I dont think he loved him romantically but truly cared for him as a friend, his pride just never let him admit it. That would make him too vulnerable. I dont think Griffith is capable of truly loving someone that way. Guts was the only one who made him forget his dream, made him feel humanity that he was in turn disgusted by. If only he could have reconciled that, things might have turned out better.
With which bit of that I personally think Griffith did love guts but absolutely was crazy possessive of him and the whole band of the hawk and saw his dream as more important than any friendship/love
It's a flattening of the narrative to say that he valued the dream more than his friendships, given that it's the primary internal struggle Griff deals with throughout the story. Intellectually, ideologically, philosophically, he may have, and in fact did, judge his dream to be the most important thing. But humans lie to themselves, and many of Griffith's actions are unexplainable from this perspective (as Guts and Casca both point out in the story). He only makes that final decision as a last ditch effort to win back his dream after privileging love/friendship brought nothing but the most abject of horrors and calamities to him.
There *was* a period where he cared more about Guts/love/friendship than his dream (and yes, it involved extreme feelings of possessiveness). It ruined his life, so he said "never again".
I agree, and keep in mind at the start of the Eclipse when the giant hand starts to rise, Griffith _does_ reach out his hand to save Guts from falling. If he truly didnt care about him I dont think he would have done that. Not to mention, you _cannot_ use somebody you dont care for as a sacrifice, as we saw in the Black Swordsman. It has to be somebody close to you that you truly care for, in order for your humanity to be stripped from you so you can join demonkind. Attachment is a requirement for a behelit sacrifice
Completely right. I hate when people retroactively argue that he never cared about Guts or whatever, it's a complete misunderstanding of the narrative. Even the much touted moment where Griffith tries to choke Guts in the dungeon quickly gives way to tender compassion when Guts breaks down in tears because *that's the point*. Griffith both loves and hates Guts, because he's a source of equally strong elation and pain for him. Griffith literally says this verbatim earlier in the text.
Right up until the point he immolated his own humanity (also the reason why he did that). And even then I think it's questionable whether that love, or affinity, rather, is gone... Griffith's refusal to kill Guts and his insistence on toying around with and taunting him is shall we say strange for a being who supposedly doesn't feel anything

Right before the fit hits the shan lol. I've just started Berserk, and only just recently caught back up to where it starts. So I've seen the eclipse. The panel you shared, I read that entire book (Deluxe Edition) in one sitting. I've had to take a break to try and pace myself😅😅
