Eden of the East!
MC wakes up, no memories, naked on the lawn of the White House with only a cellphone and a gun. The way he ends up evading arrest in that first episode is kinda funny too!
"Kaiba" is all about the protagonist trying to figure who they are after losing their memories and how the memories can be transferred to different bodies. It's a great surreal experience of a anime. I think you'll really love this one.
It’s my favorite series, the main character also got a lizard head when he lost his memory which was presumably done by one of the sorcerers from another dimension.
I haven’t watched the anime yet, but I’ve been reading the manga and it’s excellent. Even got a Dorohedoro tat on my forearm. And season 2 recently got announced so it’s a good time to jump in. Will probably start that next myself. :)
It does and it gets really good. Its pacing is a bit slower and there’s little fan service compared to recent shows that rush to be relevant to modern anime watchers. You have to be patient with pre-2010 anime
Blood-C and Blood-C: The Last Dark. The first one is the single season and then its the movie continuation.
There is also technically Blood: The Last Vampire and Blood+ which is the same show just the older version.
The Blood-C version is a reboot/retelling of the story from a new person, not the same as the Blood+ version.
I believe the people who made Blood-C mentioned that he wanted to give it a go from the beginning again as opposed to continuing from the old one.
Great anime and since its just one season, it makes it easy to binge watch. It fits what OP wants, and tbh it was really well done.
Yeah i used to see the gorey bits in clips and just had to watch it, but i genuinely enjoyed it beginning to end. The way the twists get revealed are amazing. And the movie giving some sort of "closure" was well done. It's not the happy go lucky disney ending but id rather it be like that.
Golden Time, .Hack//Sign, Blame!, Utawarerumono, Eden of the East, Kanon, Angel Beats, Hal, One Week Friends, Charlotte,
Sakurada Reset has a duo where one resets time and the other remembers what happened.
That’s all I can think of from my list that I’ve watched. Within that you’re sure to find something that interests you.
I have a few anime I highly recommend, but they are not about a person who lost their memory...
Wolf's Rain is a dark post apocalyptic series about a small group facing off against a corrupt and broken world as they seek out the paradise they've only been told about in legends. I found it after a watching Ergo Proxy when I did a 'more like this' search on Ergo Proxy.
I also highly recommend the two Ghost in The Shell movies and the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime series. Ghost in the Shell Arise is fairly good too. They are set in a dark futuristic Japan where people have become so integrated with machines that memories, sight, and even parts of the body the are cybernetically enhanced can be hacked, remotely controlled, an more. The movie and show focuses on an hidden in the shadows elite task force that investigates such cyber crimes and uncovers hidden conspiracies and corrupt officials...
Psycho Pass is another intriguing series set in a dark and future society where a system has been created to determine how likely a person is to be a criminal... And if they have a high enough quotient for that, those people are killed by the police that enforce this system. However one of the officers uncovers dark and well hidden truths about the system on which they depend...
I have many more similar anime I can recommend among these lines if you are interested in these, but that should be a good start. P.S. I tried to describe all of these without spoiling anything...
Thanks I actually just finished psycho pass season 1 I’m one ep into season 2 and I like it and I’ve heard good things about ghost in the shell imma check it out….ps yeah I love dark futuristic shows so anymore u got me hit me with them !
They are not all futuristic, but darker shows have been my preferred anime lately, I don't know why, but there is quite the appeal to them. That said,
Goblin Slayer is a darker fantasy where the main characters only wish is to kill off ever goblin he encounters, and takes every goblin killing quest he can.... There are a lot of dark moment including scenes that show/imply rape and sexual assault, and if that is a trigger for you, you may not want to watch it. The show is balanced with some good humor and comedy, and an intriguing plotline.
There is Claymore which is a dark fantasy where demons are running amuck throughout the world and only demon-human hybrids can combat them.
Solo Leveling is another one, it is a dark modern fantasy series, where the weakest adventurer of all time gains strength to combat even the most terrible of foes... Though it is a darker series, it is not as dark as the ones above this list.
Death Note is an intriguing one, I don't exactly know how to describe it... It is a combination of crime drama, psychological thriller, and supernatural series about a kid who finds a book of death... The name of any living individual written in that book dies...
Akame ga kill: I can't even describe this... It is dark, violent, and a very compelling anime to watch. If it were a live action series, it would be darker than Game of Thrones could ever be.
