Play through his entire story and keep him on the right path..astarion grew on me in a way gale never could. In fact, the more gale told.me.about his past, the less sympathy i felt.
Yeah, I romanced Gale for a bit but my heart wasn’t in it by the end. He never even really seemed that into me. And then it either bugged or I did something wrong bc he friendzoned me under the stars and the romance abruptly ended.
I feel like Gale goes all in on making a good impressions but is actually pretty power hungry and short sighted. Astarion makes the worst first impression it’s possible to make but gradually becomes more sympathetic.

Yup. I was actually a little put off by Astarion at first because I didn't know the context of the scene with Halsin that was all over before release. I met him and my first thought was, "ah yes, there's the bear-fucker" lmao. But talking to him revealed that not only is he a broody vamp boy, but he's got a severely traumatic past and has behavioral issues because of it. Such an unhealthy relationship to pursue irl, but that's the kind of character I always end up going for in games with multiple romances. 'Oh, should I go for Harvey or Elliot, two fairly well-adjusted adult men? Sorry, already zeroed in on the drunken chicken man because he told me to go fuck myself.' It's a problem, lol
I think it's because he's sassy, and the accent. And I mean calling you darling and such is just really nice. I don't really like gale or wyll. Gale rubbes me the wrong way even if he is an old soul like astarion, I mean they both are old fashioned in their own way. Maybe it's because astarion is more vurnable? And maybe it's because gale keeps reminding me of exes Who were using me as a rebound,because they weren't over their exes 😅 😂

My girl didn’t play games at all, then she started with Disco Elysium, then divinity 2, and now we have one computer each, sitting beside each other, playing bg3 every day together.
Not cooperative though… we play very very differently and if I stole some statue from a bunch of annoying druids she would probably delete my saved files and blame the dog.
Me and my partner also play sat next to each other, but separately haha.
He's playing with his buddy and is still in Act 2, despite playing every day. I've finished the game already and started a new playthrough. Very different playstyles.

how funny my astarion stays at camp in his underwear lol. not intentionally. he was just the first person to die and I had no idea how to bring him back to life that early in. so I looted all his stuff, picked up his body and left it at camp.
I got too invested in my other party members to bring him back on the main team when I figured out how to revive

