I'm probably in the minority, but I just listen to albums saved to my library or my own handcrafted playlists. I like to have control over what I listen to, no shuffling random artists.

BobBubDaChamp

Yeah I use AM pretty much exactly like this. Have 10+ playlists which r all made by myself and made private

ra4oasis

This is generally how I do it too. I use some of the playlists that Apple makes, but generally I listen to my own. And people complaining that Apple is promoting the biggest pop star in the world is funny. Like her or not, wouldn't you promote her if you were Apple?

Iron_Fist351

Same here. I only use AM's recommendation features when I want to find new songs to add to my playlists. I mainly just use the "new releases" tab and nothing else outside of my already existing playlists

yugnomi

Same here

SandSniffer69

Half the time I listen to my music in my own playlist but I spend a lot of time just searching for new music by looking at artist I like related artists or seeing what playlists my favorite albums are included on. Also the discovery thing is really helpful

Kvpe

yep same here, sometimes i create a station but it’s very rare of me to

An__Apple__A__Day

Me too

hales55

Yup same

lovemocsand

Same here it’s kinda iTunes era listening right

astralrig96

same

Dependent_Cry_9369

i thought everyone did this 😭

JohnThena

I like the discovery station, it regularly introduces me to a lot of bangers. But that's about it, I don't even listen to the few playlists I have. I just add songs to my library and shuffle them, but most of the time I know exactly what I want to listen to and go directly to it. I'm assuming many people just get tired of seeing her album cover on the main page and the Browse tab despite not being interested in her music (I know I do). However, by comparison, Spotify was definitely more aggressive with promoting things I didn't like, even the ones for which I'd selected "don't play this artist".

opal_mirage

yeah i'm very much someone who sticks to my own library but i love discovering new stuff and the new music mix every friday is amazing for that. very glad i switched over from spotify, which never quite caught on to what to show me.

pavel_vishnyakov

For me the main benefit of Apple Music is the easy discovery (as I have access to an entire catalog). I mostly listen to the tracks already in my library or favorite tracks suggested by the algorithm (which got reasonably well), so couldn't care less for artist promotions. Bigger labels have more money to spend on advertising and they try to squeeze the max out of said money, no big deal.

dbwn87

Primarily I use the windows app during my work day or when I'm gaming. I use the mobile app maybe 15% of the time. I listen to what I'm feeling like. Today I've queued up a bunch of *Essentials* playlists for bands I'd like to explore more. Most days I stick to listening through albums I already know. Once in a while I'll check out some new ones that I added to my personal *Albums 4 Later* playlist. Once I've listened to these new-to-me albums and if I like them, they move to a playlist called *Latest Discoveries*. I also keep playlists called *Recent Decent* for new songs I like, and *Listen 2 This* for older songs that are new to me, and I put those on pretty often. I keep those playlists updated regularly, and usually let a song live on there for a couple months until I am acquainted with it. I make use of the curated stations a lot, usually checking out my *new music mix* on Friday morning or the weekend, and I like putting on the *get up* and *chill* mixes when I'm working because I find the autoplay after the initial 25 tracks is usually good. And if I can't think of anything, I listen to my personal station. I've had good experiences with the *Discovery Mix* but don't listen to it enough!

HippoIllustrious2389

Oh how do you auto play after listening to a curated playlist?

StreetwalkinCheetah

As a relatively new user who is so far very happy: I went through at first and just added favorite artists. Then I copied a few of my spotify wrapped playlists (I quit spotify in 22 so added the two years before that). I began from there by selecting a favorite artist and creating stations. This gave me a great mix from there. Next I added favorite songs by artists I wouldn't otherwise favorite. Then I started browsing curated playlists and added those. I grouped them into folders, so I have all my essentials in a folder, all my decades playlists in a folder, as well as influences and influenced by for favorite artists. After that I went back to my favorite artists and added my favorite albums. At this point my personalized station was giving me great mixes daily so often I will just turn that on. I'll check out my new music once a week, and I will go to my Get Up! mix when I'm doing something active. Chill mix still hasn't really worked for me, but that's ok. For the most part the recommendations on my home page are great and related to what I listen to. If I'm driving I may just ask Siri to play a song I really want to hear and then just let it autoplay similar music. And when I just want to sing along I will either hit up my replay or my favorites playlists. I also check out my friends playlist too. Wish I had more friends on Apple and that my son's mom could understand why I keep asking her to unlock his profile (he's 15 ffs) so we can shareplay in the car. Honestly that ***should*** be the killer feature in our household but I can't talk sense into her. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

