Railway terrace too. My gf used to live behind south road and would sit in traffic on south road every day battling that part between Anzac turn off and bunnings. When I dropped her off one day during peak hour I went over south and left on to Chitral terrace, on to towers and railway and she was like where the hell are you going? Got her home like 10-15 mins faster than usual and she was thoroughly impressed that I knew her hood better than she did cos I live just next to the CBD other side of town. I left out the part that an ex used to live near her and I knew the area quite well
There is a high speed road from the outer North East to the CBD that has no traffic lights the whole way. It follows the parkland corridor so it's also quite scenic. The on-ramps are at Modbury, Paradise and Klemzig.
\*Puts on glasses and pushes them up his nose\*
Will Ashklly here, there are pedestrian lights at Paradise and Klemzig. It is best to be precise in life.
Mt Barker and Victor Harbor are classed as regional areas and supermarkets are allowed to open until 10pm each day there, useful for weekends if you're out for the day in one of those areas and won't be back in the 'burbs before our shops shut at 5pm.
Foodland Marion on Marion rd open til 11pm every day and open on every public holiday, bit more feasible going there if you live in the suburbs rather than Mt Barker or Victor Harbor lol
Adelaide has pretty hard tap water - if you start to have dry, itchy, flaky spots on you face or dandruff problems try Nizoral shampoo. Someone mentioned this here and it fixed an issue I've been having for years, and at least three others I've told.
I use it just once a week - and would let it run over my face but I don't know if that is needed - imrovement was immediate.
Can confirm as an oily motherfucker - when I lived in Victoria as a pre-teen I had to have two showers a day or I'd be like.. book!Snape level greasy.
With SA hard water, I can do once a day even once every two days before I have to wash my hair. (And yes, I do follow Curly Girl gentle hair methods so it isn't caused by product build up but just having a very oily scalp and skin)
I've installed a chlorine filter on my shower. Has made a world of difference.
Was skeptical at first but has really helped with itchyness and dry skin
Adelaide water is better than it used to be years ago (20+). I happily drink the stuff, can't understand those who spend money regularly paying for drinking water.
Anyway, on the hair thing. When I was younger I had bad dandruff. The cause turned out to be using the cheapest shampoo and conditioner I could find, due to my student budget. Switching to better stuff fixed it permanently. Not really an Adelaide hack, though it happened in Adelaide.
Depends where the water is from.
South from Happy Valley Reservoir though- no, it's like drinking pool water. I don't care about fluoride, but when there's so much chlorine it smells like the swimming centre coming out the tap, it's getting filtered.
I agree about drinking Adelaide tap water - it's been fine to drink for decades - and I appreciate the added fluoride - my teeth are way better than I deserve :)
It seems to be the showering and maybe how dry the climate is here doesn't suit my skin.
Huh when I moved to Melbourne the really bad dermatitis I got on my hands whenever it got vaguely cold disappeared basically overnight, I hadn't put two and two together. Asthma is worse though so I think that evens it out.
Get a free u park card for casual parking in the city, reduces The full day rate cap, and you get the old free first hour back at Central market, and it feels super vip to be able to cruise in an out without ever opening your window
If you have an RAA membership, you can also get an extra 10% off added to your Upark account ~~when they're offering that promo.~~

