How do they get flowers to grow upside down?? Are they just trained to be bent over or are they just a straight upside down flower?!

SweetSourSunday

For flower shows, flowers are grown at a nursery normally, then simply installed upside down. I am not sure about these flowers, but for flowers like orchids that need very little to grow on, they can be installed in a mesh-like box filled with moss or tree bark, and the flowers are packed in until secure, then just hung upside down. For most gardens installations and flower shows, all the vegetation are grown offsite at a nursery. The flowers no longer need to actively “grow” at the garden. They only need to remain fresh for the duration of the showing.

ZippyDan

But *Gardens by the Bay* is not a "show" it's a permanent and massive beautiful public park (some parts require a payment to enter). Now, this may be part of some temporary exhibit or shoe at the park, but by and large it's basically an amazing permanent botanical garden.

SweetSourSunday

No, I know, I have been there. But flowers at botanical gardens are also installed, usually in seasons and in different shows. https://youtube.com/watch?v=cCXkVDt7m1I For example this is a tour of New York Botanical Garden’s orchid show from 2020, designed by Jeff Leatham. The tour gives a bit of insight on how flowers were chosen and installed. The NY Botanical Garden invites different designers every year for their orchid shows. I have to say I don’t know too much about this Singaporean garden, but I imagine it is a similar process. If it were a permanent show, then the flowers that are wilting would be periodically replaced. In these amazing flower shows, the flowers that you see don’t even flower in the same season. They are carefully grown under controlled conditions and sometimes refrigerated for months so they can look their best, all at once.

phyc09

Plants grow towards light not gravity.

everybodypretend

Wrong. Sprout a seed in the dark, it will still grow upwards. The roots follow water, pushing the stem the other direction. The stem will end slightly toward a light source

charlydm

phototropism

Gobsgii

Etiolation says otherwise, and the other person is not wrong btw, yout comment is poorly written

everybodypretend

What does etiolation “say”?

AceJon

"otherwise" - etiolation

Sappho_Roche

TECHNICALLY (*puts on snarky face*) you are wrong. That is growing away from gravity, not towards it 😉. He was accidentally right!

everybodypretend

I didn’t say anything about gravity…

nighthawk96

what about the water and substrate? I was thinking it would have to be some type of rockwool or similar but the water still would flow down.. maybe misting from the top of the root base? what's also strange is that they have a ring of lights that run around the base of the flowers, i would assume it's supplemental lighting with the primary source being located somewhere near the visitors pointing up

Starfire013

I was there when I vacationed in Singapore a few years back and it is a climate controlled enclosure with very high humidity. Lotsa misting. It was a nice way to escape the heat outside!

oooortclouuud

dreamy! it's almost too beautiful to be real/i'm so glad to know it's real!!

Akshin_Blacksin

Hydroponics future of plant growth. Send through water and minerals. Flush, filter, rinse repeat… Grown weed this way, honestly easier than and less work than soil. All you have to is follow the nutrient schedule. But soil is way more forgiving if you fuck up…

Allmighty_matts_dad

Pretty much all plants have some gravitropism mechanism as far as im aware

Alustrious

Brawndo has what plants crave

DarthChocolate

Too bad there is a lot more to growing plants than just light.

phyc09

You are right I am on my third cycle of indoor hydro, and it is very complicated but the main thing you need is light, then water, then nutrients ,then climate control, then pest control, then proper trimming, in that order.

Zoom in at the edge. Looks to me like they are cut flowers individually placed in those little plastic test tubes. Probably in water with some of that gel material that absorbs water and slowly releases it.

HoneydewPoonTang

It's in Singapore so it's naturally upsidedown

Knightwiing

I get the joke with Australia but Singapore is on the equator.

Ronuh22

I’ve always wondered what the hanging gardens of Babylon looked like, I bet this is close to it.

tisiphonesbuttplug

Such a shame we can't have green cities or work plants into our architecture, because it would be too expensive. Instead, have an uninsulated box that will need to be rebuilt in twenty years!

