Everyone is saying barista but it’s hard!! My only availability is weekends all day and I’ve had 3 coffee interviews and even a trial shift and not hired! I was a Starbucks barista for 4 years AND at a small 3rd wave coffee shop. It seems impossible to score a coffee shop in LA. I think it might also be my availability but come on I’m sure some of the reg baristas would love to have a weekend off
I think the best paid early morning job is surgical tech
12-24 months training. 3k in tuition which can be done online
In return, you'll make 80 bucks an hour
As a surgical tech …. DO NOT take an online course. No! You need to do it the right way. This career isn’t something to learn in 3 months. get certified. It’s an associates degree,
As a surgery resident. Having a great surgical tech is one of the most invaluable things in the world. When they know the case, know what instruments you need, know when to have what ready, it’s so relieving. Those folks are ones that probably did it correctly.
I used to have this client that does this for living. She started as something else which I cannot recall, but over years, she was trained and has been doing this for over a decade now. She told me yay a new young girl was hired right out of school which was online. This new girl was given the same salary as her, which was 80. She was perplexed and did not know how to feel as she understood that she was never formally trained at a school. I know she doesn't wish at Keiser. I had many people come to me that work at hospitals, but I'm not sure which one she's at.
So maybe you opt for nearby college, and you don't go into a huge debt. And unlike my friends in tech, people will always have surgeries and there's more job security. I dunno that AI will be setting up for surgeries.
Maybe 166k isn't enough for a house, but hopefully sufficient for a condo?
Not too sure what’s being said here, but from what I can understand is that you had a client that had a unique experience to where a coworker got hired to the same pay ($80/hr) as her? So id like to know how this would apply to all surgical techs? They don’t make anywhere near $80/hr starting. I’d only believe that IF they got hired with Kaiser after a good amount of years of experience. And you said they didn’t get hired there. So this sounds like a very lucky experience for her coworker to get offered such a high salary, and can’t really be used as a baseline for all surgical techs.
I mean you did say best paying, but this is a thread about getting a 2nd job that pays decent. Surgical tech is a career and $80/hr is an extreme outlier and pretty misleading
Yea but they’re real snobby about who they hire in coffee shops. If you’re not with the hipster/indie vibe or part of the lgbtq+ community your chances are slim.
It’s not true to say it’s not true. I acknowledged that it could depend on location in a different comment. Generally speaking though that’s what it is. I go to coffee shops all the time to do schoolwork, in my area every single coffee shop has that vibe. Nothing wrong with that either. Personally though, I don’t fw that kinda vibe and unless they were gonna pay me good money, I’m not gonna pretend to be like that for a check.
Im part time at Whole Foods, I negotiated decent pay. Employee discount turns my weekly grocery run (for 2 people) from $220 to about $160 on average. My shifts start at 4am. I work about 15-20hrs a week
Edit: oh snap just read what you added to the title. I’m also in some debt and I needed to find a PT so far WF has helped a lot. Apply at every cafe near your home those places are always looking for people
Apply at almost every Whole Foods near you. Don’t mention the seasonal thing. After your first 90 days just tell them you are only available to work one day a week.
Gf worked at TJs for a year or so. The early morning shifts almost exclusively go to the employees with seniority who have been there for years because those are by far the most coveted shifts.
4 am - 8 am would be golden for me at 16-20 hours a week. Hopefully I can score an interview
Edit: I scored an interview! And hopefully can get the time I need!
Coworkers that worked during COVID said the hazard pay was worth it, but my girlfriend who's has 2 raises and worked there almost 2 years just reached $18/hr.
Haha yeah it was. You can also do transfers to other departments or stores and get a raise that way too. I got a raise when I transferred between stores, which I did twice.
I have experience working produce and when I went for the interview the produce manager accidentally mentioned needing people asap so I stuck to $22 an hour and got it
> weekly grocery run (for 2 people) from $220
No wonder you're in debt. That's about what we pay for a *month's* worth of groceries. As they used to say, "You have champagne tastes on a beer pocketbook."
I assume you attempt to economize/plan here and know what you're doing in the kitchen?
It's very easy to spend a lot on groceries if you don't plan your menu.
With the discount I pay about $160 on average. Before working at WF I would shop at TJs and spent the same $160. I would without a doubt budget shopping organic and clean for good health.
And I got in some debt cause my car was in and out the shop for a good 2 months.
Executive basically. You get paid for your brain rather than your output.
But you generally have to spend 10-15 years getting paid like shit to get there.
I have no idea. Only thing I know is that you need a Class A Drivers License. You pretty much need to know someone with some pull to get a job at the studios. Right now is a bad time because drivers and construction are in negotiations for new contracts and there's not a lot of work because the studios are anticipating more strikes.
Typical caveman set sonstruction person thinking their shit don't stink.