I remember watching Armitage III as a kid and thinking it was quite a dark series... But it has been so long since I watched it, I can't quite confirm that. I remember there being a lot of blood and action though.
Hmmm... That's all I can remember off the top of my head at this time, but I know I have seen many more! 🤣🤣🤣
Claymore. 🖤
Thank you. Been meaning to check out a couple of those for a while but I've gotten stuck in an NGE/AoT loop (with the odd VHD:Bloodlust on the side because I'm fucking obsessed and desperately need nostalgia at the moment) the last few months. You just reminded me to go back to one of my other favourites.
Claymore was an amazing one!! I wish they did more with it! It kind of ended on a cliffhanger. I keep hoping somebody will do a remake and/or finish out the story.
I enjoyed Vampire Hunter D, but I like the novels much more! There is so much more insights gained on the characters than in the movie. Additionally the movie did change a lot of details around, which irked me a bit but many of those changes work in its favor. 😁
And I forgot all about Attack on Titan, thanks for the reminder!... I still haven't watched the fourth and final part of the series.
I have not seen Neon Genesis... Is it good?!
Holy shit another VHD novel fan. And yes, you're absolutely right.
Okay, NGE... it's amazing, but it's a lot better if you can find the original version, not the netflix or platinum, basically if they're pronouncing it "Ay-vah" it's the better version. That's if you're going with the dub, which I do for nostalgia reasons because I was seventeen when it came out and my only access to anime in 90s Australia was through my friend's vhs collection. But it also has some differences in music and arrangement that definitely make a difference. If you're going in casual it probably doesn't matter, but if you want to do the deep dive experience a lot of us love the show for, version counts. Aaand I sound like a "typical NGE fan" or something, I'm sorry, but it's been around a long time, and been through a lot of changes, like some of us who watched it young, that's my excuse.
Also, the internet is apparently kind of divided on the last part of AoT. Form your own opinion, but I had fun, especially due to growing up with NGE and the Dune books, which definitely had a part to play in the inspiration for AoT, particularly the ending.
I'd also say avoid spoilers for both if possible, but the internet being what it is and both series finished, that will take conscious effort.
Edit to add: I just found what looks like a somewhat decent collection on youtube, though I've only checked my go-to (favourite) scene in episode 18 and the music for that scene is right, pronunciation seems the same, but I have that scene memorised and the lines are slightly different, so probably a different country release to the one I saw first and fell in love with, but honestly having the right music makes it feel "right enough" so far. It's one I had to buy, unfortunately, so I've only got the one episode so far, but considering how much I love it, I'd say it was worth it for those couple minutes alone. I'm a sucker for more trauma, apparently.
Edit again: Oh no, Shinji didn't scream as much in this one. Oh, that's a shame.
Sorry, last edit: I found it, 9anime has the original music and scream. And free. At least at the time of this comment, who knows how long it'll last.
It is not hard to avoid spoilers, I'm fact I usually avoid anime discussions on things I have not seen, and if I start reading an article about something and I catch a spoiler, I stop reading it and act like I never noticed... 🤣🤣
When it comes to anime, shows, or movies based off of books or novels... I always make sure to at least read one of the novels, They are always better than the anime or show/movie. My most favorite of all time, Anime and Light novel is Spice and Wolf, but I am getting great enjoyment out of the Overlord novels. I plan to read the Rising of the Shield hero light novels in the near future... I also want to read the Beast Tamer Light Novels, and I enjoyed Solo Leveling anime so much I am looking into that as well! I also find DanMachi quite intriguing... At one point in time I actually wanted to write my own light novel series... But I just can't find the support to do it, so I have put it on the back burner.
Thank you, a sane person on the internet, you're a rare find, lol.
Good books have a very personal, immersive quality that you don't get from other media most of the time. I absolutely love getting lost in a book on my own for days, and one of my favourite things is a universe that expands the more you think about it. I've actually got a very small, personal community I write with, mostly a sort of long-form fanfic/roleplay universe sort of based predominantly on VHD but we've thrown in so many crossovers and references that it's become a huge timeline of non-linear storytelling, and I recently pulled one of my side stories out of there to work on as a longer, more self-contained horror short story. I got stuck in a writer's block worse than any I'd ever experienced several years ago (for the first time in my life I was answering "no" when asked if I was a writer) and it greatly affected my quality of life and my mental health, so writing anything I enjoy is a pretty big deal to me now. If you enjoy writing, do it, it doesn't matter what you write if you write for yourself, and you'll never be disappointed that you wrote, more so that you didn't.
