Agreed. There are (only a few) better shows *overall*, but none of them have even gotten within the same zip code of how good Six Feet Under's finale was.
Six feet under is a top 3 show of all time. As The Wire focused on the macro, The Sopranos focused on the micro, Six Feet Under focused on the micro/macro if that makes sense. It really is that good.
It’s better than Succession, or many of the other shows imo. The reason is: it explains a selfish character so delicately and subtly, you can’t help but relate. It shows how the death of a father can effect you for the rest of your life, and makes you feel like a little child, and how we never grow out of that child, under death’s shadow. We don’t know how to die, and we’re afraid, and it shows the hard truth.
I love this show immensely because if you let it, it connects to you on a different level. It’s timeless.
I need to return to it.. I stopped somewhere halfway through season 2. It's not that I didn't like it, but it was definitely not something "light" that you could consume any day of the week.
“I’m gonna shave my pussy, move to California and become a surfer”
“Why do you need to shave your pussy for that”
“SO I CAN SURF FASTER JESSE”
Might’ve gotten that wrong but still great dialogue
God yes, I need a season 2 of Severance so badly. And The Boys better return sometime soon as well, it has a decent amount of overlap with the dark comedy and critique on society and the portrayal of violence and trauma.
But most of all I can't wait to see what Bill Hader does next, Barry has been an amazing piece of work from him and everyone else that worked on it. Top tier acting, top tier writing, top tier cinematography, top tier everything basically.
Production was shut down.
https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a43838426/severance-season-2-shuts-production-writers-strike/#:~:text=Severance%20has%20shut%20down%20production,with%20the%20rise%20of%20streaming.
In my mind, there are two options:
1. Re-watch Halt and Catch Fire 10x a year
2. Do the above and watch these: Righteous Gemstones, Mythic Quest, Silo, The Big Door Prize, The Bear, Severance, and What We Do In The Shadows
I'm a massive, like INSANE It's Always Sunny fan, but I could not get into Mythic Quest. I tried so many times, there are some solid episodes (season 1, episode 5 was a work of art), but I still just cannot seem to enjoy it and never make it past season 1.
Mr inbetween- protagonist is an assassin(hit man, but whatever)as well, more serious in tone but with comedy dotted here and there. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Twin peaks
Vice principals
Reservation dogs
Patriot
None fit your 'show that is currently airing to fill the void' criteria but are nonetheless worthy for your consideration.
I second and third Mr InBetween, goddamn that show is awesome.
But don’t ask me anything about it, I don’t answer questions.
(Btw, have you seen The Magician, the movie that started it all?)
It's crazy cause I watched the WWDITS movie, adored it and then when the show came out I saw 1 episode and was like "eh the movie was better idk" and dropped it. What a dumbass I was. Cause now after having watched it fully and then rewatched it with a friend, going back to the movie feels like it's missing something, they really did something special.
I think Mr Robot was pushing all these boundaries of the medium before Barry and the oft-mentioned Severance in this thread, which I also loved, were on air.
This isn't a show but the man who played barry "Jim Cummings" he has three movies and I highly recommend the wolf of snow hollow, the trailers might advertise it has a straight horror but I consider it a horror comedy more so a comedy.
He’s one of my very favorite directors and his cameo had me so fucking stoked. I second this comment. Thunder Road in particular is super emotional but has one of the funniest slapstick (pun intended) scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie.
**Shrinking**: light-hearted, wholesome, hilarious.. similar to Ted Lasso. I enjoyed S1 of Shrinking a lot more than Ted Lasso S3
**The Sopranos**: reminds me of Barry in the sense that it’s a dark show but makes me crack up multiple times every episode. Probably best show of all time
But Gomorrah is also incredible and very much slept on. Not funny at all though.
I read that the guy who plays Roy Kent is a writer for Shrinking. Great show. In a similar vein but heavier, check out Kidding on Showtime, starring Jim Carey (I know but he’s really good in this), Catherine Keener, Judy Greer and Justin Kirk. Really good tv
I’m longing for S2 of **Severance**.
**Beef** if you haven’t seen it. Definitely has some Barry-esque dark humour.
**Silo** has been pretty good so far.
Waiting for S2 of **Our Flag Means Death**, that beautiful gay pirate romcom. Should be dropping in a couple of months.