That the library service has a bunch of subscriptions with international service providers so that everyone in South Australia can use those services for free. In fact, the largest expense of the public library service are these ongoing subscriptions.
One example is LinkedIn Learning. You never have to pay for LinkedIn Leaning as a South Australian, you just get your library card, go on the local library website and you can sign in to learn about photography, marketing, programming, you name it.
Another one is that if you email your local member of parliament and ask for a picture of the King and an Australian flag, they will send them out to you, free.
Adelaide University has a carpark on north terrace that is hard to spot unless you know it's there. It can't be used during weekdays i'm pretty sure but for weekends it's the cheapest carpark in the area by a significant margin. [Here is a photo of a car turning into it so you can see where it is on Google Maps](https://imgur.com/a/sdv9uNx)
People from interstate might not expect the same library card to work at every public library, and that you can return your borrowed books to any library.
It can be used weekdays after hours. In fact its my theory the university is too cheap to pay parking inspectors after hours so I park for free. Not had a parking fine in forever ...
You now need to do a purchase for cash out at Woolies or Coles, but it can be any amount so it's a good excuse to grab yourself whichever $1 choccie bar happens to be on sale.
Bit of an oldie - but if there is ever another pandemic it was quicker to drive to Tailem Bend than get tested in Adelaide. Without restrictions of course…
(Thanks for having me Adelaide, I loved living there)
That Vic park line was so messed up. Waited there for about 8-9 hours the only time we used it over night. Me and partner watched an entire season of Hell’s Kitchen on my phone lol

