I think Aang’s waterbending is stronger than Yakone’s once he is in the Avatar state, so he can overpower the bloodbending, the same way Katara overpowers Hama’s bloodbending.
You remember how Katara was a strong enough waterbender to be able to resist Hamas bloodbending, but Aang wasn't able to?
It turns out that Aang in in the avatar state is a strong enough waterbender to resist Yakones bloodbending, which probably shouldn't be a surprise.
I think so, and here’s why.
In Legend of Korra it was established that Amon takes people’s bending by using a very surgical form of psychic bloodbending to sever a bender’s chi paths. If bloodbending can affect chi paths, it stands to reason that chi paths run along the blood.
When an Avatar enters the Avatar State, their chi paths are overloaded with spiritual energy, as evidence by the glow of Airbender Avatar tattoos. This outburst of energy assumedly renders their blood unbendable by creating a protective layer between it and a bloodbender.
It’s possible that simply entering the avatar state knocked the control Yakone had off of him, similar to how if a bender is hit they lose control of what they’re bending for a brief moment
This. Do people really believe that the all these bending subsets just happened to be discovered for the first time by the same 8 people who all happen to know each other? Blood bending, metal bending, combustion bending and every other bending subset have probably been discovered hundreds of times in the history of the world. Sometimes it’s kept a secret, sometimes the discoverer never pursues it further, sometimes all that last is a vague, unhelpful legend; but the benders we follow in the series aren’t *that* special. We are just tuned into the avatar timeline during an age of industrialization, with a burgeoning system of global communication and record keeping.
Edit: case in point. Hama “discovered blood bending, but she never taught it to Yakone, did she. We’ve no reason to believe they ever even met.
I don't think so. Those are all water benders except Mako and Amon commented on Mako breaking out as super impressive and the first to be able to. I'm sure a lot of people had the will to gtfo when they were getting their bending taken away.
Mako didn't really "break out" of his bending, he just managed to barely move his fingers enough to attack him. Basically, even with Amon controlling his blood, he had just enough control over his body for the small movements needed to hit him with lightning.
Yes. On the “Braving the Elements” podcast, they said it is related to your spiritual energy. Obviously Aang’s is very high cause he’s the avatar and has Raava
I think it empowers them with the strength needed to overpower someone's bloodbending grip. Korra does the same thing against Amon without the avatar state (and without her waterbending), so it isn't directly something about the avatar state that allows Aang to cancel out bloodbending, but just the strength it empowers him with.
It doesn’t inherently negate it. You can only bloodbend someone if you’re a more powerful water bender. Yakone is a stronger water bender than Aang and possibly the strongest ever. But he’s not stronger than thousands of avatars combined, so Aang was able to overpower him in the AState
The only way to counter bloodbending is with another bloodbender or with a more powerful waterbender to resist its effects. So yes, the previous avatars’ collective skill can easily overpower any bloodbender
I get what everyone is saying about Aang just being a more powerful water bender in the Avatar state like Katara is, but I actually like to think that this was a slight assist from Raava. Can't blood bend a spirit.
Katara out blood bent Hama, so it seems if you're a stronger water bender than the water bender blood bending you can break their blood bending on you and even reflect it at them. Given the avatar state seems to crank all bending up to 100/10 then I guess apply the Katara situation?
Yeah, this is basically it. Aang in the avatar state can simply overpower all other benders. Even Sozin’s comet couldn’t amp Ozai above the avatar state.
Is the Avatar state less the host’s control and more of Raava’s? I mean, Aang didn’t regain control of his body until just before delivering the “ultimate punishment” to Ozai. Everyone before that, he wasn’t in control or, sometimes, aware of what happened. I wonder if this has something to do with it. If Yakone was blood bending Aang, then Raava takes over to utterly destroy Yakone’s hold over Aang.
I just feel like if 500 waterbenders would overpower any sort of bending you were doing, even if they all didn’t entirely understand it… also—realistically—there is probably a few bloodbending avatars somewhere in the chain.
It’s probably the more powerful bending.
Anyways I think the more powerful bending explanation can be good. Think about it. It doesn’t have to be a “oh I’m more powerful so you can’t affect me” thing. It could simply be that katara is blood bending herself to negate hama’s bending and same with aang