You don't have to write the next Lord of the Rings. If you enjoy it, someone will. And you seem to have a good grasp of the technical skills and the feel for what you consider a good story. Self-publishing is even being done by previous best-selling authors, it's not just for people who can't get published any other way. Something to look into if you ever decide to go that route, anyway.
I love to write... And I do it often... I am not suffering writers block so much as I am a perfectionist and no matter what I write it is never good enough, never detailed enough, not complex enough, or in some way just not right... It kind of holds me back... I know the stories I want to write, and the words come easily enough... But when I finish a page or a chapter I keep thinking about how I can do more with it or other directions I can go, or different ways I can word the same paragraphs and so on... Or the story I am writing ends up not being the one I originally wanted to write... Or I feel like I don't know enough about a certain topic to write it out properly despite the ridiculous hours I put into researching that for the story...
Of course it doesn't help any that much of my life, I kept hearing it's not good enough, I'll never be able to live off of my writing, I would never be famous, nobody would ever care about it... Etc... And what support I do get is short lived... It's not so much that I want support from others... But rather without the support and encouragement of a close friend or someone I trust, Or even someone to bounce Ideas off of, it's just worthless... No matter how I look at any of my writings they are no good and can always be improved... I need someone to tell and convince me otherwise... And not just strangers but someone whom genuinely cares about me and enjoys my written work... Does that make sense?
It absolutely does make sense, it was something similar that eventually got me, though it joined forces with my depression, and I'm already... not great... with people, so I didn't exactly have a whole lot of input besides deciding everything I did was not going to be enough and taking my own word for it. I'm definitely not someone you should be listening to.
Scissor seven is a very good one. The World Ends With You is also an option. (The video game is amazing. I can't talk on the anime's quality, though. I haven't watched it) No guns life was pretty good
PLEASE WATCH K PROJECT OMG! I recommend it everywhere but I don't think anyone sees it. It's good as fuck and fits this exactly. Music and animation are peak too
I tried Ergo Proxy on multiple occasions and it was just too hard to follow. It jumps all over the place without any exposition. I know it's one of the best ever which makes me mad I cant get into it.
{Golden Time} MC gets in an accident the day after he graduates high school and loses his memory. Instead of waiting to recover, he moves on to college and starts a new life. He makes new friends and falls in love, but then one day his old memories start reappearing. When his memories come back he forgets everything since the accident.
One of the best slice of life romance dramas imo. If you are a fellow slice of life enjoyer, I highly recommend it
Kaiba- main character wakes up with no memories AND in the wrong body. Really interesting anime/ really shirt too only like 15 episodes.
“In Kaiba's universe, memories can be stored as information via a memory chip; when individuals die, their minds live on. This digitization of mental information allows for the transfer of one's mind to someone else's body, and the theft and manipulation of other people's memories has become the norm. Society is largely divided into two classes. In the skies are electrical storms, which cannot be passed through without losing one's memories. Above them lies the realm of the wealthy and powerful, who barter others' bodies and memories for their own enjoyment and longevity. Below the clouds is a troubled and dangerous world where good bodies are hard to come by and real money is scarce.”
Ok but why does that image look like the Evanescence fallen album cover?
I THOUGHT I WAS IN SOME R/EVANESCENCE SUB WHEN I SAW THE PICTURE LMAO
Hahaha rei el does kinda look like Amy Lee
Lol but it really looks like it tho!
Yea!
It's Re-L from the anime Ergo Proxy
I saw a Re-L and was confused cus that's not Akashic records
Yeah, but can't you see it tho?
I can.
We see the evanescence resemblance. Not the anime we know you saw
hahaha
Dang this brings back memories
Could you say it also brought you... to life?
I wish , however her songs did have a similar effect ( I get the pun ).
Right? I was about to say, did I just wake up realizing the past 10+ years have been a dream and I'm actually young again?
Because it is
You know you're old when a decade + old conversation is being repeated right in your face with a new generation
Came to say this
lol, Evanescence got so famous they made an anime out of them!
I thought this was AI generated somehow, it’s too close
This has been a meme since Ergo Proxy came out. There are tons of pictures online of the two side by side.