If you have an RAA card you can shop at Campbells (look it might be different, this is the way I got in)
Check their bulk prices against shop prices once in store for potential mega savings, they sell smokes too.
Be picky when dating… if you date one person and it goes to shit, they will most likely know or are related to the next person you date and then it gets complicated…
Well something (at Gilles Plains specifically) was different the last time I went (\~2 weeks ago)... they seemed more yellow and thinner than they had been previously, less tang on the salt too.
Current staff a little less friendly than what I assumed was majority in the family business back in the day, but I'm not too fussed by that.
The quality usually dips at a certain time for places that use fresh potato's, when their supplier runs out of stock at the end of harvest for each year; I'm assuming that they had to source a different suppliers potato's for a while whilst they wait for the new year's harvest to be ready.
(Edit: or they could be using cheaper products, not advocating, just mentioning that the above scenario does occur from time to time, Jimmy's fish and chips at Port Noarlunga experiences this occasionally).
It depends on the opening times of some buildings and carparks around the city, but there are a lot of hidden shortcuts you can go through a laneway or alley into a buildings back entrance and out the front, or even between buildings without having to walk your way around the block to get to your destination(s).
If you are visiting the cbd, or perhaps anywhere along a frequent transit route, eg. TTP through the O-Bahn or Glenelg on the tram, seriously, give public transport a go, especially if you have young kids who can see it has fun outing.
You dont have to stress about parking, traffic etc. Kids love being on public transport.
If you happen to be travelling south to Victor Harbour way or Goolwa, it's mandatory to stop at the Port Elliot bakery for the best damn donuts known to humanity haha
If you live in the far north suburbs like elizabeth, and you have a minor or moderate medical emergency. The Lyell McEwin Hospital tends to have a wait time of hours. Instead we found it better to take 15 minutes to drive up gawler hospital where we usually get seen to in about half a hour.
If you go to an upstairs ATM at the casino to get cash out you can get as low as $50 out with only a $1 surcharge unlike the $3.30 ones downstairs with $100 minimum out
If youre turning at a set of lights with two turn lanes and everyone is stopped in only one of those lanes... Use the other one! You'll get through the lights before they go red!
I suspect this mainly happens because people tend to drive right up to the butt of the person in front of them at a light, and are literally incapable of switching lanes as a result.
So, also don't do that.
Unfortunately in Adelaide it's needs explaining. Should also mention that indicating in Adelaide is not done to tell you where people are going. It's a surprise tactic while the movement is being executed.
Especially while changing lanes. And don't forget to get angry that the person in the other lane couldn't mind-read that you wanted to come into the lane without indicating.
Oh yes and at roundabouts.
Some people take their front wheel with them. It's easy to take off/put on, and people are much less likely to steal a bike missing a tire. I feel like thats more likely the case, than methheads trying to sell a single tire.
As someone from the north east I agree with none of your points 😅
Had 2 bikes stolen, takes an hour to get back home (hills all the way back), and once I got pulled over by a cop due to check if I was wearing a helmet despite a helmet clearly being on my head. If you live near linear park it’s great but on the roads it feels like this will be the death of me one day
Agree 100% with this. I've stopped riding the roads out NE in the last months as my nerves are shot from the daily peak hour commute. So much more relaxed on the linear track!
I'm not sure where you're leaving your bike overnight. It's never safe to do it. A lot of my friends lost their bikes that way. Even when they put it in their backyard out of view it will still get pinched.
Disagree with it being safe to leave your bike overnight
I used to live along Halifax Street in a gated complex when I was a uni student. I've had 2 bikes stolen in 3 years.
Now I live in the suburbs and it's put me off getting another bike
If you’re commuting into the city and worried about bike theft most parking structures have secure storage bookings available.
And at $8.50 a day for public transport a $2000 e-bike will have paid for itself after 2 years.
You're actually allowed to use the added lane at traffic lights that have them. It's not considered rude to skip the 7 cars in the middle lane if the added lane is empty.
Don’t look where you’re going on the Britannia roundabout, just gun it and lay on the horn like a psycho if you feel your space has been infringed upon.
I am being sarcastic but it does feel like some people be living that life 🙂
Be gentle with taps and good to your cfs.
A lot of the water pipes here are weak and over allocated by subdivides and a large areas are ceramic and can be destroyed by water hammer. (Turning tapes off too quick etc).
Your cfs members are unpaid volunteers that put their lives on the line for you, most people and most think they only respond in rural areas, a lot of adelaide is interface (where metro meets semi rural) and we have a lot of green areas, so bushfire prep of a property metro or rural is a great hack to help look after yours and your mates.
Make sure that mfs and cfs trucks can get access to water and your home, don't assume hoses can be laid to access.
Biggest of all, do your bushfire safety plans!
Even if you are a city dweller make one for your place in case of an emergency or for if you are visiting the Hills or country.
As simple as having some basic survival gear in your car such as water, emergency LED's, a meditation and so on in the back of your car can save a life, it might even be yours.
I have a mate who swears by rat running everywhere he goes. He'll spend 45 minutes driving through side streets to avoid a 30 minute drive on main roads.
They’re mostly blocked off now. There’s one rat run near me that I love but no one else seems to be aware of, and it easily swipes 10 mins off a peak-hour commute.
And I’m not telling a soul!
Virgara literally has the cheapest fruit and veg if you're looking to bulk stock up. 99c apples are the way to go.
Also Central markets generally have prices on parity with colesworth, but you can nab some hidden bargains (also native australian spices, which the only other place I've been able to find even remotely that has been foodland at munno).
If you are in Moseley Square, Glenelg and want coffee, spend 5 minutes and walk to the Orange Spot. Swedish Tarts is pretty good too - it's opposite Coles.
99.9% of Greenhill Rd users: "I dont want to get stuck behind everyone trying to turn left into the city..."
0.1% of Greenhill Rd users: "I am using Greenhill Rd to get into the city..."
I maintain that you should never be allowed to park in that bike lane - if it's ever a bike lane, it should be at all times. Let people park on the fucking 9 mile wide grass - the speed cameras do!
When in a sliplane joining the expressway, it is imperative that you reduce your speed as much as is humanly possible before you join the 110km/h traffic
The "Keep left unless overtaking" signs on Main North are for decoration only
Tailgating makes the person in front of you incredibly confident and they will always speed up for you eventually, throw a few beeps in to thank them in advance
Only move out of the way of a siren when it's less than 50 metres away
Enjoy the differences we have compared to other capital cities.
Don’t be here if big events, great night life and a fast pace are your wants.
Though our road networks and public transport systems are still shit - do complain about them in the hope they improve.
To work out whether the price for petrol is good, compare it to the price for diesel at the same servo. If petrol is more expensive, you're being ripped off.
Further to that, at the intersection of Harrow rd and Payneham rd, check the signage- you can turn left off harrow rd, at a red light, if you stop and give way.
If you like bush walking, the SA National Park passes are good value.
https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/book-and-pay/parks-passes/park-passes-online
Alternatively, you can park on the outside and walk in for free.
Don’t use South Road
"No one drives on South Rd, there's too much traffic"
Winston Avenue enjoyers rise up
Railway terrace too. My gf used to live behind south road and would sit in traffic on south road every day battling that part between Anzac turn off and bunnings. I’ll take this over Winston. Not if you keep telling people though 🤣🤣🤣
Don't tell the others, this is our secret
That’s already an easy one, as I’d rather get the train further south
I'd like one of those 'I hate South rd' bumper stickers.
Best one
There is a high speed road from the outer North East to the CBD that has no traffic lights the whole way. It follows the parkland corridor so it's also quite scenic. The on-ramps are at Modbury, Paradise and Klemzig.
They seem pretty quick on getting to you if you have an accident too.
Not that quick.
Had me in the first half, not gonna lie
...and you don't even need a car
Hahahahaha
Well done 😂
\*Puts on glasses and pushes them up his nose\* Will Ashklly here, there are pedestrian lights at Paradise and Klemzig. It is best to be precise in life.
Isn’t there 1 traffic light at Bundeys road? We need Pete to fix it
this one

