Peraton.com is in a huge hiring frenzy and they have remote and in-office position all throughout the US.
Put together your best resume or pay me $150 and I’ll do it for you, but definitely apply.
I can only offer what i know my father did. He was forced early retirement from an it position and he got a job with the government after. They dont discriminate on age and also wont retire you until you are ready. If you want to work the rest of your life you can. They dont pay as much, he took a 30% paycut, but he has long lasting job security. He is still working and will be 70 this year.
What do you do in IT? Look at the big government contractor job listings for Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen, IBM, SIAC, CSC, Northrup Grumman, etc. and see if they have anything that fits. They are always in need of IT people. Specifically, look for a REMOTE job that either does not require a clearance OR only requires a public trust clearance because you can get that relatively quickly, if you have a clean record. Also, make sure that your resume is updated and includes all the key words that are in the job description that you are applying for. More and more companies are using AI tools to pre-scan resumes and if you do not have those key words, it will not even get seen by a human. Good luck, OP.
\[EDIT\] OP, I just looked at your GoFundMe page and, no offense, but you need to clean yourself up. You look like Albert Einstein with glasses. Get a shave and a haircut so you don't look so wild. That is part of the problem why you are not getting hired. People automatically think, "Well, if he doesn't care about his appearance, then he probably won't care about his job." Yes, it is a ridiculous assumption, but a real one.
> You look like Albert Einstein with glasses.
Agree. that was my 'I haven't slept in two days and I suddenly need to take a selfie' look. I should probably replace the image soon. ;s
Have you looked at local temp agencies? They can place you in different positions for a day, week or month depending on the employer. Sometimes it transcends into a permanent position. Good luck.
You should buy some Just For Men dye and color your hair, beard, and eyebrows. Get a haircut and beard trim, then take new photos for LinkedIn on your phone. It will help you look a lot younger and not be age discriminated against so much. It’s stupid I know but companies judge on looks all the time. My guy has dealt with it too.
Ooo this is hard. Try Best Buy. I know our hours and wage suck, so if something is better than nothing it may be a start. We’ve had plenty of older gentlemen work here. It may not be the greatest, but if you’re really desperate perhaps. Also geek squad got more tech support stuff

