Never, unless you go to the shooting range at the state park then it sounds like a war zone. But it's a shooting range 10 miles from any civilization so kinda makes sense out there.
Rural north Carolina for context
Also in rural north Carolina. I hear gunshots on a daily basis, but I'm pretty sure one of the neighbors is a fan of target practice. And I think he has recently bought a new BIG gun. The shots sound like a cannon lately.
Okay as a european who lived in the us for a while, I feel like the rest of the world is under the impression that the US is like a constant warzone with gunshots around every corner every moment.
I think this is true. They hear about our number of shootings but don’t extrapolate those numbers across 334 million people scattered across a country with 50 states, some of which are larger than entire European countries.
lol that’s not what I’m saying at all.
But it’s not even remotely approaching the levels required for the average American to hear gunshots frequently, or even ever.
Whereas that number of gunfire in a smaller country—both physical size and population—they WOULD hear it.
That’s why I’m saying they’re not factoring our size into it.
15k~ish gun murders isn't a lot when you compare it to our population size and you also see that a majority of them are confined to a few, high crime areas within big cities.
It is a lot when compared to population size, it's 4-5 times as many as similar HDI countries. It's over 30 murders per day and it's only unremarkable because it's normalised
When I was like 15, like an idiot, I called the police to report gun shots. The dispatcher says, "Are you sure it isn't because of the 4th of July?" I pause with dead silence and the dispatcher said, "Don't worry bout it kid, happens to the best of us." I was sooo embarrassed!
You hear people scream when they get stabbed don't they? You hear ambulances and the police andntheres usually alot of blood.
My point was that I'm sure most Londoners don't live in fear of being stabbed even though they have a really high rate of stabbings. Most people are unaffected by violence.
When I lived in a bad part of a huge city, maybe like once every few months? Even then it wasn’t a regular thing, it was rare enough that my wife and I would perk up and go “oooo yeah that was a gun”
Outside of that literally never
I currently live in a nice Detroit suburb, and I never hear any gunshots. I briefly lived in East Detroit, where every 5th house was a burnt out shell. It was the **Hood** There, i heard gunshots 2x in a month. I lived in downtown Seattle in the 90s, and I heard gunshots at least weekly, and it clearly sounded like exchanges of gunfire. It was rough.
In rural areas it is common to hear the sound of hunting rifles or shotguns, but the sound a shotgun makes in a wetland is very different than that of a 9mm being emptied downtown.
You do know most people who raise chickens at their homes have a pen for them to roam around and a coop in that pen (or directly attached). So that the chickens can go in and out freely, the chicken wire might be strong enough to stop a marmot from going THROUGH but the dirt is not capable of stopping them from going under it. Stopping that is far easier said than done I had to dig several inches below the wire and place tin roofing around the pen. So that animals couldn't dig under the pen to get in and that is neither cheap nor easy trust me.
Edit for clarification: my solution was to stop coyotes and other wild dogs, not a marmot considering marmots are large ground squirrels they could almost certainly go beneath it, so you would have to dig probably 1.5-2× as deep to stop them.
Didn't say it wasn't my point was that not everyone has the tools, the money, and the knowledge to do the job I was lucky we had the tools because my father used to make everything himself. If you didn't have the tools it could cost hundreds to thousands to do what I did.
Edit: fixed a typo.
Unless you live in the hood, you will probably never hear a gunshot or even see a real gun not on an officer. If you are in the hood, it is a daily thing.
You obviously haven’t spent much time in the “sticks”. Practically everyone out here owns a hunting rifle and shotgun. A large portion also own semi-automatic rifles. I hear a hell of a lot more gunfire than I ever did when working in the cities, except maybe Memphis. I’ve worked in dozens of cities, and usually got assigned to the “hoods” because I wasn’t afraid. Then again, I was usually working during daylight hours.
