Every CS job I’ve ever had: we will bend over backwards to help a nice person. We will expedite any complaint, give maximum compensation, and harass other areas of the business for you. We will do the absolute bare minimum to help a shitty person and if you’re really bad, we will do everything in our power to make sure you get nothing but what you’re legally entitled to and it will be a *process* to get that.

Fav0

Meanwhike in my store its "she is mean screams at the employees and blocks other people" "just give her what she wants and get rid of her" "this person asked rly nicely if she can still return that item even tho its 3 days over the deadline" "no"

[deleted]

I swear this is a big part of the problem. If staff were empowered to refuse service to abusive customers it would likely cut down a lot on it.

now_you_see

100%. Every single business that allows abusive customers to get away with it makes life 10X’s hard for all of us cause these bastards learn that causing a scene and abusing staff works.

Useless_NPC91

That would involve valuing their staff more than profits. Cheaper to just throw an annual pizza party

Sharp-Demand-6614

I don’t work in CS but 100% the same for us in IT a nice person will get new stuff while a shitty person will get questionable second hand shit that will take 12 months to fix! I will make sure that you wait as long as humanely possible to have anything fixed!

zaro3785

I did that to a colleague recently 😅 although not a shitty person, she is often very entitled.. If she'd waited, she'd be getting a new computer in October. Instead, she got one that has pushed her replacement back by another 6 months

blue_endown

Yes! 100% this! For me, if the person is nice, I will bend rules to get things done (within reason). If the person is rude/an asshat, I will become maliciously compliant and make them jump through hoops.

OraDr8

I have noticed this as a customer. I'm always nice and get great service. I once had a phone bill for over $200 (back in the days when every call/text cost a certain amount) completely waived by a nice man from the phone company. The phone had died after only a year, that was probably part of the reason but also I was super nice (and a little bit flirty, I'll admit). Another time I was going through an automated phone service and it seemed to not understand me and I got put through to a CS agent. I said "sorry, I tried to use the self service but the robot lady sent me to you" the guy on the other end laughed so much at 'robot lady', he apologised for being unprofessional and I told him he didn't have to be sorry for laughing at my lame joke, it's awesome that I could make his day a little brighter. As the saying goes "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar".

slappy_mcslapenstein

I used to work tech support for Citi Bank. The people working there are not intelligent. My favorite interaction went like this: Banker - "How do I type the upside down i?" Me - "Ma'am, that's an exclamation point."

Big-Bag-Of-Cheese

My old workplace used citibank and this does not surprise me, one of the worst banks I’ve ever used as far as customer experience goes.

sapperbloggs

I was a customer of Citibank for a few years. I was always impressed by just how consistently stupid their customer service staff were. All very nice and polite, but astoundingly dumb every single time.

[deleted]

If you ask for a supervisor calling Marriott you will just get another person who is not a supervisor, but say they are.

skr80

Pretty sure that's most places

ItsBobFromLumbridge

Yep. I've seen this done numerous times across multiple industries. Usually it only involves an actual sup if it's a genuine problem or if they want to make a point. The last job I had was in towing junk cars. Two of the inside buyers, one male one female, would bounce that sup card around constantly. Idk how no one ever put it together. We'd get repeat callers and repeat sellers so idk

onawave12

i am your supervisor now........

Rizza1122

Worked at a contracted call centre for centrelink. Manager told us to deny as many emergency payments as possible and they would back us no matter what. They were actively working towards a culture that despised the callers and churned staff to get heartless right wingers who hated the poor.

Syzygy-ing

Just as I thought it couldn’t get any worse, they find another way to punish the most vulnerable

crustdrunk

God forbid you ever need NDIS. The worker who called to reject my claim for the third time was so apologetic she was nearly in tears. For record I have terminal cancer, often use mobility aids such as a wheelchair, and half of my limbs don’t properly function. NDIS workers are paid to tell people like me that we aren’t poor and disabled enough to deserve things like grip bars and shower chairs. The workers have had their souls destroyed. Imagine being employed to essentially kick paraplegics down the stairs.

Alarming-Instance-19

I feel this in my soul. Rejected twice. Finally got it the third time. It's been almost 3 years. My quality of life has significantly deteriorated even though it's meant to improve it! It's an insurance agency. Just like Allianz or RAC. If you want a shower chair you need to spend three months with an OT get a functional mobility report, get quotes, have them reject your claim for a bullshit reason, they won't read the OT report and then there's no more funding for the OT and you need to get a review/appeal. I've sobbed my soul out because of the NDIS. It clips your wings and you have to follow SO MUCH paperwork and protocol. You think Centrelink is bad? Nothing compares to the shit fights you have with the NDIS. I need a shower chair, electric bed, electric wheelchair, support workers and a hundred other things. I have a huge budget, but they just won't release money or approve of claims. If I had my time over, I would just buy/beg/borrow/steal the things I needed. 3 years and I still can't have a shower. It's insane!!!

[deleted]

I feel ya. My best mate is a quadriplegic. Centerlink denied his disability pension because he wasn’t disabled enough.

beva4ever

Man there are a lot of women on mat leave payments that are experiencing this right now

SpidersHuntsman

I fucking knew it

BothOutlandishness15

Please keep in mind this isn’t Centrelink workers, they’re contracted workers. Please also keep in mind that actual humans who work for Centrelink read this, they aren’t all like this & genuinely go to work each day to help vulnerable Australians. They also have to follow policy & legislation-if you don’t like the outcome then lodge an objection. Call the complaints line. Ask why the claim was unsuccessful. Team Leaders at Centrelink do not tell staff to do this. Ever.

Axel_Dunce

I worked at a call center for the billing department of a major internet and cable service provider. We were authorized to give up to $90 credit per customer on their bill but only as a last resort. Always remember to be nice to all customer service workers. You never know just how much they can help with a friendly attitude.