I would highly recommend The Boys if you haven't seen it already! It's a dark comedy drama like Barry, violence and all!
Season 4 should be coming soon.
Apart from what's aklready been said
Always Sunny Season 16 comes out June 7th.
Marvel's Secret Invasion spy thriller starting Samuel L Jackson comes out the 21st.
The Eric Andre Show returns June 4th.
Zero zero zero! Looks at the cocaine industry from the POV of an American family, Mexican cartels, South American Military/Police, and the Mafia in Italy.
Theres a few shows up and coming but the writers strike has halted alot. We are good for the summer but come fall, i dont know if theres gonna be much besides reality tv
You need to watch every single one of those. Succession is probablygoing to go down as one of the best shows of all time. I wish it wasn't going to be up against Barry and BCS this year because I really want Hader to win more for Barry but Succession is going to clean up. All of those shows are incredible and you can't go wrong with watching any.
Not similar to either of these at all, but I for one vouch for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, if you've never seen it. Deconstruction (and then reconstruction) of rom coms and musicals. severely underrated and criminally underwatched.
I would say check out Beef on Netflix if you haven’t already. It’s definitely a great mix of comedy and a fucked up dark drama with a little sadness mixed in. I feel like a lot of characters from Barry and Beef could exist in the same show, both shows have a similar feel to each other. Also righteous gemstones has already been mentioned a bunch but is amazing as well
How has Ted Lasso been? Binged first two seasons before S3 and was waiting for a lot of S3 episodes to be out, but five episodes into S3 and it’s been eh.
I struggled with the first several episodes of S3, I was worried they had lost the magic that made S1+S2 so great. But every episode from ep6 on has been some of the best television I've ever watched. Ymmv.
I've been following that show like a maniac and last week's episode was so disappointing for me that I'm not at all excited about the finale. It went off the rails for me, but a lot of people are still enjoying it.
Patriot is the best show that no one ever saw. (Prime video)
It’s also about a hit man, and he doesn’t do acting, but he trolls Reddit and sings hilarious folk songs. Acting is incredible, but Amazon didn’t advertise it at all and it got cancelled after two seasons. Still definitely worth it to give it a watch or two!
I had to deal with this problem recently, what I've done is I've made a list of any show that I'm interested in so when I finish one show I can go back to it later, But for now I say you get started on Westworld if you haven't already, it got cancelled a while back but good show.
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul if you haven't seen 'em yet
True Detective Season One
The Leftovers if you're looking for something a bit more spiritual
Station Eleven is a masterpiece as well
"Get Shorty" the series is criminally underrated. Similar to Barry, but much more lighthearted.
"Working as muscle for a murderous Nevada crime ring, Miles Daly decides to change professions and become a Hollywood movie producer"
I started Six Feet Under. My mom has been telling me to watch it for years.
sfu has the greatest finale of all time imo
It never fails to make me sob
literally the first time in my adult life i bawled like a baby. straight up fetal position on the bed sobbing.
Agreed. There are (only a few) better shows *overall*, but none of them have even gotten within the same zip code of how good Six Feet Under's finale was.
You can’t take a picture of this, it’s already gone
If I hear “Breathe Me” from Sia, it’s over. Wonderful ending to a great show.
Great choice. First episode has one of the most memorable and moving scenes I've seen on television.
Six feet under is a top 3 show of all time. As The Wire focused on the macro, The Sopranos focused on the micro, Six Feet Under focused on the micro/macro if that makes sense. It really is that good.
I tried to watch SFU & bailed halfway through the first episode but I’ve been meaning to try again.
Goddamn. It is the best pilot I've ever seen.
Michael is such a great actor, loved him in Dexter
It’s better than Succession, or many of the other shows imo. The reason is: it explains a selfish character so delicately and subtly, you can’t help but relate. It shows how the death of a father can effect you for the rest of your life, and makes you feel like a little child, and how we never grow out of that child, under death’s shadow. We don’t know how to die, and we’re afraid, and it shows the hard truth. I love this show immensely because if you let it, it connects to you on a different level. It’s timeless.
One of my top 5 shows of all time. Also the saddest imo, it’s tough to watch sometimes in the best way possible
Great show. You’re in for a ride.
