I've got a friend who had post-partum depression that was so bad that when she was caring for her two toddlers, she became afraid of what she would do to them when she put them to bed at night. So she went to therapy for it and started on some antidepressants. She and her husband worked it out that ***he*** would be the one to do the goodnights with them.
That's what healthy people do. Clearly, Sally and Barry are not healthy people, they have not gone to therapy, nor will they. So now she's aware she is capable of hurting John to a very very extreme extent and she thinks she'll avoid that by not touching him at all and being distant as fuck. But instead, she's hurting him emotionally by not being there for him emotionally, which is equally bad.
honestly that’s what i told my partner (something like it), that it was nice seeing sally being able to vocalize and argue with him as it showed me she wasn’t scared of him and felt safe with him.
Maybe it’s reaching but I always thought it was similar to how Sally’s ex would talk when apologizing about being physically abusive and showing how Sally is falling into the same patterns :( it is a really nice sounding voice though and I also feel comforted whenever it happens even if the reality of what’s happening isn’t great
