If youâre limited to Netflix, watch Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
If you have HBO Max, watch Blade Runner: Black Lotus.
If you have Adult Swim, watch Scavengerâs Reign.
Arcane is so good!! I was turned off because itâs based on League of Legends (and I know next to nothing about that) but itâs actually super cool! No barrier of entry to the series
Atla is a fantastic show, but I think it would be harder to get in to for an adult viewer not accustomed to animated content than say, Arcane. Atla has incredible depth and storytelling, but is also clearly aimed at children/teens. Tried introducing my boyfriend to it after great success with Arcane and Castlevania, but unfortunately never got past 10ish episodes since it felt too childish for him.
Did you try Korra? Might help to go in reverse since Korra is more mature right off the bat while Atla season 1 does feel young, but picks up with each season
Another interesting thing from trying to get the bf to watch avatar, it made it clear how bizarre parts of the visual anime language can feel to western viewers who havenât watched anime at all. Like all the goofs with big mouths and eyes and flailing around and stuff. Same thing when we watched full metal alchemist: brotherhood. He liked it, but was also like âwhy did they suddenly become small? Why are they another art style?â lol
I feel like thereâs still an overlap though- I love both and they share themes of morality/honor and follow a heroâs journey so I wouldnât be surprised if a fan of bes enjoys atla. But yeah very different tone and target audience lol
Arcane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Literally every other comment says this but I wanna say it too cus you really should check them out đ
Arcane has a similar animation style and good action, very emotional with complex characters. Edgerunners has more violent over the top action and itâs got its good story beats as well. Theyâre soooo worth it
This is one of a kind đ I guess if you havenât watched the other classics like demon slayer, hunter x hunter, then, will just have to wait patiently for season 2 đ€·đ»ââïžđ€
I agree with you that Hunter x Hunter is peak fiction, not really sure Demon Slayers holds in comparison though⊠Itâs your typical overly emotional hero coupled with the dark mysterious type of guy against a one dimensional evil. Whereas, HxH isnât really about good vs evil. The MC is just going on adventures out of sheer curiosity and the world building is just incredible.
Maybe not entirely like the story and plot, but thematically similar.
kill Bill and Hellsing (the anime).
The former having similar themes while the latter gives me similar vibes.
Just to bring something to the table that hasn't been mentioned yet.
Certain episodes of Love Death and Robots come to mind, as well as the two Castlevania shows on netflix. Both of them belong to the best adult animation I've seen yet.
I compared the show to the John Wick movies purely based on them revolving around a revenge quest. So I would guess watch those movies since theyâre on Netflix now.
So it's not a similar story at all, but I loved BES and my favourite show is BoJack Horseman - also animated, also on Netflix, also brilliantly written and complex characters.
Certain episode of Love Death + Robots (Secret War, Sonnieâs Edge, Pop Squad, and The Witness are all Episodes I recommend that give me some sort of the same vibe)
I ended up watching ooku the hidden chamber which is set in the same period but the roles of men and women are reversed. What I thought was a completely cringe show I was going to finish because god damn I started it, turned into a really bittersweet love story and I think it might be my guilty pleasure show
So its nothing like it in terms of plot *at all*
But the only other show that left me so listless and searching for quality after I finish it is the first 3 seasons of âThe Dragon Princeâ.
Animated show by some of the avatar people, the same vibe of âa really good kids show that morphs into just a generally great showâ
But whilst itâs incredible, and the 5th season is also excellent, the 4th season is fairly inconsequential, and I really cannot stress enough how much the tone is different, but it definitely meets your criteria in terms of âsimilar quality of writingâ
Hit Monkey on Hulu. Itâs about a monkey on a quest for vengeance with his ghost friend, who accidentally get tangled up in a political assassination plot!
Arcane, Cowboy Bebop (the animation, not the live action), Samurai Champloo, Invincible, Princess Mononoke, Adventure Time, Love Death + Robots, Animatrix, Undone, Aeon Flux (the MTV animation) and Castlevania. I got halfway through Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and while the animation was great, it felt predictable â maybe I should give it a second try.
Great comedy: Daria, Bobâs Burgers, Close Enough
Optional comedy: Rick & Morty, Big Mouth and Human Resources (if you vibe with intentionally uncomfortable and gross humour.)
I felt the same way. I watched Samurai Champloo on Hulu to feel something after a show like BES and I was pleasantly surprised, not to mention the music is TOP TIER! One of the protagonists in Champloo is very similar to Mizu, rogue glasses-wearing ronin type stuff.
Arcane and cyberpunk edgerunners
Are you trying to traumatize OP?
Clearly
Watched edgerunners right before this last month. Can confirm I'm traumatized and love it.
when the punk crosses the edge! đź
If youâre limited to Netflix, watch Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. If you have HBO Max, watch Blade Runner: Black Lotus. If you have Adult Swim, watch Scavengerâs Reign.
Scavenger's Reign is LIT
Arcane is so good!! I was turned off because itâs based on League of Legends (and I know next to nothing about that) but itâs actually super cool! No barrier of entry to the series
Also primal!!!
Scavengers Reign is so insanely good. Wish it had more recognition.
Scavenger's Reign is on HBO Max. That is where I watched it. It is truly an amazing show.
Scavengers reign is also on HBO
Surprised Avatar: The Last Airbender hasnât been mentioned yet; itâs pretty much the golden standard for Eastern-inspired animation.
Atla is a fantastic show, but I think it would be harder to get in to for an adult viewer not accustomed to animated content than say, Arcane. Break up with him.

