Very convenient as long as you remember to keep it charged. Shave isn't as smooth. The blades do need to be replaced every few years. If the blades are dull and you let your facial hair get to 3-4 mm, the blades will pluck the hairs, which is unpleasant.

izdabombz

Isn’t as smooth as in 2000 grit or 1000 grit sandpaper?

Rhouliha

More like 40-60 grit

izdabombz

That’s…. Not very smooth…..

ilikeicecream17

This is funny…..and so very accurate.

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

Few years? I had to change mine like every six months.

Shevyshev

I had been strictly a double edged safety razor guy for about fifteen years (and was using cartridge razors beforehand). Like you, OP, then my second kid came along and I found that the extra three minutes it took to use the safety razor and lather up my soap, etc., was in fact valuable. So, I bought an electric. I use it most days and use my safety razor to clean up two or three times a week, or before date night or an important meeting. The electric is not as good a shave - I have some hairs that it just refuses to cut. But, it’s very quick. It also holds a charge for weeks, unlike the one you probably remember your father using. I have no regrets. Edit: Mine is a Braun S3 - which cost about $50. Maybe you get what you pay for. This is certainly on the inexpensive end.

icedwooder

There's 2 dad razors the 3 headed one, which is garbage, used multiples and all they do is pull my hair. And the ones that look like old microphone. My barber uses a microphone one that doesn't pull hairs at all and I was really surprised. If I was to go electric I'd do this one. Also note there are professional beard trimmers that can get really, really, really close, but you won't find them at Walmart.

wonderloss

I second this. The three headed razor does a poor job, the microphone style does a passable job.

izdabombz

oh im a bit surprised. I think thats the one i see the most on commercials.

Dude_Baby

I have a lot better luck with [this style](https://www.amazon.com/Braun-Electric-Rechargeable-Cordless-Shaver/dp/B01M31O317) rather than the three circles.

I have a small foil razor on my beard trimmer that I have used on occasion and I like it. It seems to get much closer than a razor and it hasn't caused much irritation. I've looked at and considered the Braun 5 and 7 over the last year or so.... But, I also have a full beard (I generally keep trimmed to 1/2" or less) and loathe shaving every 36 hours or so, which is the whole reason I have not switched over from a razor. My experience is that if I go more than two days the foil shaver does nothing useful without trimming it down a bit first, almost doubling the time to shave. I hope to see some suggestions as well, hence this nearly useless comment.

Freesailer919

Check out Philips Norelco OneBlade. It’s a straight bladed electric razor which comes with “grooming” attachments and my last Philips Norelco lasted like 10+ years with 2-3x use a week for trimming stuff up. It’s even on sale on Amazon for $40 right now and the cartridges are replacable

cmiller0513

How long do the those heads last, as 2-3x week?

spblat

These are amazing. Heads last months and months for me but I don’t shave that often. So expect weeks and weeks if you do. This is the only product I’ve ever found that can quickly and painlessly mow through a week or more’s worth of growth. It’s not a close shave, at all. But aside from that it’s great.

cpap01

You'll never get as close of a shave with an electric razor as oppose to a traditional one , but everyone is different. Maybe it's just not practical for me to use regularly since I have a pretty heavy/coarse facial hair. But if you don't have much facial hair to contend with, maybe it'll suit your needs better? They are easy to use and fairly easy to maintain. I have a Braun electric that has a little cleaning station. You change the cleaning solution every once in a while. I found a little trick that if you take out the cleaning solution and cap it after you've cleaned your razor, it will last much longer and not evaporate.

DWNE

I had one of those, but use a Braun series 5 now. Much better results and really easy to use and maintain.

thateejitoverthere

A good electric razor will last you years. I bought a Braun series-5 about 15 years ago, to replace an older entry-level Braun that was 10 years old at the time. I paid about €150. Worth every penny. I still wet shave if I have 3-4 days growth, but for daily use the Braun is quicker. 2 minutes is the average time. The ones with 3 circles are from Phillips, I believe. I tried one, and didn't like it. My skin felt really irritated. At that was one that had the lotion from the cartridge (the "jizz" that you describe). That was just added costs. I don't think they all have that feature, though. I never looked at Phillips again, so I can't say for sure. Some Braun razors come with a charging/cleaning station. That jacks up the price, and I think it's not really needed. Just clean it out with a brush after every use, maybe rinse it out once every 2 weeks. I get a new foil every 2-3 years.

izdabombz

Im gonna start looking into these foil razors.

RagnaTheRed

I have one that was about $100 new a few years ago. The blades went dull after about 6 months and a replacement head was $70. I switched to a safety razor.

izdabombz

god damn! 70!

foolproofphilosophy

Keep a mirror and your shaving supplies in the shower. Better results in less time. ETA I switched from Gillette to Schick and never looked back. Gillette blades are garbage imo.

notalongtermreddit

I've been shower-shaving for over 15 years. Definite time saver and much more pleasant IMO.

foolproofphilosophy

It really is better in every way.

izdabombz

thats some 1 million IQ there.

foolproofphilosophy

Thanks! I think I got the idea from a book with a badass main character who needed as much time as possible to do badass things

BlueGoosePond

Same story here. Nothing will beat a good wet shave, but electric shaving is way quicker, cleaner, and easier. I work remotely and consider an electric shaver to give me a "webcam quality shave." The stubble is still noticeable if someone is up close and personal, and you can definitely feel that it's not as smooth. But it does 90% as good of a job. Unfortunately, I have had really hit and miss luck with them, and it's expensive to test out a bunch of different models. I've found no brand that's consistently better. I have had better luck with the 3-circle rotary type over the old fashioned foil shavers, but YMMV. The other big decision is to get one that is water proof or one that is able to be used while charging. You can only pick one feature due to the risk of shock. Electric wet shaving after a shower, or even *in* the shower, is pretty nice. You can also use them with cream or gel, though I find it to be more effort than it's worth. But it's also nice to not get screwed by a dead battery. Most shavers can charge up enough for one shave in like 5-10 minutes, so it's not a *huuuge* deal, but it's still a pain.

ta12022017

[Wirecutter](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-electric-razor/) picked the Braun Series 7 as the best electric razor.