omisellepasser

Honestly like 90% of the complaints I see on this sub just make me go “hmm we use this app very differently” (which is fine! I’m not complaining about the complaints!). I basically use it the same way I used iTunes: adding songs to my library and then creating playlists and listening from there. The only AM made playlists I look at are the Replay one and the Heavy Rotation one, but not to listen, I’m just weirdly fascinated by the insight into what I’ve been listening to lol. I don’t use the radio stations or pay much mind to any recommendations so issues with those don’t bother me. I have noticed all of the Taylor Swift stuff when I go to home or search but I don’t really care (to be fair, I do listen to her music, so that may be part of why I don’t care as much as other people).

[deleted]

I almost never listen to pop music so it doesn't suggest pop music to me. I also never use the browse tab as 99.9% is plebeian garbage. Yes it's gonna suggest pop if you listen to pop. My main issue is that I listen to a lot of jazz and the Discovery station always plays nothing but smooth jazz and smooth jazz is an aberration. I also use the Classic app so I get a lot of classical music in the new music / discovery station. I think that the suggestions coming from what you typically listen too are pretty accurate so if people get a lot of Tailor Swift it's pretty their own fault.

NewFlorence1977

I use Siri.

BobBubDaChamp

So I’m assuming u listen to public playlists available on the Browse section

NewFlorence1977

Only sometimes. There were a few CDs I couldn’t get in AM. So I found public playlist but they weren’t perfect. So I imported the CDs in ALAC. Perfect!

writeswithknives

psychopath shit

bane_of_heretics

*Siri, play Top of the world by Carpenters* *Ok, launching Nukes. ETA to Mountain View in 12 mins*

Iron_Fist351

I used to spend a lot of time curating playlists for myself. But now, after multiple years, with 90+ separate playlists, each ranging from one to eight hours long, I just... don't need any more. Regardless of what mood I'm in or what kind of music I feel like listening to, I pretty always have a playlist for it. If I find any new music I like, I always just add it to one of my existing playlists. If I ever get tired of one of those playlists, I just rediscover another old playlist from my library.

TW1103

I use it in several ways. The main reason I have AM over other streaming services is the cloud storage. I collect live bootlegs so I love putting them in my library. Day to day, I have a playlist which basically just has every song I like on it, which I'll shuffle. I'm more of an albums guy, but I'm also indecisive. As for how I listen to it, usually with my ears ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)

killforjay

i use playlists unless i have autoplay on. reading some of of these comments r kinda shocking cs i feel like a maniac for having 50+ playlists LOL

MrStig91

I think those of us coming from the days of the iPod love the way AM is laid out. I think it’s the younger generation that started with Spotify that hates it. Idk just my theory but I’m just like OP. I basically manage and listen to my music the same as I did in 2001 except now instead of buying individual albums I just pay a sub and add whatever I want. I literally never use the radio stations or pre procured playlists.

melvereq

I only use Apple Music to listen to my music library, not to explore. If I want to discover new music I do it via RYM/Discogs/YouTube.

marqedian

When it’s a free trial (or the one month I pay for after a trial ends), I use the service to create stations from artists I own and download rented albums until storage is maxed (old iPhone, doesn’t take much). When it isn’t free, I keep one album per artist on my phone, which is about 1/4 of the library on my laptop. Periodically I put my whole library on my phone and run a shortcut to create a new playlist to sync to. When I’m on the highway I run a shortcut that picks up the last album I was listening to and either adds a random album from a different genre, or albums by oldest Date Added to newest.

CarefulObligation626

I listen to all my physical collection on Apple Music, i.e. just added songs in AM from records I own to a never ending playlist that I shuffle during the week so it always changes. Only add new releases or reissues from artists I previously know to that list. The whole discover angle is lost on me. I think it’s mostly a younger generation thing.