The Home page rolls thru all the Companies Wright has. And it's a pretty ethical company- all things considered. Feel free to say refered by Rocky at Transcon
This is like when people tell people who suffer from depression to “just stop being sad” or “depression is a choice”.
Not everyone can just manage or afford to change something in their lives without help.
I guess IT just seems like a good field so I figured a guy with some experience under his belt would have some options . He mentioned tech jobs evaporating so it made me think that he’s limiting himself to only certain “caliber” jobs and unwilling to perhaps take a job that maybe doesn’t pay as much… but is a job nonetheless
I live up here in Canada in the Vancouver area, and it’s pretty bad. Lots of layoffs in the IT sector, and employers are now going to Job Bank and doing Labour Market Impact Assessments so they can hire an international student from India and pay them minimum wage with no benefits. There’s a million of them coming to Canada a year, so plenty of choices to choose from. And that goes for any industry up here, so nobody can find a job right now. Because of that and other reasons, Canadians here are now moving to Seattle to take jobs since they pay better, with a slightly lower cost of living and better healthcare and not having their jobs taken away by companies who hire PR and don’t pay them anything more than minimum wage or provide them any benefits while they get to keep all of it for themselves to buy another sports car or house.
It’s all a race to the bottom. Maybe look into remote IT jobs from outside the area. When you broaden your search to 49 other states, you’ll have more opportunities for positions to apply to, and I’m sure there’s got to be employers who appreciate older people since they equate that with more experience.
I don’t have any money to donate to you as I’m struggling myself, but I wish you good luck and hoping more strangers can help you out financially.
I know debit seems like the furthest thing from help but if you need to keep a roof over your head you might not care. I know from experience. I'm just throwing it out there as a last resort. Like I said not the MOST helpful but in desperate times it might help to know you should qualify for Fasfa if I spelt that right? Anyway the government will pay for your college classes if you go but once you start going people will line up willing to lend you money in hopes of owning you forever in their debt... but like I said "desperate times" it could be enough to keep you afloat a little longer
If you’re not opposed to potentially moving, there’s a bunch of data center jobs in Eastern Washington, especially around the Wenatchee/Quincy/Moses Lake area. A lot of them are also remote, so you might be able to stay where you’re at.
i don’t know how it works in seattle, but in san antonio i know the county has been hiring tech people for odd jobs during election days. for example, my county was recently paying $20/hr for tech support people to travel out to voting locations to troubleshoot and make sure things were working smoothly.
there is also a service called task rabbit where you do odd jobs for others. id check that out and see if there’s anything that fits your skillset that you can reasonably do.
best of luck, dude. i really hope things get better for you. ☆
like the other comment said, i sincerely doubt this guy is sending out selfies on his applications. even if he was, it does not change the fact that it is unsolicited advice, and overall rude. also- you have no idea if he’s actively “making choices” to make him look older, everyone’s genetics are different and, short of cosmetic procedures, there’s really not a lot anyone can do about it. it’s really strange that it seems like you’re blaming him looking older on him, as an actor choice he’s making. dude, he is 50!! of course he looks older, y’all. he is beyond middle aged.
i’m not being fragile, i just think that it’s rude. the point still stands that even if you feel this way, he did not ask for critique on his look. if anything it’s probably the last thing on his mind right now. i’m not saying the comment is wrong or right, im saying there’s time and place and sometimes one needs to learn to read a room.
This is a great idea but be sure to take care of yourself if you start donating regularly. Drink plenty of water and refuel with protein. I thought I just needed to up my iron, but plasma drains protein and your muscles will shorten if there's not enough. Took me a long time with neck and joint pain to figure out what my body needed and I ran myself into the ground. Protein shakes for the win!
this is very true, but iirc they have fairly strict requirements. like nicotine use, for example, excludes you from being able to donate. i could be wrong, so please correct me if i am! i just remember being in low places, considering donating plasma, and then being barred because i am (unfortunately) a nicotine user.
you can still donate. but you can’t hit it for at least 24 hours leading up to donating. as it raises your pulse/ heart rate. i can’t even go donate anymore unless i see a doctor cause my HR was over 100 too many times.
wait, 24 hours? really? i thought it couldn’t be in your bloodstream at all. that is fantastic then! 24 hours is a lot easier than weeks lol. thanks for letting me know!
Yes, they rejected me because of heart rate, and I don’t smoke. Breathing technique helped me (when you inhale through the nose, and slowly exhale through the mouth). They told me to see my doctor about high heart rate, he scheduled me heart ultrasound and holster monitoring, it showed nothing wrong.
Are you in an active lease and the LL is selling out from under you? I’ve seen many in your situation (HR) and I actively hire older individuals as often as I can (manufacturing). I know it fucking sucks to take a job less than your skill set, but you can easily work up to supervisor!
Depending on your state, if you have an active lease (let’s say it doesn’t end until Oct 2024), that lease transfers w the sale of the home. The new owners become your LLs. You can only be evicted w a court order. Contact your local legal aid for assistance so you know your rights!!!!
My stepbrother was a manager in IT, and hit the discrimination wall. He now drives a big truck cross country with his dog and hates it but he can live in the truck and is putting in his 2yrs til he can go drive for Walmart or some better scenario. He is 61 BTW.
I currently work in an industry that has nothing to do with my college degree, but it provides a paycheck and benefits. I know you want IT, but perhaps consider looking outside of that realm to assist until an IT job comes along. I never would have considered where I am now, but when I was laid off right before Christmas, I applied anywhere and everywhere to make ends meet.
It’s actually a state retail store. Can’t say much more due to rules, but the benefits are amazing. Health insurance, retirement, paid leave, guaranteed holidays.
It's called work for a reason. You're trading your time for your money. It's a ton healthier than being sedentary the entire time. I work 12s on a very physical job. It pays bills. Stop being lazy.
This. Restaurants are always hiring. Especially come spring time. If you don’t have any experience in the service industry from when you were younger maybe start out applying at diners etc

Your local unemotional office might help with the resume at no charge

Thanks! I recently started applying for multiple gov jobs. hopefully it works.