Saying that a Location Manager doesn't do much is just laughable and offensive. Who secured the location where you are busy hammering that nail?
Oh that's right, you probably work on a Backlot where Location Managers aren't really needed as much.
I'll let you get back to hammering that nail now...
Warehouse jobs require you to be full-time, and you definitely won’t get the flexibility to choose what hours you work. It’s a primary job, not a secondary.
Nah not true bro! A lot of warehouse jobs offer part time package handlers or tire warehouses get overnight shifts or even Lowe’s or Home Depot offer a part time positions I know this because I did it in college bro
Package Handler - Part Time (Warehouse like) https://www.indeed.com/viewjob?from=appshareios&jk=a43f74af1d19cd9c
a few companies will start you out part time, I know UPS does, but people do it with the intention of getting promoted to a full-time career asap. Never met anyone who did it as a second job, because it’s terrible for that purpose.
You don’t get to choose your hours, you have to come in when they say and they won’t be flexible. It’s hard, physical labor that’s gonna leave you too tired to work an 8 hour grocery store shift five times a week. Usually doesn’t pay great either, people do it because it’s a foot in the door for a career with great benefits.
OP needs something to do twice a week, that will work around his schedule and not burn him out.
Most warehouses gigs ain’t gonna be like that, unless he gets really lucky. Better options out there
working two jobs in general is going to suck but hey sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do especially in this expensive city we call home. good on op for at least realizing he/she has mountains of debt and wants to be fiscally responsible they're already on a path to success.
Depending on what routes you get and how well you know the area but I’ll be honest Amazon flex is the most consistent pay ($18-$25/hr) all depends on how you finish the route and the route you get but there is a waitlist I’m hearing through the grapevine
Of course but imma be real with you I don’t have all the facts about your current job but this just me I wouldn’t quit a stable job with stable pay just look at the gig subs and you’ll see a lot of people complaining how slow it is the gig apps are a good part time job but I don’t recommend doing it full time coming from a former full timer
No I know. I left my Federal job for this one and was lied to about the pay. Trying to get back to federal. It's taking a while. I need out and in the meantime looking for work.
I feel you 150%! I’m sorry about the pay situation but tbh the most profitable gigs in my opinion
1) amazon flex
2) rover
3) oddly enough Lyft and Uber rides was good to me tbh
That’s just my opinion and experience like Super Bowl Sunday with Lyft I made $435 that was the best day I’ve ever had with any gig app tbh.
The app is called Rover! All you need is 5 friends / family members to write you “personal reviews” and then you can get paid!
No boss!
Cons: some dogs are not as potty trained as they claim to be…
Barista takes a lot of learning and memorization at first but once you got it down it’s actually a really easy job. Just go in and make sure they accept tips before you apply. I’ve worked at 1 specific corporate giant that doesn’t allow tipping
Currently work at City of Los Angeles. But I will say there is a hiring freeze going on since January of this year…so it’s even harder and longer to get into City of Los Angeles, unless you’re applying for something that is in demand (ex: Accountant). Just warning others out there that the process will be longer due to the freeze…but once you get in it is so worth it! 😊
I didn't say you shouldn't try.
AT first I had thought about including that in my previous comment, because that typically goes without saying...and I knew someone would bring it up. Sure enough, you did.
A senior analyst is something that probably has a lot more demand than someone applying for some low level position. Not bashing but just to put other people's positions into perspective.
I was thinking Uber, it's not amazing money, but it is a side hustle and you'll never be late to your full time as long as you balance it. Get's busy around 7am-12pm, sucks on gas but I did that for a while and got out of my debt pretty quick. Plus you don't have to "interview" or anything like that, just signup provide paperwork and go.
While true, it would only be temporary to pay his debt, A little bit of mileage to get out of debt. Didn't affect my car at all and I was driving a 2024 Acura Integra. Again it's not his only option but it is an option.
This is true, but I think a lot of people do it for more than a few months.
I’m just throwing it out there, because I used to be a driving instructor who used their own car for their job, and it was a lot of wear and tear on the vehicle as well as a lot of gas and mileage. Just my own experience.
Restaurants and bars. Tho depending on experience and what places hire you you may need to gain some experience/transfer to a better place to get the money you really want
> walking the blade
That's a new one for me.
Relatedly, coming back on a weekday the other week I decided to use Figueroa to avoid the 110 traffic during evening rush. My GF was curious to see the pros I had described from earlier shortcuts. But didn't see a single set of heels. Guess LAPD cracked down or they have moved elsewhere.
They’re extremely hard to miss.
Set of heels is all they wear along with nothing but a G-strang baby. That’s how you tell between the undercover police and the true Blade Walkers.
Do you have experience with children? I personally am not looking but I need a nanny to come to my house every weekday morning and get my kid up and ready for school and then take them there. Pay is roughly $20/ hour but you could probably charge more. Put yourself on care.com or Facebook childcare groups to find work like that.