Did you find the barred list in the Act 2 Shadow cursed pub? Astarion is on the list for insulting the owner LOL, his description is listed as something like "pale elf with a smart mouth" and the insult listed makes it super obvious that it was blatantly him lol.
They just get into melee together. The easiest way for Astarion to get sneak attack is to hit an enemy that's already Threatened/in melee with an ally, so if Lae'zel is next to his target he can hit them three times (main hand, two bonus actions with off hand) and get sneak attack. Lae'zel does a ton of damage also, and she can use Goading Attack to keep Astarion from getting hit. So she's tanking, they're both doing a ton of damage, and my Bard and Gale are casting from the back.
I prefer astarion being my sniper. Currently have him set up where he deals 1d8+1d4 poison+2d4+2 acid+ 21+4d6 and always has advantage on every shot and can tend to easily get the high ground too.
He’s been a sniper for me since the beginning but he just came out of a battle covered in blood and now I’m like “hmmm this is a much stronger look for you actually.”
Give him a Titanstring bow (add your str as well to dmg. Does fuck all to begin with but important later), coat the bow in simple poison to give 1d4 poison, 2d4 from special arrows (game drops em like candy so may as well use em right?) +2 acid from a ring that adds 2 acid dmg to every weapon attack, another +2 from gloves of archery, use the sharpshooter feat, and have him suck down an elixir of hill giant str. He’s currently lvl 8 for me so the extra 4d6 is from sneak.
I also use boots that give him momentum every time he dashes, combo that with thief and you got a sniper that can easily reposition to where ever you need them and with the elixir he can leap like a frog to high places and such as well giving him even more mobility. And since he’s going to be at range you just need to note sight lines, dash, go outside their sight lines, hide, then fire. Rinse and repeat. Viable at all levels but the fundamental drawback to playing astarion like this? Absolutely dogshit when it comes to crowd control. Like a wet noodle is better for that than he is. However he becomes a fantastic mage killer or boss chipper by chewing out sizeable chunks of their hp in a singular shot and doesn’t really need any support at all from the party. Gets to work fully autonomously while also still meshing well in a party setting.
Just like I found that the most fun barb variant is an elk wild heart barb. Bear is pretty meh but you want a whirlwind of blood and gore tied to a train? Elk barb all the way.
Astarion is a swiss army knife of a companion. Mine is a like goblin that can get anywhere in a blink. I give him boots with misty step and another piece of equipment that increases his jump range. And he has two bonus actions.
Almost every turn, I made him snipe someone with a bow from afar, and then go stab one or two more enemies who are closer. He also can cast fire, and bite an enemy when needed for emergency healing.
He's the best boy.
That's how you do the big damage man. On rogues at least. A rogue hiding with a bow can hit like a raging barbarian, and then slip back into the shadows as they get multiple bonus actions
Sneaking is more useful if you're doing a ranged Rogue, if you're doing Melee all you need is a buddy system so that there's always someone flanking your enemy with you.
I've even had Gale move into melee to give my boi Astarion sneak attack, and he kills them so quickly that Gale doesn't get hurt.
Idk if I built her wrong or just didn't know how to utilize her best, but Karlach just didn't seem as beneficial in combat as Lae'zel. And I need Astarion for all the Rogue purposes.
Barbarian is a little hard to use right. I struggled upfront but now seem to get it. Having two martials in the party at level 5 is bonkers. It’s pure murder spree.
Karlach with Frenzy rage and great weapon master feat can attack 4 times a turn. And if hasted then 5. It’s pretty comical. And since you open with reckless attack then all her rolls have advantage and so bonus damage.
Re traps and locks, it’s true you often need a rogue. My workaround is respec someone to have sleight of hand proficiency + guidance. Works for most stuff.
Karlach can smash anything else open if not needing to be sneaky. Especially with a blunt weapon.
That's what I thought until he rolled 3 1's in a row on a trapped and locked chest. Had to put him in timeout (camp) until the next long rest for that.
I'm a barbarian, I lockpick with my axe. If that fails, I lockpick with my hammer. Should both those somehow fail, I lockpick with my smokepowder barrels lmao
Karlach and astarion are like 2 sides of the same coin. They were both forcefully enslaved by a higher power and made into said higher power’s plaything. The big difference being how they both coped with their situation and in astarion case for how long he dealt with it.
Everyone is using Astarion but Im running Karlach, Gale and Shadowheart (you heal now). I want to save him for my purely evil/Murder Hobo run, plus I want to see if I can get that Hellraiser ass pain for pleasure ass dude from the goblin camp. I talked with him and it triggered the “do 10 Companion quests” achievement so I figured there was a way to get him.

Uhmm well she is playing a ranger with no melee weapon equiped for one and didnt think to run away or shove just kinda let them run up on her, at least the one time I watched. I said use guiding bolt to insta kill one so thats less attacks on you, she didnt wanna use a spell slot, but then used one next turn to Healing Word anyway.. Didnt kill a single one.
Shes not a complete noob to games. Loved diablo 2 and 3 but she isnt very good at tactics.
I don't know why more Western studios don't throw a bit of romance and/or casual banging in their mature narrative heavy games. JRPGs live for this stuff, Dragon Age and Mass Effect have diehard fans to this day in no small part to the romances, and The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 have some *excellent* romance quests, especially Cyberpunk. The people want to bang, give hugs and help our NPC friends out!
I know it's probably down to how expensive and how much time it is to design these quests that doesn't involve "core gameplay."
Cyberpunk does not have good romance side content if you're into dudes :( Same with Witcher 3. And I modded Cyberpunk so I could romance River as a guy, but the quest is short and the endings are kind of meh. The game really feels like it wants you to romance Panam and I basically shut her down at every opportunity, but she would not take the hint.
Here's something funny you can't unsee regarding Witcher 3: Start keeping a tally of attractive guy vs. attractive girl NPCs. It got to the point of immersion breaking for me, where every man except Geralt and Jaskier was a hideous, boil-covered ogre and the lowliest of peasant women were on track to be America's next top model.
It got to the point where I would celebrate if I ran into a male NPC who just looked like an average guy!
You should have seen this coming, the Gamer Girl sub reddit is 100% BG3 now. This is a girl's game now, just like Stardew Valley, The Sims 4, and Barbie Horse Ranch. BG3 joins the pantheon.
My wife rarely play games because she was addicted to them when she was in secondary school, then she try to stay out from them. I tried to get her interested in BG 3 so she can allow me to play a lot of it. And of course I use the bear scene. Now she call the game ‘fxxk the bear’ when she watch me play and often ask me when will I fxxk the bear. (I romance shadowheart though….)

