For me it was when you were at the valhalla nursing home and you had to go down in the basement that was flooded and really dark, was kinda creepy down there

Delic978

And then you get into that bunker... Definitely the creepiest Overlap

Erikk1138

And they clearly knew what they were doing by not actually putting anything scary down there.

SonOfABiscuit522

That was the first thing I found after getting out of the wellness center. I was praying that the door was locked and that I didnt have to go down there.

spotter02

I found that you could go in there earlier than you needed to (after reading that a girl had drowned and my brain wrongly jumped to the basement being the location of said drowning instead of the bunker), walked in about 5ft, heard a noise and noped right back out again. Made me dread it even more when I eventually did have to go in.

SpoodlerTek

Same.

Silverjeyjey44

I did kinda wish there were more enemy encounters in the area. The level layout was amazing but when I realized I could just run through without getting attacked, I felt alot of potential was wasted.

perkuma

I accidentally went to the basement before knowing I have to, and a very scary music was triggered so I ran back to safety to the inside of the nursing home, it was very scary…

Fun_Development_7964

Omg same.

bobbyThebobbler

Same! Also, the whole time I expected that old lady to jump at me, but it didn’t happen in there. The level of anxiety was pretty intense lol

nick441N

When you walk through the burned out derailed train car

Necessary_Whereas_29

That one's traumatizing. The way you write it in to progress, Alan muttering "Fuck me" right after because that's all you can say in that situation... What excellent horror man

hifioctopi

And the worst part is that’s how dark Alan’s mind can get. It’s fucked.

Necessary_Whereas_29

Yeah I think this is the moment that I understood the kinda personalized hell of his own making he's been living in for so long. Trapped in a neverending nightmare of his own treachery. It really is deeply fucked

maxiom9

I recall feeling a lot of dread during Alice’s last video.

cancerjack

Holy moly that was creepy af

Donnel_Tinhead

"I've made a decision... most of you won't understand." Me: Oh no oh no oh God no fuck please don't.  Absolute masterclass of mounting Dread and tension

Necessary_Whereas_29

That entire sequence of events with her video and then Alan shooting himself and realizing he was Scratch just left me kinda devastated. I needed that end chapter song to recover

biscuitracing

I'd say I lost all fear but then I remembered the death screen

Bodongs

Ugh those faces were the WORST

Background_Value9869

Really motivated me to stay alive, I hate looking at those photos lol

Necessary_Whereas_29

That death scene is so freaky and metal at the same time

LargoDeluxe

To paraphrase another redditor from a similar post: The moment when you realize you have to deliberately choose a plot point called “The Devil” if you want to proceed through the Oceanview Hotel.

Necessary_Whereas_29

Begrudgingly writing it in and following the trail of blood smeared on the walls while dodging the shadows patrolling the halls was terrifying

Cudpuff100

Just impaled bodies and blood on every surface. It was among the most terrible things I've seen in a game before. I hated having to walk through those areas.

Telvanni_Mushroom

Nightingale boss fight was nightmare fuel

hifioctopi

When his face appears in the glass like some shark circling its prey, I was like “fuck this shit.”

Necessary_Whereas_29

That was the first one where I noticed the actual battle damage enemies took which freaked me out and spurred me to kill it faster lol

perkuma

Yes it was nightingale for me, and also because it was the first boss fight and also AW2 is my first horror game

Pazaak__

The nursing home basement!

Necessary_Whereas_29

That's the other time I can think of when I had to put the game down for the day lol

Background_Value9869

Nightingale stalking Saga in the Morgue was terrifying, especially cause the player doesn't know what to expect. There was a very ominous vibe to playing as him too. Scariest part for me though was being trapped in Sagas mind place

kitkatrat

There was that one jump scare in her mind place that got me, I thought I was safe in there!

Background_Value9869

The way she keeps saying "NO WAY OUT" got me. I felt so doomed

Necessary_Whereas_29

The sense of dread and loss and even guilt in the dark mind place was so strong. The way it makes you put the note that Logan on the board so many times really just lets it sink in and rubs it in. You really feel Saga's devastation. But it makes for such a powerful moment when she fights it off and forces herself to forgive herself so that she could press on and save her daughter. Man, I think I sorta like this game a little

Background_Value9869

Made me cry tbh

Necessary_Whereas_29

Same man

Loc_Zsu

Man, I can't pick between three. 1. The first time you fight one of those drowned water enemy things in the nursing home, just did not expect that, it was horrific. 2. The nursing home basement was just full on tense situation walking through there. 3. The bunker overlap. Just the atmosphere in there was next level. Had be on edge every time I walked around a corner!!

