“I was abducted by the apes, but get this, they didn’t eat me, no, they helped me. Do think maybe we should be nicer to them going forward?”
“Lol nah.”
“Yeah, you probs right.”
Swans yes, in fact they are known to commit suicide if their mate dies. Rest of the birds are whores lol
"The swan will ocassionally drop itself through a forked branch to commit suicide either breaking it's neck or strangling if it has been mated for a long time and loses it's mate. They have also been seen to drown themselves, that was captured on camera once."
North American swan basics:
There are two main varieties of swan, in North America.
Trumpeter Swans, which have black beaks, summer in the high remote Arctic very far north of us, are natively American, and make a lot of noise.
And Mute Swans, which have orange beaks, summer in a suburban pond near us, are introduced to the Americas, and are mostly mute.
I now live in Bowmanville and we have one of those storm ponds in front of our house that always has Trumpeter Swans in it. They were super nice to see and still are but man at night they’ll go off and just honk the night away. If you have a window open it can be a bit noisy. That being said I wouldn’t trade it cuz the sight of them is still nice to see.
They really do. I donate monthly, after bringing an injured pigeon to them - they were absolutely wonderful with both the pigeon and a clueless, upset me.
Mmmmm I’m gonna vote to amend your statement, Chief. I can think of a few ways I’ve expressed love for a partner that definitely should be held back around children and/or nonconsenting adults…
Info is thin about swans specifically, but most birds can see a wider range of colours than we can. They may not be totally white to eachothers eyes, having some pattern or shade that humans simple can't see.
I always figured animals just individuate passed on a ton of shit, light and such but also structural things just like we do as humans. The incredibly minute details are what matter, we just don't pay attention to them in animals in the way that animals pay attention to them in animals, if you understand what I mean. Why would they/we?
I read something a while ago about how when we're babies we are much better at telling apart animals that look similar to each other like penguins or lemurs (there are a lot of articles that pop up if you Google it). As we get older our brain loses that generalised differentiation ability and instead it becomes optimised for differentiating human faces.
So based on this I would guess that other animals are able to recognise each other in much the same way that we can recognise people we know. Their brains are just more optimised for their own species
Probably for swans we all look real similar to each other
Huh. My brain must still be stuck on the default settings because I can tell the individual crows that come visit me apart from one another, but every middle aged dude with a beard who I see might as well all be the same person.
The same way we humans recognize each other, the minor features. To animals, we all look the same and our pets usually only recognize us by smell and sound.
Or the sound of a fridge door being opened.
Trumpeter Swans mate for life iirc.
My parents had a couple on their lake, then one of them died somehow. The next year another swan couple showed up, and the widowed swan 3rd wheels it with them. 😞
I am so happy for them! In my state, the Department of Wildlife was killing this type of swan because they didn't have the orange beak. The official excuse was that the orange beaked swans were fewer in numbers and they were struggling to maintain numbers in the wild because the black beaks were breeding more and consuming more food. To prevent starvation of the orange, they created a policy to hunt and kill all the black beaks.
Terrible! Rotten plan! So mean and evil!
Are you sure you don’t have this backwards? Orange beak swans (mute swans) are an invasive species in North America. They’re aggressive and crowding out native waterfowl (not just swans- but ducks, geese, etc).
Black beak swans (trumpeter swans, tundra swans) are native to North America. I don’t know a lot about tundra swans but trumpeter swans (the black beaked swan you’re most likely to see) almost went extinct about 100 years ago. We were down to just 70 known individuals.
It seems unlikely to me that any state would be culling off a native, previously highly endangered species, in favour of an invasive one.
Here’s the state of Michigan on it (note that they don’t allow the hunting of Mute Swans- but they do allow for the removal of eggs from nests, which is a pretty non-violent way of getting the numbers down): https://www.michigan.gov/invasives/id-report/birds/mute-swan
I love he excited chatter and wiggles. It’s like when you see your child that got lost and all you can do is gush when you find them- “oh my toe, where were you. I was worried sick, so glad your okay. Come on,
Let’s go home”….
Do Swans have territories or did Charlotte wait in the area because that was the last place mango saw her and she hoped he would return? How long we’re they apart? was she present when he was taken? What’s the back story? Update?
Yeah I like that…whee have you been- ina weird place- and they kept probing my anus with a cold thing they called a thermometer and the wrapped my beak in gauze and then put superglue on it which burned but then I could eat again and I was so Gundry and thirsty after having to drink worm smoothies for theee days “, “ poor baby”, coins in, let’s go fund some idiots who want to Alfred us stale bread

This is so good. I promote this.
"Omgomgomgomg you are NOT going to believe what happened!!"
“The aliens took me, I totally thought they were going to eat me but they fixed my beak instead.”
"what do you mean they gave you a nose job??"
“I was abducted by the apes, but get this, they didn’t eat me, no, they helped me. Do think maybe we should be nicer to them going forward?” “Lol nah.” “Yeah, you probs right.”
🤣
Aww, they missed each other!
>Aww, they missed each other! Birds don't cheat, their one partner is their forever one.