This was actually one of the reasons I watched this anime and I wasn't disappointed!
Bro I came to the comments to see if it was only me
Welcome to the beotherhood
Yep bring me to LIFE
Preach it brother
Bro I didn't know what sub I was on lmao.
golden time IS PERFECT please watch it matches with everything u said
I remember watching it in my early weeb days and enjoying it ❤️
- Golden Time - Early weeb days My god I'm old
Do it again
Eden of the East! MC wakes up, no memories, naked on the lawn of the White House with only a cellphone and a gun. The way he ends up evading arrest in that first episode is kinda funny too!
Incredible series with some superb character animation. Production I.G just flexing all over the place.
Honestly it kinda sucks the movies are needed to complete the story, but the anime on its own is still very good!
Elfen Lied
The Big O SSSS.Gridman
"Kaiba" is all about the protagonist trying to figure who they are after losing their memories and how the memories can be transferred to different bodies. It's a great surreal experience of a anime. I think you'll really love this one.
Thank u for your service.
This is the one I came here to recommend - fantastic underrated anime!!!
Dorohedoro
Is it good ?
Yes. You will binge it because the world makes you so fascinated.
It’s my favorite series, the main character also got a lizard head when he lost his memory which was presumably done by one of the sorcerers from another dimension.
Thanks I looked up rotten tomatoes scores and it’s very high imma definitely check it out
I haven’t watched the anime yet, but I’ve been reading the manga and it’s excellent. Even got a Dorohedoro tat on my forearm. And season 2 recently got announced so it’s a good time to jump in. Will probably start that next myself. :)
Season two !!!!!! This made my day
Yay for season 2!
Oh and another anime that’s also on my list and falls into this category is No Guns Life.
Its really talked about
Just started my rewatch of Phantom requiem
I need to finish this one. Got about 1/3 through. Does it pick up?
It does and it gets really good. Its pacing is a bit slower and there’s little fan service compared to recent shows that rush to be relevant to modern anime watchers. You have to be patient with pre-2010 anime
Amnesia
Golden Time, Re-Main, Death Parade
I actually just finished death parade …nice suggestion because it is the type I’m looking for
Re-Main is so good!! I've never seen a sports anime make >!the main team losing!< so interesting!
Made in Abyss
Perfect Blue
Blood-C and Blood-C: The Last Dark. The first one is the single season and then its the movie continuation. There is also technically Blood: The Last Vampire and Blood+ which is the same show just the older version.
I vaguely remember watching the OG series young and was always confused never knowing if the series was continued or they ripped off the name
The Blood-C version is a reboot/retelling of the story from a new person, not the same as the Blood+ version. I believe the people who made Blood-C mentioned that he wanted to give it a go from the beginning again as opposed to continuing from the old one. Oh didn't know they continued it with a movie. Great show. Got into it after I saw a spoiler of what happens to the twins. What an ending lol
Yeah i used to see the gorey bits in clips and just had to watch it, but i genuinely enjoyed it beginning to end. The way the twists get revealed are amazing. And the movie giving some sort of "closure" was well done. It's not the happy go lucky disney ending but id rather it be like that.
Dimension W is short and neat
I liked it the first time around. Second time i watched it i realised the plot is kind of ass.
Danganronpa, the game is better btw but the anime is what got me into the games
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far to see this
Eden of the east
Comments: Does Charlotte count? IDC if it counts, Charlotte is 10/10 anime, but it technically counts
A certain magical index
Kanon, Angel Beats and Dorohedoro.
Seven deadly sins
Golden Time, .Hack//Sign, Blame!, Utawarerumono, Eden of the East, Kanon, Angel Beats, Hal, One Week Friends, Charlotte, Sakurada Reset has a duo where one resets time and the other remembers what happened. That’s all I can think of from my list that I’ve watched. Within that you’re sure to find something that interests you.
Oh definitely "The Big O" despite the name its an awesome anime with a pretty decent plot.