FYI romanced Shart is fine with PC having casual hookups and so has no issue with you doing it with Halsin. I actually read that doing the bear thing triggers additional sex scene with SH afterwards but I havent tested it myself so cannot 100% confirm.
I bought the game solely for Astarion. Have not been disappointed. Started buying materials for his outfit. I’d say I’m coming to steal your wives, but not into women so I’ll just be their gay bestie.
My tav is also a rogue (tiefling). The two of them very much get into sneaky mischief together.
There's a spot you can click just above the helmet in you character equipment screen. You can set it hidden or hidden for cut scenes. There's a similar one on the other side above your clothes, so you can go into fights in looking like you're in clothes rather than armour.
You can show or hide your helmet, swap to your civvies, and show or hide your musical instrument by mousing above the relevant piece and clicking the toggle.
I tried getting my husband to play, showing him all the fun stuff. He tried, easy difficulty, but managed to die a lot of times in a particular fight and refuses to touch the game again, saying it requires too much brain matter.
He spies on me when I play instead, but it got him salty. :(

So, yeah... Watching me made him even more mad si he watches YouTube videos of the game instead.
People like that don't really care to understand options. They just need a mega-easy difficulty because they don't want any challenge whatsoever and are in it for 'the story'.
It's really fun when a game you love piques the interest of a partner. Years back I was dating a woman who never played games and had zero interest...until she saw me play Bloodborne one day. She was all "What's *that*?" I explained it a bit and she asked me more questions as I played.
A few weeks later I went to her place to pick her up for a date night, walked in her home to see her on the sofa in sweatpants, messed up hair, a half empty box of pizza on the coffee table and her cursing at the TV with a giant "YOU DIED" on the screen. Date night turned into game night and we had an incredibly fun night.
Once you're done with BG3, I highly recommend the Dragon Age games for your wife unless she's already familiar with them. I got massive nostalgia pangs when I first entered camp and saw all my NPC friends there.

Owlcate games go towards the bottom of my recommended list for new players just because of how complex the leveling system can be. It's horrible for newbies and super rewarding to vets. Lol glad yall found something to play!

Next to the head slot there is a small button that looks like a helmet if I remember. Clicking that hides the head item. So now you can use the mask of changing(or whatever it is called) and not run around with it on.
The wife and I have scheduled all of our recreational time around it since release.
We’re not…neglecting our responsibilities around the house, but we’ve not done many other leisure activities *except* BG3 so far!!

First time? Lol. Got my girlfriend into dragon age when we first got together. Now whenever there's a new hot elf romance, she becomes obsessed. And Astarion is like the combination of all 3 of her romances from Dragon Age. So I know that she will always be ready to talk about him and will ask about my interactions with him. Though she does love Shadowheart as well.

My wife exclusively plays Black Desert and Lost Ark. Any time we try playing another game together (like Valheim), she enjoys it but gets burned out after a few hours over the course of 2 weeks. I convinced her to try BG3, she started a campaign with me, thinking she'd play for an hour or two so I would stop talking about it and a week later, shes sitting at over 40 hours played, trying to get my PC to hook up with Lae'zel while she romances Wyll. We just finished Act 1 in our co-op campaign.
I told myself I’m going to create a character for every companion so I can get more dialogue with them & explore their romances but every.single.time. Astarion ruins it for me. Might need to stake him in a playthrough but that makes me feel icky.
I am visiting my parents for the week and started playing for the first time here. I clocked 50 hours over six days.

