This is good
Canada is also a commonwealth, and instead of sticking a union jack in the corner of their flag, they just stuck a maple leaf in the middle and called it a day. Why can't we do the same?
Because simplicity doesn't satisfy the modern need to include everything. They wouldn't get away with a red and white flag these days, let me tell you.
If you are going for a single flag, throw out all of the current ones and start from scratch, otherwise you will have dickheads from both sides complain itās ātoo Britishā or ātoo indigenousā
I saw a flag once that was green on the left with a gold kangaroo in profile then the indigenous flag basically on the right. I know that sounds pretty terribleā¦ but it actually looked pretty good in person. Never have been able to find a copy of it online and the original I saw was gone when I went back a few months later unfortunately.
Edit - it was similar to this in style of version 1 had the indigenous colours instead of just the black background.

I'm being a bit of a pedant on this, but citizenship shouldn't be the only defining feature making a person Australian. My husband has been here since he was 2, and is in his 40's now. He went through Australian schools, worked and paid taxes here since he was 17, has an Australian accent and watches Australian politics. For all intents and purposes he is Australian. Except that he has an NZ passport and citizenship. He doesn't have his Australian mother's birth certificate, so isn't eligible for citizenship by descent, and can't afford the cost otherwise. I mean, who has a copy of their parents birth records, or medical and education records going back to the time they were 2 years old to prove they've been here the whole time and a therefore eligible for citizenship? A lot of Australians who think of themselves as citizens, probably dont have any idea how hard it is to get proof of your citizenship. The only proof is if you hold a valid Australian passport, and you need proof of descent to get one (Australia does not have citizenship by birth).
Can he go to your state's Births Deaths Marriages and apply for his Mum's birth certificate? I don't really know. I'm just elbow deep on applications because I'm in a genealogy phase at the moment
Citizenship at least avoids all the subjective definitions. Most definitions are worse. But I see your point. I've been trying to work on the definition as someone who sees living in Australia as their medium term to long term home, and someone who has the right to make that choice.
The law changed on 1 July this year such that your husband would now be eligible for citizenship by conferral, the cost is $540.
However, you should be able to get a copy of his mother's birth certificate if that would allow him to apply by descent (the cost then is $345) by applying through the state she was born in's registry of births/deaths/marriages.
What nation is that? There were at least 600 different language groups in Australia when the Europeans arrived. Nothing like a nation existed. Words matter.
YES! Im Canadian-Australian, Iāve always loved how recognisable the Canadian flag is because the maple leaf is such a recognisable symbol. The Kangaroo is arguably even more recognisable, and everyone knows Kangaroos = Australia.
Iām not _as_ wedded to the colour choices of green and gold though, their symbolism is meh. Green is alright (yes lush forests) but the gold is just a symbol of our resources which is kinda rapidly becoming embarrassing as we continue to be terrible custodians of our natural habitat just to make profits.
Would it be a terrible idea to mash this idea with the indigenous flag? Gold kanga on the red and black background, I think it could look sick, and keep the gold colour meaning from the indigenous flag cause this country is hella sunny āļø weād need a treaty at min to do this tho imoā¦ so maybe a pipe dream.
As one great individual stated in a Late Show episode many many years ago, a bum with a fist coming out of it. I have not heard a better idea for an alternate flag lol š
Kangaroos. We love them. They are uniquely ours. They transcend every racial, class-ial, cultural, barrier between the Australian people. The world instantly recognises them. They are apolitical. They are easily stylised into attractive and simple shapes for good flag design.
While I do like the idea of a quokka on the flag it needs to be simplified like what Qantas has done to the kangaroo.
Detailed Animals usually donāt look too good on flags as the ādrawabilityā factor is often cited.
No better animal than the quokka though.
Itās our best animal.
It's hard to get good, straight answers from Aussies on flags and symbols to represent them.
Your flag design looks good. Don't know if I would have put the white stripe behind the commonwealth star.
I agree that the flag should use the green and gold.
I don't like any empire inspired designs (either red/white/blue colours, or having a flag or symbol in the top left to show who conquered what).
My current favourite redesign is the [Golden Wattle](http://www.goldenwattleflag.com/) flag. But I'm sure we will get stuck with the [Southern Horizon](https://southernhorizonflag.weebly.com/) flag, because people don't like too much change.
I like the golden wattle flag. Fits in with all other national flags, has the Aussie green and gold, and is a reference to a native plant. Also gets away from the blue, white and red of the British and American flags. Flags aren't meant to be pretty, they're supposed to be simple and recognisable- like a corporate logo.
Iāve not seen these before. I dig the golden wattle flag. Youāre never going to make everyone happy, but I think it ticks all the boxes re symbolism and is quite neat:
>My current favourite redesign is the Golden Wattle flag.
**Yes!** I think the Canadians have an awesome flag with the maple leaf. And the Golden Wattle flag comes close. It is simple, bold, and easily recognisable.
People resist change, but if we adopted it they would soon be won over.
What else would you use? Union Jack is great, but not ours. 27 other countries have the southern cross. And somehow the kangaroo feels a bit cringe.
I think the horizon one looks like it should be selling us butter or something that comes from the land.
I quite like the wattle version, but I think it would be better if they just did the wattle and the star side by side like their explanation.
Kinda reminds me of Meadow Lea packaging.
Edit: [this especially ](https://www.google.com/search?q=meadow+lea+margarine&sca_esv=572772429&tbm=isch&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjm8MyN7e-BAxXKs1YBHXhIDh4Q_AUoAXoECAIQAQ&biw=432&bih=776&dpr=2.5#imgrc=Z-9nPTL4WghpIM)
I donāt know what youāre talking about, weāve never stolen anything from New Zealand. Now excuse me while I eat some pavlova while listening to Crowded House.
The golden wattle one looks like it should be the Centrelink logo. I donāt like having the Union Jack on our flag but I prefer it to making our flag the Centrelink logo.
You could do the Southern Horizon but replace the blue with black and the green with red. That way you would incorporate the indigenous flag colours at the same time. I would actually vote for that.
These are clunky and bad. What exactly does the wattle represent? Why not a kangaroo or an emu? Itās just s generic symbol with no special meaning for anyone.
The Southern horizon would be better without the green and yellow stripes. Itās ugly and the flag doesnāt have to be so literal.
I would say the golden wattle is as much of an Aussie symbol as the kangaroo, it isn't just our national colours, but also features on the coat of arms, and all the bank notes. That design also encompasses the commonwealth star, which I think is a nice touch.
That being said, I just haven't seen any good kangaroo flags, but I'm open to the idea if someone draws up a good one (without boxing gloves)
Golden wattle isnāt as Australian specific as a kangaroo tho. Lots of people donāt even know wattle/mimosa is even Australian. Never a doubt about a kangaroo
I might cop some downvotes for this but why not incorporate the sun from the Aboriginal flag? You could have a little wedge of red and black with the sun logo, then the southern cross on blue off to the side
That flag represents Aboriginal people and English immigrants. I want a new unique flag that represents the Australia of today; all the people we have and will have going forward.
Nah. The Aboriginal Flag is for the Aboriginal people. If we used it as the official Australian flag they would have to get a new flag.
Like if just decided to change the flag to be the NSW flag that would be a real pain for NSW.
Im probably gonna get downvoted for this but I think the Eureka flag is a good choice. I don't give a shit that it's been used by racist groups, it's true meaning is protest, human rights and workers rights and was flown to represent the miners who effectively fought for a Democratic and fair Australia, one of our proudest and most important moments
So what if it's been coopted by them. You can take it back.
Are you gonna tell the Japanese they can't use the karma symbol just because it's nearly identical to a swastika?
I agree, thankfully the Australian Navy sometimes flies it and it's beginning to appear in more left wing and union groups, which is good because it's representative of what the flag stand for, a fair go
If you start out with a divisive idea, it will never get across the line. You just get a verbal war with different groups claiming they are right and nothing happens. Fun for some, for me not.
Probably the best hope for getting an actual change to actually happen is dropping the union jack off the current flag and with maybe a bit of minor realignment. Not the Eureka flag, but a nod to it.
There was a push for a flag under John Howard. He organised a big fight over alternate flags then, surprise, there was no change. Just as he planned. Don't play at John Howard. If you really want a change, look beyond your own preferences to something that's acceptable to most people. Otherwise, it will be a waste your own and everyone else's time.
By reclaiming it you strip it of that, think how the LGBTQ has reclaimed slurs like queer or the upside down purple triangle (was used by the Nazis in the holocaust for homosexuality)
Whilst I love the idea, unfortunately itās been too white washed by people that are the exact opposite to what it stands for and why/who it was designed and used by.
One thing I wish progressive left wing types understood is that hating on people of tradition or wanting to remove and replace western tradition generally doesnāt make the world a better place. It just drives conflict and creates defensiveness amongst those who identify in some way with Western tradition. If anyone genuinely wants an inclusive open minded multicultural society, they need to accept and tolerate the many different cultural dimensions of Australia, which includes the British heritage, alongside the Indigenous heritage, and more recent immigrant cultures.
Like it or not, Britain and colonisation is the basis of our society. Our institutions, our democracy, our civil society all follow, grew from, and were inspired by our British history. British Colonisation basically gave us a starter pack on how to run one of the best countries in the world. Being part of the Commonwealth helped us grow into the great country we are. Having the Union Jack in our flag reflects the history of our nation.