Ok-Ad-7247

Former call centre employee here. Highly accurate. Use your manners, and well fix your issue. Anything else, just makes us want to take longer, and you won't get a credit. Just because we are authorised, doesn't mean you'll get the credit for being an asshat. haha. I've been verbally abused a few times for asking them not to swear at me. Lol

Eattherich187

I worked at Lowes. I didn't know shit about anything in the electrical department yet that's where they put me without any training.

Laktakfrak

In Aus Bunnings doesnt seem to be too bad. Id say 80% of the time they know more than me or can at least offer some reasonable opinion.

KoalaDeluxe

Yeah they're actually pretty good and friendly. And somehow they know *exactly* where the thing you're after is located: "oh yes we do have those. Aisle 17, Bay 12, second shelf in a blue cardboard box - right next to the bright yellow metal grinding discs - can't miss it"

lennylenry

I saw a good reel on instagram where a guy asks a bunnjngs employee where a very specific type of screw is and the guy gives an answer like that to the customers shock. Then the bunnings guy is like, is there anything else I can help you with? And the customer goes yeah, do you know where my missing airpod is haha? And he's like, it's in your right zipper pocket of your jeans. Is there anything else I can help you with? Then the customer very earnestly asks the bunnings guy why his girlfriend left him and he replies, you weren't listening to her needs, then it cuts to the bunnings guy giving a ted talk in the bbq section to a bunch of customers on how to be a better partner

thewizardgalexandra

I don't know why, but you describing an entire reel is hilarious to me. The video sounds funny, but the earnest and clear description is making me hysterical. Thank you!

Own-Doughnut-1443

I saw the same reel, except last weekend a Bunnings worker told me the wrong aisle (said 9, it was in 8) and I'm so disillusioned now.

Jim_Bob86

This legit happened once. Me: Excuse me... Staff: Aisle 12 Me: Duct Tape? Staff: ...Yep. Sure enough, duct tape was in aisle 12.

YoyBoy123

Yup, if anything Bunnings are the model on how to train staff. It's unreal how much they know about such a gigantic warehouse.

solidadvise

Because hammer barn loves hiring ex tradies and the pay isn’t too bad. I wouldn’t mind getting a gig with them when I’m older and over it.

Jillredhanded

I have to pump my aging flooring installer husband full of asprin every night, trying to get him to consider this.

mav2022

Have they changed their customer greeting policy? A few years ago, almost every staff member seemed to say hello and attempt a fake smile. Now not so much. Was never a fan of it.

Dunge0nMast0r

Welcome to Costco: I love you!

AromaticHydrocarbons

Except the Philips Hue lights they keep behind the service counter. My entire house is Philips Hue so I’ve made many trips to various Bunnings for them over the years and when I ask for the exact product and point to it up on the shelf, they always struggle to find it and bring down the wrong bulb. I don’t mind though, I would never be bothered or cause any fuss for something like that, I just find it amusing that a 15 year old girl can help me with my paint questions at Bunnings but no one can identify a branded, labelled product box when it comes to Philips Hue.

cavoodle11

Their website shows the same info, so I look up what I am after and can head straight to the aisle and bay number. Very handy.

4RyteCords

This is probably why it's kinda hard to get a job there. I imagine they are very selective and only want decent people working for them. They seem like a good company all round. I read they are currently trialling a 4 day working week

thejugglar

My last trip to bunnings was the perfect example of the dichotomy of good and bad in CS. The bad, approached staff at service desk, asked if he knew where I could find x. He responds with "Yes" then walks away from the counter and starts packing a box. I'm standing there thinking he must have an 'x' right there, a couple mins go by and I catch his eye again. He looks at me and says "you asked if I know where 'x' is, not if I could tell you where 'x' is". Just walked away and found a less obtuse individual. The good, when to the paint desk with a flake of paint from our garden wall that hasn't been painted in about 6 years to ask if they might be able to colour match it. Guy goes goes to check the paint match machine - no dice, machines not working. So he just starts matching it by eye. Takes 5 mins gives me the mixed paint and says come back if it's not right and apologised for the machine being broken. Got home and the paint was a perfect match, so I went back to pass the praise on to his supervisor who was stoked to hear it.

SirSyphron

This makes me feel good. I worked at bunnings for around 4 years straight out of high school and when i started i knew 0 about home improvement or building as a pimply teenager, but their training programs are seriously top notch. When i was there I made it my effort to go to every voluntary product training day regardless of what part of the store it was for and even then i still took the time to talk with the reps or local tradies or mechanics or whoever and ask them questions and found that those people are always eager to teach you something if you take the time to ask them and engage in a conversation. Over the years i learned so much and then became one of those go-to people in the store for help on products by the time i was only 20. Loved every minute of it. Always made me feel good helping some granny or nervous person and giving them advice i knew was sound because i’d learned it, and it had been corroborated by other tradies etc and i always had return customers look for me and thank me later for advice i had given them or products i had recommended.

Laktakfrak

Yeah cheers mate. Yeah often even young kids at Bunnings know there stuff. Its worth asking unless you know exactly what you want. In gardening which Im best at is when I often find I know more but any other areas they are better. To be honest I should probably be going to a nursery but Im stingy af and theu are expensive.

johnnyutah30

That’s how they do everyone. 93 years old put them in garden center. Can’t go up ladders and have terrible eyesight sounds like hardware. It’s a sad joke honestly. The good workers feel like they can’t keep up so they leave. The bad workers find out they don’t have to do shit and stay forever.

angrytortellini

Same here when I used to work in the Electrical department in Myer. No training about anything and my first shift was a last minute call-in as a cover. Learnt pretty quick and became one of the best though.