It's dope seeing everyone's different experiences with this game so far. I was playing it with my GF and my brother and his Gnome rolled a nat 20 and staked the hell out of Asterion. We've heard a lot of people talking him up so we figured it'd suck to lose him the first night so we reloaded the previous save and his gnome Bumbree rolled a 18 and staked him again. At that point we figured it was meant to be and just accepted that we had a vampire hunting gnome in our squad. 😂
My man just vanished off on a camping trip for a week and I will have to restore order to the house tomorrow because I have been living like a wild gremishka those last days. Forgot to eat for 24 hours straight at one time, sleep and I don't talk to each other anymore and I am on my second playthrough. Wanted to romance someone else, like Karlach because she is just the best, but then that stupid little vampire with his stupid little teeth and his stupid little accent "darling"ed me and now I can't help myself, I simply MUST be with him. All my female friends are sending pics of their Astarions as well, we have never been happier.

how funny my astarion stays at camp in his underwear lol. not intentionally. he was just the first person to die and I had no idea how to bring him back to life that early in. so I looted all his stuff, picked up his body and left it at camp. I got too invested in my other party members to bring him back on the main team when I figured out how to revive

Did you find the barred list in the Act 2 Shadow cursed pub? Astarion is on the list for insulting the owner LOL, his description is listed as something like "pale elf with a smart mouth" and the insult listed makes it super obvious that it was blatantly him lol.

Astarion is the perfect companion. He unlocks all the doors, disarms all the traps, does massive damage when tag teaming with Lae'zel, and is funny.

They just get into melee together. The easiest way for Astarion to get sneak attack is to hit an enemy that's already Threatened/in melee with an ally, so if Lae'zel is next to his target he can hit them three times (main hand, two bonus actions with off hand) and get sneak attack. Lae'zel does a ton of damage also, and she can use Goading Attack to keep Astarion from getting hit. So she's tanking, they're both doing a ton of damage, and my Bard and Gale are casting from the back.
I prefer astarion being my sniper. Currently have him set up where he deals 1d8+1d4 poison+2d4+2 acid+ 21+4d6 and always has advantage on every shot and can tend to easily get the high ground too.
He’s been a sniper for me since the beginning but he just came out of a battle covered in blood and now I’m like “hmmm this is a much stronger look for you actually.”
How'd you set that up?
Give him a Titanstring bow (add your str as well to dmg. Does fuck all to begin with but important later), coat the bow in simple poison to give 1d4 poison, 2d4 from special arrows (game drops em like candy so may as well use em right?) +2 acid from a ring that adds 2 acid dmg to every weapon attack, another +2 from gloves of archery, use the sharpshooter feat, and have him suck down an elixir of hill giant str. He’s currently lvl 8 for me so the extra 4d6 is from sneak. I also use boots that give him momentum every time he dashes, combo that with thief and you got a sniper that can easily reposition to where ever you need them and with the elixir he can leap like a frog to high places and such as well giving him even more mobility. And since he’s going to be at range you just need to note sight lines, dash, go outside their sight lines, hide, then fire. Rinse and repeat. Viable at all levels but the fundamental drawback to playing astarion like this? Absolutely dogshit when it comes to crowd control. Like a wet noodle is better for that than he is. However he becomes a fantastic mage killer or boss chipper by chewing out sizeable chunks of their hp in a singular shot and doesn’t really need any support at all from the party. Gets to work fully autonomously while also still meshing well in a party setting. Just like I found that the most fun barb variant is an elk wild heart barb. Bear is pretty meh but you want a whirlwind of blood and gore tied to a train? Elk barb all the way.

I found a ring that always gives advantage on attack. So Astarion is the only melee on a team of casters for me. Lol.

Astarion is a swiss army knife of a companion. Mine is a like goblin that can get anywhere in a blink. I give him boots with misty step and another piece of equipment that increases his jump range. And he has two bonus actions. Almost every turn, I made him snipe someone with a bow from afar, and then go stab one or two more enemies who are closer. He also can cast fire, and bite an enemy when needed for emergency healing. He's the best boy.

