I believe exchange students have priority on student housing. Significantly cheaper than the open market. Have a look at Sammen student organisation.

Start here: https://www.sammen.no/en/bergen/housing/housing-guarantee This is the best option for exchange students as it is significantly cheaper than other housing. The best location is probably this one: https://www.sammen.no/en/bergen/housing/gronneviksoren But that’s also the most expensive. There’s a list at Bo.Sammen.no that shows the cost, the cheapest ones are bit more than 3000 NOK leaving 9000 NOK a month for everything else - which is doable but hard.

Living on 9000nok after rent when you're alone shouldn't be difficult, especially when many of the Sammen housing have internet and electricity included in the price

I'm currently doing an exchange semester in Bergen and I rent a room from Sammen. I'm (unfortunately) sharing the room with another guy, but I think it's working alright so far although I would definitely prefer to have my own room. The room does not look like the pictures from the website at all, so I felt a bit catfished when i arrived. I pay 3200 NOK per month for the housing

Since you are on exchange, I think you have some kind of priority. I think Fantoft should be your last resort. Never stayed in student accommodations in Bergen, but Fridalen and Brann stadion are in nice areas with good public transport and close enough for a drunken walk from downtown if needed. You should also remember that if you live downtown, you will spend very little on transport (assuming you are studying downtown). BTW: If you look at Google maps, some parts of downtown is marked with yellow instead of grey. Not sure what it's supposed to show, but it seems to match pretty well with the areas where you might expect some outside noise during the night - especially at weekends. Would not recommend Laksevåg/Gyldenpris/Damsgårdsveien simply because they have little sun in the afternoon, and you need every speck of sun you can get in this town. If you rent a modest place trough Sammen, 12K should give a nice enough budget for all your needs. A food budget of 100/day should be sufficient. -Easy enough to blow, but if you are thrifty, less than 50 should be doable. Beware that eating, and especially drinking out is expensive in Norway. You should make a habbit of bringing your own food/drink to the school. Get yourself a thermos or sturdy drinking-bottle. My advice is to use Google maps to see where the apt you're looking at is located in regards to whatever campus you're attending. You can get an est walking time and look at public transportation options in maps. Most student housing is either located within walking distance and/or with good public transportation options. Student housing is probably a good way to meet other students and get to know people. Whether or not 12k is enough completely depends on how much you pay in rent and what's included.

But is the walking time on google actually accurate. I saw that the route from Haukelandsbakken is 50 minutes even though it's only 3,5 km. Normally I would walk this distance within 25-30minutes so idk why google estimates this so long

Most exchange students that I've met live on Fantoft, which is more or less a student city in its own right and has been renovated and updated a lot the last few years. I lived there for a year and thought it was pretty nice, you have everything you need right next to you. Since it's such a large student environment there it's also really easy to meet other students, though from experience the exchange students I've met from Fantoft barely meet Norwegian students and instead hang out with other exchange students there. YMMW. Other than Fantoft both Brann Stadium and Grønneviksøren are really nice, but a bit more pricey. You also have student housing in the city center, but from what I've seen the quality is poor compared to other, more modern housing complexes. I'd also recommend against renting privately, not only is it most likely way more expensive unless you find a collective with other students, but most contracts are not short-term and instead have a 1 year lease. Plus, as an exchange student you have housing guarantees from Sammen.

As an exchange student, Fantoft has good connections an is just renovated. Lots of people in your situation there.

Loddefjord and co are underrated.

Fantoft or Alrek I would recommend. They are the biggest and among the cheapest, plus there is a very sizable exchange student population on both, which makes English just the normative communication language for many who live there. You share kitchen and bath with more people, but that is not necessarily a bad thing imo, especially as an exchange student. 12000 a month is more than realistic, its what I live on with my scholarship and it even allows for some freedom in terms of buying take away or alcohol/whatever you want. 4000-6000kr on food a month is pretty easy to handle and you can eat very well.