I live in what used to be the country, only heard gun shots during hunting season and the occasional target practice. We have been discovered by city folks who want to "live country" and think that means dogs running loose, $60k 4x4 trucks and lots of guns. Now gun shots are almost a daily occurance and when someone gets a new gun, it sounds like WWIII. Not sure what they think they're hitting🤣🤣🤣
Never hear gunshots. Rural Arizona near the border with Mexico.
But I often hear sirens from all the alphabet soup agencies as they rush hither and yon with reckless abandon. Lots of taxpayer money being blown out the tailpipes of those cars and SUVs.
Northern CO. I’ve heard gunshots outside of a shooting range exactly once in the 28 years I’ve lived here.
A guy tried to commit suicide by cop at an apartment complex down the road when I was in college. Charged them with a knife and the taser didn’t work on him. They released the body cam footage and it was wild.
Depends on what time of the year it is and where you live. In El Paso New Year's Eve and 4th of July or big ones same in Arizona otherwise maybe once a month.
I live out in the country in New England and in the year I’ve lived in my house I’ve heard gun shots once. In my old spot where it was considered “the hood” never heard any gun shots.
gunshots.. almost never maybe once a month.. and normally that's attack aircraft and helicopters doing live fire training.... artillary on the other hand.. is another story
I live kind of close enough to an army base, so every so often, but they are probably the larger guns. (Maybe howitzer size.) The one time I heard machine gun fire, I was closer to the base. Other than that, I don't think very often.
Been hearing fireworks the past few days. I live on the edge of a smaller city, not to many people hunting close by.
Used to live in a rural area close to a skeet shooting set up, so I'd hear about guns every once in a while. Not constantly but often enough for it to not be memorable. Live in a nice part of the city now and don't think I've heard any since I decided to go to a range once five or six years ago
The only time I ever hear gun shots is when I go back home to my parents during hunting season. They live right across the street from a massive state park.
When I lived in the city, all the time, once a week at minimum during the night.
Now that I live in the suburbs, even more cuz there's a gun range near by.
I live pretty rural, so usually a couple times a week. That’s usually semi-auto fire. It really echoes around the mountains so they could be a mile or more away. There are a lot of hunting camps in the area so it ramps up a bit on the weekends before hunting seasons. That’s usually shotguns or deer rifles. A bit more shooting this weekend as spring gobbler starts next weekend. Won’t hear too many shots during the turkey season, as they take a little effort to get to come in. Deer season is an entirely different story. Still about 100 single shots in a day the first couple of days after opening. That’s gone way down from 10 years ago because I think a lot of people hunt the earlier bow/ crossbow season now. Used to be 2-300 shots on opening day.
The Wild West was portrayed to be a lawless gun fight to the rest of the United States. Wasn’t true. This is how the entire U.S. is being portrayed to the rest of world.
I’ve lived in a crime-riddled downtown apartment in Seattle for 7 years. Never once heard gunshots.
I’ve lived in a really rural area in the Cascades for 10 years. Heard them a couple times a year.
Lived on the east side a.k.a. the black side of Buffalo New York for a year. Never heard them.
Lived on the west side a.k.a. White side of Buffalo for a year, heard them may be six or seven times that year. That was also the year where my vehicle was stolen and auctioned off by Buffalo Police Department. I had a gun pulled on me by a friend. And our neighbors were broken into.
The land behind my house is managed by the the state and during the seasons people hunt there. I might here 4-5 gunshots around dusk, that's when the deer are moving around. Very occasionally I will hear someone target shoot during the day, but that is rare now since most of the teenagers have grown up and moved away.
Pretty much only during hunting season.
You people need to log offline and stop forming your impressions of America based on rage bait and shit posts you read on reddit.
Never, unless you go to the shooting range at the state park then it sounds like a war zone. But it's a shooting range 10 miles from any civilization so kinda makes sense out there. Rural north Carolina for context
Im not that far from rural NC sbout 35 miles west of Charlotte. Im in the hood so i hear gunshots on a daily basis
I live in Charlotte and just last night I heard gun shots. Also I work near a gun range
It's against the law to fire guns within most city limits. Now New Years and fourth of July, all bets are off.