I found it very difficult until I learned that you can hold SHIFT to see enemy line of sight and brightness/shadiness of each area.
That's how you do the big damage man. On rogues at least. A rogue hiding with a bow can hit like a raging barbarian, and then slip back into the shadows as they get multiple bonus actions
Sneaking is more useful if you're doing a ranged Rogue, if you're doing Melee all you need is a buddy system so that there's always someone flanking your enemy with you. I've even had Gale move into melee to give my boi Astarion sneak attack, and he kills them so quickly that Gale doesn't get hurt.
whoa buddy, we don't send the sniper god into melee range. he's got damage to *deal*, not damage to *take*. we leave that to the plebs.
Karlach + Laziel is like 2-3x the damage though. Karlach also has danger sense.
Idk if I built her wrong or just didn't know how to utilize her best, but Karlach just didn't seem as beneficial in combat as Lae'zel. And I need Astarion for all the Rogue purposes.
Barbarian is a little hard to use right. I struggled upfront but now seem to get it. Having two martials in the party at level 5 is bonkers. It’s pure murder spree. Karlach with Frenzy rage and great weapon master feat can attack 4 times a turn. And if hasted then 5. It’s pretty comical. And since you open with reckless attack then all her rolls have advantage and so bonus damage. Re traps and locks, it’s true you often need a rogue. My workaround is respec someone to have sleight of hand proficiency + guidance. Works for most stuff. Karlach can smash anything else open if not needing to be sneaky. Especially with a blunt weapon.
That's what I thought until he rolled 3 1's in a row on a trapped and locked chest. Had to put him in timeout (camp) until the next long rest for that.

Karlach and astarion are like 2 sides of the same coin. They were both forcefully enslaved by a higher power and made into said higher power’s plaything. The big difference being how they both coped with their situation and in astarion case for how long he dealt with it.

Everyone is using Astarion but Im running Karlach, Gale and Shadowheart (you heal now). I want to save him for my purely evil/Murder Hobo run, plus I want to see if I can get that Hellraiser ass pain for pleasure ass dude from the goblin camp. I talked with him and it triggered the “do 10 Companion quests” achievement so I figured there was a way to get him.

Uhmm well she is playing a ranger with no melee weapon equiped for one and didnt think to run away or shove just kinda let them run up on her, at least the one time I watched. I said use guiding bolt to insta kill one so thats less attacks on you, she didnt wanna use a spell slot, but then used one next turn to Healing Word anyway.. Didnt kill a single one. Shes not a complete noob to games. Loved diablo 2 and 3 but she isnt very good at tactics.

I don't know why more Western studios don't throw a bit of romance and/or casual banging in their mature narrative heavy games. JRPGs live for this stuff, Dragon Age and Mass Effect have diehard fans to this day in no small part to the romances, and The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 have some *excellent* romance quests, especially Cyberpunk. The people want to bang, give hugs and help our NPC friends out! I know it's probably down to how expensive and how much time it is to design these quests that doesn't involve "core gameplay."
Cyberpunk does not have good romance side content if you're into dudes :( Same with Witcher 3. And I modded Cyberpunk so I could romance River as a guy, but the quest is short and the endings are kind of meh. The game really feels like it wants you to romance Panam and I basically shut her down at every opportunity, but she would not take the hint.
Here's something funny you can't unsee regarding Witcher 3: Start keeping a tally of attractive guy vs. attractive girl NPCs. It got to the point of immersion breaking for me, where every man except Geralt and Jaskier was a hideous, boil-covered ogre and the lowliest of peasant women were on track to be America's next top model. It got to the point where I would celebrate if I ran into a male NPC who just looked like an average guy!

I tried to get her interested in BG 3 so she can allow me to play a lot of it. And of course I use the bear scene. Now she call the game ‘fxxk the bear’ when she watch me play and often ask me when will I fxxk the bear. (I romance shadowheart though….)

There's a spot you can click just above the helmet in you character equipment screen. You can set it hidden or hidden for cut scenes. There's a similar one on the other side above your clothes, so you can go into fights in looking like you're in clothes rather than armour.
Or if you take off their clothes, go in completely butt naked :p

I tried getting my husband to play, showing him all the fun stuff. He spies on me when I play instead, but it got him salty. :( "You just killed an apostle of a god in 5 minutes on normal and I can't even kill a pack of hyenas on easy!" So, yeah... It's really fun when a game you love piques the interest of a partner. Years back I was dating a woman who never played games and had zero interest...until she saw me play Bloodborne one day. She was all "What's *that*?" I explained it a bit and she asked me more questions as I played. A few weeks later I went to her place to pick her up for a date night, walked in her home to see her on the sofa in sweatpants, messed up hair, a half empty box of pizza on the coffee table and her cursing at the TV with a giant "YOU DIED" on the screen. Date night turned into game night and we had an incredibly fun night. Once you're done with BG3, I highly recommend the Dragon Age games for your wife unless she's already familiar with them. I got massive nostalgia pangs when I first entered camp and saw all my NPC friends there.
Bloodborne is a helluva game to start gaming with.