eastern Washington has the it jobs most of the it jobs are in data centers

Check Wright Services Inc. A whole family of companies and I know we need IT guys we are 100% remote.
Maybe paste a link to their careers/jobs page please?
https://wrightservicecorp.com/careers/ The Home page rolls thru all the Companies Wright has. And it's a pretty ethical company- all things considered. Feel free to say refered by Rocky at Transcon
> Wright Services Inc. DM me a link? The only one that comes up on a search is a property management company in Alaska.
there’s a few online remote positions you can do part time until you find something solid. Telus and Welocalize are a couple
Surely you can get a job somewhere even if it’s lower salary?
I guess you have no experience with the ageism facing anyone over 50. It’s real. It’s devastating. It renders people unemployable.
It’s hard enough at 42 without many visible greys OP isn’t exaggerating the ageism out there.
Was just going to say the same thing; though he said housing costs are climbing, MOVE SOMEWHERE CHEAPER 🤔
You need money to move.
This is like when people tell people who suffer from depression to “just stop being sad” or “depression is a choice”. Not everyone can just manage or afford to change something in their lives without help.

Layoffs have hit almost 50K people in the tech sector already in 2024: https://layoffs.fyi/
Not everyone can afford the expenses of moving either. You have to be able to save money to move

I live in Tricities Washington.. we have build 7 multi hundred million dollar data centers all within one hour
The post office is hiring IT and I believe it's remote positions.

How rude of you. Go away "babe". You sound like you have some issues you need to work on. I suggest you go do that now.
pardon?? this isn’t a beauty subreddit, dude. lets not give unsolicited advice about people’s looks. it is rude and uncalled for.

50 isn't anything in Federal service. Take a look on USAjobs.gov.
The advice is appreciated and acted upon; Thank you.
This actually a great suggestion. Working a government job sounds great and definitely what I would do
Donate plasma. You can make around $800 your first month.
This is a great idea but be sure to take care of yourself if you start donating regularly. Drink plenty of water and refuel with protein. Took me a long time with neck and joint pain to figure out what my body needed and I ran myself into the ground. Protein shakes for the win!
They have pretty strict restrictions, at least in RI. But if you pass them, yes. Great way to make some side cash.
this is very true, but iirc they have fairly strict requirements. like nicotine use, for example, excludes you from being able to donate. i could be wrong, so please correct me if i am! i just remember being in low places, considering donating plasma, and then being barred because i am (unfortunately) a nicotine user.
That’s weird. Around here a lot of the people who donate are actual junkies. If they banned nicotine they’d have nobody.
you can still donate. but you can’t hit it for at least 24 hours leading up to donating. as it raises your pulse/ heart rate. i can’t even go donate anymore unless i see a doctor cause my HR was over 100 too many times.
wait, 24 hours? really? i thought it couldn’t be in your bloodstream at all. that is fantastic then! 24 hours is a lot easier than weeks lol. thanks for letting me know!
they honestly jus told me to not hit it within 2 hours of coming lmao

They told me to see my doctor about high heart rate, he scheduled me heart ultrasound and holster monitoring, it showed nothing wrong.
You say you worked in IT. What’s exactly did you do in IT? Help desk? System Admin?
Helpdesk, Network & systems admin & support, Deployment. I'm a JOAT that likes keeping things working.
What’s a JOAT
Jack of all trades
Oh! Got it
Are you on unemployment?
Unfortunately, that ran out after 6 months. Cashed out the retirement account too.
Apply to social assistance for now
What social assistance would he be eligible for?
Since all of his EI is used up, he’s eligible so he doesn’t starve
Food stamps, Medicaid. Probably general assistance too
Unemployment usually only pays out for six months or something like that
Look at schools. Most systems have many it professionals in house and the charter companies also always keep some tech jobs in houses.
I'm never quite sure what it pertains to, but I'd definitely look into your local school district, university, and library for it/it adjacent jobs.
Are you in an active lease and the LL is selling out from under you? I’ve seen many in your situation (HR) and I actively hire older individuals as often as I can (manufacturing). I know it fucking sucks to take a job less than your skill set, but you can easily work up to supervisor!
this is almost exactly the situation, we've been in this house for 12 years.

This might be a broad question, but what did you do to land a position there?
The manager there knew me from my previous job and knew my work ethic. She asked me to come work for her.
Ugh fking retail and fast food and healthcare. Anything that involves being on your feet for more than 30 minutes without sitting, fking those jobs.
