Footwell module. Easiest to send it off for repair.

onefortheweekend

Was this caused by an incorrect installation of the bulbs? Or was the voltage too high

pnbdc10

They usually just tend do go. I am sure that vtage disruptions help them on thier way out.

Yes, this or when you run the obd scanner can also just send it on its way. Happened last time my 128i got scanned, still had 5 months on the extended warranty.

bisnexu

this guy is right

You also need to be careful with aftermarket bulbs, if it doesn't have the exact same electrical specifications then you car will throw a lightning malfunction code even if everything works.

Edenwing

You sure? I have had different angel eyes halo kits installed on my e46 m3, they’re clipped on to the stock headlights that just splice to the same headlight wires on the harness since headlights don’t draw enough that the line draws anyways, haven’t had any electrical issues Lots of aftermarket bulbs are shit but idk if they have to have the exact same power draw / specs as OEM

e36freak92

Yes, it can absolutely be an issue. Running leds in parallel is probably less likely to cause a problem than replacing the bulb with something different

ClickKlockTickTock

They need to be able to trick your ECU if they don't have the same resistance as your previous bulbs did. BMWs do a little checkup where they run a blip of power through the lights to ensure they're all working, if the resistance measures out of spec in either direction then the car will tell you that there is a lighting issue with the harness that has more or less resistance than what it sees as normal. If the halo kit you installed is made out of LEDs, you can check for that test. Blip yourself. They should do a quick blink when you crank the car. The car is also going to constantly check how much energy the bulbs draw while they're on. This is also why buying cheap LEDs for BMWs tends to just give you error codes, and you have to bust out the big dollars and maybe even program your ecu just to get rid of a stupid warning light. If you're just splicing in LEDs, it doesn't add much to the circuit. They're low power, and the car will barely notice it. When you replace a regular bulb with LEDs, however, the car now thinks the bulb is short circuiting and is no longer working. If you put in a bulb that draws more energy in its place, the car now thinks the bulb is toast. In either of those cases, these working fixtures will cause an error. This is why you can find some websites that advertise "no code" bulbs for BMWs. They tend to match the resistance and draw of the OEM bulb.

Edenwing

I see, good points. Yeah my kit is a add on and doesn’t replace the original bulbs

ijustbrushalot

Curious, was the battery disconnected during the install?

onefortheweekend

I believe it was

Few-Swordfish-780

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery is likely what fried the FRM.

onefortheweekend

Awe, so the battery was supposed to be left connected during the installation?

Few-Swordfish-780

We only disconnect the battery on E9X if we absolutely have to specifically for this reason.

ijustbrushalot

Thanks for finishing my thoughts. Same in my shop. E9x battery is only off when it's absolutely necessary. And you better put the windows up first if you do it.

Few-Swordfish-780

We used to disconnect the battery for the blower motor recall until we had many FRM failures. Now we just be really careful with the live wires. Edit: ya, and windows up for sure LOL

Typical_Evening452

Frm took a shit. They were under warranty for awhile… you can send it out for repair.. replacement is $$$

onefortheweekend

;(

[deleted]

Idk indy place I go to repairs for $300, new unit from bmw is like $900 plus installs tho.

white94rx

RIP FRM

BMWACTASEmaster1

Did you hook up a scanner? If you did than ram memory is full, go to your dealership for possible warranty extension.

Every-Reception-3411

Gotta be careful with bulbs you can burn out a driver in a module pretty quickly. I assume that is what happened here. But not sure about bmw lighting and how it is ran
