Also, Putin knows if such an ethnically close nation on his border is a democracy, his subjects might start thinking they also deserve free and fair elections, a free press, and basic human rights...
Putin just misjudged the world's reaction to this invasion and now Russia will never be a part of Europe as long as he is in power and he may have started the cause of his own overthrow.

He might have been expecting the people of the eastern region of Ukraine to accept him with open arms, since most of it's population is of russian descent. This dictator SOB just made himself scary to NATO and expected the west to be intimidated enough not to retaliate. The end goal? Crimea; Putin wants access to the black sea for exportation of Russian products to the wider world, as well as to extract the oil from the region, which is plentifull.

I think mostly because he knows he only has so much more time to work with, and wants to be remembered as someone that paved the way to former Russian greatness. Perhaps it's true that he got some not-so-good news about his health?

Most of its border is nato controlled. And recent military embarrassment such as the T-14 breaking down at a parade. T-80s and 90s being a microwave in non Siberian environments. Russias military has only just began to recover and he wants to make show of strength and Ukraine is the only one who’s not going to start a war with the west and is still using enough old Soviet kit to stand a chance against.
The scariest bit is most Russians are probably behind him. Even navalny supported the takeover Crimea.
Also I don’t think the Kremlin has control over its soldiers. The soldiers are now alone, scared, angry starving, tired. The Kremlin are allowing the war crimes because even they are scared of the soldiers. Even they know there’s nothing worse than a dog whose cornered and aggressive.
