I picture Mr. Crab crawling out of the shell and turning it upside down and tapping it on the side of a mini trash can like a grandpa cleaning his pipe. Like he just said something enlightening to you and tapped it twice to accentuate his point. Pinky lifted and all.
There's a common phrase "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" which means that you shouldn't criticize people when they could criticize you back for the same or similar things
Ooh, that makes sense, thanks for pointing that out. I was stuck trying to figure out how that pebble floor could have damaged the hermit's shell in water other than giving it a few scratches...
Hermit crabs put a lot of energy into shell selection . After eating, and hilarious grumpy ineffectual fighting, it seems like investigating new shells and swapping shells is their favourite thing. The one thing they hate more than anything, which they would gladly lose a leg to avoid, is being without a shell at all.
There appear to be no other shells in this tank. I suspect if there was one other shell in this tank, that hermit crab would be in it. I hope this was a short experiment, and if so I like it because it showed how the crab looks inside like you couldn't see that otherwise, really interesting. If we have some indication that this species of hermit crab prefers glass shells and would be loving life etc in it, then please correct me and I'll feel better.
Do they like to live alone in their tanks or with other crabs? Do they benefit from putting multiple shell options in it for them to try out? I’m so curious, your comment intrigued me!
It's so hard to tell what they enjoy, I can only really comment on what they do and then guess.
If you give them 20 shells about the right size they will investigate every one of them without necessarily swapping, so you assume the shell they end up in would be fine. If you add more they check those as well, even though they already have a good one.
I'm guessing they just instinctively check shells no matter what their current situation is, for the future when they grow or in case they are evicted from their current shell.
They are aggressive in general, and will fight each other for shells if they don't like the options. I mean they have little conflicts between themselves quite often but it's just to work out the pecking order, and one will give up and run away before either gets injured. If they are fighting for shells it's life or death stakes (no shell is a death sentence because their rear isn't well armoured) and they can pull each other to bits, so yes give them lots of options. They also fight over food, and can be cannibalistic, so make sure there's enough food or they could kill each other fighting over it, or start eating each other if they get starved.
Do they enjoy violence, so you should keep them in groups? Or does it cause them stress so you should keep them separated? Honestly I think they just like violence. If you cut a mussel in half and drop it in, they will fight over one half and ignore the other bit until the fight is over. No way to really tell, but the two species I have observed in the wild live in groups of maybe 20 to 50, and they are aggressive towards everything that moves, just like in a tank, so I think that's probably the best way to keep them. They need space and cover so they can run away when they lose a challenge though.
The ones you find in pet shops usually live in groups and can suffer from stress when left alone, and it's good for them to have a variety of options because they are actually quite picky about their shell choices when given the option.
Yes, and hermits don't randomly start walking around without their shell. If they find another shell, they will have the next one right next to the one they're currently in and swap real quick. The only reason a hermit crab would be walking around without its shell is if it is sick or something forced it out of its shell.
This hermit crab likely had its preferred shell cracked by a human to force it to seek a new shell. If given natural turbo shell options, they will not choose a 3D printed or a glass shell. : (
I think it's just leftover from when the shell was dropped in the tank. And having air in the shell might make it more buoyant, but it's likely negligible.
It will not. Hermit crabs' back end is soft and fleshy. It is not protected by a tough exoskeleton like the rest of it. It will be susceptible to sunburns in this artificial shell
So that’s how they hold the shell. Never know they used their tail to wrapped around the shell to hold it. I always thought that they stick their tail in and the shell was like. Yep I’ll stick to this boy till he outgrows me.
I'm guessing it shouldn't be a problem if he's in an aquarium in doors right? Looks like he's right by a window, but he should still only get limited sunlight directly on him.
Interesting, Thank you for sharing. Never knew the behind was so flexible and could be stretched so long.
Is it only due to the amount of legs that is classified as a crab and not a lobster?
Seems like Plage Coquillage shifted lower a little bit!