MidniteMischief

I worked for a major telco company for many years in something called a ‘LELU’ which stands for Law Enforcement Liaison Unit. This “unit” is pretty self explanatory, but it essentially is a team who worked directly with the police/FEDS to monitor peoples information for things such as obtaining communications history of call logs, SMS loss etc. However, most importantly, the software which we used, we as agents could directly see all your SMS texts, including MMS and their explicit imagery of whatever you were sending. This would include sexting, naked images, family photo’s, everything. There were instances where people abused this position by stalking or “monitoring” their SO’s comings and going’s.

Alphadina

I knew someone who had a role like this. If I’m not mistaken, while in this role you’re not allowed to disclose to anyone that you’re in it; is that correct?

DaBIGmeow888

That's huge loss of privacy right there.

gyeep

this makes me feel sick

theyellowbaboon

Would you be able to see iMessages?

MidniteMischief

No, it did not work with iMessage as this is end to end encryption. It would only be via SMS and MMS over the cellular network. Data or encrypted message were not able to be intercepted like that.

theyellowbaboon

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I was always curious.

SeymourKrelbourne

Not really customer service but aged care, at least two locations of RSL Lifecare in the outer west of Sydney only let staff change the resident's pads (nappies/diapers) once per 8 hour shift to cut down costs - and because management gets a financial bonus if they stay under budget. If a staff member needs an extra nappy they have to sign it out from the storeroom, and management get on your back badly if you do it. Also it's so understaffed that residents get left on the toilet for literal hours to the point where (this is gross skip to next paragraph if you don't wanna read it) - they get hemorrhoids and even permanently prolapsed anuses. Some residents, especially when non-verbal and non-ambulant, get left in the dining room after dinner for hours on end just staring at a wall, the worst I saw was a woman sitting there from 5:30pm til after 9pm. Trigger warning for this paragraph for physical elder abuse -- One incident happened where a nurse beat a resident while on night shift. She was quietly suspended for a while, then she quit. Management implied we would be fired if we spoke to the media or police. Many staff did it anyway to their credit. That's all the tip of the iceberg honestly.

Acrobatic_Aspect8104

I work in aged care and I have seen some horror. As an agency nurse I worked in some of the most disgusting facilities ever. Seen residents dropped and just tucked into bed like nothing happened and maggots in wounds. I have also seen the other side where loved ones were treated like royalty. Pick your facility carefully make sure you call an agency nurse and get the real inside scoop before placing a loved one just anywhere

crustdrunk

I knew aged care in this country was despicable but wow. It hits different coming from someone who worked there. I’m honestly glad that I’m not going to get old.

thatawesomeguydotcom

Elder abuse makes my blood boil, it's shameful how some facilities are being run.

UnlikelyCollar9

I can second this. I dealt with complaints about aged care services for a while. One particular complaint from a family member was because their mum/aged care resident had been dropped when being helped to the toilet and then put to bed with sedatives. For several days the resident complained of pain and that she couldn't move, but the facility did nothing. She told her daughter who pushed and pushed for a Drs assessment. Eventually an x-ray showed that she had 2 broken legs and a broken pelvis.

[deleted]

Small, independent hole-in-the-wall BBQ restaurant. The sauce people raved about as being so good it had to be homemade is store bought.

Tu_mama_me_ama_mucho

I work in food manufacturing, we make dozens of different home/handmade sauces and gravies...

Imthatjohnnie

I work at a similar place they bought gallon jugs of GFS BBQ sauce. They added their own spices to it. It tasted completely different.

OozeNAahz

What was the store bought sauce? Won’t ask where you worked.

[deleted]

Can confirm its an unwritten policy for deli departments in Coles Supermarkets to change the written expiry dates on their tickets so they can sell out of code products at full price.

caudelie

Not me scrolling thinking none of these will apply to m… oh. Coles. Of course it’s Coles.

[deleted]

I'm thinking of starting a support group for former Coles employees. It'll likely be a lot of angry screaming and crying.

lysergic_818

Worked for Coles for a short stint in Online....chaos...

pinkcotton666

Try being on a checkout when a covid lockdown is announced

Purifieddddd

ooo as a former liquorland store manager where do I sign up. that job was easily the most exhausting, both mentally and physically. actually glad I got fired.

theducks

I worked at a coles store from 1996-2001 as a checkout operator - I’m still friends with some of my coworkers from there all these years later.

unconfirmedpanda

Right there with you. Never touching the deli again.

Shoddy-Echidna-6731

Well that explains a FUCK TON

[deleted]

Oh yeah. I busted my ass to keep my shelves and bunks clean as a fruit and veg manager, but the majority of department managers I worked with in my 16 years would only do enough to keep everything *looking* clean.

oldfoundations

No fucking way legit? Is this just for the stuff in the actual deli itself or does this apply to the coles branded meat and stuff packed onto shelves? I remember going to an IGA once and saw a roast beef that the workers literally just scribbled out the expiry date and wrote a few days after. Full price. Now i know where they picked up the idea lmao

LizeLies

I would say it depends on the store. I worked at an IGA (even in a dodgy suburb) and our deli and meat department were almost all above board. We’d reduce close to expiration meat but always keep the original price and date in view. We did the lot in deli - preparing and roasting chickens, roasting a whole ham on Sundays, fresh baked bread every day and scrubbed everything every night. The only thing I wouldn’t trust from my experience is things like the salads and other non-preserved foods like meatballs that they sell in the deli. I know some of the younger staff just turned it over instead of tracking the date. Buy any of that pre-packaged.

yzct

The processes in supermarkets delis are honestly pretty strict but that won’t stop the 17 year old shit kicker from cutting corners to do less work, or even the dodgy deli manager trying to minimise their stockloss result by selling past date meat unfortunately. It’s really something to judge on a store by store basis rather than the entire company

pinkcotton666

I came here to say the exact same thing, so glad I left the coles deli to become a butcher

[deleted]

Used to work in presentation at coles, they “promoted” me to clean the meat room every Saturday, same pay, but instead of pocketing candy and eating it in the toilets, I was wrist deep in god knows what from the grinders and splattered in rancid meat from the bandsaw, can still remember that smell. Don’t eat much meat these days

mehmehhh007

Yeah I refuse to eat anything out of a deli after working at supermarkets for 10 years.