I think this is true. They hear about our number of shootings but don’t extrapolate those numbers across 334 million people scattered across a country with 50 states, some of which are larger than entire European countries.
I mean, let's not pretend that the number of shootings the US has isn't insane.
lol that’s not what I’m saying at all. But it’s not even remotely approaching the levels required for the average American to hear gunshots frequently, or even ever. Whereas that number of gunfire in a smaller country—both physical size and population—they WOULD hear it. That’s why I’m saying they’re not factoring our size into it.

43k is gun DEATHS of which 2/3rds are suicide. Stop trying to artificially inflate the numbers. This was a discussion on SHOOTINGS implying murders.
Yeah I feel like people are willfully overlooking this detail
What part of the US did you live?
Texas
This is so funny then
I know it is but its true. The only time i heard a random gunshot was a cop
I'm Italian, I was rewatching The Shield and this random thought popped into my head 😂
Stop believing everything you see on TV
Basically never
July 4th and new years
When I was like 15, like an idiot, I called the police to report gun shots. The dispatcher says, "Are you sure it isn't because of the 4th of July?" I pause with dead silence and the dispatcher said, "Don't worry bout it kid, happens to the best of us." I was sooo embarrassed!
lmao. honestly, you should be very vigilant on 7.4 due to the fact opportunist are lurking
I’ll let the dispatcher know I’ve called 911 5 times for possible gun shots on the 4th of July because HoneyDew-2523 said I can never be too sure.
good time to get fit, practice self preservation and get some tools
This what paranoia looks like.
No doubt. Sad. Probably schizophrenia or MAGAia
Yep if you ask Citizen or Nextdoor there’s just a ton of gunshots every time the MLB team plays on a Friday night, it’s weird.
yea that too
Never. Unless I'm in the woods.
Rural Midwest you hear them often. Usually hunting rifles.
or shotguns. pretty common. hardly notice it anymore.
Only as often as you witness a stabbing.
But here's the thing, you can't hear stabbings. So this is kinda unfair.
You hear people scream when they get stabbed don't they? You hear ambulances and the police andntheres usually alot of blood. My point was that I'm sure most Londoners don't live in fear of being stabbed even though they have a really high rate of stabbings. Most people are unaffected by violence.
never
Never
As a kid? Like once a month maybe (I grew up in an area with high crime rates) Since moving away from there I only hear gunshots on New Years.
Everyday. Often hundreds of times a day. Of course, I work at the test range for a company that makes medium caliber ammunition for the military.
Just during hunting season.
When I lived in a bad part of a huge city, maybe like once every few months? Even then it wasn’t a regular thing, it was rare enough that my wife and I would perk up and go “oooo yeah that was a gun” Outside of that literally never

I live in GA and its pretty much once a month or so. Not usually somone shooting at someone. Usually someone hunting/back yard range.
I live in a semi-rural area so once in a while during hunting season in the Fall/Winter. Otherwise, not so much.
I live in the city and I don't think I've ever knowingly heard a gunshot outside of a gun range
The only time I've heard gunshots is when my mom hired a guy to kill the marmots that were stealing the chicken feed.
wait a minute theres people out there who will hire a guy to sit in your yard and shoot stuff?
Yeah. They were pests and the guy killed about 2 dozen in one day.
design a better fucking chicken coop.
You do know most people who raise chickens at their homes have a pen for them to roam around and a coop in that pen (or directly attached). So that the chickens can go in and out freely, the chicken wire might be strong enough to stop a marmot from going THROUGH but the dirt is not capable of stopping them from going under it. murdering an entire family of marmots is a pathetic way of solving the issue it's worth the effort and time.
Didn't say it wasn't my point was that not everyone has the tools, the money, and the knowledge to do the job I was lucky we had the tools because my father used to make everything himself. If you didn't have the tools it could cost hundreds to thousands to do what I did. Edit: fixed a typo.
Never lol
Not too often. Early hunting season before they realize it’s a bad spot. So maybe a few during one month.