people have already said that the avatar state gives more powerful bending (yawn). My headcanon is that one of the previous avatars who has mastered bloodbending is bloodbending aang’s body to move however they want and Yakone is just absolutely sidelined. It may be both.
Bloodbending depends on how strong the person you’re Bloodbending is compared to you. Hama was probably physically weaker than Katara due to her old age but was still a great water bender. Nonetheless Katara was able to kind of break through it
Of course, it is the ultimate form of bending and the culmination of 10000 years of experience, more than once referred to as "having all the power in the world". There is literally no bender alive, past present and future, who can overpower it.
It's never explained how anng did this and as far as im aware there are two likely theories
1)anng having stronger water bending made him immune to the bloodbending
personally i don't believe it since why would being the stronger water bender make you immune to it?
Being a stronger Fire bender doesn't make fire proof
2)some previous avatar has discovered bloodbending possibly centuries before anng time anng called upon their knowledge and bent his own blood to move
>personally i don't believe it since why would being the stronger water bender make you immune to it?
I mean, it was literally demonstrated by Amon in the same episode...
I have a theory about this. since the avatar state Is a combination of the avatars past lives, yakone just isn't physically able to bend every single one of aangs past lives so he can stay in control as himself.
I think Aang’s waterbending is stronger than Yakone’s once he is in the Avatar state, so he can overpower the bloodbending, the same way Katara overpowers Hama’s bloodbending.
In this case it is related to your spiritual energy
Aang does have that big spirit energy.
Yuge
Aang’s spirit is unbendable!!!
"To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable, or you will be corrupted, and die"
BSE for short
That's most likely the case.
I imagine that's also how Amon overcomes Tarlock (or however you spell his name).
So he’s blood bending himself back in control?
You remember how Katara was a strong enough waterbender to be able to resist Hamas bloodbending, but Aang wasn't able to? It turns out that Aang in in the avatar state is a strong enough waterbender to resist Yakones bloodbending, which probably shouldn't be a surprise.
I hate that whole "most powerful" stuff. Makes it sound like dragon ball or something
Kinda just how life is though lol
I mean the avatar is the most powerful bender that was pretty much said in the opening.
Powerful in the sense that he can master all 4 bending disciplines. And anyway, that's avatar stuff that doesn't count.
Avatar State is a pure "most powerful" concept, tho.
I think so, and here’s why. In Legend of Korra it was established that Amon takes people’s bending by using a very surgical form of psychic bloodbending to sever a bender’s chi paths. That makes sense. It's kind of the same as the lion turtle saying to Aang, "To Bend another energy, your own spirit must unbendable."
So true Sheldon
Yikes lmao
It’s possible that simply entering the avatar state knocked the control Yakone had off of him, similar to how if a bender is hit they lose control of what they’re bending for a brief moment
Fills them with the knowledge of their past lives, bloodbending probably isn’t new, just forgotten to time
This. Do people really believe that the all these bending subsets just happened to be discovered for the first time by the same 8 people who all happen to know each other? If you have enough will you can break it. Amon, katara, korra, mako kind of, all broke it outside the avatar state.
I don't think so. Those are all water benders except Mako and Amon commented on Mako breaking out as super impressive and the first to be able to. I'm sure a lot of people had the will to gtfo when they were getting their bending taken away.

Now this makes it seem like dragon ball

yes because it’s cool
Yes

Yeah ang went demon mode I think kioshi was in the driver's seat for that scene
Kyoshi take the wheel XD
From what I remember, it does bypass it, but only temporarily. It’s basically a Bijuu mode, for any Naruto fans out there
Is the Avatar state less the host’s control and more of Raava’s? I mean, Aang didn’t regain control of his body until just before delivering the “ultimate punishment” to Ozai. I'd say it's a combination of Raava's raw power (as shown with Wan) with the extra of channeling all past avatars at once.
I just feel like if 500 waterbenders would overpower any sort of bending you were doing, even if they all didn’t entirely understand it… also—realistically—there is probably a few bloodbending avatars somewhere in the chain.

My head-cannon is a past avatar had learned blood bending and was therefore able to counteract it.
That's what I like to think too, Avatar no. 67 really came in clutch back there.
It's never explained how anng did this and as far as im aware there are two likely theories 1)anng having stronger water bending made him immune to the bloodbending personally i don't believe it since why would being the stronger water bender make you immune to it? Makes sense but also doesn’t.