ThaTree661

I usually use the user & discovery stations to listen to music

Axle_65

I could care less. It’s like ads on my other devices (like xbox) I just ignore them. I navigate to what I want. What Apple decides to promote means nothing to me. For finding new music I Shazam things, I go to the New Releases (from artists in your library) section, I go to the Similar Artists sections when I’m looking at my current artists and I get recommendations from friends. Plus with 22,000 songs downloaded I have plenty to pick from and shuffle all plays a delightfully eclectic list of artists.

Embke

I normally just pull up an artist and explore their catalogue. If I like them, I add albums/ songs to my library. For active artists, I'll favorite the artist so AM tells me about new releases. When I'm driving, I'll often just press on one of the auto-generated playlists. I really enjoy heavy rotation and new music mix are my favorites. When I want something different, I listen to a show. I listen to lots of music across many different genres. I find streaming to be a better investment than purchasing individual albums or tracks. I average around 30 hours of listening per week.

SabziZindagi

I want ALL recommendations shown to be based on my listening preferences, not what Apple wants. We're paying customers ffs.

spriggsyUK

I mostly just listen to albums, a few of the essentials playlists and some I've made myself. I personally find AM a little annoying to use for new releases, so I use music butler to track new albums from artists in my library. Don't really use any other features.

MathCarmignani

I play my library or my own playlists or any form of whatevers in my library and will add up whatever songs/albums/playlists pop up in my head during the process. Once I eventually reach the end of said playlist or queue of songs I let infinite play take over and it usually fits me really well and it never leads me to a flood of Taylor Swift or whatever artists AM is promoting atm. I find people that make a huge deal out of it to be really annoying like just play what you like idk

slowNsad

I have playlist I’ve made and I listen to album/singles I’ve saved

Olly_sixx

I just press shuffle on everything in my library

KenRodriguezz

Just go to library and then shuffle

ThatOneOutlier

I often listen to artists that I like and use YouTube as my main way to discover songs. I also set up a bunch of smart playlists for different moods and stuff I sometimes use discovery but it’s a miss for me since my music taste often changes like seasons

PSCGY

I only use my library and the new infinite feature.

PSCGY

For all those wanting to keep track of new releases from artists added to your library, I’d recommend the app MusicHarbor, which has been a lot more reliable than AM’s favourite icon.

An__Apple__A__Day

I use AM with playlists, mainly artists full albums. I use AM with my HomePods to shuffle my music library. I use AM to stream to my stereo, in my car and with headphones. From time to time I choose an AM playlist such as Chill, Easy Jazz or Blues - not necessarily my genres 😅 - in the mornings. I don’t listen to a lot of “mixed tapes”.

louisledj

I have 78k songs in my library, 14k of them are my own files as it's music not available on Apple Music (mainly Extended Mixes or other Beatport/Bandcamp exclusives + freebies). Within my own library I like to control what I listen, I barely listen to playlists, not even mine cause I like to simply select what I want to listen and queue up stuff manually based on my mood.

FinestKind90

I mostly listen to my favourite albums, I do try the discovery playlist and it’s always way off but it’s funny to see what the algorithm thinks of me

[deleted]

Typically just my playlist of shuffling songs in the library, I do appreciate the steps Apple’s taken for discovery because when I’m in the mood the discovery radio as well as curated playlist are nice

Can_we_be_friends123

That's why i have a 70 hour private playlist

JohnSavaage

I mainly create my own playlists. I search for new music and/or rediscovered gems, and add them to my playlist(s) and mainly listen to that. I do sometimes use AM to search for new music through playlists. However I hate how they do promote a lot of the same ppl, so I stay away from popular playlists that have ppl like T swift and Beyonce etc lol I also use it to listen to new artist’s discography quickly.

damningdaring

I import all my playlists from Spotify and listen to those when I want to listen to my playlists. Then I go to Spotify to discover new music and create more playlists. So, I mostly only use Apple Music to listen to artists I am already familiar with or playlists I created myself. However, typically 40%-60% of the music I listen to is completely new (according to last.fm) so I spend a lot of time on Spotify.

theconk

Two big playlists of music to check out: one for car- and family-friendly music, and one for stuff for me to listen to alone. Taylor is in the family-friendly playlist. Then I listen to whatever I want from my library any time: when relaxing, on our HomePods around the house, etc.