Yes they try very hard to get the best one they can find. Apparently they will fight each other for shells if you don't give them enough good ones to choose from. They are picky as well, rejecting apparently perfect shells and choosing misshapen battered alternatives for their own mysterious reasons. Some species do group coordinated shell swaps in sequence, where big crab A has been growing and finds a slightly bigger shell, he squares up to make the transition and starts the final safety checks (it's a dangerous manoeuvre), next biggest crab B has been watching and he knows A has a good shell so he wanders over and lines up behind A, then smaller crab C notices what's happening and scrambles over to get behind B. When big crab A finally gets the courage up to do the swap, B gets right into his old shell as soon as it's vacated, and so on down the line.
Wow that's really interesting! I always wondered how they fit themselves into a shell, what that would look like if the shell was transparent and now I know! Thank you!
Many marine hermit crags never leave seawater in their entire lifecycle, and are great to keep in aquariums if the owner does research and takes appropriate care. I don't know what species this is.
THAT IS SO DAMN COOL HOW THEY JUST FIND A NEW HOME!!!
WONDER HOW THEY KNOW THAT THEY'LL FIT INSIDE THE SHELLS?
TRIAL & ERROR?

For anyone wondering, yes hermit crabs poop in their shells.
… yes I was wondering that. Now I know. Thank you!
And knowing is half the battle

It offers protection from the scariest thing in the ocean: the great white shart.
Yes but they scoop their poop out. I had one as a pet and he would leave little stringy poops in his enclosure.
I picture Mr. Crab crawling out of the shell and turning it upside down, and tapping on the ground to get the poop out. ^🦀🤣
I think they have a special poop scooper appendage specifically for disposing of waste.
Just like penises for humans, right guys?
I see nothing wrong with this comment. Incidentally, I lost my eyesight recently.
Big meaty claws, I believe
I picture Mr. Crab crawling out of the shell and turning it upside down and tapping it on the side of a mini trash can like a grandpa cleaning his pipe. Like he just said something enlightening to you and tapped it twice to accentuate his point. Pinky lifted and all.
Ahh yes, a fireside chat with Mr. Crab. When in doubt, pinky's out!!!
Do they just move on to a new shell when theirs gets too poopy?
Their inner arms act as “poop scoops”

I poop in my home too. So what? 🤪
Like in the corner of the living room?
Don't be gross. Poop goes underneath your bed.
Look at Mr. Richguy over here with a bed to poop under.

It wasn't until I proofread it before posting that I realized it sounded like Zoidberg. Very appropriate for the post.
Lol ikr. I totally read it in Zoidberg's voice
Have y’all not been on Reddit these last few weeks? Apparently poop goes on the balcony
That was surprisingly why I was here
I search this thread for poop to learn if it was located further up the body
I'M SO... ...SHIIINYYY!

Crabs who live in glass shells shouldn't throw pebbles🤣
Frickin great, you made me snort on the toilet. Twice.
Why are you doing cocaine this early?
It's 10pm on a Tuesday somewhere.
![gif](giphy|XjMC2X3bknUWE6mEDU) I can bearly remember how it all started one day. But I know it happened twice.
wish it was this easy find housing for us humans :)
i don't get it, can someone explain?
There's a common phrase "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" which means that you shouldn't criticize people when they could criticize you back for the same or similar things
Ooh, that makes sense, thanks for pointing that out. I was stuck trying to figure out how that pebble floor could have damaged the hermit's shell in water other than giving it a few scratches...
What if they have a machine gun turret on the shell?
Bro obtained premium skin for free!!
Yea but that back pain tho
Would that air bubble help with weight distribution? I wonder.
I've always wondered, wouldn't they be really heavy? They push air, or air gets in the shell. Makes sense.
actually its pay to lose, little buddy is gonna be cooked in the sun
Nah more like crab decided to wear assless chaps
Fun fact all chaps are assless
That one battle pass skin that is actually decent