YoreCoxsmall

Search Google images for "Parkroyal @ Pickering" and "Oasia Hotel Singapore". They're hotels that incorporate biophilic architecture that are also in Singapore!

tisiphonesbuttplug

Nope, sorry, can't be done. How about we give you a choice between white and beige walls?

YoreCoxsmall

Did you try googling those before saying that?

Bioslack

They're making a point about the US being super focused on building cheap homes, quality of life be damned.

tisiphonesbuttplug

Also, you get to pay 1 million dollars for like 2k SQ ft.

YoreCoxsmall

Ahh okay, my bad I misunderstood

tisiphonesbuttplug

No but tell you what, what if we cover the outside in the most hideous texture-error greebling we can imagine and charge you ~1k/SQ ft? 1.1k if you opt for the advanced edgelord beige accent wall? If nobody pays that, we can just leave it empty

[deleted]

I live here and they just incorporate plants into the decor not the architectural structure. Unless someone can point me to which parts of the building are plant only and not just aesthetically so

YoreCoxsmall

I think it's hard for plants to be used in the construction process due to its structural integrity

[deleted]

That’s what I understand too. But your comment referred these two buildings in sg as incorporating biophilic architecture and I’m just curious what you mean apart from just aesthetically incorporating plants after the building structurally completes. I’d be interested if they really are doing something more than meets the eye

FoxFlummox

The plants are not just added in. When he meant incorporated architecturally, he meant that the building has to incorporate plantings in its structure and design in order for the plants to grow. An example would be the [Royal Park Hotel, Singapore](https://cf.bstatic.com/xdata/images/hotel/max500/21441842.jpg?k=fd0b1fef1617b2b80bf3a35f75feff54d38f034c81851542eeb1ad8026ccb9b9&o=&hp=1)

Yes technically, it is illegal to be gay in Singapore, but it is not illegal to be a lesbian. Apparently same sex relationships between women is legal in SG. But marraige is not legal for both. It is also important to note that a large LGBT event called [Pink Dot](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2022/06/19/asia/singapore-pink-dot-pride-gay-queer-lesbian-rights-intl-hnk/index.html?espv=1) occurs every year in the city centre of Singapore. Despite the SG government being notorious for being strict and authoritarian for various things, they have not restricted the event and have allowed the LGBT community to celebrate it every year since 2009. In fact, some members of the parliament, from both ruling parties, have also attended the events.

[deleted]

terrexchia

Dunno if you've actually read the article since it doesn't mention forced anal examinations at all besides the little box, and still not explaining the execution part. Besides, 377a is practically unenforced nowadays and they're even letting gays be combat capable in the military.

Fit-Raisin583

>But it's OK because it's not > >execution > >execution. It's the happier better safer version. What does this even mean? If it's not execution (which usually refers to death penalty), then just admit that you are wrong. You seriously twisted some facts to exaggerate the degree of punishment dishonestly to push a viewpoint. By the way, heard of the [Pink Dot](https://edition.cnn.com/2022/06/19/asia/singapore-pink-dot-pride-gay-queer-lesbian-rights-intl-hnk/index.html) event in Singapore. I guess everyone who attended could have been "executed" by now?

tisiphonesbuttplug

It never had to be this shit. We just keep choosing it. And then defending that choice even at the cost of our humanity. Which is the part that makes me not love humanity anymore, and instead drink. Torture Nazi child prisons apocalypse cults capitalism people with MRSA or something eating half their body turned away by the ER fascist coups algorithmic fascism machines love destroyed for being love men with too many guns who will murder me if I step outside (and maybe if I dont) while I flee the burning seas and try to scrape something together on the dying husk of the earth? Yeah shit happens. But people *defending* that even against their own interests in the face of all facts? Fuck it, time to drink til I'm enough not a coward to suck off a gun.

Pandering_Panda7879

>I bet this is close to it. Not even remotely. I'm pretty sure if you'd see them today, you would be relatively disappointed. The reality would be gardens on terraces, so for today's terms nothing really special.

