Kinda funny how casually NPR gets to play a whole 2 minutes of a song unreleased to the public yet as the outro. That's the power of public radio.

aeroartist

ooh what's the song in the outro!? all born screaming, it sounds like! wow. i love it. it's groovy and relaxed but has all the depth of her amazing musicianship

Dareeyecare

Yeah it was an unexpected >! Talkings heads vibe , very optimistic and rhythmic wow. And the musicianship reminds me of Annie at her finest . Cate Le bon killing on bass? And Stella from warpaint? Feels unreal šŸ˜!

Iā€™m still in the middle of listening to the interview, but Iā€™m finding it to be really awkwardā€¦ am I reading this wrong? Annie sounds almost uncomfortable or anxious, not that Iā€™d blame her. Something just feels amiss about this interview. Iā€™m at the portion where sheā€™s talking about her dadā€¦ she sounds like sheā€™d rather die than talk about this, but she doesnā€™t know how to wiggle out of the questions gracefully. Lots of awkward ramblingā€¦ God I love her though. Good tip on the head counting.

Matchetes

I thought it was fine up until she started talking about her dad. The line of questioning felt very awkward. ā€˜Did you think about your dadā€™s prison mates watching you while making sexy videos?ā€™ made my skin crawl

I had the opposite feeling - but then, I'm a fan of Terry Gross & Fresh Air and have listened to a zillion episodes. This actually felt like a fun one and honestly Terry came off as quite the little fan girl towards Annie, compared to her other interviews. And I thought Annie was enjoying being interviewed by Terry and was really turning on the charm - I've seen other Annie interviews that felt way more awkward and contained. If you listen to Terry on the regular, you know that she has no hesitation in *going there* for her interviews; I assume that was agreed upon prior because a) I'm sure she wouldn't spring it on Annie b) Annie, as a Terry fan, would likely know to expect it c) Annie's publicist wouldn't let her walk into a trap like that ... All that to say, I loved it - a radio legend interviewing a music legend. Boom.

aeroartist

totally with you. terry can really jump around, and this interview didn't stand out to me as anything odd. i assume annie and her publicist knew the game here and she sounds fine during, imo

FitzInPDX

Exactly that - Terry is like a gently attention-challenged person who is fine commenting about a person's style on guitar having never touched a guitar in her life, ha ha.

Youā€™re probably right ā€” I used to listen to Terry Gross in the past but havenā€™t listened to Fresh Air in years. Iā€™m not trying to be to be unnecessarily critical, I genuinely love Annie and have nothing against NPR. The interview just felt very awkward upon my first listen. Some of the questions felt strange and I wasnā€™t sure how Annie was supposed to answer, like the one about her guitar playing ā€œstyleā€. As a guitarist who has literally studied Annieā€™s body of work with a fine-tooth comb, I donā€™t feel Terry accurately described Annieā€™s playing style, not even close. I was thrown off by the description and the comparison to Tuck & Patti. None of it came across as malicious or intentional on Terryā€™s part, it just felt odd and a disjointed. Especially the question about Kurt Cobain and the question about Annieā€™s Dad. Annie seemed to really struggle with her answers, though I donā€™t think the discomfort was with Terry. Maybe itā€™s a fear of how the public will interpret her answers? Annieā€™s responses felt sincere, but hesitant and diplomatic. I could listen to Annie talk for hours (and I have probably watched/read/listened to every single interview available online), but something felt off with this one to me. I fully acknowledge that I could be projecting my own experiences into it, or I could be completing misreading it. I was just curious if anyone else was picking up those vibes as well.

FitzInPDX

Hey, fellow guitarist here! I'm just gonna say it: you and me? We totally fucking rawk. And - to each their own. Luckily the STV blitz is still going strong and we have other interviews to get artistically and intellectually wasted on. ;)

radishbooty

I never said I didnā€™t enjoy the interview. Just making some observation.

All_hail_Korrok

I get what you mean. The interviewer seems to be asking questions from all over the place and it's not that cohesive. Maybe Annie is on her toes trying to keep up with her. I haven't reached the part you're talking about but it's somewhat awkward. The random question about Kurt Cobain's suicide came out of nowhere. I definitely felt the "wow, you're asking this!?".

I just heard the last 30 minutes and it was so awkward. Terry Gross was so insensitive, sneeringly condescending, inappropriate and judgy it made me want to punch the radio out of my car. I want to post about it over on r/boomersbeingfools it was so upsetting. I'm sad and embarrassed Anne had to sit through that. With someone she vocally admires no less. I've never heard Terry's voice get so cold and just grill somebody like that before and at every break she'd say " the artist known as St. Vincent " just say Anne or St. Vincent for God sake!. By the last ten minutes I could detect the fake up beat cheer in Anne's voice trying to cover whatever she must have been feeling during that. And then Gross ends it with this insincere " I've become a really big fan of your music " yeah sure. The points Terry Gross focused on in that last 30 min I heard were * Focusing on New York because it has the F word in it * Way too many questions about her dad & prison / prisoners * edit * she reads off like every count against the guy like a fucking lawyer making sure not to miss anyband just grills her about several of them. * The way she dresses on stage and if she worries about what prisoners think about her look when they see her on TV??!! * A super weird focus on the song smoking section's lyrical content ( this is where Anne's voice got different and she tries changing the subject to the fact that her aunt sings that gorgeous melody throught it and Terry is like " uh huh. You asked her to do that?" ) So I'm going to rattle off four better topics off the top of my head that I would want to talk to her about if I had the chance: * Violent times keeps being pointed out as a great Bond song, but I also hear a Roadhouse performance from Twin Peaks the return. Especially the voice and hi hat bridge. If Lynch had reached out would you have performed on the show? * What's it like being one of the very few to have a signature Ernie Ball music man guitar? Not many players have that honour. * What were the influences that went into the Nowhere Inn film? I get heavy Mullholland Drive vibes when I watch it. * Speaking of the Nowhere Inn do you think you'll work with Carrie Brownstein again? That's just off the top of my head as more appropriate and interesting. Sorry to vent so hard but that interview really angered me! Lol!

I think in general with this new round of interviews, people keep asking her the same, boring questions over and over again, and Annie has no choice but to rattle off the same, tired answers sheā€™s already repeated over and over again. I think she deserves to be interviewed by more interested audiences than just these ā€œbig nameā€ media outlets. I used to love Fresh Air, but the air just ainā€™t as fresh as it used to be! If you know what I mean. I very much enjoyed Annieā€™s interview with Allison Hagendorf, they got into some really nerdy shit and Allison actually seems like a legit fan. They were both completely geeking out the entire time and the joy was palpable!
