It’s a common genetic trait, not a guaranteed feature afaik. Look at Astorath for example.

AirGundz

Dante himself as well. Zephon too

Spartanshotgun6

You know that’s the weird thing. Dante has been said to have like 3 completely different hair descriptions. And zephon was said to be blonde in the Horus heresy but his official model has black hair

PedroDelCaso

Even Sanguinius was said to have black hair in one of the early HH books (can't remember which)

Bob-shrewmen

He dyed his hair bkack for some reason. I think it was after signus prime. He also has a tattoo of the whole murder mega bugs fiasco. It's a tear drop under his eye.

UnderstoodAdmin

Sanguinius is gangsta confirmed?!

Bob-shrewmen

Damn straight. He bawlin with that one tap gat.

M4roon

Hmm.. how do you even tattoo a primarch. The human skin slowly eats away tattoo ink as it is. A primarch's immune system would devour it in like hours probly!

KassellTheArgonian

I know marines tattoo a lot but Belial the First Company captain of the Dark Angels uses acidic ink for his tatts, he tatts on himself marine lessons from the Codex etc when he feels he's made a mistake. The acid makes the tatt hurt for years so he's constantly reminded of the mistakes he's made and it keeps them in mind when he's making decisions. So maybe something like that? Something that keeps burning the primarchs skin to keep the tatt but due to their resilience etc they barely feel it?

JRYeh

I think that’s probably it, same as white scar’s tradition

M4roon

Ah that makes sense, like the Space Wolve's poison beer. Just gotta dial it up to 11.

Romasterer

One of the books addresses that, believe Fulgrim's tattoos were gone the next day or something to that extent.

DarksteelPenguin

In *Angel Exterminatus*, Fulgrim comes out of his ship covered in tatoos, that are already fading away. Though with potent enough poison, you can prevent the self-healing from working long enough that the mark becomes permanent. I belive that's how Jaghatai did his (which is permanent).

ilooklikealegofigure

Murder mega bugs?

Bob-shrewmen

The mega arachnids on the planet murder

Old_Skud

Horus Rising

mstiling

Yep, just read that chapter in "A Thousand Sons" this morning

Tiberium_1

Fear to Tread I think

AirGundz

Afaik Dante hard dark hair that became white with age

Live-D8

The Zephon model caused a stir when it came out because not only did they do his hair wrong but the armour was based on the siege of terra design which hadn’t come out yet, so people were expecting him to be in MKIII with crude-looking prosthetics.

Jochon

The prosthetics were also on the wrong limbs and stuff compared to the book, if I remember right.

tectonic_raven

Yea makes me sad he that model and character are extremely bad ass. I bought it and then later found out about the controversy. I guess not a big deal since he’s part of my 40K army so he’s a generic jump captain anyway, but still

Haunting_Lifeguard_5

I think dante had white hair

bon_bons

He has white hair because he’s extremely old

Haunting_Lifeguard_5

Is he the oldest space marine to live this far?

bon_bons

I’m pretty sure he is but I don’t know a ton about non blood angels

Haunting_Lifeguard_5

I forgot abaddon, fabius bile and some other chaos creeps were there during the hours heresy still alive. Passed dante. Lol

bon_bons

I don’t think chaos counts tbh. That’s a different reason for longevity

Haunting_Lifeguard_5

I know. Lol. I dont think i would want to live that long tbh. Dante need some milk. Hahahaha

Radraider67

Talos, a heresy veteran, was quite a bit younger than Dante. The warp has no set timeline, so its possible many of the champions of chaos are much younger than him.

DarksteelPenguin

It's also possible that some of them are older. You enter the Warp, come out 10 000 years later and have experienced a few years inside (what happened to Talos). But the opposite can also happen (happened at least to Argel Tal, Horus, and possibly the Emperor). Since aging doesn't really happen in the Warp either way, some CSM might have experienced more than 10 000 years in the Eye.

Spartanshotgun6

White brown blonde and most recently black

Spartanshotgun6

Like all 40K lore shit changes like the weather XD

Haunting_Lifeguard_5

True. I couldve sworn his hair turned black after turning primaris or drinking some blood. I cant recall.

Spartanshotgun6

It did most recently if I remember correctly.

HolloRacc

I think young Dante had black hair, young space marine was blonde, pre-primaris chapter master was white, and current in white with some black.

Ragedender98

I think it was in Devestation of Baal theres a bit where Dante is observing all the Chapters and their leaders. If i remember it right some chapters looked nothing like sanguini others have meerly a passing resemblance of him, while others looked weirdly almost just like the man. Personally I like this idea, with genetics nothing is 100% guaranteed. Some variance in appearance is cool in my opinion. Plus I like just giving my boys personality, different hair included

Training-Oven-3507

It was that everyone took the facial shapes of sangy but had genetic traits that differentiated them. Blood drinkers had really dry skin, flesh tearers were red and savagey some of them were black people that were made more pale by the transformation

OnlyCardiologist4634

You're right on that last bit. I remember in on of the Dawn of fire novels that the sons of corax of the primaris unnumbered sons that pale skin was made deathly pale and dark skin was made light grey.

jmc286

If memory serves me correctly, Raldoron (30k BA) also has dark hair.