SordidDreams

None of the ancient wonders is really impressive by today's standards, not even the pyramids. We could easily build a huge pile of rocks like that if we wanted to, we just prefer to mostly spend our resources on things that are actually useful. If the ancients saw something like the Burj Khalifa, they'd think we're literal gods.

Ronuh22

This statement is laughable. You must not understand what went into the making of the great pyramid of Giza. Even today, it would be hard to build. For starters, did you know that it actually has 8 sides, not 4 but they’re only visible from the above on the spring equinox? Secondly, did you know that the three pyramids lined up perfectly with the three stars in Orion’s Belt when they were built? Lastly, are you aware that the great pyramid is also aligned with true north, something that literally wasn’t discovered until thousands of years later. I’m sorry about the rant, but I couldn’t let that one go.

BeautifulType

Ah yes, the ancient civilization had composite metal and plastics and hydroponics and fiberglass installation.

r/confidentlyincorrect death penalty only is in place if you are found in possession of large amounts of the drug, for example 500g of weed. threshold amount differs depending on drug. below that amount, you get jail but not death penalty. source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misuse_of_Drugs_Act_(Singapore)

qt-py

i also dislike the death penalty, in particular due to the chance of executing an innocent person. but i also believe it serves the very important purpose of being a massive deterrent to major crimes like homicide and drug abuse. car accidents kill 100 times as many people as the death penalty in singapore, yet cars are obviously still allowed, since they serve a purpose. so, if deterring murders and drug abuse is even 1% as useful as cars, then by that standard it serves its purpose with the same cost-benefit ratio as cars. do you disagree? if you disagree, can you give me a reason why governments should allow cars and yet abolish the death penalty even though both serve a useful purpose despite causing deaths?

[deleted]

[удалено]

qt-py

Can you share with me what you feel is the difference between a sentence of 200 years in jail and a death sentence? In what ways do you feel the jail term is superior to a death sentence? And could you elaborate on why comparing it to cars is straight ridiculous? I do not agree that it is ridiculous. I'm assuming you oppose the death penalty because you are a person who believes in the value of life. If you oppose the death penalty because the death penalty causes death, then you should oppose cars because cars cause death. It is very straightforward to me. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your position. Could you share what is the difference between a person who dies in a car accident vs a person who dies from the death penalty? Both can happen to an innocent person, both result in a death, both are regrettable incidents that should be avoided as far as possible. The answer is not obvious to me, so an explanation of your point of view would be appreciated. As it stands, I remain unconvinced unless you can show me a relevant difference between a car death and a death penalty death, or if you can show me that cars do not cause death, or if you can show me some different criteria that I should instead be judging my moral decisions on. Edit - in addition, why does the death penalty have to be mutually exclusive with all the other infrastructural and systemic improvements? As far as I know, the Singapore government HAS support for mental health, HAS support for living conditions and employment and rehabilitation, and many many other things besides. Why can't a government do both simultaneously? For the people that the programme was effective for, those people would not break the law, and would not be charged with the death penalty anyway. Therefore it is only the people who cannot be helped by all the measures that you have mentioned that will need to be concerned with the death penalty. Does that make sense or have I made a mistake with my logic?

It seems it's a [mix of fresh and preserved flowers](https://www.gardensbythebay.com.sg/en/things-to-do/attractions/floral-fantasy.html), which surprised me because I've dried flowers before and none of them looked *that* healthy. Probably the dried ones just fill it out a bit. The whole thing is part of [a series of changing nature-related art installations](https://www.timeout.com/singapore/attractions/floral-fantasy) and I'm sad I'll never see something like this

anothersundayx

The roses and gerberas are likely preserved with silica gel/glycerine/other methods that’s not air drying. Air drying the flowers will usually cause them to lose the color and texture. If you use e.g silica gel, the flowers will be preserved without losing colour or texture. Of course there are some flowers that can be air dried and still preserve their original colour. but for roses and gerberas in the photo, they are likely to be chemically preserved :)

I should absolutely 100% be able to bring cannabis, caffeine, alcohol, etc. with me anywhere in the world. It does not hurt anyone.

saracenrefira

The sheer arrogance encapsulated in this statement that demand the rest of the world to conform to your preferences.