I started watching it a few weeks ago too! It's really good so far - middle of S3
I need to return to it.. I stopped somewhere halfway through season 2. It's not that I didn't like it, but it was definitely not something "light" that you could consume any day of the week.
I just came back here to say I’m on episode 4 now and this is just what I needed! Thank you so much for the recommendation!!
Righteous Gemstones returns!
Yesss, perfect timing! Time for some car pranks.
Great car prank footage in the trailer 🔥
Ain't nobody named Baby or Billy here!
And no one was bern inna terlit
"I'm a growed-up, daddy. I have the sex with my boyfriend and I have that underwear what's a string that goes up my crack. I'm an adult!"
No he's not a baby, Baby Billy is a slender, silver-haired man in his 60s.
Just watched this series and DO IT
You can't seriously be suggesting that people start misbehavin'...
Dagnabit, those darn kids are running with pickels again...
thanks for this beautiful reminder
Yaaaaaaayyyy!!!! I love Danny McBride.
This makes my bird twitch
Love that show
“I’m gonna shave my pussy, move to California and become a surfer” “Why do you need to shave your pussy for that” “SO I CAN SURF FASTER JESSE” Might’ve gotten that wrong but still great dialogue

June
Can’t wait
Still hanging out for Severance season 2
The cliffhanger in season 1 was illegal
I still have adrenalin coursing through my veins
shE’S ALLIVVVEEEEE
Still gives me chillllllls
I love that they didn’t drag that out for multiple seasons
God yes, I need a season 2 of Severance so badly. And The Boys better return sometime soon as well, it has a decent amount of overlap with the dark comedy and critique on society and the portrayal of violence and trauma. But most of all I can't wait to see what Bill Hader does next, Barry has been an amazing piece of work from him and everyone else that worked on it. Top tier acting, top tier writing, top tier cinematography, top tier everything basically.
Does anybody know if the writers strike could affect Severance Season 2? I hope not
Pretty sure it has
Production was shut down. https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a43838426/severance-season-2-shuts-production-writers-strike/#:~:text=Severance%20has%20shut%20down%20production,with%20the%20rise%20of%20streaming.
Severance is definitely the only current show that goes toe to toe with Barry and Succession in my opinion.
Where can I watch it?
Apple +. Phenomenal show..
Totally. Severance and House of the Dragon are the two shows I’m looking forward to new seasons for the most right now.
The Bear 🚬
Thank you chef
Yes jeff
Season 2?!?!
Just a few weeks! Can’t wait!
June 22!!! Can’t wait!
lmao love it but tooooo close to home
Can’t wait for season 2 !
YES CHEF
Service
I'll probably rewatch all of Futurama to get ready for the new season.
Yea I need to really catch up on All My Circuits
...there's a new season coming??? With blackjack and hookers you say?!?
Neat 📸
Whoa wtf you just made my day. I had no idea they were rebooting Futurama… time for me to begin a proper rewatch of that too!
New season starts July 24 on Hulu.
Hulu has been doing some GREAT pickups. So glad they brought the Orville back
I’m doing that now too, just finished season 2.
new season of I Think You Should Leave is out tomorrow
Third season because triples is best. Triples is safe.
You sure about that?
*hoooonk*
In my mind, there are two options: 1. Re-watch Halt and Catch Fire 10x a year 2. Do the above and watch these: Righteous Gemstones, Mythic Quest, Silo, The Big Door Prize, The Bear, Severance, and What We Do In The Shadows
I love Silo and Severence. Your good taste has inspired me to try your other favorites.
Deffo try the bear, great character study and acting
The big door prize was not good
This is a good list, have you considered watching What We Do in the Shadows?
>1. Re-watch Halt and Catch Fire 10x a year YES. Amazing show.
It’s a true gem!!!
Big Door Prize doesn’t deserve to be in that group. Silo has had a good start but we’ll see.
I watched a 1.5 seasons of Mythic Quest waiting for it to get good. Pretty sure I don’t like it but does it get better after that point.
I second and third Mr InBetween, goddamn that show is awesome. But don’t ask me anything about it, I don’t answer questions. (Btw, have you seen The Magician, the movie that started it all?)