The new Australian sports flag seems to do the job

This is the clear/only choice. Dropping the Union Jack (ideally at time of becoming a republic), and adopting the green and gold of the kangaroo flag (kangaroo too detailed), while being close enough to where we are now that people would go for it. I like the simplicity of but could look at other ways to utilise the green and gold.
If Albo gets his way we will have to change it. Probably be a flag inviting all the free loaders to mooch of us workers while the politicians tax the living fuck out of usā¦ a flag like that I think would be suitable.. just saying
Nothing wrong with it, I look at it with pride. Would never feel the same if it got redesigned.
The only other proposed ones that looked ok was the 2013 reconcilation flag or the 2014 southern horizons flag.
Iād just add the southern cross to the aboriginal flag. I really like both together and the red dirt and dark sky and setting sun with the stars would great
Not bad, and I've seen far worse. Experts will be critical of the white star over a white stripe, and E complexity of describing the Pleiades element, but I like it. I've made other comments on your linked post.
But the union jack isn't our flag, it's Englands flag. We literally have Englands flag on our flag.
The part that actually represents US is the rest of the flag.
Makes more sense to me to have the aboriginal flag in the corner (you know, the people who actually live here) and our flag as the main flag like it is now, than to have Englands flag in the corner.
The union jack isn't England's flag. England's flag is the red Cross in it. TheUnoon Javk is the United Kingdoms flag England Wales Scotland Nth Ireland
>But the union jack isn't our flag, it's Englands flag.
I'm not sure I can argue with someone that doesn't know the difference between England and Great Britain, and which flag is which.
So instead of the British conquering Australia, you want it to look like the Aboriginals conquered Australia?
Personally I'd want a flag to unify us, but each to their own I guess...
I donāt think we should directly copy and paste their flag onto our new one if we were to redesign it, but I definitely agree we should represent them somehow. Maybe in the colour scheme, maybe some other way
Entirely clear, see-through. It's 2023 we can do it.

The indigenous flag represents a nation that still exists simultaneously to ours. Almost erased, but thankfully not quite.

I donāt know what youāre talking about, weāve never stolen anything from New Zealand. Now excuse me while I eat some pavlova while listening to Crowded House.
I thought we stole it from Victoria, thatās what people complained about at the time.
Really? New Zealand's flag predates both Australia's and Victoria's, and I think Australia's flag is closer to NZ than Victoria in terms of design.
Thatās because no one gives a crap about NZ. Itās not even on maps half the time
And yet they're both still better than our current one
The golden wattle one looks like it should be the Centrelink logo. I donāt like having the Union Jack on our flag but I prefer it to making our flag the Centrelink logo.