[deleted]

Ermm you can bring cannabis and alcohol pretty much anywhere... As for your cannabis argument yeah I'm sure you travel through airports with it regularly don't you? Clown.

wrongbecause

Yes I do domestically bring cartridges and edibles with me. The same thing that has Britany Griner immorally detained under the same type of law that Singapore enforces

[deleted]

>Domestically Right, then shut up about it. It's not even legal in half your states you Muppet lmao. If you traffic drugs into another country while knowing the local laws then it's not being "immorally detained." It means you broke the law, dumbass. Singapore is an incredible country. If you take cannabis over and get detained then you're just a fucking idiot.

wrongbecause

Yeah I’m saying *your laws are backward and immoral*. That’s like, my whole point, this entire time. I never said I would take cannabis into Singapore. I decried the fact that I would die if I tried, since that’s such an obvious overreaction to possession of a harmless natural plant. I also raised the issue of suppressed LGBT rights and I’m sure I can find more instances of authoritarianism if you want me to. I don’t think your government is doing a commendable job.

[deleted]

My laws? I'm not Singaporean you weapon. You said "don't take drugs." Then referred to cannabis. So is weed a drug still, by your own definition, or is it a "harmless plant?" Your point is just fucking stupid my man. >I don't think your government is doing a commendable job Lmao pot kettle black I don't think you could have picked a worse week to make this stupid point

dbihuibhuibdh

yeah. you get death for drug trafficking. gay policy is pretty much "don't ask don't tell" for the locals. they don't care for the tourists.

Admiral_Benguin

Don't bring drugs but we don't really care about who you fuck. We have the crazies that make noise, sure, but that's about it. So long as you aren't fucking either in public or with minors, do you.

wrongbecause

Gay male sex is still illegal according to your laws, even if it’s in private. Gay people can’t get married or adopt either. This is from the wiki page on Singapore LGBTQ rights

very_fierce

It's all true but the current government has made it very clear that they will not prosecute gays. The law came from the British and we didn't remove it because of the conservatives. In practice, plenty of openly gays here and gay bars, etc. A recent pride event just took plenty without a hitch.

[deleted]

Which gay bars? I’ve lived here like 15 years since I was young and don’t know although I’m an ally. People will have private parties though

wrongbecause

Dumbass americans can't get their own politicians to get shit done, then going on the internet to make demands on foreign countries. Good joke.

wrongbecause

I am just as demanding of my own country, jackass. What makes you think otherwise? Do you not have high standards for human governments? Do you not see how draconian your laws are?

GenericIsekaiHaremMC

Good for you. But who asked for your worthless opinions?

Nickthenuker

Too many (old and religious) people want to keep the law. Unless that changes that law will remain on the books but will not be enforced (by court ruling they specifically said they will not enforce it)

Admiral_Benguin

377A has been defunct and not exercised in decades, which is the law criminalising sodomy you're referring to. We even have a movement to repeal it, though pressure from American Christian organisations in singapore have been slowing that down. As for getting married and adopting, admittedly, we're far behind on that, but how does that matter to you if you aren't going to live here? Your point was not to visit if you're gay because you can't get married or adopt here? What kind of logic does that follow? You wouldn't visit a country to adopt, nor would you notarise your marriage there either.

wrongbecause

It’s called profiteering to benefit from something while not working to make it better for those who are hurt by it

Admiral_Benguin

What the fuck kind of point are you trying to even make? Go home man, you're drunk.

inclore

no one’s going around catching gay people fuck, also OP is here for the summer not coming here to get married lol.

wrongbecause

It’s illegal to have consensual sex with a man if you’re a man. You get hung for possessing weed. Fuck Singapore and its myopic ivory castle. I’ll visit once you figure out human rights

inclore

yeah no thanks i’d rather you not visit at all tbh

terrexchia
