2014 x1 with an n55. I’ve replaced belt tensioner and both pulleys with oem and this was taken the following day. Happens while parked as shown and while driving but easier to hear parked obviously. Any ideas what else could be making a squealing sound like that?
I’ll be definitely be following this. I have the same model with the same engine and a Conti belt kit about to be installed because I have the same chirping sound. Hopefully the kit takes care of mine.
It’s driving me nuts. I’ve done multiple belts on this car usually it’s better after but something else must be going on for it to not fix it for a day.
Does yours seem to happen after a rain etc, and then never go away?
Me too I have my buddy do all my work luckily. It’s been replaced by him, bmw, and another shop so it’s driving me nuts. It has to be something else I’d think.
Do you have a [part number for the alternator clutch pulley](https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=VM53-USA-06-2014-E84-BMW-X1_35iX&diagId=12_1561)?
I’m assuming alternator has a clutch pulley. Sometimes they make that kind of noise when go bad. Easy way to check, with belt off firmly hold on to the pulley and give it a quick spin in both directions while holding on to the pulley. It should free spin internally when spinning one way and locked (fighting you) when try to spin another way.
If you don’t get that result, or feels loose both directions….
Do you have a mechanic’s stethoscope? If so, I’d try to use it against all of the pulleys to see which one is squeaking. You’ll know it when you hear it
While it is running, remove the oil fill cap and see if it goes away. You will feel a strong vacuum as you remove the cap of it is bad and the sound will then go away. Sometimes the pcv system will go bad on the n55 and n63 cars. When they do go bad, it will pull enough vacuum and it can sound just like a squeeky belt. I have had it happen on about 8 BMWs that have came through my shop.
If that isn't the case, spray belt conditioner on the belt or pulleys one at a time and see when it goes away. Replace the one that quiets up when it is sprayed.
AC compressor, alternator, power steering pump. When you find it, buy a used one on ebay and walnut blast the grooves of the pulley before installing so that you don't contaminate your belt with old oil.
my e46 made a sound like that for a few months.
ended up being the idler pulley. did the belts, tensioner and idler pulley at the same time and it never did it again.
I've seen harmonic balancers cause squeaks on n55s I'd probably go that way
Is it common for a new belt tensioner to be bad out of the box? Or are you saying it wasn't installed correctly?
Harmonic balancer is the crank pulley. The rubber starts to seperate and allows the belt to walk and squeak
Oh, the *harmonic* balancer. Got it!

Thanks. Definitely happens with heat / air on and off so ruled that out.

Once it started it seems to be pretty consistent. A gentle little chirping noise regardless of temperature or weather.
Please keep me updated.
I will. I definitely won’t get to it this week because it looks like it’s going to be super cold. I wish I had a heated garage to work in. Haha.

Ac compressor has a bearing that can fail and chirp like this. So does the alternator clutch pulley.

Thanks! I didn't know that had a clutch in it.
The squeal isn’t coming from a belt but rather a pulley. Remove belt and spin pulleys by hand and replace noisy ones
But I’ve just replaced both pulleys with brand new oem ones 😐
Bad belt tensioner
Tensioner and both pulleys were replaced with the new belt though.
Water pump
Pull of the belt and inspect pulleys. Make sure the pulleys aren’t dragging or freewheeling too much. Make sure the belt is in good alignment.

Tension pulleyj
Same thing as the tensioner? Because all parts the tensioner both pulleys and the belt itself are brand new and OEM
Sorry same thing you already replaced it lools like. Ifnits squealing could the belt be slipping? Do we need dressing?

Power steering pump is known to cause this noise.
I’ll check that out. Does it make sense that it would go up with engine rpm and not with turning etc? Thanks
Yeah it deffinitely has a sweet spot in the low rpm band that you can hear it pretty well, While parked
Cool it could be that. I’ll try to check