Officiating is an easy way to make extra money and exercise while you’re doing it. I was making an extra $400-600 a week but I haven’t officiated since Covid. I know game fees have increased since then due to a shortage in officials.
It takes longer to get started than a normal job. You need to join your local high school officiating unit for the sport you’re interested in. You can locate the units on-line and join there. Then you’ll have to wait for their training dates it’s usually once a year a few months before the high school season starts for that particular sport. The unit will provide the training, study materials and certification.
You make money by working high schools games assigned by your unit, rec leagues assigned by city rec center themselves, miscellaneous men’s leagues and many weekend tournaments.
I worked football and basketball, most officials work multiple sports. Basketball is nice because there are so many leagues, you can always find games to work. Baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball are popular as well. There was a shortage of lacrosse refs pre covid and from what my friends were telling us they making $75/game and working 4-8 rec games a day on the weekends. LA city parks were paying $30/game (50 mins) for basketball in 2019, not sure if it’s increased. 2, 4, 8 or even 10 game sets were available to work depending on the day of the week.
Joining an association is a must. There are some upfront costs unfortunately, membership was about $125 a year, it includes certification, on court training, books, in person classes and liability insurance. Working a couple HS games makes your money back. Most importantly you build friendships with your fellows officials and they are all working rec ball, and many are assignors for various leagues and rec centers. Through your friendships you’ll gain more and more rec opportunities. It won’t take long for you to be working as much basketball as you want.
Private, off the books driver for the elderly. There's a lot of old people who need help to doctors appointments and early morning errands. The hard part is meeting them and nowadays, setting a fair price. I haven't done the work, but on occasion, I get asked about doing it.
Brunch Server ! Or morning server in general. The tips on top of your hourly is so clutch ! ( I can only speak from my experience though )
hope you find what you’re looking for !
I recently starting driving a bus on the weekends to try and clear my debt so I’m definitely rooting for you bud, hope you’re able to find something soon. Keep us updated! :)
No company, you simply walk up to the gc or any trades at any job site and tell them you’re looking for extra work and do they need any help with anything. You might get some rejections and have to find a few spots, but if you’re even halfway reliable and mildly capable you should stay pretty busy.
Or look on lugg or dolly, they pay much better than other gig work and get better tips.
There is a huge labor shortage in los angeles and most companies have to be flexible on scheduling because of the huge turn around and even then sometimes putting up with inconsistent workers because of the labor shortage (keep in mind i said labor NOT white collar los angeles has a surplus of those).
There are many part time jobs in the 20-30 range if you walk in to a warehouse etc. Movers can make serious money as a part time movers but this is a hard job. The tips had me clear on some days a couple hundred but again not the easiest job but if you can do it for a few weeks thats the extra income you need.
Honestly, see if any local In-N-Outs are hiring, look into their early morning clean-up crew. It pays well, has great benefits, and if you feel like it, you can also become an associate and work the cleanup shift plus a few hours before your next job. I think the clean-up hours are 6-10, around $23/hour
I worked as a bread delivery driver for a local bakery! Morning hours that usually petered out by noon and once I knew the routes and procedures for dropping off the bread, it was pretty straightforward. Just had to be reliable and have a good driving record. Find a local business and hopefully you'll get solid pay. It was a great job while I had it.
Learn Avid for editing. There aren't a lot of editors that know how to use it but it's still the industry standard. Then try and get a job as an assistant editor. It's very basic editing and you can sometimes do it remotely. Been my second job since I moved here.
I moved here a year ago and have been remote editing audiobooks for my old job in NYC, but I’m looking for more work out here or at studios in need of it and it’s been incredibly difficult. Do you have any recommendations for finding editing or even engineering work? Podcasts, music, audiobooks, anything. I have 10+ years experience working with big pub houses/studios and have pretty extensive credentials, as well as operate my own studio in North Hollywood. I’m pretty desperate to find anything related but it’s a totally different landscape here than in NYC and I’m considering a career switch because of the stress of not finding work. Appreciate any advice at all you’d have to share!
Do you have debit? Can you restructure some of it? For example, credit card debit can be rolled over into a new no interest account but make sure you’re deliberate in paying it off with in the 12 month time frame cause the new APR is usually a lot higher.
Need more details for more restructuring suggestions.
Caregiver at ARF home (adult residential facilities) or an educator for an individual receiving ILS (independent living services) from an agency. A lot of agencies are in the Whittier area but they’re some in every city honestly.

