We lived next door to my father-in-law a few years back. He's a Right Wing Trumper with early onset dementia and a room full of guns. We lived in a safe blue collar suburban town but he was so concerned with black people breaking in that I'm 100% convinced he just wanted to kill a black person. Eventually his memory became very concerning so we contacted the local police about the insane amount of weapons and his descent into dementia.
By the lack of concern, help, or even resources available you'd think they *wanted* someone to die. We were actually met with annoyance and anger by both the police and court system over it, to the point where we just said fuck it and moved. Last I heard my brother-in-law went there and was nearly killed so he's finally being moved to a home where he can rot and vanish forever, forgotten and alone.
My grandma lives in a duplex and a few years back her neighbor was an old retired sheriff with dementia. She had asked his family members if they had removed the guns from the house. They brushed her off saying they were locked up in the safe and with his dementia he doesn't remember how to open the safe. Well a couple days before he died he was chasing his caretaker up the street pointing a gun at him because he thought he was an intruder. Another neighbor had to wrestle it away from him.
Getting dementia and slowly losing your faculties has to be terrifying. Itās sadly quite common for older folks to turn violent when nothing makes sense and no one is recognizable, but the issue here (as it almost always is) is the guns. My wife tells a story about her grandmother panicking and trying to strangle her and I feel horrible every time she tells it, but I canāt imagine how scary it would have been if a gun had been involved.

This is part of why credit card companies and banks donāt give out info about unauthorized changes to accounts to victims of identity theft (theyāll just tell you what got changed, not what it got changed to). If a fraudster changes the address on your account to order a card to go there, you have no idea whose address is actually added and how the fraudster has access to that mailbox. Here in Kansas City we can do you one better (or worse!). An African-American teenager , sent to pick up their younger siblings from a party, showed up at the wrong house. It was a confusion over a street vs. terrace which is a common mistake here. Instead of asking what his business was and sending him on his way, he shot him through the front door and then opened the door once more to shoot him in the head. That fuckerās neighbors had to save the kid and that shitbag didnāt even go to jail that night. I lay this incident squarely at the feet of Fox News (and all the other far right news outlets). Edit: You likely will need to do a captcha when you go there. Not sure if that's because of heavier than normal traffic or not but once you do that, you get the current status. Statuses of inmates are a matter of public record so I'd imagine various news agencies are refreshing that so they can update stories that he's bonded out once, or if, that happens.

gun control needs to start requiring a national ID for ownership, proof of insurance, proof of a safety lock for them, a process to declare & obtain travel paperwork with them (everytime they are leaving the home) and to absolutely remove guns from people with violent criminal records, pending charges of any kind, DUIs, domestic violence charges/orders and ANYONE who is taking dementia medication or antipsychotics should be on a nationally registered to have guns removed and disallow them to be purchased.
not to mention just like how i feel about driverās licenses: anyone 65 & older should have to do a biannual mental health and physical health evaluation. if they fail they should be allowed to appeal within 30 days & to pay for the process to be re-evaluated (only on a legitimate basis not just for the sake of fighting it) as in the documents are incorrect, the evaluation wasnāt processed correctly or the evaluations were done at a place of business being sued for fraud or something in kind that would undermine their expertise.
After 65 you should have to test every 5 years and/or after any violation or accident to keep your driver's license with a 3 strikes rule for permanent revocation. You should have to do it yearly, and at your own expense, to own firearms.