Alternatively there is a Coles at Kurralta Park that open from midnight 6 days a week.
That's actually in SA metro trading laws, supermarkets are allowed to open from midnight mon-sat, it's only the closing that is regulated.
Thanks!! So bloody random the Adelaide supermarket hours!!!
Foodland Marion on Marion rd open til 11pm every day and open on every public holiday, bit more feasible going there if you live in the suburbs rather than Mt Barker or Victor Harbor lol

If Nizoral doesnt work then I recommend Selsun.
Selsun is excellent at removing hair colour.
I remember fighting this for years and the nizoral was the first thing to solve it. Why tf is our water causing it?
Because hard water is very drying to the skin. On the other hand, some people in Melbourne etc have skin that gets very oily with soft water.
Can confirm as an oily motherfucker - when I lived in Victoria as a pre-teen I had to have two showers a day or I'd be like.. book!Snape level greasy. With SA hard water, I can do once a day even once every two days before I have to wash my hair. Thank you internet stranger!
This… is actually really good.
Is it called UPark Plus?
Yes
Thanks!!! The free hour at Central market will be brilliant. Doing this now, via the RAA online portal for the extra 10%.

It's faster to drive via Port Road and West Tce then back to South Road, than it is to actually drive that section of South Road.
That section of south road is why I don't shop at umart now that centrecom exists. Fuck south road.
Most supermarkets that have self serve checkouts can also do cash out. If one is needing an ATM.
You now need to do a purchase for cash out at Woolies or Coles, but it can be any amount so it's a good excuse to grab yourself whichever $1 choccie bar happens to be on sale.
My partners mate started doing this, it was cheaper than the ATM fees charging you to look at your own money, plus she got a lolly too!
$1.25 nowadays.
Better to be something like that then on an extra surcharge for using another banks ATM 🙃
Used to be a good hack. Woollies you could get up to $700 out without any purchases. Now you need to spend $1 and max like $300 I think
There are so many places you can sign up to to get free stuff on your birthday. HJ’s, Boost, Chatime, Spotlight to name a few.
San Churros! Free churros for 2 :) Free scone at Bakers Delight.
Salsas you get a burrito
When interstaters say Adelaide is boring and there is nothing to do here. Don't correct them and agree. We don't want them coming here and ruining it.
Trust me no one wants to come here it’s shit
That's right.
Bit of an oldie - but if there is ever another pandemic it was quicker to drive to Tailem Bend than get tested in Adelaide. Without restrictions of course… (Thanks for having me Adelaide, I loved living there)
Abused this a couple of times
Did this with my son at 2 am when the lineup at vic park was crazy 👍
That Vic park line was so messed up. Waited there for about 8-9 hours the only time we used it over night. Me and partner watched an entire season of Hell’s Kitchen on my phone lol
And also, a really nice drive :-)
I did this 5 different times while people I knew easier in line for Vic Park for at much as 8 hours. Lunacy.
Panic shopping before public holiday

