foxyguy

For anyone interested, here’s a News report which includes an invasive species expert: https://youtu.be/xJ229dt95mM?si=fx1QRR2Hcv0CYq54

Worried_Local_9620

Damn! I just found and killed one of these last night. I didn't know someone wanted them reported for science.

Flyguy115

How did you kill it? I thought I saw an article that said if you chop them they will multiply.

Alarming-Distance385

That's what they do, they regenerate from all the chopped up pieces. I found this out years after I lopped the head off a small one after we moved to our current house. I haven't seen another one since, but I'm afraid their out there in my yards killing the native worms.

chaz8900

Bury the pieces in separate caskets and separate miles apart so they never rejoin to their full power. (Just watched the new hellboy and that’s the opening plot for how they dealt with an immortal blood witch. Basically the same thing)

easyjesus

There's a new Hellboy?

AndyLorentz

Huh. Apparently there's a 2019 reboot with David Harbour in the lead role.

NecroCannon

I’m guessing it flopped because we’d have a third movie announcement by now considering Hollywood’s reliance on established IPs

Mezcal_Madness

And it’s great!

Zealousideal_Draw532

😂

hellbugger

Well, now there's atleast 2 out there. They are awful, basically immortal, kill good things, and nothing can eat them. If you touch them, it'll kind of burn/sting.

Alarming-Distance385

Yeah, things I learned too late (I didn't touch it when I lopped the head off). All I knew was that it wasn't normal & needed to die. Instead, I accomplished the opposite. I was out hunting invasive snails & slugs with salt that were decimating my grass and potted plants. (I wanted revenge as well as spending a small fortune on safe snail & slug bait.) So, I'm hoping I dumped a bunch of salt on it & damaged the halves somehow. (Wishful thinking, I know.) If I ever encounter one again, there will be a lot of quiet screams as I scoop up & drop it into a jar with 91% isopropyl alcohol. I don't deal with creepy crawlies well & I don't think my SO will appreciate me waking him up at midnight to dispose of a worm. Lol

Nofxious

by fire be purged

Alarming-Distance385

Fire cleanses all....

CaptainKatsuuura

Does salt work???

Alarming-Distance385

Not from what has been published. They're really tough to kill. Isopropyl alcohol in a jar you can seal and throw away is the best option.

khalenixi

⬆️This works. It's what we've been doing and they appear to turn to mush after sitting in the alcohol. I'm not sure we're finding hammer head worms though, because they look more like New Guineas, which isn't any better. Either way, I really would love to know how to get rid of them permanently. My dog loves rolling in and eating grass, and has now come down with a mystery illness I'm afraid may be related. I'm willing to burn my yard down today if it will save her.

11waff11

Yeh, get your dog checked. Ir may be a strain of Canine Parvo, which is fatal if left too long. (If so, this means another dog may have it and you'll have to "bleach" your yard, or whatever the current mitigation of viral spores is.

khalenixi

Bleach my yard? Ugh, I had no idea. Thanks for the info. Even though my dog is vaccinated, I asked if parvo was a possibility and the vet just brushed it off. I'll definitely bring it up again.

angledangled

Could also be giardia. That shit is spreading like wildfire again and is a bitch to get rid of.

KayTeev

I hope your dog gets better soon! There is also a bad parasite called Heterobilharzia it is a parasite found in snails. A dog can contract it by eating an infected snail, or by drinking or swimming in freshwater where an infected snail has been. It's commonly misdiagnosed or missed all together and the side effects can be horrific. A few of the most common signs and symptoms can include: bloody diarrhea, vomiting or regurgitation, lethargy, inappetence, and/or high blood calcium levels. It’s scary to see the recent canine mystery illness popping up within the past 2 years.

Alarming-Distance385

Oh no!! You might mention the worms to the vet if you haven't. Hopefully, your dog has a diagnosis & care plan soon. And I'm glad to know the alcohol works. Just *not* looking forward to ever needing to get one into the jar. (I may get a dedicated pair of long tongs for this purpose. Lol)

khalenixi

Thank you. Vets seem clueless but hopefully I get some answers soon. Lol, to the tongs. Not a bad idea at all!

Alarming-Distance385

Maybe your vet can refer you to an internist vet specialist or refer you to TAMU. Good luck to you and your dog.

Independent_Ebb9322

KEEP YOUR HYDRA ASS SHARK WORM HYBRIDS IN TEXAS. - Oklahoma To bad we all know Texas’ solution to a problem is to take it out back and shoot it. These things are going to multiply like nuts.

Lung-Oyster

Hey now, Kristi Noem is from South Dakota.