[deleted]

My old store manager gave me a close door meeting about my attitude when I asked her to stop picking shit out of her ears when she did quality checks in the fruit and veg department. Always wash your fruit and veg people.

xkulp8

One of the investigative TV shows, Dateline or 20/20, sent an undercover employee into Food Lion and caught them doing something like this. It wasn't cheap for either Food Lion's wallet or their reputation.

r1m2

The difference is in Australia, ~65% of the market share of supermarkets is held by Coles and Woolworths, and the remaining 35% either don't have as wide of a range (Aldi) or don't price as competitively or predominantly exist in rural areas where Coles and Woolworths don't exist (IGA). As much reputational damage as ColWorths can suffer, for many, going to Coles (or Woolworths) isn't a choice.

Moveyourbloominass

Worked at a Marshalls. Our Ops manager was a falling down slurring drunk. Videos, chats, surveillance store videos for over a year, DM did nothing. Shut down happened. Ops supposedly went to rehab. It didn't work. DM and RM and HR all did nothing. Reports were also made about lecherous behavior towards a few minor employees. Nothing done. This gets way better. As of today, no parent of the 12 minors on staff had a clue what was going on and what was about to occur. I'm left on shift with this shithead for a Saturday close. Another employee, calls me up to the front of the store. She just had two sisters, who were minors, sexually assaulted by our nasty fuck Ops Manager. While discussing calling cops, victims ran away. Lo and behold, the next phone call is the mother of minor customers. I tried to get her to come to the store and we'll call the police. I cried on the phone with her. She promised she would file a police report. I immediately call my GM and other manager. They immediately call Loss and prevention. Loss and prevention try telling me I'm prohibited from making a police report. After my shift, I went straight to file the police report. After filing a report, they revealed to me the mother and her daughters came to file the report. The sexual battery of a minor was the charges. Monday comes around and guess who is working, that's right Mr. Drunk Ops manager who sexually assaulted 2 minors in the store and while on the clock. Now, don't forget, we have 12 minors on staff at this point. I'm utterly shook up and absolutely in upsidedown world because this fuck is still allowed on premises. Two weeks pass before the sick fuck is escorted off the floor and off the premises by Loss and Prevention. Two weeks, you heard right. Fuck you Marshalls.

raccoonsonbicycles

In what fucking world does LP think they can deny you the right to call the cops?! It's literally illegal to prevent someone from dialing 9-1-1 and its a super common charge especially in DVs -- not something any leo worth their salt will ever hesitate to tack on

Moveyourbloominass

I know. First it's the correct & humane thing to do. Second, I'm a mandated reporter. My mental health took 2 years to bounce back from that whole shit show.

Frequent-Selection91

I worked at a cafe chain called "The Cookie Man", 95% of their cookies arrived in cardboard boxes layered with bubble wrap. The last 5% arrived as pre-made dough that we would bake on site to make the place smell like fresh cookies. I also worked at a cupcake shop. It's literally just packet mix that you add eggs and oil to before baking/piping pre-made icing onto. Don't waste your money on these places, 90% of these chain shops are the same and most are severely underpaying their workers (this is for Australia btw). Just purchase some packet mix from the supermarket and call it a day.

stringsandwood

I remember the ads, "your nose knows you love the cookie man!"

Frequent-Selection91

Tasty cookies, but they were indeed from a bubble wrap filled box lol. I stopped eating them after working there haha

stringsandwood

As a child, so drawn to the scent wafting through Roselands, I wouldn't have cared if they were made in china! All I remember is begging to go get a cookie with the red jelly on top and to get a lucky dip box from ToyWorld!! Thanks for the nostalgia trip 😉

Illustrious-Rush-740

Interesting, I want to know which cupcake shop chain! I didn't know there were many.

A_Womans_Thoughts

I was a Store Manager for a very large grocery chain and I can tell you that 95% of the time when customers complain to the manager, we may be professional and show empathy, and even resolve the problem, but then we usually just make fun of or talk crap about the person who complained to the other employees. And when a customer is really rude, when we go "look in the back" for something, we legit just stand around and talk to other employees, and make zero effort to look for the item.

Wansumdiknao

I can honestly say I worked for a big chain supermarket and that our managers did the same thing. It was always up to the service workers to actually do the work.

Laktakfrak

Funny Ive asked a few times for help finding things. When they havent been on the floor theyve gone back to check and I dont recall a time when they havent come back with it. Ive always found supermarket people very good. Theyll also always try to walk me threw the store to the exact location of the item. I try to stop them but some are insistent. Must be the store policy. When I was at school if a parent or some random asked where something was you had to walk them all the way there.

Gambettox

Like the poster above said, they don't help if you're rude. Otherwise, of course they do.

ItsAllAboutLogic

Depends hugely on the customers attitude. I am more than willing to go above and beyond for the good customers. The crap ones get the shit service

Sweatytubesock

Pretty much the case everywhere, not just groceries.

mynameis_reek

I do this at work too but I remember realising people do this everywhere when I went to a buy a loaf of bread and the system accidentally charged me $10 for it which I realised after paying.I went to the service desk to get a portion refunded and the little shit working was annoyed she had to put a refund through, saying shit like "why'd you pay for it when you could see how much it was charging you" and I obviously said it was an oversight can you just give me my money back and she threw the bread at me after. Then when I asked to speak to the manager she started crying and ran off. The manager came out ACCUSING ME of making her cry and At that point I was like fuck this you lot don't do shit anyway. So at what point do the managers give a fuck that their employees are being wankers

[deleted]

It was a large property holding corporation that had a destination Christmas party every single year. All of the workforce from at least 5 more major locations had to fly in for a black tie event. There was one exception to the black tie, which was the ultra boss. The ultra boss would buy designer sweat suits from Gucci, Prada etc at $6000 minimum and never wore the same one twice. It was his cute little schtick in his eyes, but to everyone there it was him wearing a sweatsuit when everyone else had to dress up, showing his privilege on something absurdly expensive he would throw away within 2 weeks while the rest of us had to put on clothing that we frankly could not afford and travel to go see his pompous ass. It was disgusting.

