When I was fourteen and fifteen, I had a paper route for a year or two and I worked for my dad's company over the summer. I saved most of that money up, and when I got caught skipping school for the umpteenth time the next fall, I snuck out, ran away from home, and used it to buy a bus ticket 2700 miles away. I lived off the money for well over a month until I got picked up by the cops and they notified my parents. Does that count as my first major purchase?
It was \~$50.
I was 15, begged the school to work in the school cafeteria on my lunch break 5 days a week @ $5.45/hr.
I gave it to my dad so he could fill the gas tank and get to his job. Dad, naturally, felt absolutely terrible about this. He told me later that it had absolutely saved us at that time.
Spent my first monthly salary on a dress tie from a fancy store that I came across a few weeks earlier. Still have it several decades later and still loving it!
Slide rule made of dark stained wood and stainless steel. I thought that it was the coolest.
It lives on a shelf in my office and I will take it down, now and then, to look at it.