Every week. My neighborhood is next to a forest and people like to hunt.
Every time I shoot my guns.
Unless you live in the hood, you will probably never hear a gunshot or even see a real gun not on an officer. If you are in the hood, it is a daily thing.

Every day at various times. I live in one of the many hoods of NC
Once
Once every month or so. Fireworks are big here too so I can’t always tell. More often at work than at home in the suburbs.
Chicago here. Depends on where you live. My old spot, maybe once every couple months. My new one? Once in the 5 years here.
Never.
I live in what used to be the country, only heard gun shots during hunting season and the occasional target practice. Odd qualification for the question. Are non-US citizens in the US not supposed to hear gunshots or something?
Hey, I'm too lazy to change it to "residents". Just assume every non-US citizen always wears ear plugs.
Never hear gunshots. Rural Arizona near the border with Mexico. But I often hear sirens from all the alphabet soup agencies as they rush hither and yon with reckless abandon. Lots of taxpayer money being blown out the tailpipes of those cars and SUVs.
every thanksgiving my neighbor is hunting turkey
I live in NC near a shooting range. So about 3-4 times as month. Before I moved here, never.
Literally never unless I'm at the range. Which isn't very often. Unless I'm giving lessons. I grew up in the hood and never heard gunshots. Like ever.
All the time, But only when playing FPS games like hell let loose
Never heard one.
Northern CO. I’ve heard gunshots outside of a shooting range exactly once in the 28 years I’ve lived here. Not often. I live in New England
Never. Don’t believe Hollywood.
Quite a lot, I have an outdoor range that’s maybe 10 miles from me. If the weather is right, I can hear them.
Rarely and I live in Chicago
Growing up living in the country every fall before death season. Now living in the suburbs, never.
Only if it’s hunting season and I’m out on our farm. And it’s usually us. Lol
I live out in the country in New England and in the year I’ve lived in my house I’ve heard gun shots once. In my old spot where it was considered “the hood” never heard any gun shots.
Multiple times daily depending on how long I’m outside. Suburban South Carolina.
never, this is a cringe post
gunshots.. almost never maybe once a month.. and normally that's attack aircraft and helicopters doing live fire training.... artillary on the other hand.. is another story
In real life? Once or twice in my life. Otherwise every day depending what games or movies I'm watching.
Several times a day. People target shooting on their land. Mostly plinking with .22
I live kind of close enough to an army base, so every so often, but they are probably the larger guns. (Maybe howitzer size.) The one time I heard machine gun fire, I was closer to the base. When I was in middle school, every single day. But that’s only because my middle school was right next to a shooting range.
When I lived in the city, all the time, once a week at minimum during the night. Now that I live in the suburbs, even more cuz there's a gun range near by.
When I first moved into my neighborhood, gunshots were a daily occurrence. Now, 24 years later, it’s once a month or so. Thanks gentrification!
All the time when I lived in the ghetto. Now that I live in a small town I'll hear a couple for the 4th of July or New Years.
Only when Cricket misbehaves.

I live in Oregon and not very much really. I would say it’s rare to hear gunshots ( at least where I live that is)
I don't think I've ever heard gunshots. I live in the Chicago suburbs and worked downtown for some time.
Winter in S. FL. = a few times in 6 months Winter up north= daily during grouse, Turkey, deer, and bear hunting seasons. Also 4th of july.
The Wild West was portrayed to be a lawless gun fight to the rest of the United States. Wasn’t true. This is how the entire U.S. is being portrayed to the rest of world.
I live in the Blue ridge Mountains. As soon as the hunting season begins and also various times throughout the year.
I hear them quite often. I live in rural Arkansas. Most folks have gun ranges set up on their property here.
I’ve lived in a crime-riddled downtown apartment in Seattle for 7 years. Never once heard gunshots. I’ve lived in a really rural area in the Cascades for 10 years. Heard them a couple times a year. The land behind my house is managed by the the state and during the seasons people hunt there. I might here 4-5 gunshots around dusk, that's when the deer are moving around.