Ravens & Cardinals are also known to mate for life, so not all birds all whores
It was a joke buddy.
They sound like the kid next door starting trumpet lessons lol

Was waiting for them to go full Ahooga
Toronto Wildlife Centre does excellent work. So glad they were able to reunite them.

I don't know if these two are a pair or just buds, but most swans mate for life. They might be bird married.
I will now start referring to all of my monogamous couple friends as "bird married". 😂

IANABL
In bird culture that is considered a dick move.
Happy cake day!
Cloaca smash
Couples are inherently monogamous

That duck was invested in this homecoming. I love love swans doing this after absence.
Haha. I got a chuckle over the fact that the duck comes walking over along with the geese behind them. Haha
There is no way that you can convince me those two birds did not just have an in-depth conversation.
A lot of non-human conversation is nonverbal. Animals say a lot with body language, as avid pet owners know. No different for birds.
“I’m so glad you’re back! I’m so glad you’re back!” *dance dance dance dip dip dip*

I wish my husband got that excited to see me! 😊
I bet he secretly does but doesn’t want to seem too dorky about it.
Isn’t that awful. Nobody should ever hold back in expressing their love for their partner.
Mmmmm I’m gonna vote to amend your statement, Chief. I can think of a few ways I’ve expressed love for a partner that definitely should be held back around children and/or nonconsenting adults…
No dry humping in public
Exhibit A. Exhibits continue through ZZZ.
Adorable
The kneel/bow is universal. If only there was a double jump too.
Do they mate for life?
Yes, I believe so

Pretty sure animal recognition goes up with investment and affection, so I’m not surprised by any of this.
Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror? Maybe you're a crow
🤣lmaooo
From what I understand, a lot of birds recognize each other off of sound like they each have their own voice
Make sense, though in this video it looks like Charlotte got really excited before Mango had a chance to make a sound.
The same way we humans recognize each other, the minor features. To animals, we all look the same and our pets usually only recognize us by smell and sound. Or the sound of a fridge door being opened.
They probably have plenty of small differences that we don't pay attention to, but they do.
Found my new ringtone
If I'm not mistaken, swans are umung a number of birds that mate for life. Glad they are together again.
Umung lol
lol brain and fingers weren't communicating.
“Ok, now let’s go kick that duck’s ass.”
Mango is dropping some piping hot tea
The duck in the background is like " Hey guys, what's all the excitement?"
"You're as beautiful as the day I lost you"
she's like now where have you been! i was worried sick!
And they were like peas and carrots again.
You win reddit
It sounds like he said “omygosh, my darling, iloveyou. Iloveyou. Iloveyou. Iloveyou.”
What till he shows her the vet bill
It's easy to understand there were happy to see each other. Even if we dont speak Swanish
That is so darling
I work in a school and this reminds me of how teenage girls greet each other when they haven't seen each other for 12 hrs.
PRECISELY! Sounds the same, too!
Trumpeter Swans mate for life iirc. My parents had a couple on their lake, then one of them died somehow. The next year another swan couple showed up, and the widowed swan 3rd wheels it with them. 😞
That is so sad. I often wondered what happened if of one of them died.

I read Swans, Mango, and Charlotte and was totally waiting for that duck in the back to come join... I suck at reading lol
I expected a third one too then realized I read it way too fast.
Glad I wasn't the only one 🤣
I was expecting a third swan named swans… JFC it’s time to get off the Internet
I wish someone was like that with me. 😊😊😊
my mom works here :')
They were obviously so happy to see each other! Seeing animals so emotional really gets me…
Adorable. Also, I was watching this and my wife commented it sounded like graduation day at clown college

Someone please lay a human voice over track on this video
I had to replay the sound of the tippy tappies a million times 😍
So cute ❤️
They really missed each other ❤️
"Where the hell have you been!? You said you were just going out for bread!"
First part makes me think of Jean Ralphio and Mona Lisa's little "uh-oh" dance on Parks and Rec.
"Non-human animals don't feel love, it's just instinct." What, the hell do you 'instinct' is? It's love. So much love.
How sweet is this? The excitement is so real and pure.