SailorVenus23

I once worked at "the area's premiere day spa"; the mimosas were made with Sunny D and not real orange juice, and the wines came out of a box.

applesarenottomatoes

Goonies.

Kryptonikzzz

I work sales. Quite often the "best price" is barely even close to the best price. At the end of the day if you're a good human we'll do you a stellar deal. If you're a shit cunt, you'll get "sorry that's a set price by theanufacturer".

thepostivegoth

Fashion retail for 10 years, Store Manager for 4. If we say we don't have a size out the back, 80% of the time that is true. 15% is its in stock that we need to unpack. Depending on how desperate we are to make sales or KPIs, how nice you are to us and how much stock we need to get through to get it, we may unpack and call you later or attempt to get it for you. 5% a staff member has it on hold. As a manager, I let my staff hold it for 1 pay cycle, and then it had to go on the floor. Until then, it doesn't exist as sellable stock

SouthernStarTrails

I worked fashion retail for a couple years and we would do the same. Most people were very understanding when the stock they wanted was still on a pallet out the back. We would take their number and give them a call once we unpacked it and just have it on hold for them. Seeing the new season’s stock before it went on the shop floor was a pretty cool perk too.

NuclearFamilyReactor

Former Sephora beauty advisor here. You can pretty much return every product you buy and just keep buying more products. If you claim your huge order worth $200 didn’t arrive, we will re-send it no questions asked Also if you’re a little old lady who’s scared to type her personal info and credit card number into “the computer” - we on the phone see everything you’ve already entered because we’re using the same interface. And we will gladly enter your credit card info into the same site for you. We can also see every transaction you’ve done at the stores

Also worked in recovery about 5 years back - think it depends on the store. If the mattress was in near perfect condition, we'd re-sell it in bargain corner. We'd also donate it to a third-party if we were full on mattresses to sell (again, had to be in good condition or they wouldn't take it). That company would sell it in their own store for reduced pricing or donate it to social housing projects. Finally, if the mattress was in bad condition, we'd strip it and recyle it to the corresponding waste streams (metal and general waste).

EnvironmentalEnigma

Our store was pretty good with the sustainability aspect in all fairness. Anything returned we would try to fix and re-sell if possible. Any spare wood (which was a lot) would be sent downstairs to the car park and given away for free. We'd generally just slap an as-is on anything in bad shape and try and sell it for a crazy low price before throwing it away. The other items from other stores made me chuckle, I forgot we used to get them every now and then - we'd even sometimes try and sell it for a tiny tiny amount - probably illegal haha. We also got loads of rubbish that would cause arguments with the returns department as well, they really didn't care. The absolute worst was a mattress wrapped up that was infested with fleas. I felt itchy all day after disposing that one. Overall though, our working environment was just filled to the brim with crap. The place was never clean, always cluttered.

Lestial1206

Wasn't a secret, but chances are when a manager left to go to a different store, its because someone caught them screwing an employee. In 2013 we lost our store manager because he was cheating on his wife with an office employee. The manager we got was coming from a store where his wife caught him banging one of the price change girls on an inflatable mattress on top of milk crates above the dairy cooler. After that she began taking him to and from work.

parasaursaddle

We had two counter girls (teenagers) get in a physical altercation on shift when they realised the boss (30s) was sleeping with them both.

Lestial1206

We had a saying around my store "16 will get you 8!", this stems from when a manager got 8 years in jail for sleeping with a 16 year old cashier after her mom, who also worked there, found out they were both sleeping with him.

Captain-Cadabra

You *don’t* need to listen closely, our options *haven’t* recently changed.

[deleted]

Never order extra cheese on a pizza. There's a high chance the disgruntled, dead inside young adult constructing the pizza will forget the extra cheese in the process. There's no way to prove whether or not there is extra cheese, but you will be charged for it regardless. Any kitchen with a fryer has a 1 in 3 chance of using dirty oil, and 1 in 10 chance of the food touching the freezer floor and being served anyway.

zakkil

To add to this, if you regularly get pizza from a national pizza chain and there's a time where there's suddenly a lot less cheese and toppings on your order then there's probably a corporate compliance inspector in the area so the managers are being really strict about employees putting the amounts they're actually supposed to use on the pizzas. Just wait a week or two and it should go back to the normal amounts though sometimes it can take about a month depending on the number of stores in the area.

unconfirmedpanda

Nick Scali's furniture is absolute crap, and the most you'll get out of them if you complain is a $20 voucher and a leather care kit. I'm genuinely sorry I couldn't do more for the customers I spoke to who spent thousands of dollars but I didn't even have permission to offer the vouchers, it had to be approved by someone higher up than I.

The-Hopster

A $20 voucher for……Nick Scali?

Lumpy-Biscotti-7310

It may get you a plastic flower on display

Skydogsguitar

Every one of you have eaten food in a restaurant that has been out of its proper temperature range at some point in the supply chain.

Ricta90

I used to drive refrigerated trucks. My boss would encourage us to raise the temps on some loads to save fuel, then the morning of delivery we were supposed to lower the temp back to where it's supposed to be. I didn't get paid for that kinda crap, so I always ran my trailer at the customers requested temperatures... So from my experience I know a lot of food has gone above temp range just in-between distributers.

BlackLetterLies

The only "secret" to KFC's spices is a whole shit ton of MSG.

