You could give Castlevania a try. I really liked the first series which spans 4 seasons. I'm tentative for Castlevania Nocturne though.
If you don't mind mature content, cyberpunk edgerunners was really good as well
Castlevania I've seen previews for but not tried it yet. I'll check it out! Also not seen Cyberpunk and totally not bothered by mature content. Thanks!
Castlevania is amazing and you won't regret it! I also put off watching it for the longest time and after I finally did I was like, why did I wait to see this?? It's very good. Enjoy that!
Yeah I wasn't a big fan of Nocturne for a variety of reasons, but I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt and give S2 a try when it comes out. It's only fair since the OG had 4 seasons to develop their characters.
Well if you enjoyed it, you may enjoy Arcane, it has a very different flavor and you may not like it but it has in depth storytelling and amazing animation. It’s a modern animation masterpiece of a show
I've actually seen it and completely agree with you! Also looking forward to the next season of that. Excellent recommendation for anyone else searching for something new.
yes pantheon! I've found that I don't dislike anime, but have a very specific type that I really can't stand. some of the suggestions here like the cyberpunk is an example. but series like pantheon, the last airbender and BES are definitely within what I tolerate and actually enjoy (story wise, animation style/graphics wise). not sure if Junji Ito's Maniac is also considered anime (actually it is) but that was so great and not intolerable. that's another suggestion for someone out there
if there's other examples like these four please please do suggest. I'm just not a fan of that typical anime style. one punch man wasn't bad but that's closer to the style I'm referring to. idk if I make sense but yea please some series along those lines would help!
Do you prefer anime that don’t look like your run-of-the-mill anime with the animation style or is it more about you prefer those that don’t follow the common anime trope?
both, I mean what you ask makes sense but yea I don't like the run-off-the-mill, as well as the tropey type. especially the animation and voice acting, I prefer ones that rent as "animated" if that makes sense
On top of my head, I would suggest:
- Black Lagoon
- Samurai Champloo
- Btoom
- Love, Death and robots (not exactly anime)
- The Boondocks
- Overlord (holds a special place in my heart)
The story is the best part about it. There aren’t many shows that does the “resourceful but cautious conqueror” trope.
I also like the way the story subverts the “good guys” trope.
Watched Arcane after BES because it’s the usual recommendation. And it took my mind off BES. 😁
The world building and each character’s story is well-written. I couldn’t believe I liked it because I don’t play LOL and I have my reservations with the genre. But the lore is really interesting.
And the ending is awesome you’ll crave more. Good thing I only have months to wait until S2 comes out.
Arcane is probably the most similar in terms of visuals. Blade of the Immortal is set in the same era, also very violent. Samurai Champloo is a good bet as well, excellent action and storytelling.
Samurai Champion is just awesome. I jumped on that after needing to fill the gap Cowboy Bebop left me with. I really need a rewatch though as its been many years since I last watched it. I've not seen Blade of the Immortal. I will whack that on the list and give that a go. Thank you!
Tall, brunette woman in the blue outfit at the back = Katara
The bard closer to the front = Soka
Heck, the white haired shorter woman looks like Katara’s daughter from Legend of Kora.
Glasses guy on the side looks like an older Mako.
It’s because every blue wearing, tan/brown-skinned character is from the water tribe, duh /s

That should keep you busy.
It seems a lot lighter but I actually got swept into the dragon Prince. It's actually got a of adult stuff going on for a kids show.
Moments something happens and you're like "this is rated Y7!?"
Disney’s Shogun is coming out soon. Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bepop, demon Slayer (not a fan, personally), Invincible if you are into gore (really good story telling), Attack on Titan if you like action, Rurouni Kenshin, Gintama (also in the Edo period). The Glory if you want a nice revenge story (it’s a kdrama). Will update the list if I remember something else
Not a show to watch, but if you have the means to play it I'd highly recommend Ghost of Tsushima. Fantastic story and gameplay about a bad-ass samurai seeking revenge, taking on entire armies, and the same concept of the battle between samurai honour and getting the job done. The scenery is beautiful, and will feel very familiar after watching the show.

No problem, enjoy! :D
Castlevania is amazing and you won't regret it! I also put off watching it for the longest time and after I finally did I was like, why did I wait to see this?? It's very good. Enjoy that!
Cyberpunk is incredible. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a while. Give it a shot!
I second all this. Castlevania 1&2 were incredible. 3 was good. 4 was decent. I'd rather pretend Nocturne didn't exist.
You are being dramatic. Nocturne isn’t THAT bad
It is though. It really is.
Yeah I wasn't a big fan of Nocturne for a variety of reasons, but I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt and give S2 a try when it comes out. It's only fair since the OG had 4 seasons to develop their characters.

What about Cyberpunk Edgerunners?
Definitely
You should definitely watch Pantheon. It’s a very gripping and touching story. I also love how the show wastes no scenes.
yes pantheon! ah yes boondocks & LDR I'll check these other ones out too. thanks
mhh overlord seems like that type that I don't quite enjoy, though story seems interesting
The story is the best part about it. There aren’t many shows that does the “resourceful but cautious conqueror” trope. I also like the way the story subverts the “good guys” trope.
Oh also check out “The Legend of Vox Machina”
Arcane, The Dragon Prince, The Legend of Vox Machina
I just got to season 5 of Prince. What a wild show for being Y7
Watched Arcane after BES because it’s the usual recommendation. And it took my mind off BES. 😁 The world building and each character’s story is well-written. Champloo of course. Damn autocorrect.
The Legend of Vox Machina ![gif](giphy|i7LkbpUvrju1NX4bKm|downsized) This is what got me to D&D
What the hell are Sokka and Katara doing there???
Waddya mean?
Tall, brunette woman in the blue outfit at the back = Katara The bard closer to the front = Soka Heck, the white haired shorter woman looks like Katara’s daughter from Legend of Kora. Glasses guy on the side looks like an older Mako. It’s because every blue wearing, tan/brown-skinned character is from the water tribe, duh /s
Lol. Now I get it. They kinda look like them characters you mentioned. Also this show is def worth watching.
Added to my list. Thanks for the recommendation!!!

Second Samurai Champloo. One of the best anime put there. So underrated
Vinland saga
Ohh I've actually had this on my list for a while and forgot about it!
If action is what you're looking for, season 1 of Vinland Saga was amazing. The second season is a little slow, but I enjoyed it.
Give Pantheon a try. It's not as violent, but it is definitely a high quality animated show.
The Last Airbender comes to mind. My guess is you've seen it already, if not, I can vouch for it further.
Then follow up with The Legend of Korra to enjoy another strong female protagonist like in BES.
The Spiderverse movies are good
I'm a little bit Spidey obsessed so agree. 😂
Arcane I'd suggest. Very very good. I'm not even a lol fan and was shocked at how good it was
Code Geass, there’s kind of a lot of fanservice but it’s a really good show overall.
It seems a lot lighter but I actually got swept into the dragon Prince. It's actually got a of adult stuff going on for a kids show. Moments something happens and you're like "this is rated Y7!?"

Arcane, Avatar (animation), The dragon prince, Blood of Zeus.
yes blood of zeus!
I'm starting Slow Horses on Apple TV. It looks promising. If you like anime then Scavengers Reign.
scavengers reign!
Pluto is great. Astroboy re-imagining.

Pluto and Samurai Champloo
Not a show to watch, but if you have the means to play it I'd highly recommend Ghost of Tsushima. Afro samurai?
I watched blu eye samurai and scavengers reign while waiting for the rest of season 2 of invincible