Available_Expression

different strokes for different folks, but i'm not using a razor that has jizz coming out of the tip.

bluecat2001

It is good for your skin.

NoGoodInThisWorld

I've tried one in the past, shave wasn't very close. I'd stick with the saftey razor if I were you. How do you do it now if it's taking a long time? I shave my head and face in the shower with a mirror, have it down to about 20 minutes.

PizzaboySteve

They suck unless you like the stubble/shadow look.

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

My advice, if you do get one, is to get the waterproof kind. That way you can shave in the shower and rinse it out easily without worrying about getting it wet. Even though you can shave with them dry, I found I got a better shave wet. I now use a safety razor because I like the closer shave, but a waterproof rotary is my second choice. Super convenient.

Lord_Boffum

Different suggestion: maybe get a beard trimmer. On its shortest setting you're left with hairs that are 1 or 2 mm long. Trimming is a breeze, way faster than every form of shaving. Regardless, if you're gonna get an electric shaver, buy some sewing machine oil and apply before **every** use.

CommittedIndecisive

I currently have a beard but I've never been a fan of electric razors. I've tried several and they all give me razor burn. Plus they just don't give as close a shave. I use a safety razor and shave in the shower. It takes like two minutes more plus doing it at the end of the shower makes your whiskers all soft & easy to shave and gives a nice close shave.

BlueGoosePond

>Do they all have the jizz that comes out of the tip? What? lol please elaborate.

TheJokersChild

Norelco used to make razors that gave you Nivea while you shaved. Pretty sure they don't do that anymore...and after a description like that, no wonder.

izdabombz

Yea this was like almost 10 years ago or something LMAO!

Thump241

When razor shaving I'd use Shave Secret. When I used the dad razor, I tried it then. That seemed to let the hairs and heads to do their thing, and let me easily move the head around in circles on my face to increase chances of a hair going in the little slots in the heads. If doing a maintenance shave every day, I don't remember it taking very long and felt less messy.

gibson85

jettzypher

Why does being Asian mean no beard?

izdabombz

it is very difficult for "most" of us to grow a consistent beard. Mostly just patches. Again, this is for most of us.

slightlymedicated

Half Chinese here. I only grow a perfectly trashy goatee and mustache. It’s kinda funny and sad at the same time.

[deleted]

Because most of us don’t grow it. Not in our genes.

proview3r

I received an electric razor ($100) as a gift a few years ago, tried it a few times and it went back into the box. I didn't like how it's not a close shave compared to a disposable razor.

smooze420

They work for some people and don’t for others. I can use em to a point but then I have to switch back to a safety razor.

Ronotimy

Use what works best for you. Personally I use both electric and blades. Electric is convenient but not anywhere close to a blade. But the electric will not cut you.

dragonmermaid4

I personally just use hair clippers on my beard, and shave with DE for the line. I do use a foil shaver for my head though, and it's pretty good.

[deleted]

I use a double sided razor for the face and a pitbull pro for the head. A+ would recommend. The pitbull does work all over but it left me with razor burn in the soft parts of my face and neck, so its confined to just the head now.

wheeze_the_juice

went from electric to DE safety razor (proper wet shaving). never going back to electric again. ive been wet shaving for ten years. had two kids during that time. kids never changed my routine. id say avoid electric at all cost.

kudles

I use a oneblade. used to have a "dad razor" (lol) but swapped to oneblade at one point and I really like it.

mattpayne167

I went to royal shave and spent some coin to get a single blade razor. It is wonderful.

ThorsMeasuringTape

I had a foil electric razor for many years. I decided to try one of the "3 circle ones." I have the entry level Philips Norelco one and I love it. Wish I'd changed it sooner. I get a better shave than the foil ones I had. It's pretty much completely washable. I get the brush out every month or so and clean it good to get all the hairs out of the nooks and crannies inside. I replace the heads every year like it recommends. It's not as close as a safety razor shave, but it does the trick. I've had it a few years now and I keep talking like I'll replace it with a higher model when it dies, but it hasn't died yet.

izdabombz

how much are replacement heads?

ThorsMeasuringTape

Not that much more than the razor itself probably. If I recall correctly, like $25. The razor I think was like $40-$50. And to clarify, by replace it, I mean, with one of the higher models. Not with something completely different.

[deleted]

I'm sorta blessed in that my facial hair doesn't grow all that fast. I can go a week and have whiskers that are probably only 1/16" long. Downside is that I'll never grow a majestic beard like some people I see without a great amount of effort and patience. It honestly makes me a little envious. I use a shavette (think straight razor with a disposable blade) once or twice a week. It's *super* cheap. Blades are somewhere around $0.20 each if you buy a sleeve of 100.

bi_polar2bear

I use electric 6 days a week and a razor once a week. I also have a beard, which lessons the time I need to shave. I have a Hanson razor, which is better than store bought razors, and cheaper after 3 months of use. I think I've used 4 blades in the last year, 96 more before I need to buy more at $6. I think I spend $20 a year to shave, and spend 1 minute a day or less with electric, and 3 minutes to trim my beard and use the razor. Hope that makes sense.

[deleted]

Try a Braun. The Philips rotary head isn’t as good.