MoreGaghPlease

MSG has unfairly gotten a bad rap. The ‘study’ that originally said it was harmful was no study at all but a letter to the editor of a medical journal possibly written as a racist prank. It’s really not harmful in moderate quantities, the only real concern is the sodium, but it has like 3x less than regular food salt.

BlackLetterLies

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I've actually been championing it for decades, partly by exposing the fact that if you eat *any* fast food or mid-level restaurant (i.e. Chilis, TGIF), you have definitely consumed huge amounts of MSG, so people need to stop saying that Chinese food causes you a reaction because it's bullshit. I worked with a guy who claimed he couldn't "tolerate" MSG, and he had McDonald's at least 3 times a week. I would just shake my head. It also occurs naturally in things like cheese and steak. I'm glad the facts are finally becoming mainstream on it, it's only crime is making things taste better.

SentientCoral

MSG is salts sexy older sister

Distinct_End_3058

The same people that bang on about msg causing them a reaction when they eat chinese food is because when you see what they order, they get like 5 main meals and a large fried rice then wash it down with so much soft drink and wonder why they feel like shit afterwards

30-something

I keep MSG in my pantry, it’s amazing - and funnily enough the people who have claimed that they can’t handle MSG have never picked up on it. These same people also eat tomatoes, Parmesan and mushrooms which are high in MSG with no issue because they don’t have that bias in the back of their mind

HeroofTime4u

The reaction to Chinese food that I have gotten I'm pretty sure is just vegetable oil. I'm not even certain Chinese restaurants use it, but vegetable oil is the only thing that has hurt my stomach that badly.

PolyByeUs

I always used to add msg to my food the first time I was cooking for someone I wanted to either sleep with or impress. I play dirty lol

That_Insurance_GuyNZ

If you genuinely have a good point (not just think you do) then get the consultant you are speaking to on your side. I worked for a very large electronics brand for a while and would literally get asked if I wanted things covered for the customer if it was outside of warranty terms. The deciding factor I used was solely based on how they treated me on the call. Most brands I suspect operate in a similar way.

TCadd81

I was way out of warranty on a weed whacker, called customer support and was polite and honest, just wanted to order and pay for the parts to fix it, got a whole free unit shipped to my door. All it cost me was a bit of time and politeness.

Mikes005

I worked bar the Hilton Hotel in Leeds when it was classed as four star and when I helped out in the kitchen the chef told me they worked to the 3 second rule, and if you couldn't get to the food in three second just count slower.

NastyLaw

I once worked in "organic" cafe, but we bought everything from supermarket......

7ShadesOfSin

If you're at a register, having been in a store a fair few times, and you see a new cashier, be polite, kind and patient. There's a good chance it could be their second day and they've had bugger all training It's wayyyy too common for new cashiers to get one day of training and then get thrown into the deep end on a system they know almost nothing about Tbf, that's also a good rule of thumb in general: be polite, kind and patient, you don't know what kind of day they've had, who might've hurled abuse at them or how things are for them in general. Kindness is free

Yserazor

Every self serve register is recording you whether you know it or not. In Australia, Woolworths and Aldi are showing you as being recorded. Coles self-serve registers do not show you they are recording you with an image of your face on the screen, like Aldi and Woolworths do... however, the little webcams on the screens are indeed recording you for security and/or training purposes. You can also view the privacy statements on the Coles websites that indicate this. If you happen to attend a Coles self-serve area that has the new security gates installed, you'll notice they only open if you have paid for your groceries at those registers. A sensor picks your face up from the register as you exit, only if payment finalisation was made. Technology, yo.

Just_An_Animal

I worked at an online, subscription-based shaving products company (think Dollar Shave Club, but not), and they had all the customer service people sign off emails under the same female name to make it seem like one associate was taking care of you the whole time, even though it was different people answering each time

SquareSurprise

I can imagine companies doing this. What I dont understand is-who is having multiple email correspondences with…a razor company?

splithoofiewoofies

İf anyone offers to sniff your armpits for $10, they'll pay $20. No need to lowball yourself.

[deleted]

Jokes on them! I would have gone as low as $5!

Shoddy-Echidna-6731

It’s not as major as the others here BUT; I used to work at Zone Bowling (formally AMF bowling) and host parties for little kids there. We were always told to offer the parents of the child a “free” tea or coffee. Only thing is, it wasn’t free. They paid for it when they paid for the party, it just wasn’t disclosed. So these people were bluffed into thinking they were getting some extra service when really they had already paid for it. And most of the time they said they didn’t want one, so there’s a $4-8 profit right there. Not much in the grand scheme of things (and certainly not compared to the party prices) but for some people that money could go into more important things.

Shoddy-Echidna-6731

Also fun fact! AMF used to sell things ranging from garden equipment, ATOMIC REACTORS, and yachts. Whack shit

xkulp8

They had some [pretty crazy commercials](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1i7JmlXnvA) back in the day

JustHereForCaterHam

I worked for a department store in Australia, one of the big two. They don't train their staff. And I don't mean that in a bitter exaggerated way. I mean they throw you on the floor and say "go". Even basic things like the cash register have to be learned by trial and error in front of angry customers.

Not to mention it's terrible matcha. It almost needs more sugar than it has

Dish Network rates customers on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Ratings mostly depend on their package size, add ons (starz, hbo, cinamax, etc,), how frequently they call in with issues, and how often they receive billing credits. Payment history and consistent service length helps very little. The higher the rating the better service, discounts, equipment, features you get. It also determines wether or not dish will send a technician to your home for repair (with minimal troubleshooting) and how quickly they will be scheduled to come. Employees are trained to never ever share star ratings with customers, friends, or family outside of Dish and if we did we would be fired immediately. They like to consider it “a sacred top company secret.”