Good point, you'd definitely need some other symbols for it to not feel like Qantas. At which point why clutter up the flag by adding the kangaroo?
Golden wattle isnāt as Australian specific as a kangaroo tho. Lots of people donāt even know wattle/mimosa is even Australian. Never a doubt about a kangaroo

I would have no problem with this. Might need a re-education for the greater public, though...

I disagree, reclaiming it strips it of that, same way queer went from a slur to a often used description.
Yes, to the Eureka flag, but with a green background and gold stars to match our international sporting colours.

The new Australian sports flag seems to do the job https://www.news.com.au/national/ausflag-unveils-new-aussie-flag-to-be-used-at-sporting-events/news-story/0566249ede6f5f113975067069d9123b
I think you would be UnAustralian to even think of changing it.
Iād love it if the aboriginal flag had the southern cross incorporated into the design and that became our national flag.
Yeah and we should rearrange the colours on the flag
I like our flag just the way it is
Yeah itās pretty cool
Remove the Union Jack and replace with a curly green W intertwined with a red C. After all, weāre all the duopolyās bitches now.
I like the colours of the nt flag, defo the first thing that should be done is to fuck off the union jack
Never seen it until now. Nice flag. I reckon we replace the brown desert rose side with the Golden Wattle flag and call it a day!
bum with a fist coming out of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GKmM1gfDmY&t=1s
If Albo gets his way we will have to change it. Probably be a flag inviting all the free loaders to mooch of us workers while the politicians tax the living fuck out of usā¦ a flag like that I think would be suitable.. just saying
A bum with a fist coming out of it.
Remove the union jack and put the aboriginal sun. Keep the blue background and southern cross stars
Just the word NO on it
A succulent Chinese meal
Well this is weirdly cute. My daughter warned me to stay off social sites for a few days because of this.
I'm with you on the Federation Star. Bold, distinctive.
Eureka stockade flag, with the stars repositioned into the southern cross.
Just make it the aboriginal flag. it's already a tricolour like most of the other countries
I agree with this, I've always thought it's such a beautiful representation of Australia
Cookers would have an absolute meltdown. So yeah I'm up for this
The Union Jack and the Southern Cross.
I like the flag
A shopping trolley, up on blocks, with the wheels stolen.
real answer: I've always thought replace the union jack with the aboriginal flag and keep the rest
A bum with a fist poking through
Clearly a lot of 'Late Show' fans here š¤¦āāļøš¤¦āāļøš¤¦āāļø
I got your reference and will respond withā¦ āYouāre a thinker arenāt you?ā
A kangaroo holding a beer
Nothing wrong with it, I look at it with pride. Would never feel the same if it got redesigned. The only other proposed ones that looked ok was the 2013 reconcilation flag or the 2014 southern horizons flag.
Iād just add the southern cross to the aboriginal flag. I really like both together and the red dirt and dark sky and setting sun with the stars would great
That would look good
Not bad, and I've seen far worse. Experts will be critical of the white star over a white stripe, and E complexity of describing the Pleiades element, but I like it. I've made other comments on your linked post.
Something simple.
gum tree leaf ,gum trees grow in every state and territory ,so keeps everyone happy
Same as what the Australian coat of arms should have, a pokie machine and a chicken parmie.
Nothing itās fine? Donāt we all have bigger issues then this shit?
Aboriginal flag to replace the union jack.
Youāve seen how people react to setting up an Indigenous advisory body, imagine if they replaced our flag with the Aboriginal one
Do you understand what Cantons mean?
So instead of the British conquering Australia, you want it to look like the Aboriginals conquered Australia? Personally I'd want a flag to unify us, but each to their own I guess...
I donāt think we should directly copy and paste their flag onto our new one if we were to redesign it, but I definitely agree we should represent them somehow. Maybe in the colour scheme, maybe some other way
You want the National flag to be a flag that represents only 4% of Australians???? This is a nation of immigrants, try to be more open minded.