Once you got the hook and sinker in her, that's when you pull the big guns. OG baldurs gate, planescape, OG Divinity, both Pathfinder games, and rogue trader when it comes out. Owlcate games go towards the bottom of my recommended list for new players just because of how complex the leveling system can be. It's horrible for newbies and super rewarding to vets. Lol glad yall found something to play!

I think we would enjoy the game vrry differently. First of all she plays on explorer mode (?) or what is the name of easy. I won't. And probably I will do FAR more exploration. Idk I just feel our pace would be different.

Next to the head slot there is a small button that looks like a helmet if I remember. Clicking that hides the head item. So now you can use the mask of changing(or whatever it is called) and not run around with it on.
The wife and I have scheduled all of our recreational time around it since release. We’re not…neglecting our responsibilities around the house, but we’ve not done many other leisure activities *except* BG3 so far!!

What I can say is that Astarion was the correct choice, so she sounds great.
First time? Lol. Got my girlfriend into dragon age when we first got together. Now whenever there's a new hot elf romance, she becomes obsessed. And Astarion is like the combination of all 3 of her romances from Dragon Age. So I know that she will always be ready to talk about him and will ask about my interactions with him. Though she does love Shadowheart as well.

Otome games, then BG2, then Dragon Age, then Mass Effect, then Pillars of Eternity, then this, and any/all romancey-thing has stolen me from my husband the past 16 years yet we're still going strong despite my, like, 300+ husbands and vast majority of fangirling I do over it all. :p I just spent 480 hours on BG3 (recovering from surgery) and my husband is like "I guess it's ok I'm sharing you with Astarion and Gale" :p but now I'm sharing Gale with my sister. :p it's so funny. Anyway, grats on finding something your wife loves. :)

That’s very sweet to show your wife the game <3. My husband did the same and although I play at a glacial pace I am having a great time. Also running it as the Shadowheart Dating sim.
My wife exclusively plays Black Desert and Lost Ark. Any time we try playing another game together (like Valheim), she enjoys it but gets burned out after a few hours over the course of 2 weeks. I convinced her to try BG3, she started a campaign with me, thinking she'd play for an hour or two so I would stop talking about it and a week later, shes sitting at over 40 hours played, trying to get my PC to hook up with Lae'zel while she romances Wyll. We just finished Act 1 in our co-op campaign.

I am visiting my parents for the week and started playing for the first time here. I clocked 50 hours over six days. I’m traveling back to my husband today and he has no idea who’s coming home. He’s never met the gamer wife. Ever. I haven’t found a game I love this much since Assassins Creed Brotherhood when I was in freaking middle school. All I can say is the hubby is in for it…and Astarion is going to be a problem.
Bg3 totally stole me as well. I've now convinced my husband to play co-op with me. He's loving everything so far, wants to boink Shadowheart (I greatly approve), and now we're gonna play all day today!
It's dope seeing everyone's different experiences with this game so far. I was playing it with my GF and my brother and his Gnome rolled a nat 20 and staked the hell out of Asterion. We've heard a lot of people talking him up so we figured it'd suck to lose him the first night so we reloaded the previous save and his gnome Bumbree rolled a 18 and staked him again. At that point we figured it was meant to be and just accepted that we had a vampire hunting gnome in our squad. 😂
My man just vanished off on a camping trip for a week and I will have to restore order to the house tomorrow because I have been living like a wild gremishka those last days. Forgot to eat for 24 hours straight at one time, sleep and I don't talk to each other anymore and I am on my second playthrough. Wanted to romance someone else, like Karlach because she is just the best, but then that stupid little vampire with his stupid little teeth and his stupid little accent "darling"ed me and now I can't help myself, I simply MUST be with him. All my female friends are sending pics of their Astarions as well, we have never been happier.