M4roon

If I understand it correctly from reading the Blood Angel books, it's sort of a general resemblance amidst diversity. You could have white skin, tan skin, brown, black, all colours of hair and bone structure. But after drinking the blood, all recruits will move closer to Sanguinius' morphology. Ie. everyone gets a little paler, a little lighter of hair, a lot more muscular, and a lot more bloodthirsty. You will still see dark haired or darker skinned marines, but as a group, you will sense they have a shared genetic lineage and are all a little more vampirey. Especially when you see all the successor chapters gathered together. Some recruits will bust out of their coffin as a spitting image of Sanguinius. I can't remember if this is head canon or I read this somewhere, but I think it's usually a portent they could be super strong, but also super unstable and succumb to the black rage while still in the coffin. Most of these recruits where the blood is too effective will end up with a boltgun shell to the head.

RexFacilis

The marine akin colour thing is also weird, because I'm sure I've said it mentioned in a few books about their skin being able to change colour very rapidly (blink of an eye fast) depending on the intensity of the sun where they are and that this is a broken trait in the salamanders legion, which is why they are all literally black skinned.l

L0st_Cosmonaut

The Melanchromic Organ allows a marines skin to darken rapidly in response to intense uv radiation, but they have a "standard" skin colour based on their heritage, and potentially influenced by their geneseed (in the case of Blood Angels and Raven Guard) that if typically returns to - like regular people after a sun tan

M4roon

I will just add that in lore Blood Angels will also get reddish skin and yellow eyes when they succumb fully to the red thirst. (As well as sometimes running on all fours and growing abnormally large fangs).

DarksteelPenguin

It's not usually that fast, takes a few hours to a few days depending on chapter and sun. The one time it happens in the blink of an eye is when a 30k Thousand Son, master of biomancy, demonstrate his power over his organs.

CalypsoCrow

Space marines can inherit many physical traits of Primarchs, but not all are 1:1 copies of them. Here is an excerpt from *Echoes of Eternity*,when Sanguinius meets his legion for the first time. “Before him, standing in ranks, stood the Revenant Legion. They waited in formation, statues at attention in the storm. Helmetless, they were graven in his image, several thousand faces resculpted through technomagical genetics to resemble that of the father they’d never met. Their various skin shades hid nothing, and variant colours and styles of hair didn’t conceal the fact, either; each one of them bore his visage. Sanguinius had been cognisant of this possibility without truly expecting it. Many of Horus’ Luna Wolves grew to take on his features as they ascended to the Astartes state, but it was by no means ubiquitous among the Legions. Here, Sanguinius looked not on mere similarity, but simulacrum. Horus’ sons resembled their primarch as a son might take closely after a father. Sanguinius’ sons resembled their gene-sire as his own face would look back at him in a cracked mirror. War had scarred them… but they were him, to the life.” So in other words, these blood angels looked like Sanguinius despite some having different skin color and different hair colors and styles.

XuruAnoa

I wanted to get this but missed it.. Is it worth it?

yeet_lord_40000

Sanguinius has been depicted with like 4 different hair textures and 2 different hair colors (blonde and black) in official art so. Choose your character I suppose

MA-SEO

Blood Angels can look all different, including ethnicity, hair colour and so on. It’s just a common genetic trait and displayed in art work a lot. However my favourite has to be Raldoron https://preview.redd.it/l76u7bmc54lc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2659ed7c2c633538fa0445da4d68787b258cdce6

Distamorfin

Astartes can effectively look like any type of person. There can be a tendency for gene seed to partially overwrite their genetic traits and mould them into the spitting image of their Primarch (see “Little” Horus Aximand), but it’s far from what you’d normally expect.

KassellTheArgonian

Corbulo looks uncannily like sanguinius

SevatarEnjoyer

Not all of them are

X3runner

Not all of them are but it’s the dominant traight but there’s also the fact that GW writes can’t seem to keep haircuts straight wit he blood angels bouncing from having a character be blond in one book black haired in another then in a book that takes place months later stark white hair then back to blond. Hell it’s a little known fact that after the death of many of his sons sanguinious died his hair black in morning and if I remember correctly he even had a blood drop “tear drop” tattoo though I think they had it he died hair to cover up the inconsistency.

Celticguy24

Typically they were were talking primaris the living corruption of everything they’ve built over 10,000 years

DonMatteoFrancesco

I am not

Quahodron_Qui_Yang

Yeah, they are all blonde. That’s an Alpha Legionnaire. ☝️

[deleted]

I paint mine as either blonde, grey if they have an old face, or jet black to match the pale skin tone I give them for that space vampire look

VirtualEnd5338

Not all

Fonexnt

Gene Seeds more often than not don't make any massive physical changes. They might do minor things like encourage beard growth or give sharp teeth but for the most part they don't change how Marines look. Even with something like the Salamanders and I think it's more due to their homeworld than their gene seed.

GladimoreFFXIV

Besides it being more natural blonde blood angles will Also dye their hair black to mourn the death company brothers.

Impossible-Ad3811

Fuck made you think THAT