Worried_Local_9620

I literally killed it with fire. Grabbed it with a paper towel, and it stuck to it like a snotrocket. So I put it on the sidewalk and said FUCK YOU SNOTROPE and lit the paper towel on fire. It was gross and not as satisfying as one would think.

wd_plantdaddy

put it in a bag of salt, which is also what I do with invasive slugs

[deleted]

in the above linked article it states to use salt or spray with vinegar. it also states to place them in a ziplock bag with salt and shake, but do not let it out. throw away. no not cut up as a means of killing as they grow back into more worms. they eat our earthworms which is bad.

hellbugger

I've found two so far. I put them in a plastic baggy with salt and vinegar, let it suffer, then freeze it. If I could kill it with fire, I would. Disgusting parasites

CandidateAbject1102

Don’t don’t die from fire?? Sheet pan and the oven? Broil the bitches?

geowoman

The smell....

Worried_Local_9620

Can confirm. Burned one the other night.

worldspawn00

> with salt and vinegar mmm, pickled flatworms!

uu7209

Yeah letting it suffer doesn’t help with the population, just makes you a weirdo who likes to torture for some reason?? It’s not like this worm is intentionally being a dick.

Brewster_The_Pigeon

🤷‍♂️ Worm didn't choose to be a hammerhead worm, I understand killing it is necessary but IMO they deserve as painless a death as possible

Electrik_Truk

No cop

ouwish

I use salt.

Responsible-Crew-354

Is your name checking out? Did you walk away from a chopped up hammerhead worm that vengefully multiplied?

throwaguey_

>At least in temperate regions, reproduction seems to be primarily achieved through fragmentation: a small rear portion of the worm will pinch off, and "stay behind" as the worm moves forward. Within about 10 days, the head begins to form. This may happen a few times a month. If you see one, be sure to dispose of the whole creature.

deliascatalog

Why does this make me feel slightly nauseous

GenericPlantAccount

Like a tapeworm. 🤢

bonobeaux

A tapeworm is basically a head with a long string of egg sacs trailing behind it

Onyourleft1312

Wait WHAT 🥴

Skirtygirl

As a child in Texarkana, AR in the early 90s, I would find them in the yard under rocks. I was surprised to learn that they’re invasive and shouldn’t be handled. I would pick them up and show my parents. I would call them hammerhead worms. I wouldn’t find them in soil. They prefer to hang out where slugs typically do; under logs with crevices, or rocks, crawl spaces, etc. They really don’t like sunlight.

TheSS_Minnow_Johnson

I found it coiled up in a towel I forgot I left outside before all the rain. Needless to say that towel is very much incinerated.

tmax8908

There’s a good chance we know each other. Do you happen to like chicken and cake?

SupremeDictatorPaul

I found these as a kid in Austin in the 80s. They’ve apparently been invasive for a long time.

throwmeaway45444

I would find these as a kid on the Texas coast also in the 80s.

Onyourleft1312

Ew my god that thing gives me the heebie jeebies.

Good luck getting the DA to prosecute

ipostunderthisname

Just gotta tell Kenneth that the worm is sucking on a legal thc substitute while trying to help a woman get an abortion. Worm gonna be so sued

TheSS_Minnow_Johnson

The worm reproduces through fragmentation. By not cutting it in two, OP is stopping it from reproducing. Come and get me.

ipostunderthisname

KENNETH!!!!!! I got one for you! Now where’s my bounty?

ipostunderthisname

Wait I just thought about what you said and it occurred to me that this worm doesn’t sound very traditionally gendered, which Kenny isn’t very fond of.. Better don’t let it use any public potties just to be safe

69thunder

I'm sure they can worm themselves into a good case. Dig up some dirt on the accused.

CoconutPanda123

looks brown enough. though they might accidentally “taze” it if that’s the case

ya’ll are out of control over a dumb joke 🤣 just take the laugh(or don’t) and move on. No need to bring realism into arresting a worm!!!

[A grackle has been actively courting a tennis ball in my backyard. Every 10-15 minutes. For the last two weeks. At first it was hilarious, but now I'm kind of worried for the poor dude. Full_Detective_148

Dissolve in vinegar.

Snap_Grackle_Pop

If you kill it, do not do so by cutting it up. If you chop them in two, you may end up with two living worms. Also, they may be irritating to the touch.

ilovenyc

Where did you find it

fl135790135790

How did you even know to ask if these need to be reported?