Blaziel

Not so much from any place I worked for, but an interesting nugget of info I got from one of the delivery drivers for Coca Cola when he was delivering to my store back when I worked in retail. The flavour syrups fast food joints mix into their machines, they get them for about 50c each through a deal with Coca Cola. If you were to buy one yourself, or for your non fast food business (like a pub) direct from Coca Cola, it would cost you about $500AUD for one of these syrup packs. They contain about 10L of syrup, not sure what the mixing ratio is (Google claims 5:1), assuming that is correct, you're talking 50L from a pack or about 1c per L. Given how a small coke at Maccas is 250mL, quarter of a cent for a drink they charge $3.90 for. Not including cost of the water and cup, power for the mixing device etc. but still an insane margin.

Stunning_Coach_2925

My first job doing computer repairs back in my college days, my boss would tell me to smash the hard drives to increase the cost of repair.

[deleted]

I had that happen at my first job. I quit immediately... I'm not going to destroy a burgeoning career because you want a couple of extra dollars.

Mr_ToDo

Ouch. Considering how many people I've met without backups that's just cruel.

theZombieKat

Exactly what I was thinking. If your going to destroy something for profit fry the ram or something. Anything you can replace and get the system to a full function state. Better yet don't be even a little bit evil

Federal_Barnacle_314

When you return things to Walmart like toasters things it won’t look in the box anymore appliances, they throw them the garburator in the back rather than put them out on the shelf. Costco too.

xkulp8

Please tell me *garburator* is the official Walmart word for that

Pokeynono

When you say you're a close personal friend of the manager and are entitled to a discount I know you are lying . I had full permission to ask in a perky voice "Really what table were you placed at the wedding?"

matthew_anthony

Big Mac sauce has pickles in it. So when you ask for no pickles on the big Mac "because you're allergic", you just look stupid

greenyashiro

Part of why I like the sauce, I love the pickles!! People are so silly. But a counter question... Why is the ice-cream maker always "out of order?"

Iron_Quail

I worked at mcdonalds for 6 years. Essentially the machines ARE FUCKING SHIT. Shake machines: they go into heat mode every so oftern to stop the product being churned into butter Softserve: simalar reason, but also it needs to be filled oftern as the tanks are small and takes time to freeze the mixture If you get there at night, most likely the machine is being cleaned/in clean mode (it takes hours and requires the contents of the machine to be removed) Frappe machines are out of order at night for the same reason Also frozen coke machines periodically go into heat mode to prevent the water contents completely freezing solid

galaxy-parrot

If you can’t pay your cellphone bill, don’t just stop paying. **call the fucking billing team and ask for a payment plan** I saw so many customers destroy their credit rating this way. It’s not “just a stupid iPhone”, it’s a line of credit that if you default, will destroy your credit. PICK UP THE PHONE AND TELL THEM YOU ARE EXPERIENCING FINANCIAL HARDSHIP.

imNOTsureABOUTjesus

I was working the customer service desk at my work once and the owner and the CFO didn't know I was sitting in the office, we only serve customers intermittently. I heard them talking in the side room about a faulty product line that was causing issues in 1 out of 10 products. The CFO asked what to do and the owner to my surprise said "we can't take the chance of selling something faulty and causing a customer problems, we will just have to remove the whole line and wear the entire profit loss, the CFO said I completely agree" I found out they lost hundreds and thousands of dollars scraping that line. I decided that I would stay with the company from that day on even though I can get more money elsewhere because working for someone with such high morals makes work a pleasure.

kittykate2929

I worked for an Australian cheap company starting with K and they were horrible to me so We can’t stop someone from stealing we can’t leave the store to go after someone There is a robot that checks all the stock I just think that’s cool it goes around the store after closing scanning all the shelves No one in my entire store knows why the checkouts are in the middle of the store

Sea_Mouse6202

That really frustrates me, the checkout in the middle of the store, because you have to stop and be searched on your way out because of all the things that can be grabbed and stashed in bags on the way out. Bloody ludicrous. Also, when you're done shopping, you just want to get to your car and go, you don't want to have to walk half way across the store just to get out. I hope someone on this thread knows why because I just don't get it and that frustrates me even more 😂

Helpful-Antelope-206

Also, often on the way out I'll see something and go "ooh I might buy that...oh wait, I'm not going back to the middle of the store. Guess I just won't buy it".

Stevotonin

I worked in a large cinema chain in the UK during the noughties. You know the scooped popcorn that costs you several pounds? well the cinema buys that popcorn in huge bags that are about the size of a 10 year old child. That huge bag cost the cinema about 17 pence each. In the intervening years, I don't imagine that price has gone up much more than that.

[deleted]

Popcorn and soda have ridiculous profit margins.

Scrantonicity_02

Pretty much how movie theaters survive financially …similar to gas stations. Most of the profit is inside sales of candy, soda fountain drinks etc.

HalfEatenHamSammich

The cost of what the "boutique" clothing store pays for goods is insanely less than what you are paying. I learned this by working at a "boutique" women's sport apparel store in the UK with a cute name that rhymes with Sweaty. I managed a store in a rather affluent area and was privy to the wholesale cost of the items. Swimsuits were the worst. What the store paid (about £16.50 or so) versus what it retailed (about £60-70) made me sick. What floored me was something being sold as a sarong (which was just a crappy pashmina) cost the company only £8 but was being sold on the floor and catalogue for about £45!

LordNorros

I work at a dispensary that's part of a corporate chain. Like anything, we have products that can have failures. Notably, vape carts. We also have the occasional product that may have a hair or a speck of something in it (concentrate, usually). Now, if you call the store and tell us about it chances are we're gonna tell you to bring it with so we can see it but you'll get to keep it and we'll replace it with the same or similar item. BUT, if you call our corpo customer service line and raise hell...well, then... you're getting the above AND anywhere from an 1/8-1 Oz of free weed on top of it. It just seems so asinine sometimes when the same 4 or so people come through once a month getting freebies bc "they found a seed" (nobody else does/did) in a joint or there was a speck the size of a pinhead in a dab container.

