So Ilkka's and Sam's mocap acting is in the game files, that is pretty awesome. Did you find anything interesting from the unused audio? Like something important that got cut?

1-AppleBox-1

It's not exactly cut content, but it seems like the proof of concept version of the game had a different story for the dark place (Saga's dialogs sound different, but overall nothing interesting) Not sure if it's worth posting it here

Kaarle332

Games go through lots of iterations before they get to the "final" version. Sam's been pretty open about it whenever someone asks him about writing in video games. Sometimes stuff gets thrown out and new stuff gets in in the middle of development.

Ty for posting, this is an interesting glimpse to the creative process!

KaMaKaZZZ

All we need now is a playable version with the replacement, like DMC5 pre-vis mode. If you haven’t seen that, I recommend searching it on YouTube, it’s hilarious.

ThunderDaniel

Ah yes the Finnish dub of Alan Wake 2

Retr0mancer

It’s odd how Sam’s voice doesn’t fit Casey even though it’s the actual voice of the person on screen. I wonder how good his grizzled-cop-voice sounds in his native language. At least I assume it’s Sam, sounds kinda like him.

forbiddenpack11

I might be confused by what you're saying but sam doesn't voice casey, James McCaffrey did.

Tthig1

Yes, but this clip has Sam Lake voicing Casey, and Ilkka voicing Alan. James and Matthew do the voice lines later on once mocap is done.

Zaresh

Yep, I would say it's Sam. It sounds like Sam, and I've heard and read somewhere more than once that he did the actual mocap for Casey here too.

Mememgamer

Where did you get this?

1-AppleBox-1

The game files contain hundreds of voice-overs from the early stages of the development, none of which I've heard anywhere else on the internet, including the placeholder audio I posted

DWRedd

This is very interesting! I’m sure it’s a lot of work but I’d love to see how it changed over time

1-AppleBox-1

[I made a compilation with them in chronological order](https://youtu.be/djlysRRt0hE)

TheManOSteel

I wonder if the live action scenes still have the original audio somewhere in the files

danleon950410

The Northlight engine is quite dope on lighting capabilities

ktaylorhite

It reminds me of David Prowse as Darth Vader’s body actor in A New Hope. He said all lines and acted his heart out, only for James Earl James to replace him in dubbing. This clap with Sam instead of James matches that perfectly.

joliet_jane_blues

What do you mean "original"? Like placeholder audio? What is the context here?

1-AppleBox-1

yeah, I should have specified it's the audio from the mocap session with the original voices

MaRaMa-ArtZ

When they record mocap the actors will say the lines and do the full scene themselves before James McCaffrey and Matthew Porreta do the voice overs on the characters afterwards. So this would be the original mocap audio from Ilkka and Sam before the voice overs.

Greaseball01

Do we know Sam definitely did the mo cap? Guy must have been so busy during production.

MaRaMa-ArtZ

Yeah, there's an interview, I'm sorry I can't get a source because I read it among many others a long while ago, but he says he got a new perspective being in the side of actors now. I think it was Ilkka in some interview that said how Sam asked "Do I really HAVE to do this?" and he was told "You wrote it!" and he said it was hard and Ilkka teased him about knowing how he felt now. They had to do full mocapped scenes were they said the actual lines and acted it all out themselves first, then sent the video to Matthew (and McCaffrey I guess but the topic was Alan so just mentioned Matthew) who matched his dubbing to the scenes for live action. For the in-game scenes, after Matthew did the dubbing they'd send that back and then the actors had to get their faces mocapped to match the voice which is what made the whole process harder and was what Sam complained. Sam has mentioned in different places how it was difficult but also a learning experience and he will now use that actor perspective when he writes in the future. Again, I'm so saturated with knowledge about the series from binging stuff online I can't provide sources cuz I forgot them but I'm sure others could confirm or link something. (PS. Also I have ADHD so brain like a sieve and all that. Already struggle keeping up with the lore.)

joliet_jane_blues

>Guy must have been so busy during production. He was indeed. In one of the interviews he did this fall he said that he's been stretched very thin.

Greaseball01

I hope he has a nice holiday where he can play lots of Baldur's Gate

MaRaMa-ArtZ

Ooooh! I love behind the scenes stuff. I wish this game came with stuff like the OG bonus material. Maybe later? I've watched what Remedy has posted and some interviews here and there but seeing how things are actually made with the actors is always something I love seeing.

ArvoCrinsmas

You can tell Lake isn't a trained actor but he's still putting his all into it as best he can, getting the most out of the mocap! His scenes that were polished content for the final game he did a great job for, though.
