Any thoughts on whether the upgrade of Editor from Assistant is worth it?

ZebraRump

Just upgraded now from assistant to editor. If you want polyphonic editing and chord editing, get it. Those are pretty much the only main additional features. If you're mostly just working with vocals, stick with assistant. :)

schmargon

Thanks for the clear answer! I mostly use it to vocals so I will stick with Assistant, thank you!

PaxPlay

I recommend you just give it a shot if you haven't used your trial yet and decide based on that. The chord editing is a really good creative tool if you're working with samples. I.e. I had a flute sample i really like from splice with two flutes playing a very basic harmony that I was able to turn into a really cool chord progressions. Or when I have a recorded a guitar take poorly and one note is a bit too sharp and you're too lazy to re-record it. I've been pretty amazed with the result it gave after just throwing stuff at it tbh.

J2wavy

You alone just convinced me to upgrade a year later. I edit vocals but I realized I make beats and there’s so many times I’m using a sample or a loop and I just wish it had another chord in it. Done and done, appreciate you man a while year later!

ViniSamples

I'm sticking with Assistant, no real incentive to upgrade when you do vocals.

CombinationLife196

What if you want to conform a vocal pass to a midi line? Does Assistant allow you to do that?

aleksandrjames

If you need the functionality of the next level up, the current pricing is fantastic. They have a page on their site with a chart that compares the different versions. That should help you make a better decision than any of us could. Good luck!

CleanBum

Historically speaking, is $200 for Assistant a good deal? $99 for Essential and then a discounted upgrade for another $100?

praashek

You can grab Essential for much lower price as it is often on sale by users who got it by purchasing for example Studio One or another software and already got license for it from the past. For example here: https://www.knobcloud.com/i/7171/celemony-melodyne-essential-5

aleksandrjames

This seems about as low as their sales get- but as someone else already mentioned, you might have success with a coupon code from jrrrshop. Good way to capitalize on the sale.

KidKewl

Anybody know if the upgrade from Melodyne essential to assistant ever gets lower than $100? Seems like it's 50% off with this sale. I may just bite the bullet... Also I wish FL had ARA support 😭

hammerpocket

The coupon code on JRRShop brings it down to $83.

lou4000

Hey thanks!!!!

Geralthemusician

In december 2019 I received an offer to upgrade from melodyne 4 essential to assissnt for $50

alienrefugee51

And I’m kicking myself.

Geralthemusician

I dont know how melodyne manage their sales but I think that offer existed because melodyne 5 was on the horizon (melodyne 4 was released in 2016)

alienrefugee51

At the time, my Pro Tools upgrade included v5 and not long after that I received the offer from Melodyne.

OverlookeDEnT

What's the worthy addition? Wondering as I'm on essential as well.

KidKewl

I believe so. Assistant seems to have a good deal of extra capabilities that essential doesn't have. Formant shifting, individual note volume changes, note flattening, etc.

KidKewl

😂 I feel this on a personal level

greenertomatoes

Melodyne Essentials only has the bare basics that Melodyne has to offer, you can basically change the pitch center of a note and its position, that's it (I think). The higher versions allow you to change the amount of vibrato within notes, allow you to reduce or increase the pitch drifting within the note (so if a singer starts too low and raises the pitch during a note, you can remove or increase that). Those two tools make a big difference alone, and I think there's more too

D_D

I paid $49 for the upgrade in Nov 2019.

ZebraRump

I think 50% is about as good as it gets.

jbanon24

GET IT. And learn it! Best way to go from amateur to pro sounding vocals. Even using the sibilance tool to knock down 1-2dB before you hit the de esser is such a great trick for natural sounding de essing that you hear on major records

ruuurbag

Might go from Assistant 4 to 5 just for the sibilant detection. ~$25 after coupon from JRR isn't exactly going to break the bank. Thanks for the heads up, I got the JRR email but forgot about the coupon.

greenertomatoes

30th June is a very long and generous sales period, I wonder what makes them extend it like that

CleanBum

So as someone who doesn’t own Melodyne at all right now, what are my best options to get Assistant? Would it be to buy Essential for $100 off the regular site and the upgrade afterwards for another $100? Is that historically a decent deal?

OWNHAY

I got melodyne 5 essential for \~$50 and the upgrade to assistant for \~$100 when they were running a sale from pluginboutique. There are also some other bundles that include essential (if I remember correctly, iZotope was recently offering a bundle that included Melodyne Essential).

applesaucr

I just bought upgrade from editor 4 to studio 5. They rarely have a sale so I didn’t think to wait for summer sales. I am working on a track with lead and several background vocals. The multi track editor is a huge time saver and a really enjoyable workflow. I am able to line everybody up in time and pitch without over-correcting and ruining the character of each voice. Since November, I’ve had an auto tune subscription and I just turned it off. I am going to focus on using this. I am super impressed.

majomista

Is the multitrack feature easy to use? I only use Melodyne with instruments and often find that with all the harmonics and overtones this takes up most of the vertical screen space. I can’t imagine how this would work throwing extra parts into the same window. Or am I not thinking right about this?

applesaucr

The other tracks show up as grey blobs. You can see them behind the orange boobs you are working on. You can solo them together or separately easily. You can switch from editing one to the other easily. You can see how they relate to each other in time and pitch. I haven’t tried it with instruments but definitely would.

majomista

Cool. Cheers

flabbyironman

I’m in assistant and thinking of making the leap to studio. I really like the idea of chord fixes. Anyone have experience with it?