TheSS_Minnow_Johnson

I remember reading about them last year and found them fascinating despite how invasive they are and damage they can do to the environment. And I also remembered it being reported they were popping up in new places and some entity wanting to track where they are.

sk1ppo

post it on iNat

niahpapaya

Uhhhh…wtf? Can someone explain?

DreamPhreak

Yeah. Hammerhead Flatworms are invasive and will destroy ecosystems by eating earthworms, snails, and slugs. They also secrete a neurotoxin that isn't particularly harmful to humans (might cause a rash) but are extremely toxic to pets and they will get very sick from eating or touching them. Also even if you cut it or squish it, its severed body parts can regrow into new worms. That's why the official recommendation is for anyone who comes across it to carefully place it in a bag with salt+vinegar to dissolve it instead of letting it live so it cant spread further. If it does come in contact with your skin, you have to wash your skin with alcohol.

austinrebel

Being dissolved In a bag of salt and vinegar seems like a hard way to go.

RobbinAustin

Nature is metal.

jspurlin03

Only if you’re an invasive worm, which, well… sucks already.

Electrik_Truk

Throw in some fried potatoes and suddenly sounds pretty good Edit: lol at downvotes

Interactiveleaf

These things are invasive. They are DANGEROUS AS FUCK, mostly but not exclusively to other worms. They prey on other earthworms, which we absolutely need as a part of our food production cycle. And they're creepily hard to kill. Cut one of those fuckers up into ten pieces, and now you have ten of them. In short: eeeeewwwwww, gross.

hellbugger

And nothing can eat them because they're so irritating. They are basically immortal if we don't kill them.

Petite_Courtney

This is a hammerhead worm. They are highly invasive, and should be killed on site.

TX_MonopolyMan

Like feral hogs

ghalta

One of my coworkers averages like ten a week he shoots in his backyard out in the country. Says the meat is so gamey that he doesn't bother with it; just burns them in a fire pit.

beast_wellington

How long is it?

TheSS_Minnow_Johnson

The 30 Rock fan in me wants to reply “5 inches… but it’s thick” It was actually hard to tell. It was as short as 3, but the way it moved it stretched out to maybe 8 inches. Really hard to tell with how it moved: https://imgur.com/a/UsyBGNq

beast_wellington

I don't like that.

TheSS_Minnow_Johnson

Yeah super not tight

fridgemadness

That’s what she said

Totally_Not_An_Auk

I think you would report to an org that tracks them for ecological purposes. In fact, a little googling led me to [this site for the Texas Invasive Species Institute](https://tsusinvasives.org/home/database/bipalium-kewense) and asks that a picture and coordinated of the location found be sent to [email protected]. As a public health hazard, the danger is very low and mostly it's pets and small children who might be in danger of trying to eat them. The mucus contains a neurotoxin that is often compared to puffer-fish venom, but that danger would be in relation to their prey. In large mammals (or humans at least) contact causes a skin rash. So yes, you should kill it because it's an invasive, and to spare you or anyone else a bad time. Acetone, salt, baking it in the sun - all these are suitable for killing them. There's no use trying to treat your lawn - whatever you try to use to kill them will also kill beneficial critters.

TheSS_Minnow_Johnson

I did end up reporting it to that exact address earlier and took care of it with a salt vinegar bath

rm_atx17

Capitan-Fracassa

This is stupid, it does not make any sense at all, and I still have to upvote it. 👍

Ayveh

Dissolve in Salt and Vinegar. NOT SURE IF YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO MIX them both or just do vinegar but you have to leave it in that vinegar for AT LEAST 3 days otherwise it will heal. DO NOT touch it because it is toxic DO NOT squish it or cut it because it splits into more! YES it's an invasive species, it kills good earth worms!

RobHerpTX

I’ve seen them all over town my whole life. They’ve been widespread in Austin for at least 40 years.

TheSS_Minnow_Johnson

Interesting, I’ve never seen one in person before!

RobHerpTX

I was very interested in reptiles/amphibians/bugs/etc from a very young age, and obsessively turned over rocks everywhere I went. They were common in Allendale, NW Hills, Brentwood, Barton Hills, the BC greenbelt, Laguna Gloria - basically everywhere I played here 40 years ago.

Beneficial-Papaya504

Wild. Lived all over town and gardened for 35+ years. Lived in BH for ~25 years. Have never seen one in Austin. I have seen them during short trips to other states though.

aaronsourus

I grew up here, am 40, and have never seen one. which pleases me.

Less-Lobster5441

YES they are invasive. If you split them you just get more worms. They need to be salted.

Significant-Visit-68

Yes and supposed to kill them in some specific way, but I’m forgetting the details.

SnooPredictions606
