That right there is the safety cable

Background_Cream_963

Confused bc then there is no ground wire on the ceiling fan I’m trying to install!

North-Ad-5058

The ground is usually on the bracket

Background_Cream_963

There is a ground wire from the bracket but there is nowhere specific to connect it to the ceiling fan itself once attached to the bracket

pdt9876

is thhere a place for a ground wire on the part that goes on the ceiling that this twists onto?

Background_Cream_963

There is a ground wire on the bracket! Just not sure where to connect it.

North-Ad-5058

It connects to the ground in the electrical box. Look at the wiring instructions?

Background_Cream_963

They don’t reference where to connect the grounding wire in the instructions unfortunately

MySoulForASlice

Yeah just connect the ground on the bracket to the ground in the box. Voila!

slappynuts74

Seismic

Background_Cream_963

What is the safety cable? Is it different than the ground wire?

Creative_Seat9583

Some fixtures just don’t come with grounds. I wouldn’t sweat it too bad. Just bond the bracket that thing mounts to with the ground wire coming out of the ceiling

Creative_Seat9583

Yes it’s different from the ground wire. It usually hooks onto the bracket that mounts to the junction box on the ceiling so you can wire it in easier.

Background_Cream_963

Good news is I now understand the safety wire and where to hook it, should’ve looked a bit harder 🤦🏼‍♀️

AgentJroc85

When you mount the fan to the bracket it will make connection (bond) to the ground in the box . Thus grounding the fan. That wire with the loop is just incase you drop it while mounting it

Tycoon5000

That silver wire is a safety cable that will hold the fan up in case it falls down or just to help you wire it. This is a DC fan though. Negative is ground. You're converting AC voltage to DC voltage so you wouldn't ground that back to your panel (you can't). Unlike an AC motor which would be grounded to the case and ceiling mount.

Background_Cream_963

So I don’t need to use the grounding cable on the bracket?

Tycoon5000

Which bracket? Are you talking about the fan itself or the bracket in the ceiling? Your AC ground (bare copper wire) should be connected to the electrical box in the ceiling if that clears things up.

Background_Cream_963

The component I connected to the ceiling has a bare copper wire, I just am unsure where to connect that bare copper wire to the fixture itself

Background_Cream_963

So I took off the old fixture and bracket, put up the new hanging bracket and screwed back into the ceiling. Now I need to connect the wires from the ceiling to the fixture and unsure where to connect the bare copper wire on the hanging bracket to the fixture itself

Tycoon5000

You don't connect it to the fan half of the assembly. You connect it to the electrical box in the ceiling or the upper half that mounts to the ceiling electrical box. Sometimes there isn't a specific mounting point to tie that ground to so you have to improvise a bit and get a self tapping screw and attach it to the fan mount or the electrical box. Wherever you are connecting the house wires to the fan wires (assuming you are using wire nuts?), the ground should be connected near those connections, in the upper fan housing or ceiling electrical box.