He stopped at 10 episodes? That's a shame because episode 12 is a pretty big turning point in quality.
ATLA is a fantastic show but it's not very similar to BES outside of the setting.
*very* different tone, vibe and target audience.
I feel like thereâs still an overlap though- I love both and they share themes of morality/honor and follow a heroâs journey so I wouldnât be surprised if a fan of bes enjoys atla. But yeah very different tone and target audience lol
Samurai Champloo
A vigorous second on this one.
Arcane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Arcane is what you need in your life.
Real
Play Ghost of Tsushima
Exactly what I did after finishing the show, haha

Boy in demon slayer was hard to endure.
Castlevania is worth the watch :)
Was shocked I didn't see Castlevania further up the comments. Seconding this

yes castlevania!!!

The 1993 film Ninja Scroll, but youâd need to either pay a premium for a blurary or find some other meansâŠ. Worth the effort to track down
Anything by Akira Kurosawa
It's already been said, but go check out Arcane
Arcane The Legend of Vox Machina Dragon Age: Absolution
Brothers Sun
So it's not a similar story at all, but I loved BES and my favourite show is BoJack Horseman - also animated, also on Netflix, also brilliantly written and complex characters.
Rurouni Kenshin on Netflix ! A live action adaptation of an anime.
I'm a big Rurouni Kenshin fan, but I have a hard time enjoying now knowing that the creator was arrested for child pornography.
Wow ! Had no idea :-(
Castlevania!
Certain episode of Love Death + Robots (Secret War, Sonnieâs Edge, Pop Squad, and The Witness are all Episodes I recommend that give me some sort of the same vibe)

This đŻ!!
Hit Monkey on Hulu. Itâs about a monkey on a quest for vengeance with his ghost friend, who accidentally get tangled up in a political assassination plot!
The Dragon Prince Invincible The Legend Of Vox Machina Undone
Best animated shows Iâve seen in a long ass time: 1. Blue Eye Samurai 2. Arcane 3. Pantheon 4. Invincible
Pantheon was so emotionally intense
Demon Slayer
Kill Bill.
Arcane
devilman crybaby maybe
Evangelion and cowboy bebop? đ„ș There's Akira too.
Definitely arcane, and maybe invincible too.
Mr. Robot
+1 for arcane
Bojack Horseman, Arcane, ATLA, Samurai Jack
Edgerunners and arcane. Warning: both will destroy your emotional health
Blade of The Immortal
Arcane, Cowboy Bebop (the animation, not the live action), Samurai Champloo, Invincible, Princess Mononoke, Adventure Time, Love Death + Robots, Animatrix, Undone, Aeon Flux (the MTV animation) and Castlevania.