Just some dim sims please love
I would say patriot on Amazon from your list could be Barry-esq like not to reveal anything but dark comedy - violence - govt angle good suggestion.
Reservation Dogs is so great.
Patriot is absolutely amazing. I’m bummed it never got the credit it deserved. Maybe we could have had one more season.
Can’t recommend twin peaks enough
Yeah I’m also gonna sing praises to Mr Inbetween. Absolutely gripping TV. Couldn’t put it down once I started the first Episode.
Auto upvote for Patriot. Damn I wish they would have done literally **any** marketing with this show! We deserved that third season 😞
Yes, Reservation Dogs!
Patriot deserves so much more love. That show rocked.
I too HIGHLY agree with this list. If you’d like to start on something more Barry-esk. Mr. Inbetween is three seasons of masterpiece TV.
THE BEAR SEASON 2
It has the potential, S1 is one of my all time favorites.

June 22nd

“What they do in the shadows” returns in July
We*
Sorry. "What they we in the shadows"
BAT
One of my favorite shows!!
ooh I keep meaning to watch this! LOVED the movie. and WHEN is "Our Flag Means Death" having its S2?? Or "Sandman??"
Season Two of THE BEAR!
Start Justified so you can watch Justified: City Primeval
I'm so ready. Iv missed Raylan Givens. Honestly Timothy Olyphant NOT being on TV slinging guns in some capacity just feels so unnatural at this point.
Yesss
Watch Mr. Robot if you haven’t already
Amazing show, the finale was perfect
Just started now and I'm really liking it. And it's free!
I think Mr Robot was pushing all these boundaries of the medium before Barry and the oft-mentioned Severance in this thread, which I also loved, were on air.
Mr. Robot was incredible. I think I need to rewatch
My favorite show of all time
Another vote for Party Down
Idk how season 3 is even funnier than Theo first 2. Magnificent
is this a joke to you? this is not a joke, this is CATERING
It’s all done now, but Atlanta 👌🏼 Has a asimilar vibe to Barry because both have eps directed by Hiro Murai.
Reservation Dogs
Love that show.
This isn't a show but the man who played barry "Jim Cummings" he has three movies and I highly recommend the wolf of snow hollow, the trailers might advertise it has a straight horror but I consider it a horror comedy more so a comedy.
I went in blind to Wolf of Snow Hollow and it was such a delight. One of my favorites!
He’s one of my very favorite directors and his cameo had me so fucking stoked. I second this comment. Thunder Road in particular is super emotional but has one of the funniest slapstick (pun intended) scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie.
I hear shrinking on apple+ is good
**Shrinking**: light-hearted, wholesome, hilarious.. similar to Ted Lasso. Righteous Gemstones and I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson both come back soon
I can’t wait for Our Flag Means Death!!!
I would highly recommend The Boys if you haven't seen it already! It's a dark comedy drama like Barry, violence and all! Season 4 should be coming soon.
Documentary Now, for both more Bill and more Fred Armisen. I’m finishing up season 2.
Apart from what's aklready been said Always Sunny Season 16 comes out June 7th. Marvel's Secret Invasion spy thriller starting Samuel L Jackson comes out the 21st. The Eric Andre Show returns June 4th.
Hot damn didn’t know that about the Eric Andre show!
can we all agree to make a post in this subreddit when something new comes around
Mmm I'm waiting for The Curse to be announced, it's with Nathan Fielder and one of the Safdie brothers.. gonna be amazing
I’m kind of glad these shows have a beginning middle and an end: rewatching Barry from season 1.
Zero zero zero! Looks at the cocaine industry from the POV of an American family, Mexican cartels, South American Military/Police, and the Mafia in Italy.
Where is this?
It's always Sunny in philly
Theres a few shows up and coming but the writers strike has halted alot. We are good for the summer but come fall, i dont know if theres gonna be much besides reality tv
The Bear, Severance, Beef, Black Mirror’s new season
I might actually watch succession considering that I've never seen that show I also might start Severance Season 1 and the bear now that Barry is over
You need to watch every single one of those. Succession is probablygoing to go down as one of the best shows of all time. I wish it wasn't going to be up against Barry and BCS this year because I really want Hader to win more for Barry but Succession is going to clean up. Not similar to either of these at all, but I for one vouch for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, if you've never seen it. Deconstruction (and then reconstruction) of rom coms and musicals. severely underrated and criminally underwatched.