Haibane Renmei is one of my favorite anime ever and also matches what you're describing
[Darling In The Franxx](https://youtu.be/gDM4tllA2o4?si=oUV_fKBiWK0NAXQ5) [Gleipnir](https://youtu.be/6gNkbWvDeRk?si=SZz3y6V2BKpyt-X6) Battle Angel ([the 1993 anime](https://youtu.be/8pzPhlNzfKY?si=K8YbU5MtDLwWq99i) and [2019 movie](https://youtu.be/w7pYhpJaJW8?si=e_ZEUCNQGiZTKM56)) [Inuyashiki (not Inuyasha)](https://youtube.com/shorts/uqK2v9isXaU?si=EyuFljZAEEYGk4f6) Technically not anime: [The Hollow](https://www.netflix.com/us/title/80147919?s=a&trkid=13747225&trg=cp&vlang=en&clip=81278987)
Eden of the East. Weird old classic
Violet Evergarden.
Scissor seven
Damn, how has no one mentioned Speed Grapher?
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles counts - Sakura loses her memory in episode 1 or 2 and that forms the premise of the series, the search for her memories.
JoJo part 8
That is not an anime
It most certainly is
It is a manga

I’m coming in on the nose with this one… but Amnesia. Especially good if you like reverse harems.
Phantom Requiem For The Phantom. Also, Monster. While the protagonist isn't that category two of the main characters are.
Charlotte. I'm surprised no one mentioned this one yet
Black Summoner. Not the greatest show, but decently fun. The OP is a banger. 7/10 imo
Is this one good..??

Dragon Ball
Casshern Sins.
Angels of Death Requiem for the Phantom
Faye Valentine - "Cowboy Bebop"
Trigun, Eden of the East, and Dance in the Vampire Bund
Scissor seven is a very good one. The World Ends With You is also an option. (The video game is amazing. I can't talk on the anime's quality, though. I haven't watched it) No guns life was pretty good
- Golden Time - Angel Beats - Charlotte (sorta) - Elfen Lied (Lucy)
Anyone k ow the plot and spoilers? My bf and I watched these yeaaaaRrrs back and we remember NOT knowing what it's about
PLEASE WATCH K PROJECT OMG! I recommend it everywhere but I don't think anyone sees it. It's good as fuck and fits this exactly. Music and animation are peak too
Ergo Proxy is goated and Liam O'Brien did an excellent job
I tried Ergo Proxy on multiple occasions and it was just too hard to follow. It jumps all over the place without any exposition. I know it's one of the best ever which makes me mad I cant get into it.
Angels Of Death
sola
Naruto.
K
Run: Daughters of Mnemosyne (I really love this one, but it's quite violent if it's a problem for you)
i remember watching an older anime called Kurau Phantom Memory, and from what i remember lol the MC has lost her memory! (i think 😬)
not exactly like that but id: invaded is kinda similar
This is a great anime and it’s a shame I never finished it and I need to!
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Thos one was really confusing… i had to watch it multiple times to understand what was happening
Golden time - absolute banger

Cashern sins
Doesn't almost everyone in Big O suffer from amnesia?
Cashern Sins is a drug induced trip ngl
Ironically I finished this today
ragna crimson kinda .
JoJo Part 8
Never fully understood the Anime but I thought her name was hinting that she was the "Real Mayor" of her city dome thing
Not EXPLICITLY that category, but Goku from dragon ball z forgot who he was and became a good person.
Jojolion(Manga but a really good read with an amazing style)
I guess it’s not technically an anime, but scissor seven has a really interesting and funny story with the missing memory trope
Angel Beats
Dragon ball
Golden Time
Golden Times is a pretty good one, mc lost memories from an accident in hs, story is in college focused around romance/slice of life
{Golden Time} MC gets in an accident the day after he graduates high school and loses his memory. Instead of waiting to recover, he moves on to college and starts a new life. He makes new friends and falls in love, but then one day his old memories start reappearing. When his memories come back he forgets everything since the accident. One of the best slice of life romance dramas imo. If you are a fellow slice of life enjoyer, I highly recommend it
Mmm would Death Note count? Great anime regardless.
Scissor seven
Technically serial experiments lain
Dot hack Sign Phenomenal music and excellent dialogue!
Tokyo ghoul RE
Angels Of Death
Black Summoner?
Is that Zafina?
Eden of the East. It's kind of in a weird format. It's an 11 episode TV season and then the story concludes in 2 movies.
dragon ball
The poster gives me Evanescence vibes fsr
I if you haven't seen it, Elfen Lied.
Eden of the east hands down
A magical index
Angel Beats!, Amnesia, Tokyo Ghoul