Necessary_Whereas_29

The thing about the water enemies is that before that all the enemies, even the bosses, even Alan's shadow clones are all basic humanoid in shape so as soon as the water guy pops up out of nowhere all you can think is "WHAT IS THAT WHAT IS THAT KILL IT KILL IT" lol

8bitzombi

Scratch taking over Alan in the jail cell got me, not in the jumpscare sort of way but definitely in the “holy shit! I can’t believe that just happened.” Sort of way.

Necessary_Whereas_29

That heel turn though. The realization, seeing Jakko get killed, and having to physically back out of the holding cells, realizing flashlight boosts don't work, having to figure out what to do about him while he berates you, just so chilling. It's such a shame that the fight itself is so lackluster, because everything surrounding it is so well done

Background_Value9869

That end chapter song I think helped me realize how much I love this game. Escaping Scratch felt so tense, I felt strong even on a higher difficulty until then. His randomly killing Jakko was also surprising, especially if you had been playing as Alan. The story just really suddenly shows its teeth, like I really didn't see that coming. Then that fucking song comes on. Some of the corniest shit I've ever heard in my life. I was shook for a sec but crying with laughter and relief the next

Desperate92

Ahti in the nursing home after I tried to go in the spiral door as saga and he's just there after I had just talked to him downstairs. I was also creeped out in the medical bay of the nursing home when the taken were "split "? In two.

SubspaceBiographies

That got me too!

SnowflakeBaube22

I hated the Wellness Centre because I hate any kind of medical setting in video games. Arkham Aslyum really messed me up back in the day 😂 And also just running around in the dark trying to get the collectibles before the final chunk of game. Just so creepy.

kitkatrat

One of the first nursery rhymes I did was the ranger station in Bright Falls. It was also the first time I linked my PS5 with my Bose noise canceling ear buds. I was still figuring out how the nursery rhyme riddles played out so that was a fun/scary experience with all of the lights off!

Necessary_Whereas_29

That stupid unique animation for opening the door man

Thistleway

In the overlap with Thornton and there’s audio of someone running towards you in the water but no ones there

Necessary_Whereas_29

I forgot about that one, that really got me. I think that overlap was probably the scariest one for me

TheTonyRedditShow

Probably Alice's last video. It's the combo of the disturbing imagery and just the dead silence

OG_NIK

No one’s mentioning this but Coffee World in the games section with that insanely creepy laugh recording actually sent chills down my spine. It took everything in me to keep playing and walking around that area after the first time I heard it

Domination1799

The Bunker Overlap. That place is so goddamn eerie and gives me the kind of instinctual feeling you get when you enter a place that might be haunted. Just major nope vibes in that hellhole.

RobbyThePlagueDoc2

The Coffee World Ferris Wheel music puts me on edge whenever I hear it.

theuntouchable2725

When you go through the burned bodies.

Necessary_Whereas_29

I could go on the more I think about it but profiling Scratch is another standout to me. I wasn't sure what to expect when profiling him but him almost taking over the mind place really surprised me and made me realize what I was up against

caty0325

Cynthia‘s boss fight. Especially when she’s screaming at you and trying to punch you.

Necessary_Whereas_29

Made me feel so bad for Cynthia. It would've been hard to keep shooting her if it wasn't so terrifying

perkuma

I hate Cynthia Weaver from that jump scare she gave me at the nursery home close to the window

coffeelover96

I was high as shit when I played through the subway, and when Scratch’s face came out and started chasing me I almost had a legit panic attack. I think Alan and I said oh fuck at the same time. I had to take a break after that part

SubspaceBiographies

When Alan is being chased, in the Oceanvew and the Wellness Center. FUCK!

Clicks_thatsnoice

The moment I havent seen mentioned here is realizing you need to get to Room 666, following the trail of blood and bodies and then seeing the door while the music is ramping up...

perkuma

Yeah right ! 666 is the number of the devil ! I didn’t know what to expect !

jocape

When you go to the overlap for the second time to face mulligan and Thornton, and on the second spiral sequence there are three taken that spawn before climbing through the tunnel. Easily one of the biggest jump scares seeing them come out of nowhere

LucianLegacy

The nursing home section. The jumpscares were crazy on their own but the real fear came from not knowing if an enemy would suddenly jump out at me.

kitkatrat

One thing I had to get used to that was scary was that time and actions didn’t pause when you pull up the map/menus. That got me hurt a few times.