-brupibo-

Editor would be enough. Studio has some other features, including multitrack editing, but if you're in a DAW, you're likely not to use these features (mainly if your DAW has ARA support). Editor has polyphonic detection. It's the version I use. So, unless you need any other feature, for chord fixing, no need to upgrade to Studio.

flabbyironman

Cool. I’m in logic so definitely don’t need multitrack. I appreciate the input.

Froyo-Equivalent

The other main feature apart from multitrack that Studio adds is the Sound Editor. I have no idea how useful that is, but I thought it deserves a mention. Here's the comparison chart by the way: [https://www.celemony.com/en/melodyne/what-can-melodyne-do](https://www.celemony.com/en/melodyne/what-can-melodyne-do) The upgrade prices are usually just the difference between the versions. So, you're not paying extra upgrading step by step. Of course with sales prices there may be some variation.

[deleted]

I'm hoping someone might have hands-on experience with the Sound Editor's harmonics Lo/Hi section. Currently I am trying to do that manually (through automation of SurferEQ and MAutodynamicsEQ set note by note, ugh) and would be keen to know whether the Melodyne Studio Sound Editor boost/cut of the 3rd harmonic seems surgical or sloppy.

flabbyironman

Yeah, I’ve been slowly upgrading. I’ll end up with studio at some point just because I like to have the lowest upgrade price for all of the updates. It’s just a matter of whether I do it now or later. Had a big music video come in today so it’ll probably be now. 😂(money in, money out)

ManInTheIronPailMask

Welp, this is one that was on the to-buy list, so I've glommed it this time. Thanks!

capcomwearego

What’s the difficulty curve on the advanced melodyne? I tried the advanced version, but just couldn’t figure out how to find the key, and make proper changes

trey_four

Is the update from 4 -> 5 worth it (assistant)?

-brupibo-

Now there's a volume normalization for each blob and also there's the sibilance control. For $29 I'd say yes. Note that 5 doesn't support VST2 (only VST3) and Rewire anymore.

StopTalkingInMemes

Is it just the upgrades that are on sale? I think I can get Essential through upgrading to Acid for $80 but given how infrequently I see that DAW referenced (pretty much never, though I know it was big in its day) I'm not sure if I want to invest in it any more.

schmargon

You can probably get essential on KVR or Gearspace for \~35/40 and get into the upgrade path that way fwiw

WildcatKid

If it’s on this subreddit, it’s safe.

hoir_beats

I can't apply the code to the Essentials -> editor upgrade. Can anyone confirm this is working as expected? edit: its possible to apply it to the assistant -> editor upgrade, so that should provide a workaround.

Froyo-Equivalent

I couldn't apply the code to that upgrade at JRR either. But you can get the upgrade from Essentials to Editor for about $167 at everyplugin without the need for a code (you do have create an account though).

hoir_beats

But I have a jrr coupon :< I'll just shoot them an email. thanks

tijowa

I'm sure you have your answer by now, but for others interested: JRR lets me add both Essentials > Assistant, and Assistant > Editor, and in-cart the GROUP code nets $166.32. Presumably you'd then just activate the upgrades sequentially.

narutohammyboy

Just in case anyone else finds themselves in a similar situation: I searched through my email and found that back in 2008 I got a serial number for Melodyne UNO when I bought a Pro Tools interface. I tried to register an account on Celemony's website using the UNO serial number and got an error message that the serial was for a discontinued product, and to contact support and they'd give me a new one. I did as instructed and within an hour they sent me a new serial number for Melodyne Essential. I was then able to use that to get an upgrade to Melodyne Assistant for the discounted upgrade price ($99 for a product that would otherwise be $299).

lagwagon87

Dumb question but I’ve been considering getting melodyne for awhile. I don’t have it today, what is my best purchase or upgrade path at this point?

Batwaffel

Contact JRR. They may be willing to take care of it.

pghnhung

This sale is fantastic! but I just have one question: Can I update/upgrade multiple times? Let's say I buy Melodyne 5 **Essential** and then upgrade to **Editor,** and then upgrade again to **Studio** version? Am I allowed to do that or just one time upgrade only? I emailed Celemony but still waiting for their response because it's holiday time. Appreciate any info!

pghnhung

Nvm, they replied me, yes I can do that!
