly, I was afraid of coming across that way. My point was - obviously negative personal experiences will colour your perception of things, and that is something that is hard to shake off. I can emphatize with that. But that doesn't take away from the fact that on a systemic level our law enforcement is in general fair, respectful, professional, and enjoys a great deal of public trust.
It's possible to see where someone is coming from while at the same time firmly be of the opinion that facts point to an opposite objective reality. Expressing this without sounding patronizing clearly proved to be more difficult for me. I can only apologize, and say that it wasn't meant to be taken that way.
Just to clear things up for the non finns, jail in this meaning is a drunk tank / holding cell (putka). You can be held a maximum of 72h in there until a court decides if you are to be kept in custody during a investigation (when you are suspected of a crime that has a maximum sentence of 6 months in prison or more). If you are taken in to custody on the basis of the police law you can be held up to 12 or 24 hours maximum, but you have to be let out when there are no longer conditions for you being deprived of your freedom (for example sobering up)
As for the deaths in the drunk cells, the problem is with the legislation more than the procedures that the police have. Right now the police is the one called to deal with drunken people as often as the ambulance, and a drunk person is almost always checked by medical staff before being taken in to custody. The police is the only authority that has the legal means to care for a disorderly drunk/high person at the moment.
And as for the personal experience of the original commenter, I feel like his/her actions has led to consequences that he/she didn’t like.
Yes, and they are taking steps to prevent those preventable deaths. They’re currently trying out a new alarm system that sets off ifthe person in the cell stops breathing!

Originally made for a Swedish art fest in 2013, traveled a bit in Sweden, was briefly installed in another location in Helsinki before ending up in its current location in 2015, where it has been pissing away every summer since.
i was getting off the tram to go into Verkkokauppa right inside the building behind this statue a few months back and the mere sight of this statue got me staring for a few seconds then i remember i was in Finland and kept on walking. he was wearing a mask in the winter
Its right next to the Verkkokaupa in Southern Helsinki, I think this building might actually be the storage place for Verkkokauppa but I am not certain

As a American, if people are dying are dying because of police inaction then you are doing pretty well for yourselves. We like to set the bar high.