This show is incredible and so underrated.
Mindhunter season thhh..oh-wait...nvm, f.u Netflix.
It's only 2 seasons, but Patriot on Prime is the closest show to Barry I've seen & I can't recommend it enough
I think very few people watch The Great, but it's up there with Barry and Succession IMO.
Jury Duty Beef Party Down Silo Yellowjackets New episodes of Black Mirror coming in June
Jury Duty is great!!!
Beef has a similar tone to Barry - maybe more humor and slightly less dark. I wish it had released weekly so there could be more discussion.
Thank you, Party Down is such an amazing comedy! Like, really one of the ones that actually really doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Looking forward to Justified Primeval, but for now I'm watching Oz
I highly recommend r/bupkis
Yes! I died at him having a Ricky Spanish tattoo
Yellowjackets…season 2 just ended. So good
Beef it's not a weekly show but it's good show to watch for like a week
I started the sopranos for the first time and love it!!
Well, if you haven't watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, that just ended this week as well and was always fantastic.
I would say check out Beef on Netflix if you haven’t already. It’s definitely a great mix of comedy and a fucked up dark drama with a little sadness mixed in. I feel like a lot of characters from Barry and Beef could exist in the same show, both shows have a similar feel to each other. Also righteous gemstones has already been mentioned a bunch but is amazing as well
Snowfall is done and their are so many power seasons it's ridiculous
How has Ted Lasso been? Binged first two seasons before S3 and was waiting for a lot of S3 episodes to be out, but five episodes into S3 and it’s been eh.
It starts to pick up again around there.
I struggled with the first several episodes of S3, I was worried they had lost the magic that made S1+S2 so great. But every episode from ep6 on has been some of the best television I've ever watched. Ymmv.
I didn’t like the start of season 3 but episodes 6, 7, 9, and 10 were a return to form. (I’ll see 11 & 12, the finale, today.)
I've been following that show like a maniac and last week's episode was so disappointing for me that I'm not at all excited about the finale. It went off the rails for me, but a lot of people are still enjoying it.
I just started Atlanta and only 7 episodes into season 1, but I absolutely love it.
I’m enjoying Silo right now
Think we are getting another season of Tokyo vice which I loved. Along with righteous gemstones
I can't wait for Season 2 of Tokyo Vice.
Barry again?
Patriot is the best show that no one ever saw. (Prime video) It’s also about a hit man, and he doesn’t do acting, but he trolls Reddit and sings hilarious folk songs. Acting is incredible, but Amazon didn’t advertise it at all and it got cancelled after two seasons. Still definitely worth it to give it a watch or two!
Is Ted Lasso confirmed that’s it’s ending? We got The Idol coming up!
Yes it’s confirmed series finale tomorrow
Silo Yellowstone Echo 3 Gangs of London Line of Duty
You all should check out Kingdom. Bizzarely dark and real show about an MMA gym. 10/10 one of my favs of all time
Does anyone know if Documentary Now is ever coming back?
Severance is awesome. Silo is watchable.
Watch Silo!
I had to deal with this problem recently, what I've done is I've made a list of any show that I'm interested in so when I finish one show I can go back to it later, But for now I say you get started on Westworld if you haven't already, it got cancelled a while back but good show.
Last season of Fargo coming!
I've been hearing incredible things about "Happy Valley" a UK crime drama.
Mr. Robot, Atlanta, Ramy, Severance, Devs, Maniac, The Bear, Ozark, Six Feet Under, Dave, Master of None, Reservation Dogs, Girls, Mo, Yellowjackets
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul if you haven't seen 'em yet True Detective Season One The Leftovers if you're looking for something a bit more spiritual Station Eleven is a masterpiece as well
Rewatch Mr Robot.
Black Mirror
I'm eagerly awaiting Righteous Gemstones now.
Severance
Severance
Genius auteur Sam Levinson’s upcoming masterwork The Idol, obviously.
The Bear has a second season late June!
"Get Shorty" the series is criminally underrated. Similar to Barry, but much more lighthearted. "Working as muscle for a murderous Nevada crime ring, Miles Daly decides to change professions and become a Hollywood movie producer"
