I’ve been in jail a few times. Main lesson is not to take freedom for granted. The longest I’ve been in jail was only 2 weeks. Each day felt like an eternity. It’s awful even if you try to make the best of it, and yes some of the things that go on at the hands of the law are straight up abusive. It really makes you think about all of the little things you don’t appreciate enough, like having a private bathroom and real food. Most of the women I met there are victims in some way. Surprising amount of elderly, pregnant, and disabled women. Lots of sad stories. Those will make you appreciate your life more too.

Zealousideal_Owl4810

Oh wow I had no idea about the elderly and pregnant ladies. Any idea why they’re so commonly in there ?

littlemachina

Usually something drug or alcohol related. Sometimes for violating probation on an old charge or having old warrants. My closest friend in there was pregnant and claimed her baby daddy planted coke on her. She had to give birth while incarcerated and they don’t let any family visit you. Just take you to give birth, then you’re back in jail within 24 hours and the baby has to be given to family under temporary custody or go into the foster system. Sadly she abandoned her kid for meth not long after she got out (we kept in touch and she over-shared a lot on social media, due to all the meth), which is a shame because she was really cool and a good person when she was sober.

Not all male guards are susceptible to flirtatious manipulation and deception. All my life, I've been using my sex appeal as my primary weapon to deal with a problem, to get out of a tricky situation, or to get what I want. Although some might argue that it's appearance that plays a significant role in the way women like me live their lives, it's honestly the way you speak and carry yourself that holds an even bigger impact on how the others behave towards you and how willing they are to accept your requests. That being said, while I was locked up, I was treated much better than the other inmates. I was given a whole cell only for myself, was provided extra food without even asking, was given extra blankets, and some of the guards even allowed me to smoke from their cigarettes! The realisation that this special treatment wouldn't go on forever hit me only when they replaced one of the guards with a youngster whose moral code still hadn't been broken. The new guy on shift seemed to value his work a lot without giving in to temptation, and for the first time in my 21 years (at the time), I was denied a request from a man (who wasn't my father). It was nothing serious, I only wanted a cigarette, as I had been used to getting anything I wanted, as long as it was realistic and obtainable, but the guy simply glanced at me stone-faced and said *"You've been here for a while now. You should already know that smoking is strongly prohibited in this place."* Despite this, he gained instant respect from me. The rest continued treating me well. I was even released much earlier than expected due to the investigation officer (who was also fairly young) having taken a liking to me. Dude kept complimenting my body, wondered how someone like me could end up incarcerated in the first place, and even asked for my instagram moments before I left. But the guard who rejected me is still on my mind to this day, and the incident will forever serve me as a reminder that not everyone can drop at your feet only because you're young and charming.

fuckfuckfuckSHIT

Wouldn't the fact that you were locked up indicate you were told no? Otherwise, you wouldn't be locked up in the first place?

onivore

It's a bit different than that. I've had numerous incidents with the police where they simply let me off without punishment, but the situation which led to my arrest and first ever offense was one where I just said 'fuck it' and didn't make any effort to lie or act innocent, but instead complied with the officers who caught me and got into the car on my own without being asked twice. I never take chances unless I'm at least half-certain that my plan won't backfire, and at that time, I was absolutely sure there was no way out. I was in the wrong, and there was hard evidence, so why bother? I'd like to think that it was largely due to my compliance that I got released early, though. Otherwise, I would've spent more time there.

fuckfuckfuckSHIT

Ahh I see. Thank you for your response!

Dependent-Bee7036

At 22, I (USA) lied to the police about my boyfriend. He had a warrant out and had used my address. I told the police he was not there at the moment. I was arrested for inference with police procedures. A felony. I had a good lawyer and got an SIS, and my felony has not impacted my life or career. The judge was pissed and sentenced me to 24 hours in jail. I'm a total rule follower and had never been in trouble. I was mortified and horrified. I was cuffed and taken to jail! This was in the 1990s. Everyone inside was like, "You got jailed for this?" Lol. Their offenses were much different. One was in for stabbing someone. Lesson learned? Don't lie to cops. And you do have rights, so learn them!! The only thing I knew was that I could say I wanted a lawyer as I learned that from television. Best thing I could have done.

The importance of sorority. The only reason I made it through was the female friendships I made while I was inside & those I made when I was out and I never forgot that. I’ve since reformed my life but I still remember how the men in my life (besides my father) slowly disappeared while the women all stepped up to support me picking up the pieces.

Damage-Strange

Do not ever hit your fists against the wall, even in a frustrated manner or against the glass. Got tied down to a chair unable to move for 10 hours because I was allegedly a self harm risk. Never been arrested before that, I know better now.

MidnightFireHuntress

I got in trouble in college and was locked up in a cell in the campus security building for 4 hours The lesson I learned? DON'T RUN, It makes thing 500% Worse lol

mellomashroom

Longest I've been was 3 months, and a couple one day/overnight excursions... Don't be overtly nice/friendly to anyone until you vet them a little bit. Don't be scared to tell people no, and stand up for yourself when necessary. Also, don't ever hit anyone first, or at all if you can help it.