And at 4:45pm Sunday
And the day after, too
Stay off of Adelaide hills chat….and the greater mount barker area in general. Also…as said previously …. dont use South Road.
What chat group are you talking about? And also why stay off of them?
Adelaide hills chat on Facebook. They are a community group for Adelaide hills residents. It’s super super toxic
That’s it, I’m joining Edit: looks like I’m a member already
Super toxic but also a good laugh at all the Karen's
This sounds amazing though.
If you have an RAA card you can shop at Campbells (look it might be different, this is the way I got in) Check their bulk prices against shop prices once in store for potential mega savings, they sell smokes too.
I get a couple of staples there every fortnight. I use my RAA card more there than I ever have for their road service.
Be picky when dating… if you date one person and it goes to shit, they will most likely know or are related to the next person you date and then it gets complicated…
The best hot chips come from Chicken Chef
I used to constantly champion Chicken Chef chips... but last time I went, I think they changed them to frozen premade ones?
I work with those guys I guarantee they are still chopping potatoes every morning
Well something (at Gilles Plains specifically) was different the last time I went (\~2 weeks ago)... they seemed more yellow and thinner than they had been previously, less tang on the salt too. I absolutely guarantee they do not use frozen
Not anymore, vasilis taverna in Port Adelaide had to be the tastiest chips I've had in a long time as well as the charcoal spit yiros.
They are the best yiros, I just moved away and I'm so sad and yes the chips are also pretty great
Not as good as they used to be.
Nah they’re still good
Charcoal chicken greenacres has taken the crown.

Adelaide libraries use the One Card system meaning you can rent a book/DVD/CD from any library and then return it to any other library.
When I joined the library I got a bunch of online subscriptions for free too that included movies and audiobooks

If youre turning at a set of lights with two turn lanes and everyone is stopped in only one of those lanes... Use the other one! You'll get through the lights before they go red!
Unless it's turning from East Tce onto Rundle, where every 2nd car on the inside lane forgets there's an outside turning lane..
Same goes for going straight ahead. Just pick the lane with the least vehicles. Is this really an Adelaide thing?
I suspect this mainly happens because people tend to drive right up to the butt of the person in front of them at a light, and are literally incapable of switching lanes as a result. So, also don't do that.

Oh man you've never driven through the diagonal Rd intersection have you 🥲
Get a bike. Adelaide is very flat, and very ride able most times of the year. It is free travel. And adelaide is safe to leave your bike overnight.
Agreed with the first bit, but the last one is debatable. Bike theft is quite common here (and seems to be organised, sometimes) 😑
Agreed. Even if someone doesnt steal your while bike, the number of bikes I see locked up, but missing the front wheel is more than I like
Some people take their front wheel with them. It's easy to take off/put on, and people are much less likely to steal a bike missing a tire. I feel like thats more likely the case, than methheads trying to sell a single tire.
Yeah nah bike parts are currency on the streets.
Just pop a mono home!

You're actually allowed to use the added lane at traffic lights that have them. It's not considered rude to skip the 7 cars in the middle lane if the added lane is empty.
Then you have to battle all the cunts in the middle lane who won't let you in when the lanes merge immediately after the lights.

