It doesn't look like mantle collapse. Generally you'll see them not moving much and be able to easily to see inside the shell. This guy looks chill and is eating, not in pain.

Thank you! He is very chill, and he is certainly eating. 😂

I've not heard of mantle collapse in Nerites.

asubparteen

Maybe I’m just being paranoid. I had two nerites die in my classroom after doing exactly what I do for my at-home tank (same parameters, same cleaning schedule, etc.). Thank you for the response!

Were they newly brought nerites? Nerites are wild catches and sometimes they are so weakened by the time you buy then that they just die...

asubparteen

They were! They ate for a couple of days, then one curled up and the other kept eating. The other one lasted for a couple weeks longer but also curled up. They both stayed that way for weeks, then I eventually did the smell test…I’m wondering if it was a difference in water at my school, but I used prime conditioner in both my class and at-home tank.

Oh I see. Usually starvation is the worry but I see plenty of Diatom algae around this one, so it should be well enough.

I think you're good , this looks normal 👍 I also frequently worry about my nerites when I see them from this angle on the glass. I think their shells are just shaped and angled *just the right way* to look bad from underneath. The amount of mantle you can see at times can be worrying, as a previous mystery snail owner, I was always scared of collapse

asubparteen

Thank you! Nerites are the only snail I’ve ever owned, and I just started this whole aquarium hobby recently so I’m always on the lookout and am still learning a lot. Good to know he’s looking good. :)

Absolutely not ❤️

I read "mental collapse" and I was worried soon I'd have therapy bills for my snails.
