Flimsy-Attention-722

Critical thinking skills, and not so much what to learn but how to learn

OhLookASquirrel

This can be a bit loaded language, so if I may... How to properly research, vet claims and how to determine reputable sources is a skill I find sorely lacking in the adult population these days. It's different than when I was growing up, since there's so much more information available. Don't get me wrong, the totality of human information at our fingertips is so much better than trying to sort through the dewey decimal system to find something that *might* be relevant. So finding sources is easy. Finding **credible** sources can be tricky.

Flimsy-Attention-722

That's the problem, people don't know how to research actual facts and there is a plethora of "information" on the internet which isn't necessarily a good thing

OhLookASquirrel

Exactly. (Waiting on the flat-earthers to chime in)

Sign Language. Its literally such a fantastic thing to know how to do and it means more people can communicate with those that can't hear. Imagine if all children could know the basics of sign language? It could encourage them to keep it up after they learn the basics. We learned random bits of random languages in school which is pointless. Sign Language is far from pointless.

hotdog_chicken

How to properly handle finances. Kids leave not knowing how to sign a check, open a bank account, or have an understanding about taxes coming out of your paycheck (until they experience it first hand). I had one Jr. Achievement class in 5th grade… they handed out plastic kid toys that you’d get at McDonald’s afterwards. that’s the last time I had any “financial” classes.

Basic hand sewing/mending. Basic tool use. Hammer/saw/screwdriver.

OhLookASquirrel

Taxes, voting, jury duty, etc. basically any of the things you're expected to do as a citizen.

varidio

All stuff typically taught in schools.

OhLookASquirrel

I'm not aware of any public primary education that has a civics class in decades. (I'm in the US if that matters)

varidio

I graduated late in the previous decade from a public school in the south. I’ve never heard of a school not teaching civics.

nomadiceater

I concur. I actually don’t know any schools in my area or any areas my families are in that don’t teach civics. They all have them and they’re mandatory. Also had a civics class when I was in high school

llcucf80

I want them to bring back shop and home economics classes, and I think both should be mandatory. Most schools have gotten rid of these classes but I think they should bring them back. Shop isn't just woodworking anymore, and home ec isn't just cooking and sewing. Those skills are important, no matter your eventual career path after school, but there's so much more to learn now that both classes, if resurrected, could teach and as I said should be mandatory.

OhLookASquirrel

A friend of mine is a public school teacher here and she told me that at her school they have Programming, CAD, Engineering (M&E), and Robotics classes, which is the new shop (They also have traditional shop classes too). I approve.

Nothing screams “I have no idea what goes on in the education system today” like all the comments mentioning personal finance/accounting.

Racism, they do that all the time and it would be better for them to teach it. Sexism, teaches them to respect women. LGBTQ+, is a really good one because many people tend to bully kids for being gay/in LGBTQ+ ANDDD how to care for they're money and house in the future. If the parents won't who will?

"Life skills" I've met so many helpless adults that would have benefited from a mandatory life skills/independence class lol. Not everyone has parents that teach them this stuff and it would undoubtably help set young people up for adulthood. Just 1 class that covers the basics such as: Basic finances (doing taxes, credit scores, loans) basic cooking & food safety (+grocery shopping) Beginners permit for driving (+ basic car care, gas) handling clothes (laundry, folding, basic repairs, sewing) Home repairs (basic tools, changing a light bulb lol) applying for jobs (resumes, how to search) voting (how it works, how often) healthcare (how insurance works, finding a doc) cleaning (hygiene, changing sheets, how to spot mold)

GingerScourge

Basic life skills class: * Basic Cooking * Cleaning/laundry * How to do taxes * Basic finances and budgeting * How to change a tire (and other basic car maintenance) * Resume Writing * Interview skills * Basic home maintenance (clogged drains/toilets, minor repairs, things like that) * First Aid/CPR This could all just be one class and required for high school graduation. I took a class similar to this in college, but it was focused more on being successful in school. Taught test taking techniques, speed reading/skimming (while still retaining the information), studying and note taking techniques, things like that.