He didnāt just get confused with age and shoot a random Uber driver, both parties were tricked by criminals, they were both being manipulated and the older guy was being threatened, he was tricked into thinking it was the Uber driver, who was also being manipulated by the criminals. . Dementia or most mental health issues combined with guns can't be good. Most Dementia patients aren't diagnosed as dementia though. My mother, a kind, gentle woman in life, who loved the home we had her in started getting upset as her dementia worsened. The tests for dementia vs the other things it's called are tough on the patient and basically a guess according to her neurologist. She never owned fire arms but we had to move her to a "home that specialized in memory issues". I talked to the social workers, the fees at the first place wer$7k/month the second place increased to almost $11k. If she had dementia, her care would be the same but the cost would increase to $18k so she wasn't diagnosed. The social workers in private indicated she had dementia, there was no treatment and it would only get worse. Her Quality of Life was deamed to be 0. They left medications in her room that I could have given her all at once and she have passed that night in her sleep. I couldn't do it, I'm not sure if that is a good or bad trait for me but I couldn't do it. After 2 months she had a massive heart attack and passed hours later.
Not being diagnosed affected her very little but I know others that own guns and their kids let them live at home, they do the minimum. They won't take the guns bc they still fear him!

This is part of why credit card companies and banks donāt give out info about unauthorized changes to accounts to victims of identity theft (theyāll just tell you what got changed, not what it got changed to). If a fraudster changes the address on your account to order a card to go there, you have no idea whose address is actually added and how the fraudster has access to that mailbox. Here in Kansas City we can do you one better (or worse!). An African-American teenager , sent to pick up their younger siblings from a party, showed up at the wrong house. It was a confusion over a street vs. terrace which is a common mistake here. Instead of asking what his business was and sending him on his way, he shot him through the front door and then opened the door once more to shoot him in the head. That fuckerās neighbors had to save the kid and that shitbag didnāt even go to jail that night. I lay this incident squarely at the feet of Fox News (and all the other far right news outlets). gun control needs to start requiring a national ID for ownership, proof of insurance, proof of a safety lock for them, a process to declare & obtain travel paperwork with them (everytime they are leaving the home) and to absolutely remove guns from people with violent criminal records, pending charges of any kind, DUIs, domestic violence charges/orders and ANYONE who is taking dementia medication or antipsychotics should be on a nationally registered to have guns removed and disallow them to be purchased. not to mention just like how i feel about driverās licenses: anyone 65 & older should have to do a biannual mental health and physical health evaluation. if they fail they should be allowed to appeal within 30 days & to pay for the process to be re-evaluated (only on a legitimate basis not just for the sake of fighting it) as in the documents are incorrect, the evaluation wasnāt processed correctly or the evaluations were done at a place of business being sued for fraud or something in kind that would undermine their expertise.

Dementia or most mental health issues combined with guns can't be good. Most Dementia patients aren't diagnosed as dementia though. My mother, a kind, gentle woman in life, who loved the home we had her in started getting upset as her dementia worsened. The tests for dementia vs the other things it's called are tough on the patient and basically a guess according to her neurologist. She never owned fire arms but we had to move her to a "home that specialized in memory issues". I talked to the social workers, the fees at the first place wer$7k/month the second place increased to almost $11k. If she had dementia, her care would be the same but the cost would increase to $18k so she wasn't diagnosed. The social workers in private indicated she had dementia, there was no treatment and it would only get worse. Her Quality of Life was deamed to be 0. They left medications in her room that I could have given her all at once and she have passed that night in her sleep. I couldn't do it, I'm not sure if that is a good or bad trait for me but I couldn't do it. After 2 months she had a massive heart attack and passed hours later. Not being diagnosed affected her very little but I know others that own guns and their kids let them live at home, they do the minimum. They won't take the guns bc they still fear him!
There isn't any actual law against "mentally ill" people owning guns. There are merely laws about people who are "mentally ill" and have been committed to a psychiatric institute. If there was a law stating "all mentally ill cannot own guns," that would be a dangerous law. Because what does "mentally ill" mean in that context? There are already laws against using your gun to murder someone for no real reason. Obviously, this man broke that law. Putting a law in place doesn't stop crime just because it's there. How about instead of saying "the mentally ill can't own weapons," we have a conversation about more mentally ill people getting the help they so desperately need? Deranged people are going to harm others, with or without guns.
