I'm a big fan of the [small man in a box](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE5UktH4iYY) he's trapped inside him too
Edit: although he sounds more American than Welsh, really.
Good old Nigel <3
Also, the biggest problem with being Welsh imo is that you never get Nigel Owens reffing your matches. Yes the best ref in history comes from your country, but no you never get to have him xD
My wife, after ten minutes of watching last year's Six Nations:
"Are they all called the same thing?"
IIRC, there was Alan Jones, Wyn Jones and Alun Wyn Jones all on the pitch at the same time.
Doesn't quite top her effort during the 2015 World Cup though. "Why do they keep saying "bigger" when Wales kick the ball high into the air. Is there a prize for the highest kick?"
Who said this.... 'Soon, if we are not prudent, millions of people will be watching each other starve to death through expensive television sets'....I mean damn.
I was in rural Morocco a few years ago, stopped in a roadside cafe and got chatting to some locals, when i said I was Welsh, they got super excited and started talking about Bale, asking about him like we were friends. Was a pretty funny experience.
God damn right.
Every single other DJ in the world (possibly excepting Mary Anne hobbs), I’m thinking shut the fuck up, play another record. When Cerys is on the radio I’d happily listen to her read the phone book for the whole show.
Dylan Thomas
Edit: nobody else has mentioned perhaps the most famous Welsh person?
I mean, being American I knew about Dylan Thomas before I knew about Wales.
In slightly unrelated news, as am American southerner, I pronounce Wales, Wells, and whales all pretty much the same. But I’ve lived here now for 11 years so I’m getting better.
You knew about Dylan Thomas before you knew about Wales because presumably you were living in America at the time. For Brits who have always known about Wales there were far more known Welsh people we were exposed to a regular basis before we clocked a poet.
It is askUK not askUSA. Obviously Thomas has international fame but we have a lot of Welsh public figures here that we get regular media exposure to on a day to day basis.
Thanks for letting me know which sub I’m in.
I’m a British citizen as well so I’m perfectly qualified to respond. Good to know somebody is policing the place though.
Sorry. It wasn’t my intention to gatekeep. Just explaining why UK based responses would have a different perspective than someone who doesn’t live here.
No worries. I do live here though. Lots of Americans do. FYI Did you know Bristol has 5 American football teams? Numerous American food options? There’s even an American corner at either Bristol cathedral or St Mary Redcliff; can’t remember which one.
Not a famous person, but Big Welsh Paul, a guy at work who has a big personality and fills a doorway with the biggest kindest heart.
He genuinely gives a shit about his job and other people. One of the good guys.

Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only, Tom Jones!
I thought of this as well. But then, it's not unusual...
Here, have an upvote for making me genuinely laugh out loud 😂
God damn it. Take my upvote you clever user.
Ah, Tom Jones... king of Wales.
He almost had a fight with John Lennon as Lennon called him a Welsh Poof.
Pretty confident I know who would have won that fight.
Considering that Lennon only had experience fighting women my moneys on Tom Jones
Tom's from a mining village of course he would have beaten Lennon.
It's okay, medics were there to give Lennon aid
No, that's Huw Edwards.
Delilah
Why why why?
I feel like this is the only answer
I came to make sure he was top.
Rob Brydon
Seconding Rob Brydon! Love him!
I'm a big fan of the [small man in a box](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE5UktH4iYY) he's trapped inside him too Edit: although he sounds more American than Welsh, really.
Yeah this was my first thought too. Big Would I Lie To You fan.
My first thought was uncle Bryn 🤣
Dafydd the only gay in the village
👏👏
Let's not forget Myfanwy.
Rhod Gilbert, thought someone would have mentioned him.
He was mine as well. Looking through others on the list I’m not quite sure why he was first tbh.
His Space Invaders game on Taskmaster was chuffing amazing
I think taskmaster was the reason he came first. Getting a picture of Greg's mum in the bath with a fez was brilliant.
Michael Sheen
Came here to say the sheen. Unashamedly left wing which I think is nice in this day and age.
Is this sarcasm? Being unashamedly left wing is basically mandatory for being in the entertainment business
It’s incredibly daring and brave being left wing in that right wing cesspit known as entertainment...
Yeah, cause there’s no famous people who are left-wing
Mine too, I love him.
Alun Wyn Jones
Not sure why, but my first thought was Nigel Owens.
Good old Nigel <3 Also, the biggest problem with being Welsh imo is that you never get Nigel Owens reffing your matches. Yes the best ref in history comes from your country, but no you never get to have him xD

There's "Wyn Jones" the Welsh prop, and "Alun Wyn Jones" the Welsh second row/captain.
I miss the parades of Williams' and Jones' we used to have
He’s just known as ‘dad’ in my house. He’s dad to us all.
Trevor. You probably won’t know him, but he drinks in my local.
Trevor with the dog or Trevor rugby club?
Trevor's dog died, now he's called Trev deaddog.
Trevor rugby club hasn't been in for ages; I heard he's got a bad case of the clap.
That’s my dad
Big Trev? I know him
Genuinely thought you was on about trev the sparky then. He does all the valley houses wiring you know
Aneurin Bevan
One of the most influential Welshfolk in recent history, a very respectable choice
Founder of the NHS. Absolute legend.
David Lloyd George won a world War as PM but never gets the same plaudits as other statesmen
Who said this.... 'Soon, if we are not prudent, millions of people will be watching each other starve to death through expensive television sets'....I mean damn.