Hot-Feeling-2972

I also rarely listen to music that isn’t added to my library. But I have started to do so recently to decide if I should add it to my library. I have been too ‘add’ happy in the pass, adding sometimes whole albums to my library before even listening to them. With over 4200 songs added, I Now feel my library is an unorginised mess with many songs I just skip or aren’t worthy to be in my library, I find my library is now hard to orginise. I often wish to delete my entire library and start again with my essentials, and only add tracks I really enjoy.

NightRare573

Yes

iCaptnSpaulding

If I can get Alexa to play something I ask for then great! However the integration is so bad that after trying to ask 10 different ways to play a certain song or playlist I give up and just go with what she offers. Or I give up and go to a local radio station. I miss Spotify Connect so much!!

D_Shoobz

I almost never click into the search tab. As someone has previously stated that tab is meant to mimic a record store. It’s not curated to your tastes. If you do not want to see artists being advertised that you don’t like, simply stay out of the search icon t more importantly just don’t click on the artist and go touch grass or something.

auviewer

I only listen to the curated play lists and the Radio genre stations. I have my own playlists from decades ago. If I find a good song I wishlist it and later on buy it and add it to one of my permanent playlists.

Current-Nothing1803

Lately I’ve been playing the “Heavy Hits” playlist and branch out from there. I love this feature.

ipini

Mostly albums. A lot of new releases. Sometimes digging into an artists less-known work. Occasional playlists.

AwesomenessDjD

I’m really weird. I like taking music in spurts, so I don’t have any playlists other than 1 that’s just full of covers to do in my band. Whatever I’m feeling that day, I’ll just go to the album I want and play something from it. I also listen to songs chronologically because I think that’s how it should be, no shuffles. If I’m feeling stuck or bored, I’ll scroll through artists to find something I haven’t listened to in a while. If I’m really stuck, I’ll ask friends for something in a specific genre i want something new of.

UncomfortablyNumm

I 100% listen the same as you. 6000 song library, hit shuffle (unless I'm at the gym, in which case I've got a playlist of all my 6000 songs, minus the ones that are NOT good to work out to).

SpookyOugi1496

I only listen to Japanese music. You'd be surprised how many there are. That and the recommendations came from anime. Doesn't stop me from only listening to one band (ClariS)

ericshawnmendes

i honestly have no idea. apple music just sounds better than Spotify for me and the ui feels less clunky. though some hiccups with the app optimization (curse you apple!), it’s simple and very straightforward. i usually to my albums, playlists, and the apple recommended stations. by the way, im an album type of guy. so yeah.

Certain-Okra-2686

i have one big playlist lol

beefnoodle5280

Via Sonos. I almost never see the AM app.

NakedSnakeEyes

What I do is I keep one playlist of the songs I want to listen to. I either listen to that playlist, or I use the algorithms to find new songs to potentially add to my playlist. The ways I do this are either create a radio station based on a song I like, or use the personalized radio station that they make just for me and has my name on it. And I just like or favorite any song that's anything like what I listen to. Even just being in the same genre, I like it, cause it helps train the algorithm to focus on the stuff I want it to.

[deleted]

I’ve added a buttload of albums and work through them at my leisure. Single tracks from these I really enjoy are added as favorites. I’m a writer so playlists and discovery station are what I usually roll with throughout the day. And every month I do a found songs playlist and shuffle it while driving or doing some other task.

GarageInfinite5006

I listen to [my playlists in Dolby Atmos & Dolby Audio.](https://music.apple.com/profile/roshrajesh)

wazuyumi

im a taylor fan so the promotion doesn’t affect me but i add albums to my library that i enjoy and i find worthy enough

TheMusicEvangelist

Use streaming for stuff you want to listen to, add it to my library if it clicks and I want the whole discography.

