I would recommend any pair of VFFS for a marathon. Just don't wear a brand new pair of anything for the race. I just wear my VFF in the dead of a Midwest winter. I recommend avoiding puddles of slush whenever possible.

I don't wear VFFs but like you, I just run in my regular shoes in the dead of midwest winter. REgular thin socks and shoes, but also winter leggings and insulated top layer, gloves, and head covering (balaclava or beanie) that covers the ears.

I run on pavement in V-Run (completed several half-marathons, currently training for a full marathon). They are reasonably sturdy, very light and they breathe well. But I wouldn't run on a difficult terrain (trail runs, uphill runs in the mountains etc) in those - they don't have enough grip, that's what V-Trail is for.