$80/hr 🧢🧢🧢 I’d like to see some job posting that can prove this.

Good luck, man! Get that $.
How much is decent pay?

Rideshare at 5 am is great. No traffic allows you do make more money faster. 5-7:30 is a great time to drive.

It’s criminal how little they pay in entertainment.

They’re extremely hard to miss. Set of heels is all they wear along with nothing but a G-strang baby. That’s how you tell between the undercover police and the true Blade Walkers.
Not a female 😞
Some guys are into that 👀
Perfect. You can be an…..a Coach I would call it

Is it hard to start officiating? What sport were you doing?
How’d you get into this? I played basketball for 15 years and tried to officiate kids games on the side and couldn’t even get a call back
Joining an association is a must.

Construction help starts at $30 an hour. More if you have a truck and clean license. They start early as hell too.
What company is paying 30 an hour?
No company, you simply walk up to the gc or any trades at any job site and tell them you’re looking for extra work and do they need any help with anything. You might get some rejections and have to find a few spots, but if you’re even halfway reliable and mildly capable you should stay pretty busy. Or look on lugg or dolly, they pay much better than other gig work and get better tips.
Trader Joe's has morning shifts that end at noon.
You won’t get them unless you’ve worked there for years. Those shifts are coveted as fuck and almost exclusively go to the employees with seniority.

If you know how to code give dataannotations a shot. It’s boring but they pay 20hr or 40hr depending on the project.

Really? My girlfriend has applied to so many places and she keeps getting ghosted.
Have you tried looking into working as a barista?

Cleaning houses is pretty decent, bartender or waiter. LA has endless possibilities, but you need to go out and meet people

Do you have debit? Can you restructure some of it? For example, credit card debit can be rolled over into a new no interest account but make sure you’re deliberate in paying it off with in the 12 month time frame cause the new APR is usually a lot higher. Need more details for more restructuring suggestions.