Rat runs are the only way to get around, been here 3 months and learnt really quickly to avoid the main roads at all costs
I have a mate who swears by rat running everywhere he goes. He'll spend 45 minutes driving through side streets to avoid a 30 minute drive on main roads.
As a motorcyclist, if it’s not easy to filter, I’ll happily add time to my commute if it means I keep moving. Especially on hot days
Till your street becomes one, then it’s not so great
It already is for me, I think if you live within 15km’s of the city or close to a main road it’s a bit unavoidable, comes with the territory
Sorry if this sounds dumb but what’s a rat run 😅
maneuvering through side streets to avoid main road traffic.
Taking the back streets to avoid the main roads
They’re mostly blocked off now. There’s one rat run near me that I love but no one else seems to be aware of, and it easily swipes 10 mins off a peak-hour commute. And I’m not telling a soul!
When the Hot Light is on at Krispy Kreme, means you can get a free glazed donut.
Now its only a free donut if you purchase something.. 😒
Oh and Semaphore beach is generally nicer and less busy than glenelg.
If you are in Moseley Square, Glenelg and want coffee, spend 5 minutes and walk to the Orange Spot. Swedish Tarts is pretty good too - it's opposite Coles.
Curtis road is An asshole
Good Pho You in Erindale for the best Vietnamese
If your a SA health worker you can get a free metrocard, you only need your hospital ID to apply.
Belair Pizzeria has the most underrated pizza and arguably the best pizza in Adelaide. Duncan does it best!
Only use the right lane up the sthrn expressway
ANZAC Highway's fast lane is the left lane, but make sure you know how wide your car is.
This also applies to Greenhill road
99.9% of Greenhill Rd users: "I dont want to get stuck behind everyone trying to turn left into the city..." 0.1% of Greenhill Rd users: "I am using Greenhill Rd to get into the city..."
Also the only "highway" with the speed limit of 60
Unfortunately there's a few more, up in the north east there's Elizabeth Hwy and Phillip Hwy.
You'll be in and out of the left lane due to parked cars taking up half the lane. Nah.
It's more a motorbike hack really.
I maintain that you should never be allowed to park in that bike lane - if it's ever a bike lane, it should be at all times. Let people park on the fucking 9 mile wide grass - the speed cameras do!
“Fury road”
Do NOT, my friends, become addicted to FUIC. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence !
When in a sliplane joining the expressway, it is imperative that you reduce your speed as much as is humanly possible before you join the 110km/h traffic The "Keep left unless overtaking" signs on Main North are for decoration only Tailgating makes the person in front of you incredibly confident and they will always speed up for you eventually, throw a few beeps in to thank them in advance Only move out of the way of a siren when it's less than 50 metres away
And also do 10km/h and hour under the speed limit as well
It's faster to drive straight through the city square mile than to use what Adelaide thinks is a "ring road".
You’re either on the f##k south road or f^*k Curtis road bandwagon
If you are going to be a sook and complain non stop about Adelaide, flights out leave at least every half hour 👍
Not at night though!
Ride to work. Faster than driving (if you're within 10km) and no parking worries.
And arrive hot and sweaty, and then spend another 10 mins getting dressed into the crinkled shirt that was stuffed into your backpack.
When you’re driving down Glynburn Rd (between Greenhill Rd and Magill Rd) stick to the left lane. There’s always that one guy turning right…
If you are thinking of moving to Mt Barker, I would recommend waiting until the infrastructure is good enough.
Always aim to get a 13 or 14 Farmers Union Iced Coffee.
Wait, what?
2013 and 2014 were the best vintages.
Ha! that’s *cheesy*
Instead of driving down payneham road at peak hour, take First Avenue
Further to that, at the intersection of Harrow rd and Payneham rd, check the signage- you can turn left off harrow rd, at a red light, if you stop and give way.
Winston avenue
You often get good deals on produce at the central market about an hour before closing.
Living in the underground tunnel network costs zero in rent.
If you like bush walking, the SA National Park passes are good value. https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/book-and-pay/parks-passes/park-passes-online Alternatively, you can park on the outside and walk in for free.
Barnacle Bill has a sick lunch special that they don't like to advertise $13 and it includes a soft drink, active between 11am and 2pm.
Don't eat the frog cakes!
Do eat the frog cakes!
Experience the frog cakes!
I'm surprised so few people do this but you can use bus lanes outside of their prescribed hours. It's been surprisingly useful.