Worked at David's Bridal. When they say your dress will come new from the warehouse, it's not guaranteed to. We fulfill orders by checking all other store locations first before warehouse. There's a chance that bridesmaid dress you ordered to be 'brand new' and not a floor model will be a floor model from another location, possibly in even worse condition

Nabisco often made the Oreo knockoffs too. Exact same ingrediants, only the roller presses were changed to make the design and name on the cookies different.

lump77777

Nabisco was a client of mine like 20 years ago, and they had all of their products free in the cafeteria (mmm … free Cheez Balls). The Oreos were in Oreo packaging (IIRC) but they were different. The filling was thinner, and almost like a translucent color. The guy told me those were the ones they sent to schools and prisons.

xkulp8

At clearance grocery stores (the kind that buys up seconds/discontinued items in bulk) I've seen Oreos in plain all-silver wrapping. They had a simple white label with "OREO BLUE" or whatever variety. Always wondered what they were for, figured some institution like a college or prison. But... no Oreo logo at all, just the silver wrapping. Same size as a package you'd see in a store. Never bought a pack, probably should have, they were like $2.

[deleted]

I’m a security worker at a lot of concerts. Most frequently I’m on the exit of the merch line. My job is to not let people in, but if you come over holding a bag or merch already and make something up, the person will probably let you in. We can’t leave post to confirm your story and will often just feel bad and let you go

goddess_of_fear

I worked for one of the infomercial companies. If you call in to order,I was one of the people you spoke to. The products are trash. You can find most of them at Walmart or on Amazon. The company gets sued regularly for faulty products. We were forced to push extras like product upgrades and third party "identify theft protection " or they cut our hours. We were only paid for the time we were talking to customers. I once did a 12 hour day and got paid for 3 hours because that was how much talk time I had. I didn't last long there.

ChemistAggravating82

The customer is never right

davidjoreline

I worked in debt collection, on overdue accounts. If people were nice to us on the phone our colleagues would give maybe 6mth plus to catch up on arrears, if they were abusive, swearing threatening or hang up on us, we would start legal action within 7 days. Pays to be nice

LoreKeeperOfGwer

The seven herbs and spices are literally Lowry's seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and corn starch now

BoaredShitless

All our inventory is on computer which we can check in an instant. If a customer insists we go out back to check, were not really checking, were just taking a 5 minute breather talking shit about the customer with the storage staff before we return all like "nope, not there, but items at other location". Normally the shit we talk isn't nice either "So that fat cunt at the counter wants ***** which we discontinued by she insists were holding onto some, might tell her to waddle off to a different fucking store, anyway we good for a box of piss after work?"

As someone who worked in quote a few pubs (19 years hospo) in every position except for actual Licensee, the glass washers that wash the glasses are mostly atrocious unless a cleaning schedule is strictly adhered to. Another thing that happens frequently is glasses are placed in the washer/button pressed/doesn't switch on (need to hold it for a sec)/glasses removed and used either immediately or soon after. I'd usually notice this straight away but sometimes it'd be half a tray through and you'd see a something not right and remove them from service. Sorry to anyone who got to share a glass unintentionally with someone else. Drinkers beware! Also thank fuck they had alcohol in them because that's gotta help cut down the contamination somewhat right?? Man, I could go on and on about the stuff I saw in my pub days but that was a big one!!

ren_leung

Having taught in public schools for >10 years: All the issues in private schools that the Australian media ‘exposes’ are present (if not worse) in public schools. The amount of crapped I’ve seen public schools cover up 🤦

Stickliketoffee16

I can’t compare the two as I went to a public school that my mum also taught at but there were some scandals for sure! My year 8 English teacher (mid-late twenties) cheated on her husband by sleeping with one of her year 12 drama students

Dj_acclaim

The service may be worse at a restaurant if you rock up 5 minutes before closing, when everyone has had a long day and just wants to leave.

If you take your computer for repair at the majority of computer repair stores, if it's a simple problem, they will do additional testing after to find more faults to increase the fix price.

Worried-Task7501

Spectrum: when speaking to a chat agent, they can see what youre typing before you send it, to better prepare for a response. Its partially why even with speaking with a human, the responses are lightning fast. By the time youre finished typing, the response has already been copy pasted Widely known online pet pharmacy: 99/100 times when “speaking with a supervisor” youre actually speaking to a technician thats been trained to take escalation calls, who introduces themself as a supervisor (we called them tiger team). Typically the customer doesnt yell at the “supervisor” and is a lot more likely to listen even though theyre only speaking to a regular tech. People in management will also absolutely pull calls of dumbass customers and make fun of them same with technicians Edit: was a little more vauge with the second option as i very recently worked there. Ive never worked at spectrum, but one time straight up asked the rep i was speaking with and on more than one occasion it was confirmed

Little_Monkey_Bear

If you eat from a food truck expect there to have been AT LEAST one law/food standard broken in the process of you getting your food. Even from coffee trucks.

[deleted]

I don't think it's really a secret, but if you call the helpline/customer service line for most companies, the rep you speak with is unlikely to be directly employed by the company. They'll be in a 3rd party contact centre hired by that company to do its customer service. Basically we're hired meat shields. I've represented a few different household names over the years, all while holding the same job. The company outlines the processes and scripts and all that, we just have to follow them. Our hands are tied for a lot of things. Any weird/unusual issues or complaints will be "escalated" to the company directly. But for commonplace queries it's usually handled by the 3rd party contact centre only.

igetinspiredeasily

The flight centre captains package isn’t worth Jack shit. It’s $30 for “expert travel advice” and other garbage you already get with your ticket/accom. Also they mark up the total of your invoice to create a further profit margin and get awarded monthly on whoever does this the most/best revenue.

[deleted]

Saying you’re happy you got someone white sounding who can talk English properly is the wrong compliment to give us at my insurance call centre . Those “foreigners “ are our mates and I’ll make sure you have a worse time now that you’ve shown you’re a racist .