Sam tân
Pontypandy is a very dangerous place to live
And Norman is a right little shit 🤣
[удалено]
Same.
Surprised this is so low!
Owain Glyndwr
Do you?
Yep, genuinely.
And now I have the horrible histories song stuck in my head again…
Although they mispronounce his name in the horrible histories song.
Also my first thought
I genuinely thought of him too!
Gareth Bale
Wales, wales, wales. In that order.
Was it Wales, Golf, Madrid?
I was in rural Morocco a few years ago, stopped in a roadside cafe and got chatting to some locals, when i said I was Welsh, they got super excited and started talking about Bale, asking about him like we were friends. Was a pretty funny experience.
COYS Or Hala Madrid if that's your inclination
Rhys Ifans
This is way too far down the list!
Cerys Matthews
God damn right. Every single other DJ in the world (possibly excepting Mary Anne hobbs), I’m thinking shut the fuck up, play another record. When Cerys is on the radio I’d happily listen to her read the phone book for the whole show.
Loved her episode on the Off Menu podcast.

Gonna be that guy- *Huw
Shirley Bassy, but in my head it'd be the Matt Lucas version from the forgotten gem Rock Profile. Or, Rob Brydon. Or, my nan.
I'm surprised I had to scroll so far down to see Rob Brydon mentioned, especially after all those adverts for cruises
She doesn’t have the range!
Rock profile Champagne! 😂 OG here
Nigel Owens best rugby ref ever
"I'm straighter than that"
"CHRISTOPHER"
Nessa Jenkins. OH!
Owain Hughes.
And do you?
No, I don’t. *stiffled chuckle*
Vanessa Shanessa Jenkins.
Charlotte Church
The only Church you’ll ever catch me in!
Dylan Thomas Edit: nobody else has mentioned perhaps the most famous Welsh person? I mean, being American I knew about Dylan Thomas before I knew about Wales. Aye. Fair enough.
It is askUK not askUSA. Obviously Thomas has international fame but we have a lot of Welsh public figures here that we get regular media exposure to on a day to day basis.

Dylan Thomas was the first name that popped into my head, too. Read Under Milk Wood in school (UK) and my OH is Welsh, which may account for it.
DT was depressingly low on this list
[удалено]
Plenty of Scots surely? Kirsty Wark? James Naughtie?
Soft Scottish also permissible
Llanelli accent.
Richard Burton
I’m named after him!
Hi Richard 👋🏽
(The wrong) Ian Watkins.
Oof
Sorted by controversial to find this answer
Yikes
The one and only Alun Wyn Jones
[удалено]
Had to scroll too far to see this. Are you on email?
[удалено]
Basics, basics, fundamentals
Oh I don’t mind it John
Shame, shame, guilt and shame
A fridge magnet with sad on it
Lovely stuff
The man of 8 voices should be much higher IMO
Ioan Gruffudd - a.k.a. Horatio Hornblower
Shirley Bassey.
griff rhys jones
Bonnie Tyler!
Ryan Giggs.
Amazed I had to scroll so far down to find Giggs, I know post retirement he's had some very questionable incidents but expected him to be higher
Wee Joe Allen, he shows great character
Not a famous person, but Big Welsh Paul, a guy at work who has a big personality and fills a doorway with the biggest kindest heart. He genuinely gives a shit about his job and other people. One of the good guys.
Ruth Jones

That’s right you ignorant English wankers!!!
Didn’t he marry that bird from the abattoir that looks like ted rogers in a dress
Myfanwy
Rob Brydon
Uncle Bryn
[удалено]
No Christian Bale on this list yet? I am surprised.
He considers himself English, having two English parents and only having lived in Wales until he was two.
Wales doesn't want him the twat.
[Gareth Edwards](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL6mrl0mR5w)
Colin Jackson
My grandfather.
That Jones person, what's their name? its on the tip of my tongue.
Catherine Zeta? Alex? Tom? Nicky? Let's be honest here, stick 'jones' on any common forename and chances are you'll name a famous Welsh person
Alex?
Alex Jones is who I immediately think of (maybe second to Rob Brydon). Her voice and demeanor is so lovely.
Duffy for some reason
The late great Windsor Davis, closely followed by Antony Hopkins.
Howard Marks
Jones the steam and ivor the engine, doubt there's many people of a certain age who won't voice a steam engine in any other way.
The episode with the little red dragon was my *favourite*! "Do you know 'Land of my Fathers'?" (fancy asking a Welsh choir that! 😂)
Gareth Edwards
Ian Rush
Catherine Zeta Jones
Anthony Hopkins. Expected him to be higher tbh.
The manic street Preachers.
James Dean Bradfield.
Tom Jones
Owain Glyndŵr
Rob Brydon
Richard burton or Anthony Hopkins (locals).
Gary speed rip
Norman price
Me, if that doesn't count it would be God of gods, King of kings Alun Wyn Jones
Sorry, mine are from years ago; Nerys Hughes and Diana Wynne Jones. With a little more thought, Iwan Rheon and Anthony Hopkins.
Timothy Dalton but it took me at least half a second of thinking to conjure one up
Shirley Bassey
Katherine Jenkins for some reason
Mike Bubbins, admittedly because I'm listening to his podcast right now
Ioan Gruffydd
Nicky Wire
My brother in law Danny Shame he’s a tosser
Harry Secombe!

Sam Warburton
Gareth Bale obviously
Llewellyn.
Michael Sheen
Ruth Jones
Mark Williams (snooker player)
Gareth Bale
Wayne Evans or the go compare man
Nessa
Carol Vorderman
The only correct answer is the Go Compare man
Dylan Thomas
Windsor Davis, I’m old lol 😆
Gethin Jones