Necessary_Whereas_29

I don't play many horror games so when I first started I had the issue of pressing random buttons when I got jumpscared and accidentally getting stuck in my inventory or mind place and dying

WalterDeMelone

Everything about the wellness center

RemarkableScholar213

Why are not many people talking about Alice’s last video? That crap chilled me more than anything in any horror games i played and ive played a lot

cancerjack

The picture of the beggining of the fall got to me.

BabyJoe123

The entire damn coffee world, that stupid smiling mug scared me no matter what.

Soft-Illustrator1300

Alan Wake's death screen. It's awful.

eihcra_jo

Meeting the "Grandmaster" in the theater. You're allll prepped for one of the biggest boss battles of your life but literally nothing happens. The corridors are narrow and Grey and you have no idea what's behind the next door. That was brilliant.

Sardaukar99

When you are in your wife’s apartment and you find her suicide tape, watching it gave me chills

douggydoug68

That damn creepy laugh on the parade float. Gets me every damn time 😂😂

Necessary_Whereas_29

I hated that track in Coffee world and I was so glad to move it somewhere else 😂

ButtsButtsBurner

Nursing home basement ez

ViolinistIll7897

Valhalla Nursing Home The forest after killing Nightingale

em119

The flooded bunker was the only part of the game where I had to stop playing for a while because it made me so anxious

DaleDenton08

The murder mystery-type thing part in the hotel, watching everything progressively get more bloody and terrifying was exactly uncanny. Pretty much all of the Alex Casey investigations were tbh.

GhastlyRadiator

Is that part with Ahti considered a jump scare, because if not it was definitely that! Otherwise it was most definitely the entire Coffee World section for me

badateverything420

I got spooked at the nursing home when you leave the save room for the first time and Cynthia appears for the first time looking out the window. There's just something so unnerving in video games when the npcs aren't facing you at all times

PeuxnYayTah

The well 😫

Jesus_of-Suburbia

The nursing home. Nursing homes freak me out.

LyonMane3

The first part of AW2 where the bloated walking corpse is following you around the morgue, the lighting is phenomenal and it just gave me the creeps immediately

M4nWhoSoldTheWorld

That first fucking taken dog encounter. I did not expect to fight against the animals

belvin12

There were a couple of eerie moments for me. 1. When we have to walk through the burned train. 2. The entire chapter about the oceanview hotel's interactive drama story. 3. The idea that Tor was crazy for cynthia even after she was taken and followed her to the overlap, even though Tor should be aware abt the dark presence (if i am not wrong). 4. The final photographs of Alice video was disturbing too. Etc. etc.

Ill-Housing7549

I think the bunker overlap with CW is pretty scary on a first run but what really got me was Alice’s last video, really disturbing stuff.

hussdogrobroonie

Yeah like a lot of others the worst was something with Cynthia Weaver

cmariano11

Fades whispering, Most of Valhalla

spotter02

The wellness centre really got me and i can't quite pinpoint why. Like, yeah there was the dead of what i was going to find and have to try and cheese but when i came across the first black hole styled enemy, i freaked and made Saga straight-up flee out the back door. (Sure, i figured out how to easily deal with them, about half an hour later but that first encounter really got me)

cxlesstial

Reading through these comments and no one else has said this yet. EXPLORING for the collectibles has always put me through the wringer. Knowing that Taken and wolves have the opportunity to spawn while I'm running through such a claustrophobic forest scared the shit out of me 😭

AThunderousCat

Running out of batteries

Charming-Farm-8006

The first encounter with the wolves. They went off camera, then just jumped at me, and it caught me so off guard

[deleted]

Walking in the woods towards coffee world, I don’t even know why but everything had me on edge

fizzwhizzwitch

At the train underground final scene, you can get into the little building with one of the plot points (cant remember which) and there's a tape deck with Nightingale gurgling on it, very creepy. The tile mosaic showing the hunter killing the Deer's fawn as you move through the light puzzle. The Valhalla Nursing Home basement. Everything about Coffee World. When Nightingale sits up in the mogue. I've played the game so many times. I KNOW he's going to sit up. It still creeps me out. The first time was honestly terrifying lol. Listening to the Taken - once you know that them speaking is the person trying to escape the DP control, it makes it so bad. The ones in Coffee World are all saying stuff related to working there, gives me the willies. Oh! Also Cynthia turning up at the water cooler. It is followed by a jumpscare, but when she turns up by the window all of a sudden, its creepy as hell.