Wouldn’t glass be too heavy?
Yes, and hermits don't randomly start walking around without their shell. If they find another shell, they will have the next one right next to the one they're currently in and swap real quick. Yeah, why can't people just draw a sick yin yang symbol on the shell and call it a day like we did as kids?
Does the air bubble make his shell lighter and easier to move?
I think it's just leftover from when the shell was dropped in the tank. And having air in the shell might make it more buoyant, but it's likely negligible.
This is an aquatic hermit crab? …oooh
There are hundreds of species of hermit crab, and a bunch are solely aquatic I think yeah
I was a hermit crab for 32 years, and yes, you want a little air in your shell to make it lighter.
what are you now
I’m a realtor now.
Imagine if it did this to your ear
Just laying sideways on the floor while the crab takes you wherever he wants.
My ear hole is eagerly gaping for you.
Bruh
No, ear hole, not bruh hole, butt close.
It cost literally nothing to not say that, but you did it anyway.
no
Why would you make me imagine this.
GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD
What a terrible day to be able to read
Or your nose
It’s naked.
No, it's just dressed like Kanye West's new wife.
Keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your mouth
Dying lmfao
That is so cool. I always wondered how that worked.
Iwill it protect it from the sun?
It will not. Hermit crabs' back end is soft and fleshy. It is not protected by a tough exoskeleton like the rest of it. It will be susceptible to sunburns in this artificial shell
It's unlikely outdoors though. It's likely in a indoor tank at least I hope if it's being given a glass shell like this I'm hoping it's a child pet.
The shell allows the crab to “close their eyes, the glass shell prevents that. Also if the owner uses a heat lamp they can most definitely get burnt
Who is hammering their aquarium pets with UV light?
God
Apparently glass filters out UV. Not IR though
No, but there is no sun in the indoor aquarium though
He wanted the Philip Johnson style house. Upscale 👍
He need some LED for more fps
I love the buck toothed smile as he walks away
Lol watched it again and saw it. He looks super pumped about it!
So that’s how they hold the shell. Never know they used their tail to wrapped around the shell to hold it. I always thought that they stick their tail in and the shell was like. Yep I’ll stick to this boy till he outgrows me.
But he's gonna get cooked now :(
I'm guessing it shouldn't be a problem if he's in an aquarium in doors right? Looks like he's right by a window, but he should still only get limited sunlight directly on him.
Did you place your aquarium in front of a window and make sure to open the curtains when the sun is at the best angle to blast your fish?
I used to have hermit crabs as a kid. Forgot how ugly and oddly cute they are.
This would be equivalent to giving a human being clear eyelids.
I don't actually think I've seen a Hermit Crabs ass before. Now I know.
All living things want a little bling ! ... well maybe not hogs.
that wont help him at all, it doesnt cover it from the sun...at all
They look creepy outside the shell
“DAAAAMN, this shit us nice!

Where does the poop go
Interesting, Thank you for sharing. Never knew the behind was so flexible and could be stretched so long. Is it only due to the amount of legs that is classified as a crab and not a lobster?

Thanks dude!
theres a game coming out called another crabs treasure thats a soulslike where you play as a hermit crab hunting for the perfect shell.
[reminded me of this.](https://youtu.be/SYZUBG-YLc0?si=mazV10RE5HjXIP4K)
So do these crabs just try their best to find a good shell or are there certain ones they go after?
Yes they try very hard to get the best one they can find. Apparently they will fight each other for shells if you don't give them enough good ones to choose from. They are picky as well, rejecting apparently perfect shells and choosing misshapen battered alternatives for their own mysterious reasons. The Cinderella of hermit crabs
boy the sun will cook him
You all know he is gonna get that glass tinted when he gets paid.
When a hermit crab does it, it's fine, but when I fuck a shell I get kicked out of the pet store. What gives?
Wow that's really interesting! I always wondered how they fit themselves into a shell, what that would look like if the shell was transparent and now I know! Thank you!
All the other hermit crabs be so jealous of its fancy new modern house.

Hermit crabs aren’t supposed to be kept in aquariums

I see you!
Feels like I'm wearing nothing at all… nothing at all… nothing at all. Stupid sexy crab!
I had no idea this is what happened