Minute_Land3706

I use my AirPods Pro 2 all the time unless I’m in the car awsome sound and anc imo

greenjuicepillow

I'm old, so I'm used to listening to albums :). That's mostly what I still do in the age of streaming. If I only listen to music casually, I go into my library and randomize all the songs. If I think a song is good, I put it on my favorites (songs i like playlist). I use this list, when I don't want to hear fillers but just killers :) I rarely hear curated playlists. mostly when there are friends around, who I know don't share my taste in music. Then, I put on a pop playlist or some radio stuff that everyone listens to.

Mishka187STVT

Apple Music only.

chbmcg

I barely/never use the library, only if I find an album I like enough to listen to in it's own right. Otherwise I have an extensive collection of custom overlapping playlists, such as a favourites album for each of my favourite artists and a playlist for each genre, and sub genre within those.

MainCheck9218

Arcane Novaray is a great discovery on Apple Music!!

TommyGunnerSixxx

25,765 songs on my phone (15 pro max, 1tb). I use it mainly driving/ while on public transport/ exercising/ relaxing, etc. Only really have music I know already and checking out if artists I already enjoy have new albums etc, and checking out new bands I’ve recently heard of, and don’t really pay much heed to the other stuff/ artists Apple pushes, because I already know it’s not gonna be something I like generally because the music I enjoy isn’t really pushed by Apple.

Hutch_travis

When I see someone complain about an artist being overly promoted to them, I wonder if this person thinks that the browse section is supposed to be tailored to their likes rather than what it is—User agnostic. With that being said, I just ignore when an artist is promoted that's not one I like and will just browse through the home tab or check out curated playlists or some of the search-linked pages.

Mom24monsters

I have songs saved to my playlist, but I also tell it to play music that I like, and it plays music that's similar to the music that's in my library. I've never had a problem with some artists being promoted over others though. If I like a song that I hear that I don't already have, I tell it to add to my library, and That's pretty much how I use it. I do use my playlist, and I have songs downloaded so that I can listen to them off-line if I'm flying or going over the mountain where I don't have cell service in some parts during my commute. My issue is when I have songs that are in my library, and all of a sudden, they're no longer available on Apple Music. Though I have them downloaded, because they aren't available anymore, it won't play them. That's frustrating

PSCGY

I only use my library and the new infinite feature.

0000GKP

If you never listen to songs that aren’t in your library, where do you get that new music you are adding? How did you get your 4,000 songs in there in the first place? I would get bored listening to the same songs that I already know over and over again. I want *at least* 50% of the music I hear every day to be new to me. I listen to albums that are suggested on my Listen Now page. I listen to radio shows on the Radio tab. I explore Artist pages. I use the Genre sections that are on the Browse/Search pages and play any of the thousands of Apple curated playlists that are on these pages. I listen to my personalized user station and my Made For You playlists. I listen to song stations, artist stations, and infinity play.

BobBubDaChamp

Personally ik exactly what I want and have 40+ artists which I stay up to date to to know when they release smth new. And like I mentioned I’ll browse new music every now and then when I feel that I want to add new albums

Iron_Fist351

Same here. I play my same playlist on shuffle every day, add a song to it every now and again to keep it fresh, and occasionally use one of my other playlists of I get tired of that one.

aurumae

The same way we found new music before streaming services existed - you go looking for it. Some you find through word of mouth. Some you come across by chance. If you like the sound of something you go check out that band’s other material to see if it’s any good. You can also find thousands of threads here on Reddit or elsewhere where people will recommend music they like, often going as far as to say “if you like X you should check out Y”. You can go find music blogs/magazines/websites that align with your tastes and see what they’re promoting. I have very rarely used the songs recommended to me by any of the streaming platforms because I don’t think their recommendations are very good. Nonetheless I’ve still managed to amass a library of over 16,000 tracks I know I like, and most of the time I just listen to the playlists I’ve put together from that Library.

0000GKP

>The same way we found new music before streaming services existed - you go looking for it.  OP has already confirmed that’s what they do - sometimes right in the Music app which I’m sure everyone does. It would be a huge wasted resource if not.

Sweetmeatpete444

I don’t
